5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great little book! 5 dinos. 6 sounds. Batteries replaceable. By Sir This is a great little book. It features five dinosaurs, each with a couple facts and a textured area that you press on to hear that dinosaur's roar. You have to press firmly in the middle of each area to trigger the sound, so if you have a little one like my 15 month who loves this book, it will take a little time to master. Probably the reason the book is recommended for ages 3 and up. I also love that you can replace the batteries (3 x 1.5V AG10) so the book isn't trash when they run out like some other books I have. The battery compartment is on the back of the book and can be opened with a small screwdriver. The holes that the speaker plays through are also on the back of the book, so the sound will be somewhat muffled if they are covered. Dinosaurs and textures are as follows:Tyrannosaurus Rex - metallic scales (can also be accessed through hole in front cover)Stegosaurus - corrugated cardboardPterodactyl - nappy feltDiplodocus - imitation leatherTriceratops - mirrored dotsAll dinosaurs together (a sounds play in sequence) - no texture, just a circle containing a musical noteI'll definitely be buying the other books in this serious based on this purchase.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. noisy dinosaurs By S. Winn My 6 month old grandson loves this book. It has good pictures and the sounds are fun (some reviews complain about the sounds not being correct, if you read the words that describe the sound they are right, just not what you expect them to be). My only complaint is the area to press is big compared to the precise noise button and my grandson has problems finding the button sometimes. He knows that area makes the sound, but can't always hit the spot. Some of them require a firmer pressure than his little finger can make so he will take my finger and try to press it.

But aside from Noisy Farm, the other books don't seem as loud.My son (who is one) can press most of the buttons just fine. A few are harder for him to push. Some of the areas are pretty big and you have to push right in the middle to make it work.I like the books though.

Willow's Walk, by Rusty Blackwood

Review Review Rating:5 stars! Reviewed By Maria Beltran for Readers' Favorite A contemporary romance novel, Willow's Walk is a story that is so familiar, making it easy to relate to. Rusty Blackwood's creative writing style is simple and smooth and this makes the book such an enjoyable read. Her characters are well rounded and believable, and she always finds a redeeming value in each of them, the villains included, and this makes all of them quite human. I highly recommend this book!Review Rating:5 stars! Reviewed By Gisela Dixon Willow's Walk by Rusty Blackwood is a contemporary novel with elements of romance, intrigue, love, adventure, family, and more. Willow has been presented as a human being that anyone can empathize with, with strengths, weaknesses, and flaws just like anyone else. The writing style is lyrical, and genuine and the story flows seamlessly. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the life story of a person presented in such a wonderful manner.

From the Author It is my pleasure to bring my latest romantic fiction drama, Willow's Walk to the reading public. As you walk with Willow, it is my hope that you will relate to the many obstacles facing her, the reasoning behind them, and the ways in which she chooses to deal with them. The novel carries a very important message, one that many, even in today's Internet world, are not immunized from. This is sad, and realized more than one might think. Please enjoy this walk, and should you like, send your feedback to rusty-blackwood.com, or e-mail me at writerrusty@hotmail.ca. Reviews are worth their weight in helping others choose a title, so feel free to express your thoughts on the book's page, and I thank you.

From the Inside Flap From 'Opening Thoughts' What drives a person's train of though, impelling them toward detrimental, often licentious acts that often bring nothing but heartache? Does lifestyle matter, or the way in which one is brought up? Could the lack of too little, or too much cold, hard cash be a relating factor? The answers may be found by tracing a family tree, studying the roots of those whom came before with hope of finding some elem net of explanation pertaining to choices made long before, of which still guide the present, remaining in the shadow of the one moving forward?

Review Action packed from the beginning of the book.Matica and Talon, Tamo and Tima. Will the poachers get Talon? Find out.

From the Author I just loved writing this particular book about challenged andrejected, but now loved Matica as the poachers are back and want to kill or capture Talon. Is it revenge? Matica believesit is. But she thinks they have no right since she raised him from theegg, so he could become the majestic condor he meant to be.

From the Inside Flap 'What is it, Talon?' Mira asked him, stroking him over his head, as he kept standing in front of her. Talon grunted softly then very slowly he lifted his wings and enfolded her in his wings. Bit by bit and hesitantly, as if Mira couldn't believe what Talon was doing, her hands appeared around his body. She embraced him as well. Talon stretched out his head and laid it on her shoulder, enjoying it as much as she was. And then deep sobs could be heard from her. Then a muffled, 'Oh Talon, that's so wonderful. You do it again to me because you think, as well as I do, that the first time was way too short and too quick. Oh, I love you so much. Thank you for giving me that wonderful embrace. Thank you so very much. I love it. As Aikon said, I'm a condor now.'

