1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another wonderful story from Destry Ramey! By Frederick B. Godwin I own the entire series of books written by Destry Ramey. Each book is very special. I have read the three earlier books to my elementary students since they were first published. The newest book in the series is a wonderful addition. All four of the pugs are still important parts of the story as is the new "star" Feather. When I first read to my students about Feather being thrown from the car in a brown paper bag, I had tears running down my cheeks. The children were so concerned that I was crying. I told them that I just couldn't imagine someone doing that to a little puppy. They all agreed. This lead to a discussion about the way to treat animals and how to help animals in need. Several students said that they have rescue dogs at home. The story is so uplifting and joyful. There are so many themes in this book that can be talked about with elementary children. My class loved that Max was able to adopt Lucy. The race at the end of the book was so exciting. I read The Brown Paper Bag to my class the next day and the students got even more excited about the race! Jesus Chavez has done a wonderful job with the illustrations. His art work compliments the story perfectly. I'm buying a copy of this book for each great niece and nephew in the family and one for our school library.

Ramey has once again made me fall in love with the Pugs and now with Feather By Midnight Butterfly I was almost in tears and ready to go rescue...wait, you'll have to read it to see who I wanted to rescue. As with the other books in the Pug Series (www.ThePugs.com) Ms. Ramey has once again made me fall in love with the Pugs and now with Feather. Although written for children, the lessons in these books are lessons that adults need to remember too. Love you Feather and Ms. Ramey.

The fact that it is a true story about a real dog (Feather) makes it all the more appealing ! Great story for all young ages. The illustrations are extremely well done. This book undoubtedly deserves a read. Both my grands kids loved this clever story.

Lately I've been trying to build my collection of single Bible stories. I've also got a first-grader learning to read, so Zonderkids I Can Read book, Adventure Bible The Good Samaritan seemed like a good fit-- plus, it's one of my favorite parables. With only a sentence or two on each of its 32 pages, this slim paperback Level 2 reader kept my three sons' attentions.I liked that this version puts the familiar story into context as a parable Jesus told in response to a question about obtaining eternal life. I also liked that the text and illustrations of the priest and the Levite didn't portray them as "bad guys" but rather as people making the wrong choice because of fear and anxiety. This choice leaves the characters open for discussion. My son wanted to know, "Why did they just leave him there?" The book also ends with a simple description of the relationship between Jews and Samaritans, "In Bible times, the Jews and Samaritans did not get along. They were foreigners and did not know a lot about each other" (32). I felt this provided another jumping off point for relevant discussion.While I thought this easy reader was very nicely done, I asked my oldest what he thought of the book and has response was "Just OK." I think this was owing to the fact that his brain was completely filled with his current obsession over Lego Minecraft.... sigh! Though this is part of the Adventure Bible series, it is a quiet story meant for reflection. I plan to pull it out again when Oldest Son is in a quieter mood.*I received this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review.*

Just received in the mail By Anderson The Good Samaritan which is part of the Adventure Bible "I Can Read!" series is an exceptional example of a Bible story simplified for younger readers. My seven year old read through the story very easily and my five year old thoroughly enjoyed it, too. The illustrations in the story were vivid and colorful which was a drastic improvement from most children's Bible stories. In addition to this, the narrative was very faithful to the biblical text. The story even include the surrounding context for why Jesus told this parable. Ultimately, the book was great in provoking conversation between my two oldest boys about what it means to love the Lord our God and our neighbors.1 John 4: 20-2120 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.James 2: 14-1714 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? The Good Samaritan By T R D There are several books in the I Can Read! / Adventure Bible series, and The Good Samaritan is one of the newest releases. Our family does not own the Adventure Bible, NIV or the Adventure Bible for Early Readers, so I cannot compare these books to those (to see if the content is duplicated). We do, however, own both the Adventure Bible for Toddlers and the Adventure Bible Storybook, and I can tell you that the wording and illustrations are not duplicated across these three editions. The books in the I Can Read! / Adventure Bible series are worded with simpler phrasing and shorter sentences than you will find in the Adventure Bible Storybook.The Good Samaritan is a re-telling of the parable of the good Samaritan/neighbor which can be found in the Bible in Luke 10:25-37. I did find a couple inconsistencies/literary freedoms in this book, but overall I think it is well done and is easy to understand. The story is accompanied by big, colorful illustrations.At the end of The Good Samaritan is a page containing "People in Bible Times" (which has an illustration and description of a Samaritan and quotes Luke 10:27) and "Words to Treasure" (Luke 10:36-37).The I Can Read! / Adventure Bible series are categorized as reading level 2 ("Reading with Help") and the stories do not feel "choppy" like you might find in some learn-to-read books. With a retail price under $4 per book, I find these books to be a great value.FTC Declaration: The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book or advanced reading copy. They are rather large and flimsy. One of ours is already coming off the page and one is bent badly. The flaps should be more sturdy for young curious readers. The story is fun and my kids enjoy discovering what's under the flaps.

