By Pirate2240 Looking for a great way to teach your kids about prayer, its importance, and why it is critical for believers of Jesus to pray? Then look no further than Prayer Works: Prayer Training and Strategy for Kids from Stephen Kendrick and Alex Kendrick along with Amy Parker, just on the heels of their successful movie War Room which is all about the amazing power of prayer.Coupled with wonderful colorful illustrations this hard cover book discusses such topics as What is Prayer? Why Should We Pray? What Do We Pray For? Does God Really Hear Me? Where Do I Pray? Why Do My Prayers Matter? What Is the Best Way to Pray? Is There a Wrong Way to Pray? When Should I Pray? and Will God Answer My Prayers? Each of these topics are taken into further details to outline simply conversations your child is likely to ask to give them some ideas to consider implementing in their own prayer life.The best part is at the back of this book is a section for kids to log in their own prayers, along with specific pages like praying for the sick, praying for my family, for others, and even a place to track those wonderful faith building answered prayers. For me this is a must have for parents of young children to give them a resource they can refer to for answers on prayer and thus a 5 out of 5 stars in this reviewers opinion.

Wright Prayer Works: Prayer Training and Strategy for Kids by Stephen Kendrick and Alex Kendrick with Amy Parker is part of a family of books that has come out in conjunction with the movie War Room. Family is a great way to describe this grouping of books because each seems to be aimed at a different age or gender. This one is aimed at late elementary/early middle school ages.This book really is a training and strategy book for prayer. It is put in simple age appropriate terms, but quite honestly, if an adult could get past the bright colors and cartoon pictures, this would serve as a great introduction to prayer for many believers. In fact, this is information and teaching that many Christians probably don't understand about such an elementary topic.The way this book is set up, it could be used many different ways. There are 10 chapters, but each chapter is broken down into 5 subtopics. It could be used as a devotional where each day is a subtopic or it could be used in a once a week classroom setting where a chapter a week is covered. It also could just be read straight through as it is.There are also LOTS of supplemental pages in the back that function as a sort of prayer workbook. There is a prayer journal, pages that look at different kinds of prayers and praying for different people and even a short message for parents. They are simple, but I may even consider filling these out to help me in my prayer life.If you are looking for a book to help children learn about prayer, this is an awesome choice. It has solid doctrine, is age appropriate, and is a better resource than many others I've seen published.I was provided this book free of charge from BH Kids in return for my honest opinion.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good book on prayer for young elementary age By Joan N. This is a good book for young children on what prayer is and how to go about it. It not only teaches about prayer but has kids actually praying too.It starts with explaining what prayer is, then why we should pray, what we should pray for, how to pray, etc. Each reading is about the equivalent of one page of text, taking the child maybe five minutes to read. Some are even shorter. There is a Bible verse at the beginning of the reading and an encouragement to specifically pray at the end. There are also cute illustrations on each page. There are twenty two pages at the back of the book with space for children to write down their prayers. There is also a prayer for salvation near the back as well as a Parent Connection with suggestions for a directed conversation about prayer.I think this book would work well with younger school age children, around ages 6 to 9. The style of the illustrations might be too childish looking for older children. It would make a good daily devotional on prayer.I received a complimentary copy of this book through Icon Media for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

BRAVO!” The crowd cheered and clapped as Pearl Swamp took a bow. Her diamond-studded costume billowed around her gold tail on the sparkling stage. Members of the audience whistled and tossed her beautiful bouquets of sea lavender. Pearl waved as merfolk from all over the ocean cried out, “We love you, Pearl,” and “You are the best actress in the whole merworld!” She couldn’t believe her good luck. A famous director had picked her out of all the merstudents at Trident Academy to star as Fishlein Maria in his play The Sound of Waves. As the curtain closed, a crowd of fans and reporters rushed to Pearl’s side. “Miss Swamp, may I have my picture sketched with you?” asked a small mergirl. Pearl nodded and lifted her pointy nose in the water as the merartist Piddock Picasso sketched her on a piece of kelp for her fan.

Nice story about friendship By This Kid Reviews Books This was a nice book about friendship, and about how good things can come out of things that don’t go exactly as planned. Ms. Dadey has a great writing style that makes you believe that you are actually under the sea with Pearl and the others. I was laughing at the fact that the play was called The Little Human – a play that is a play on The Little Mermaid. ;) There is other such humor in the book that will delight kids. The illustrations are nice black&white line-type pictures spread throughout the story and add a nice touch to the text. The reading level makes it perfect for young readers, but I think older kids will enjoy the story also. It is nice that the books are a series because you get to follow characters, but each book can be read independently without being lost. The characters are fun and kids can relate to them (even though they are mermaids/men). Don’t let The Mermaid Tales series fool you – boys will like the series too!