What can I say but it continues just as great as the other four By Coco Given For ReviewTalon, Encounter by Gigi Sedlmayer is the fifth book of the Talon series. What can I say but it continues just as great as the other four. Gigi has a way of writing that is unbelievable. It's hard to say which book was hit out of the ballpark but from what I have read I have to say she has done it five times. Way to go Gigi!! In this book, Matica and her condor friend have to fight off poachers again. This is another great action packed story of courage, compassion and thoughtfulness. I don't want to tell what is all in it, you need to get the book and find out. You won't be sorry at all. Again, I gave Gigi 5 stars and it deserves more. I highly recommend this book to all and I now wait for more fantastic books from Gigi Sedlmayer.

A well written tale about compassion and thoughtfulness By Book Reads Another great inspiring piece of work by talented author Gigi! ‘Talon, Encounter’ is the fifth book of the Talon series. By Alexia Janie Evans "Talon, Encounter" by Gigi Sedlmayer is the fifth book in the 'Talon' series. I have read all five books in this series and have to say that I loved them. It is best to read this as a series but if you were to pick up book 5 you would be able to follow along as the author does a great job with the characters in the story. In this book Matica (the young girl that the story is written around) and her young condor friend Talon are dealing with poachers. There is much more to this story but it deserves to be read and enjoyed rather than me telling you what is going to happen. Perfect book for younger teens, but as an adult i thoroughly enjoyed it too. The way Gigi Sedlmayer writes shows how the author deals with love of animals, and accepting people with disabilities.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. He is True to His Heart By Rasheed Thomas I was somewhat reluctant to write a review of this book, because I did not want to appear to be biased. I knew Lisa and came to the hospital the night of the accident, along with Karl and another colleague and friend of Lisa. Our intent was not only to be by Lisa's side as she fought for her life, but also to be a source of strength for Thomas Pierce, her father. Well, as it turned out, Thomas was our source of strength as he consoled us. I still find it amazing how he remained so calm, upbeat, friendly and sincere. He was a beacon of light in an intensive care ward that was quite gloomy. The book is amazing! What I can say is that Thomas Pierce's telling of the story of this tragedy and his family's life is completely authentic and from the heart. His positive attitude displayed in his writing is exactly how he was that night in the hospital. You can't help but feel as though you are sitting in a room listening to him, or, he has written this book in the form of a letter to you personally. Such a feat is not easily accomplished by even the most experienced writers. "The Last Rose" is one of the most awe-inspiring books I have ever read. Thomas Pierce has now provided me with the answers to how and why he has taken this tragedy and turned it into an amazing, uplifting story for all who reads it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Inspiration By Glenda F. Thompson "The Last Rose" is the most beautiful and inspiring book I have ever read. For anyone who has recently (or not) lost a loved one, it is heart warming and comforting at the very least. I am having all my friends and family read it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Last Rose has changed my life in a very positive way. By Gertrude Sharpe The account of the tragic event in the author's life and how he found a way to turn that tragedy into a tribute to the power of love is truly amazing. I think everyone who has suffered a loss(and who hasn't) will find comfort and be inspired by the philosophy put forward in this book.

A Lesson in Acceptance By Mateah A cute little lesson about accepting others and feeling as though you can be normal even if the world is telling you that you are different. I liked this book but maybe it got lost in translation because some of the grammar is incorrect. Just the same, it is a cute book for kids.

The essential schools movement has generated much controversy. The Coalition’s adherence to personalization and regionalization is not always welcome in an era of standardized testing and regulated curriculums. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of Essential Schools. The Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) is one of the most studied school design movements and has documented the process and outcomes of school reform since its inception 25 years ago. Within this essay, the researchers gather data, from internal and external sources, which examine schools using multiple measures of students’ knowledge, understanding, and performance to document the impact of CES efforts rather than relying on any one measure that may not adequately reflect students’ true proficiencies. Therefore, this review will focus on the following research questions: Are CES schools more effective than comparable schools? Do CES schools effectively restructure struggling high schools in different communities across the country? Has the conversion from larger schools into smaller schools effectively raised the graduation rates across the board?

About the Author

Diane Twohy Masson has worked in senior housing since 1999. She holds a BS in business management with a minor in marketing from Central Washington University, and is an award-winning certified aging services professional and the author of Senior Housing Marketing: How to Increase Your Occupancy and Stay Full.