About the Author Lane Fredrickson is a veteran of the United States Air Force and holds degrees in psychology and English. Lane’s first published children’s book, Watch Your Tongue, Cecily Beasley, was published by Sterling Publishing in 2012. Her website, RhymeWeaver.com, is full of image-based tutorials on poetry and writing. She lives in FL with a volleyball player and a basketball player (who also happen to be her children), her husband, and a very small Yorkie named Holly.   Michael Robertson graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in painting. He spent ten years as a toy designer and character developer before trying his hand at illustration. His work has appeared on many children's products, greeting cards, and magazines, and has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators. Michael lives in downtown Cleveland, where he enjoys painting, cooking and listening to the extensive collection of vintage soul, jazz, and Brazilian music he has acquired over the years. After many years out of school, I have recently taken an interest in the details of phonics. I have started reading the first book of the wonderful old McGuffey's Readers. How to Teach Phonics adds the equivalent of teachers notes to my pursuit by providing a systematic approach for the first four years of reading including general rules for pronunciation.

I am not the most technical person there is and most of the time rely on my brothers to have things fixed around the house. It can be quite inconvenient though to need something and not be able to use it simply because you do not know how to fix it when it breaks down. I got this book over the weekend and absolutely loved it. Harry has taught me so much in terms of fixing simple bugs that I encounter on my Echo. It has never been so much simpler and I am definitely glad that I can now do without my brother's help!

About the Author Irene van der Zande is an internationally-recommended personal safety and child development expert who has directly taught thousands of people of all ages and abilities how to take charge of their emotional and physical safety and how to develop positive relationships that enrich their lives. Irene is the founder and executive director of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, a global nonprofit that has protected over 3 million children, teens, and adults from bullying, abuse, harassment, assault, kidnapping, and other violence through greater awareness, action, and skills.The inspiration for starting Kidpower happened in 1985, when, in a public place with people standing all around, Irene protected a group of eight young children, including her own two, from a man who was threatening to kidnap them. Very important for safety, and also useful basic skills for interpersonal relationships and managing one's own emotions (e.g. de-escalation instead of lashing out). I wish more kids had these books to better learn this stuff from an early age.

It taught me to never give up on myself when I may feel doubtful of my personal achievements. It is an easy read with powerful lessons! I would recommend purchasing this book. About the Author

Josephine Goldman was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Raised in a small town, she enjoyed the connections and deep friendships life in the tightknit community offered and was encouraged to pursue a life of growth and learning.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with an education degree, Goldman taught young children with disabilities before making the move into school administration. She became an elementary principal and a director of pupil services after securing her master's degree.

Adoption has always been close to Goldman’s heart, inspiring the perfect backdrop for Misbegotten. Prior to novel writing, Goldman worked on numerous grants and newsletters and has been published in a local magazine.

She enjoys yoga, theater, traveling, and any activity involving her friends and family. She has two grown children, four stepchildren, and resides in Florida with her husband, Mark.

By BlueMoonAnnie Inspiring Adoption Story, Told From All SidesThe book Misbegotten by Josephine Goldman is an extremely interesting perspective on adoption from all possible angles. It is told through the lenses of several participants in an adoption story that follows one family through four generations.You will get to know well the woman who gave up her daughter for adoption when she was only 17 after a heartbreaking relationship with her high school boyfriend. You are witness to their sad and complicated lives as they grow up in the projects in Milwaukee. You will become close to these characters as you empathize with the sad lives they live, in homes of two different dysfunctional families. Luckily for Ann, the main character in the book, she was given up for adoption or you are sure that the cycle of poverty and sadness would have been hers to share.Ann was selected as the fourth adopted child in a wonderful, caring and positive family of considerable means. She tells her stories of eight years in a Catholic grade school, followed by four years of high school in two different beautiful homes in Wisconsin. Her father was an architect and her mother was a stay-at-home Mom during Ann's first five years.There is a lot of suspense in the book as you wait to find out what happens to her biological Mom and Dad. There is intense love shown both between her biological parents, between Ann and her adopted family and even in the end between Ann and her biological Mom.It is a wonderful story that will keep you interested and emotionally involved as you quickly read through to find out the end! I highly recommend this book for book clubs as there are many different characters that could be analyzed.

They touch your heart and welcome you into their lives.The story revolves around accidental pregnancy, adoption and all the circumstances and emotions involved. As a former social worker, I'm amazed at the accuracy of the portrayal of adoption, not only from the legal standpoint, but also from the emotional standpoint of all parties who are involved.It's clear that Misbegotten is a labor of love, written by someone who has deep understanding and sensitivity to the gift that is adoption.I highly recommend Misbegotten to individuals and book groups alike. Enjoy this good read!

By Sarasotagail Just finished the lovely easy read by Josephine Goldman called Misbegotten.. After working as a hairrdresser for many years I heard first hand of many Edina MN adoptions. I heard of the joys, the trials & tribulations from many participating adopted and adopting parties. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in adoption. However, this book is more than just for those folks. In my most critical assessment, or my pearl for those like me. A couple times things got a bit too detailed for me. However, in fairness, I do believe details may have been necessary to capture as many of the characters individual perspectives of the events. Surely, whether adopted, thinking of adopting, or just longing for a good read this story is insightful and yes - lovely! For all, it's a great reminder of the wonderful freedom of knowing we all fall short in our performance in life. Yet when we get back on tract and living a life God wants for all his children, less judgment, a life of forgiveness, acceptance, and yes sometimes walking away hopefully, with grace in detachment we are all better for it.