The only thing is that she is on a 6th grade reading level, so she read the whole series in less than a week. She does reread them though and loves the fact that she owns them all.

By John Thank you Dr. Susan Louise Peterson for publishing this highly informative book "Is my Child Autistic or Delayed?". First off, as a parent I am reading this book primarily for information purposes, not so that I can diagnose my child one way or another, but more so that as she develops (currently 2 years old) some of my concerns can be belayed or addressed.The book is very clearly written, and from the psychological perspective, the author is very intuitive at predicting the concerns of parents such as myself, and thereby preemptively addresses the concerns. The book is interesting in its format because it lays out a behavior often associated (or thought to be associated) with autism, such as "blank stares" and then provides both the parents concern - my child stares blankly at objects, is she autistic- and then provides the school psychologists perspective on the concern, and what it may or may not mean. Some other interesting areas of concern are: sensory issues, unawareness to dangerous situations, and avoidance behaviors.All in all, this is a great starting place towards understanding your child's behavior, and whether or not particular behavioral traits are the symptom of an underlying spectrum disorder, or just delayed development, or nothing to worry about at all.This book is written by a professional with real life experience, yet is accessible to those who need it the most: everyday parents like me. Well done.

Helpful and Informative By Elizabeth Barbarick (Stuffed Shelves) My child is not autistic or delayed, but it was good to read about the signs parents should notice if they're child is showing symptoms of autism. Learning the most you can about this subject is smart, because you become aware of signs you can be more prepared if your child starts showing symptoms. There is nothing worse than not knowing and guessing what might or might not be wrong with your child.This book was very easy to understand, and the layout was simple and made reading this book not only easy, but enjoyable. The author is a school psychologist and has many years dealing with autistic children, so she knows the signs and symptoms well enough to write such an efficient book. The layout was a bit different than I expected, but it got the point across accurately and I found it to be informative to both myself, and my husband.This book is fairly short and can be read in one sitting by most. It's very informative and I recommend it to any parent, teacher, family member, or friend who has as any questions about the signs of autism. Of course, this is just information to introduce you to the topic, any serious questions you might have should be directed to your family practitioner. This was such a great and easy read I would gladly rate this a 5/5.

Davis Is My Child Autistic or Delayed?, by Susan Peterson, is a very informative read on what goes into diagnosing a child with Autism as well as how many times the diagnosis is improperly given. It starts off by briefly explaining how this diagnosis is so hastily given, leaving a child incorrectly labeled as Autistic. Just like almost any type of diagnosis for developmental issues, many factors are taken into consideration, and just like any other issue, every single child/person will have different symptoms or reactions. The author does a great job at explaining this! What I liked most about this book is that it makes it easy for anyone to understand autism. It breaks it down into simpler terms and takes out all the medical wording that no one but the medical field understands, or when it can't the author would explain it in simpler terms for the audience. I myself so not have any ties to someone with autism, but I think that it is good to be educated in all areas because you never know when you might have that connections. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to better understand Autism or Delayed developmental issues. Great job to the author!

This was a gift and since child lives on farm and they have 'red' International tractors it was great! All the Tractor Mac books are perfect for encouraging young readers!

Great kids books By Aaron DeMott I've seen these books for a few years at the local tractor show, and this year decided to look through them (My son turned 1 earlier this year and is just at the point where he can sit still for a story... and he LOVES tractors). The illustrations are colorful and engaging, and the stories are simply delightful, with lessons on friendship and such. In "Tractor Mac: Tune Up", Tractor Mac has to go to the "Tractor Doctor", and learns that doctors keep us healthy and help fix us when we break. (My son is having a minor operation soon, thus the choice of this particular title.)The other thing I like about these books is the accuracy of the illustrations. Some stories settle for "cute" when making the illustrations, but Billy Steers does a great job of making appealing, yet accurate illustrations. One can pick out the various make and model of Tractor Mac and his friends, and the inside cover of each book has a picture labeling each tractor part, along with an illustration specific to the book. (This one has a cut-away view of a 4 cylinder tractor engine, appropriate to a Farmall Super M).I am going to buy the rest of the series for my kids.