Among the thousands of seniors she and her teams have assisted in finding the right senior living community, the most difficult case has been helping her own parent. Masson spent two years exploring senior housing options with her mother before finding the ideal continuing-care retirement community for her. After eight years in this independent-living setting, she helped her mother transition into assisted living. Seven years later, even as a senior housing expert, Masson struggled with the decision to move her mother into a skilled nursing community.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. So accurate! By Shannon McMillan The author does a great job describing the challenges within the classroom, throughout the school system, and amongst the children and families contributing to the achievement gap and many front-liner's difficulty in navigating it. As a mental health counselor working in the exact same area described in the book and a best friend who is a third grade teacher in Brooklyn, I can attest that none of these descriptions are exaggerated from porn addicted middle schoolers to attacking parents and paper negotiations. I enjoyed and appreciated reading my own observations and surprises about the system depicted so accurately. Unfortunately, this is only the tip of the iceberg in beginning to understand the achievement gap and the (mostly) ineffective approaches taken in NYC public schools.

Been waiting for a longer piece from Mr. Sockel for a long time, I'm glad it finally happened. After reading his thoughts and prose for years on Thought Catalog and Medium, Harris has become one of my favorite new writers. Not alt, no gimmick, just good solid writing. This book is much the same, but focused on a very important topic. One which we hear about from "experts" constantly, but never someone on the ground. And Harris is on the ground, crawling through the mud with these kids and the politics keeping them there. His voice and observations are important. And his writing his top level, keep you interested and absorbed the entire time.

A typical "white middle-class American with high ideals goes to the black ghetto to teach the underprivileged kids" kind of story. The Teach For America program he enters, aimed at giving recent college grads a crash-course in public education, was interesting to learn about. I had played with the idea of trying it myself once or twice. I give this short book 3 stars because of the vague and somewhat abrupt ending. Not really sure what kind of conclusions the author was trying to make: about his experience, the program, or inner city public education in general. If you are thinking about teaching public school, this is a good account to study first. I just wish the author had put a little more work into the ending, and drawn some definite conclusions.

In the early 1960s, most middle-class American women in their twenties had their lives laid out for them: marriage, children, and life in the suburbs. Most, but not all.Breathless is the story of a girl who represents those who rebelled against conventional expectations. Paris was a magnet for those eager to resist domesticity, and like many young women of the decade, Nancy K. Miller was enamored of everything French—from perfume and Hermès scarves to the writing of Simone de Beauvoir and the New Wave films of Jeanne Moreau. After graduating from Barnard College in 1961, Miller set out for a year in Paris, with a plan to take classes at the Sorbonne and live out a great romantic life inspired by the movies. After a string of sexual misadventures, she gave up her short-lived freedom and married an American expatriate who promised her a lifetime of three-star meals and five-star hotels. But her husband wasn't who he said he was, and she eventually had to leave Paris and her dreams behind. This stunning memoir chronicles a young woman’s coming-of-age tale, and offers a glimpse into the intimate lives of girls before feminism.

Breathless: An American Girl in Paris, by Nancy K. Miller

From Publishers Weekly In a graceful, aching memoir of her ingénue years in Paris, comparative literature professor and author Miller (What They Saved: Pieces of a Jewish Past) re-creates a time of fledgling sexual liberation and rueful homecoming. Breaking away from home with her intellectual, Jewish parents in Manhattan, where she had felt conned to live during her college years at Barnard, Miller blissfully took off for study at the Sorbonne in fall of 1961, resolved to be the Jean Seberg character in Jean-Luc Godard&'s Breathless and be adventurous and independent. In that pre-feminist era, she quickly learned that sleeping with men was effortless but achieving sexual satisfaction was not. In her naivety, as her time in Paris lengthened and she won a Fulbright teaching fellowship, she often confused sex with finding the right dream-companion á la Simone de Beauvoir, and was frequently disappointed, from falling for the leather-clad beatnik on the motorcycle, Leo; the earnest Tunisian student Bernard, who wanted to marry her; and the overbearing Irishman Jim Donovan, the head of a self-run language school, who hired her and married her. In her sweetly ironical, fondly forgiving look back at her youth, it actually took an affair with a humble German carpenter named Hans to help Miller escape her nice-Jewish-girl destiny and find her way home again. (Nov.)