Saya and her father visit her mother every week, but it’s not the same as having her mother at home. Saya’s father writes letters every evening, contacting politicians and reporters to try to get help. One evening, Saya decides to write her own story. Her father sends it to a newspaper, and a few days later, a reporter comes to interview them. As a result of the story in the paper, Saya’s mother gets to see a judge who allows her to go home while she waits for her papers to come through. In the author’s note, Edwidge Danticat tells the story of how she and her parents were separated by immigration until she was twelve years old. Grades K-3.Pros: Kids will be fascinated by Saya’s story and inspired by the way she helps her mom. The illustrations are beautiful, with bold colors and symbols from Mama’s stories woven into the pictures of the family.Cons: Expect a lot of questions about what is going on with this family from readers unfamiliar with immigration laws.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. best for ages 5-8 By Vamos a Leer This book, best for ages 5-8, tells the story of a Haitian, immigrant family in the U.S. and a young girl who, amidst pain and separation, finds solace in her mother’s tales. As the protagonist overcomes some difficult challenges, she also learns to recognize the power of her own words.The story centers on Saya, who is struggling with the separation from her mother, who has just been sent to “Sunshine Correctional” for not having “the right papers”. The name of the prison where Saya’s mom is being held reflects the practice of sugar-coating the real traumas that immigration laws and the separation of families inflict. In Danticat’s Author’s Note at the back of the book, she explains how this story is largely inspired by her own experiences as a child in Haiti dealing with the trauma of separation from her parents who moved to the U.S. Her parents tried to send for her and her brother, but could never succeed for they lacked “the right papers”. Danticat explains that she was always fascinated by “the idea of having the right papers” and how this abstract platitude weighed on many of her childhood memories: “As children in Haiti, my brother and I sometimes played writing games, making up passports, visas, and other documents that might one day reunite us with our parents.” Additionally, Danticat writes, “According to the Unites States’ Enforcement (ICE), the people Saya refers to as the immigration police, over 70,000 parents of American-born children have been jailed and deported in recent years. This book is dedicated to those children, who, like Saya, are dreaming of the day when their mother, or father, or both parents, will come home.” Danticat recreates her own childhood memories while infusing the story with elements of action, hope and change.The story begins with Saya listening to her mother’s voice on the answering machine late at night. Mama is not at home and Saya listens to the answering machine when she misses her mother. The voice says in Haitian Creole, “Please, leave us good news!”: “Tampri kite bon ti nouvèl pou nou!” Mama’s voice foreshadows the hopeful charge of the story and the goal of “good news” that drives the protagonist’s actions.Saya and Papa go to visit Mama in prison and Saya is overwhelmed by sadness upon seeing her mother. In the short time they have together, Mama tells Saya traditional Haitian stories about the wosiyòl, “a beautiful nightingale who loves the taste of a sweet cottony fruit called a soursop”: “Mama leans over and hums the wosiyòl’s song in my ear. The melody is as soft as Mama’s touch and as sweet as a real soursop”. Wosiyòl is also Mama’s nickname for Saya, as she too loves the taste of the soursop fruit.This reference to the tales of the wosiyòl, coupled with Staub’s evocative illustrations, presents the songbird as a symbol of freedom. Throughout the book there are also illustrations of birds perched on the interior windowsill of Mama’s jail cell, and caged songbirds in the decorative margins of the text, which represent, as readers may surmise, a lack of freedom. During Saya’s visit with Mama, Mama gives her a package with cassette tapes of her “wind-chime voice singing about the soursop and the nightingale” so that Saya can listen to her mother’s voice before bed. When Saya puts the cassette tape in she listens to Mama’s songs and an additional tale that Mama made up herself. In an illustration to match, Staub paints Mama as a beautiful spirit coming to visit Saya at night, with songbirds, hearts, stars and flowers swirling around her in a dream-like flurry. However, Mama is also shown with a rope strung across her arm, and two caged birds tied to either end. Her story changes the family’s future.On the serious side, through her honest storytelling, Danticat provides real faces to the debate over immigration. They investigate bugs by digging up dirt and crouching down to get a closer look. Youngsters ask continuous questions seeking answers to something they wonder about. However, with time it seems students lose this need to search out answers. Authors Denise Krebs and Gallit Zvi encourage teachers to bring back the passion of inquiry with Genius Hour. The Genius Hour Guidebook offers a plan to “foster passion, wonder, and inquiry in the classroom”.The Genius Hour movement has spread throughout classrooms. Search for #geniushour on Twitter and the results are endless. So, why is this not happening more in classrooms? Krebs and Zvi offer a plan for teachers who hesitate trying Genius Hour. The opening chapter explains what is Genius Hour and why students need it. “Genius Hour gives students time to find and follow their passion.” The authors point out that change can be scary, but good stuff can happen when we are a bit uncomfortable.Introducing Genius Hour begins with a basic plan. Step 1: Inspire Your Class - Inspirational videos and picture books are a great starting point. Set up the learning environment so that “students know they’re supported and encouraged to be creative”. Step 2: Brainstorm with Students - Suggestions in the book include listing the things you love to do and learn, things you are good at, and things you wonder. Wonder Walls or Passion Walls can be displayed to inspire others. Step 3: Create an Inquiry Question - Authors suggest taking time to teach students the difference between a Google-able question and a thick question. Review From a gaggle of geese to an ostentation of peacocks, a gathering of collective nouns.A brief forward introduces the idea that all animals "have varied social lives, family systems, and living situations," ending with the note that "Maybe animals aren't too different from people, actually." Indeed, as each animal group is highlighted, readers learn that koalas are mostly solitary, penguins "love being together," and female giraffes "make friends and avoid the giraffes they don't get along with." The tone is conversational and sometimes witty. The art is spectacular: exquisite pen-and-ink drawings that capture collective animal personalities, filled with either masterful watercolor washes or carefully selected scraps of fabric and wallpaper. Some feathers have found their ways onto the birds, too. The drollest spread features sheep, gazing blandly at the reader, their coats showing patterned knits, some of which appear to unravel off the page. The text mentions how, when threatened, they will "run swiftly in a wild and woolly whirlwind." Worthy of reading aloud and studying further in PreK-2 By Sunday Cummins Just inside the title page, there's a definition for "collective noun" and then a note from the author that implies multiple main ideas for this book like "animals have varied social lives, family systems, and living situations" and "each specials lives in a unique social order." This would be a delightful book to read aloud in the primary grades and use as a mentor text for informational writing. I looked up "collective nouns" and found a list of animals - many of which aren't in the book. Once the students have enjoyed listening to this book read aloud and had an opportunity to look through or reread for themselves, there's lots of room for asking questions ("What do you call a group of X?"), researching, and writing. Anna Wright's art is worthy of looking at closely and even trying out as well.

Gorgeous and unique illustrations with unique and fascinating information about animals By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: Each page of this book shows a group of animals, gives their group name and tells a little bit about them. For instance, a group of peacocks is called an ostentation and often live in groups with one male and several females.ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in mixed media including with fabric and feathers. They are unique and quite gorgeous and fun to look at. I especially enjoyed the happy camels and the peacocks with their beautiful feathers.THE GOOD: There is some very good and short information about each group of animals in this book. The facts are not necessarily widely known such as female elephants living separately from the bull elephants. This is an excellent book to share with a child who loves animals and is especially a great book for the classroom. This would be the perfect addition to a unit on animals.THE NOT AS GOOD: The font has two problems. One, the titles of the animal groups are written in very fancy cursive. It is difficult to read. Second, the font is very very small. I feel there was plenty of room to make that font just a little bigger for children (and adults!) who will be reading this by themselves.AGE RECOMMENDATION: Advertised for ages 3-7, but I think the high vocabulary lends itself better to grades 1-3.NOTE: I received a free ARC copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I would have never guess that I would enjoy reading a book about a 15 year old boy as much as I did. This book had the same kind of humor mixed in with heartfelt moments that were found in the previous book. I have to say that I think I enjoyed Winger a bit more than this book but I still felt like this was a solid story. I do think that you will need to read Winger prior to this book to really understand the impact of the things that are happening.This story picks up at the beginning of Ryan Dean's senior year. He is now 15 and a lot of things are different at school this year. A lot of his friends have graduated and don't play a part of this story. Ryan Dean is shocked to find himself with a freshman roommate in a tiny little room. Not just any freshman, a 12 year old freshman. Ryan Dean is anything but impressed especially when his roommate, Sam Abernathy, demonstrates a few of his rather quirky behaviors. The rugby team has to make a few changes this year as well. A large portion of the team graduated so there are lot of spots to fill.I wasn't sure that Winger needed a follow up book. It was such a moving book that stands alone on its own. I still think that you can read that book and never pick this one up and be completely satisfied with the story. I did really like seeing how the events of the first book impacted the lives of the characters in the future. I think that is one of the real strengths of this book. These characters are not as okay as they would want you to believe and I really liked the way that they watched out for each other and helped each other through everything. I don't think that this book would work well as a stand alone novel.I liked watching Ryan Dean grow in this book. He has been through a lot and doesn't always make the right choices. One thing that I love about Ryan Dean is that when he realizes that he was wrong about something, he is not afraid to admit it and apologize. When his friends give him some advice, he takes it and tries to heal.This book had a lot of funny moments. I didn't find any laugh out loud moments but I did have a grin on my face for large portions of the story. I liked the artwork even though there wasn't as much of it as in the first book. (I read an ARC copy so it is possible that the final copy has more artwork than the version that I read.) This story didn't have any really shocking moments but it was overall a worthwhile read.I would recommend this book to fans of YA who enjoyed the first book in the series, Winger. This is the second book by Andrew Smith that I have read and I am planning on reading some of his other works very soon.I received an advance reader edition of this book from Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers via Edelweiss for the purpose of providing an honest review.