From Booklist In the early 1960s, college students flocked to Europe, and Paris was the pinnacle of every trip. No wonder Miller finds herself drawn to the City of Lights for her first excursion away from the confines of her conservative, middle-class Jewish home. After graduation from Barnard College, she persuades her parents to let her study in France, where she promptly pushes aside American conservatism for more liberal sexual and intellectual mores. Miller’s memoir will resonate with women who, over the years, have been fascinated by Jean Seberg’s role as Patricia in the Godard film Breathless (1960). The movie is frequently cited for Patricia’s independence, self-assurance, and fearlessness—traits Miller seeks. Her look back is filled with vintage vignettes of garret apartments, matronly concierges, and the silk-lingerie splurges of a poor young student’s milieu. She considers marriage to a Tunisian man, suffers through an illegal abortion, and ends up with an American expatriate who is more con man than the connoisseur he pretends to be. Readers may wish for even more photographs as Miller’s memoir captures that influential era’s essence. --Laurie Borman

Review "A coming-of-age tale covering the author's 20s in Paris, where she studied, worked, lived on her own for the first time, fell in and out of love, and found solid ground beneath her feet . . . Articulate, keen and satisfying."--Kirkus Reviews "Miller's highly personal memoir is at the same time a vivid portrait of a city and an era as youth culture begins to take hold -- to the bewilderment of parents and, more often than they'll admit, of the young people themselves." --Joanna scutts, Biographile"In the early 1960s, most middle-class American women in their twenties had their lives laid out for them: marriage, children, and life in the suburbs. Most, but not all. Breathless is the story of a girl who represents those who rebelled against conventional expectations."--Meg Rynott, The Whynott Blog "With all the melancholy detachment of the French movies that brought her to Paris in the first place, Miller has created an artful portrait of her younger self, one which doesn't shy away from her flaws, but displays them proudly." --Emma Cueto, Bustle"Nancy's misadventures make for an exciting read and just may inspire you to take risks in your own life."--Emily Laurence, Metro USBittersweet tale of author Nancy K. Miller's "escape" to Paris in the early 1960s. She hopes to sample Paris breathlessly à la Jean Seberg, but finds more disappointment than romance...A very funny, cautionary memoir by the feminist and literary professor.--Cara Magazine “A real-life Dud Avocado, this memoir is a provocative account of a feminist scholar’s sexual awakening set amid the backdrop of 1960s Paris.”—Library Journal“Miller’s memoir will resonate with women who, over the years, have been fascinated by Jean Seberg’s role as Patricia in the Godard film Breathless (1960) . . . Her look back is filled with vintage vignettes of garret apartments, matronly concierges, and the silk-lingerie splurges of a poor young student’s milieu.”—Booklist“Breathless, a deliriously satisfying account of erotic awakening and disillusionment, unfolds as a chain of tightly crafted, riveting vignettes, each episode as mesmerizing as the city enshrined at the book’s center. Simone de Beauvoir would have loved this story. Jean-Paul Sartre, too. But Nancy K. Miller is more entertaining than both of them put together. Her book offers a beautifully distilled parable about the difficulties of finding a direct path to happiness.”—Wayne Koestenbaum, author of Andy Warhol"This cautionary memoir of a girl's fantasy adventure in Paris gone awry reads like a witty novel. Its vivid scenes are frequently hilarious, sometimes sad, and always engrossing. That it really happened only makes it better."—Alix Kates Shulman, author of To Love What Is"A steamy portrait of the jeune fille before she became a feminist. A wonderful reminder of what it meant to be a good daughter determined to become a bad girl in the roiling sixties. I loved every chapter of this American’s sex-obsessed quest for identity in Paris."—Susan Gubar, author of Memoir of a Debulked Woman"Witty, wise, poignant, and funny, Breathless is an extraordinary memoir about a young woman’s adventures and misadventures in Paris, a city that was for her as much an idea as a place. Miller’s vividly told memories, keen intelligence, gentle irony, and striking gift for narrative pacing held me captive from beginning to end."—Siri Hustvedt, author of What I Loved and The Summer Without Men"Surprising, daring, funny, wise, and profound."—Elaine Showalter, author of A Jury of Her Peers“Breathless, Nancy Miller's wry and wonderful new memoir about a romantic (and chastening) student sojourn she spent in Paris in the early 1960s, is a delicious, picaresque, often hilarious female 'coming of age' story—full of zest and pathos and more than a few glints of Proustian profondeur. . . . [Miller] offers a story at once salutary, intelligent, deeply humorous, and ineluctably bittersweet: the souvenir of a magical mise-en-scène, from a brilliant young woman who paid attention to it all.”—Terry Castle, author of The Professor and Other Writings"An artful portrait of youthful indiscretion in a bygone time."—Bustle