Terrific Companion Piece By Edward Lorn Andrew Smith is one of my new favorite authors, and Ryan Dean West is one of my favorite fictional characters because he doesn't feel like a fictional character. He deals with real problems and usually screws up because he's human. There's a big difference between Winger and Stand-Off, but that's not a bad thing.Stand-Off reminded me a lot of the video game Bully, whereas Winger reminded me of that eighties flick Lucas. Who out there remembers Lucas? Corey Haim and Kerri Green, and Charlie Sheen before he started sucking up coke and hookers in equal amounts? #tigerblood #duhwinningWinger was a wonderful novel that had an unforeseen outcome. In Stand-Off, I expected the same thing. I will not spoil the novel for you by telling you the ending, but I was taken aback by how poignant and hopeful it is in comparison to how soul-crushing the first book was. What I can say is that Stand-Off is the complete opposite of Winger, yet it retains everything I loved about the first book. I don't see how Smith could do a third book, seeing as how this was Ryan Dean's last year at Pine Mountain, and that breaks my heart. I would love more from these characters.I was glad to see Annie and Seanie return. Spotted John was a trip, and in my opinion, wins the book. He reminded me quite a bit of Red in The Shawshank Redemption with how he could get his hands on anything. I even liked the Abernathy. The character development between Sam and Ryan Dean was handled very well. Their interactions were highlights for me. The dialogue assignment they do had me busting a gut... Do yourself a favor, just read it.If someone were to ask me if they could read one book without the other, I'd have to say no. To receive the full effect of Stand-Off, you most definitely need to read Winger first. You won't necessarily be lost if you skip the first book, but the second book will certainly not have the same emotional impact if you decide to skip Winger. Likewise, if you've read Winger, you really should read Stand-off. Yes, they compliment each other that well.In summation: I can't find a single negative thing to say about this book or any of its characters. It isn't as tear-inducing as its predecessor, but I think that helped in making Stand-Off its own thing. For what it lacks in sad happenings it makes up for in good times. Highly recommended.Final Judgment: Sometimes, you just need a little comedy in your life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ryan Dean West is back! By Yankee Doodle I've been waiting since the beginning of the year to read this book and I'm so happy to finally have it. After the absolutely heartbreaking end to Winger, I needed Stand Off to find out what happens with Ryan Dean! Ryan Dean is now a senior at Pine Mountain, but he is still grieving for his best friend (I miss Joey too, RD). But at the same time, Ryan Dean's attitude and sense of humor are even better than they were in Winger. I also love new characters in Stand Off, including Spotted John (who I could picture being a part of the infamous poker games of RD's junior year), and I especially loved Nico Cosentino. I just want to give Nico a big hug. He is hurting so badly after the death of his brother nearly a year earlier, and I was so glad to see him and RD eventually become friends. One of the things that I think was important to Stand Off is that, even though Joey was not physically in the story, he was still very much a part of it. He still very much influenced Ryan Dean's thoughts and actions. He was the most important person in Nico and Ryan Dean's life, and I was so happy to see the two of them eventually come together over their love for Joey, because I think that was something they both really needed. Would I recommend this book? YES!! I love this book, it is without a doubt one of the best I have read all year.