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Breathless for Paris: a beautiful memoir of loves past By Mitzi Hol I loved Breathless--An American Girl in Paris. It is a wonderful memoir. In particular, I would recommend this book to those (like me) who, at some point or other, freely chose to leave their homes and try life abroad... for a while or for good. This book will speak to them quite personally. It is the story of a young woman's life in the 1960s seen through the one lens that more than any other shapes and frames the life of girls, especially at the earliest stages: Love. It is a book of love stories; it illustrates how our sentimental past determines who we are or intend to be. Love in this book is not a trivial, side, empty-calorie snack: it is the main course (served à la française--with elegance and irony). Most of the action takes place in France, where the author moved as soon as she finished Barnard College and her first serious relationship in New York. Her love for Paris and for the classics (films and novels) had led her to believe that there could be a better life, more interesting and exciting, than the one her parents were not-so subtly hoping to mastermind for their daughter in America. France is where she will become the heroine of her own book. But Paris awaits her with an unexpected amount of both love and its opposite (loneliness, despair, insecurity, fragility, abuse). From light-hearted love (one-night flings) to heavy-hearted relationships (destructive marriage), Miller follows her passion for places and people with relentless curiosity and courage. If the girl's arrival in Paris could fittingly be accompanied by Gershwin's tune "An American in Paris," the end of Breathless could be better scored by Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte." In going to Paris, had the young woman's subconscious dream been to vindicate all the Emma-Bovary of the world? Must Emma Bovary necessarily die? Or is there life after the fall? And could the fall itself be the only healthy expression of life, a form of action, experimentation, revolution--an antidote to passivity, homogenization, spiritual coma...?One of the most interesting aspects of this story is the way in which Miller's re-telling of "her" life as a young woman makes us aware of the fact that our lives are never quite only our own. The force of her parents' influence in her decisions, and in her way of looking at herself and the world around her, has a huge responsibility in the course the events will take in this story. After all, first and foremost, this heroine's escape had been more "from somewhere" rather than simply "to somewhere" else--as all escapes are. She was attempting to run as far as possible from her parents, NYC, and the zeitgeist they embodied: the stifling, bourgeois, 1950s American family, with its snobbery and hypocrisy, its complexes of inferiority (vis à vis their origins not exactly Mayflowerish) and their arrogant entitlement (due to their all-too-new richesse). In subtle yet complex patterns, Breathless waves the story of one American Jewish girl in Paris with the angst, inner and outer turmoil of an entire generation. A generation of girls that was just then learning to say a resounding "No!" to family, husband, children, god and nation.I will give Breathless as a present to many of my (expatriate and ex-expatriate) friends, and I am sure it would make for a great discussion book in any book-club.

By Marci Alboher From the moment I picked it up, I was transported to Paris in 1961, and to the mind of our ingenue who is both a particular product of her place in time and a stand-in for every woman tasting the world for the first time. Gorgeous writing. Refreshingly honest. And as riveting as a well-crafted diary you feel you shouldn't be reading. Have been recommending this book to anyone who will listen.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't put it down!! By Kate Trebuss Couldn't put this down. Set in Paris in the 1960's, Miller's story of navigating the choppy waters of self-invention, love, and family during her 20's feels astonishingly "of the moment." Miller writes eloquently and sardonically of her quest to live her own Great Story modeled after the lives of the audacious, non-conforming heroines of the novels and films of her "Good Jewish" girlhood in Manhattan. And while Miller's experiences don't ultimately read quite like those of the plots she admires most (she is simply too smart, too obsessively self-conscious, and too wry ever to become one of the languid Hollywood heroines she idolizes), hers is the "truer," more textured story of what it means to be a woman who both longs for and balks at the part of protagonist in her own romance narrative.Writing about a moment before the "invention" of second wave feminism in the 1970s, Breathless gets at a profound tension that many educated young women continue to feel today as they take stock of their wants and needs and ambitions in the years after college and try to figure out who they are and what they want -- and, tougher still in some ways, how these desires relate to what everyone else around them says they should want.Miller is a powerful, funny, intensely self-reflective writer who manages to capture much of what it feels like to be engulfed by contradictory desires during one's 20's, while weaving her own story into the incredible landscape of 1960's Paris and providing the reader with a rare glimpse into the ways in which seemingly distant world events and cultural memory are messily entwined with our most personal experiences of day to day life. LOVED THIS BOOK!!
