Not only did the plot keep my attention all the way through, but also the descriptions were so vivid that I could practically smell India. I cared about the characters and kept wanting to know what choices they were going to make. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this novel won some awards.

The story is beautiful, sad and yet uplifting, it shows the strenght of the human soul. The description of India, of the different places, are an extra gift for someone ( like me ) who would love to visit those mystic places but so far didn't have the chance. I highly recommend this book.

Flanigan I have read all of Rachel Devenish Ford's books and I have really seen growth as an author and storyteller. A Traveler's Guide to Belonging offers a real sense of time and place, where we feel as if we are along for the journey. When Timothy, a very young husband and father, loses his wife and first love during childbirth, he wonders how he can go on. Through his physical journey in mystical India and his emotional travels to self-awareness, Timothy wonders if he is up to the task of fatherhood and whether he can fight through the pain to learn to love life again.Having lived in India herself, Ford (along with her husband and children) are themselves and her children have not lived the majority of their lives overseas. Their experiences in Intentional Communities in California, India and Thailand affords the author the ability to create a realistic world for Timothy, his friends and family. This was an excellent story and made me yearn for the opportunity to try living in another country.

EXCERPT: She could feel him behind her, close but not quite touching—feel the warmth of him, the raw need. “Maggie,” he said, and she nearly whimpered. “Maggie. Look at me.” She swallowed and squeezed her fingers around the key card, coiling heat spreading through her pelvis. “I can’t.” His voice, a breathy murmur, ghosted across the soft skin of her neck beneath her ear. “Why?” It wasn’t really a question. It was a challenge. “Because I’ve got no control around you,” she admitted desperately, pleadingly, every ounce of her senses firing up for him. “Tell me to leave,” he murmured to her, and she felt it then—the shadow of a touch on the side of her neck, the very whisper of his tongue. “Tell me to walk away, and I’ll never bother you again.”

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Oh MY!! I need MORE, please. By The Book Junkie Reads . . . Maggie is a BBW with a good job, all be it not what her family wants for her, but she is independent. Hard working and loves her brother to a fault. She had a crush on a very delicious, very hot, very wealthy man that she should have never dare dream of, but fate has a way of saying screw that. She took fate’s offering and it did not turn to her liking when the offering walked out on her on their second date and then showed up with another thinner blond. To top all that, Mr. Delicious_Hot_Wealthy is one of her brother friends.Declan. What can I say? This man is delicious from the word go. He makes alpha male and wealthy look so good. He has a sharp mind and a keen wit. He knows what he wants but going about getting it has proved to be a bit difficult for him. Maggie has been a sweet obsession for him for years, yet she does not know this. Wilder make you want to dive in, pull up a comfy-n-cozy chair, nice warm blanket, and some quite to enjoy the offerings.I started just wanting to get a quick feel of the first chapter but was drawn in and done in under two hours. I so need MORE!!! When will it come?Alexa Wilder has delivered another five star read for me. I love the way she makes things work for the BBW, feisty, spunky, good hearted, insanely sweet and well rounded. She lets the family she loves pick and poke but she makes it through. There is something with the fact that Maggie knew who she was and what she wanted to be. She did not let the money of her family suede her any other way.Alexa Wilder has been a sucker for romance since she found her first Harlequin at a hospital rummage sale when she was thirteen. While she loves all forms of the written word (so much that she occasionally gets caught reading the cereal box at breakfast), love stories have always been her favorite.

By Amazon Customer I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.I will start by saying that this book grabbed my attention from the start and I didn't move until I hit the end. The storyline felt fresh, the characters were engaging, in a nutshell, I was completely engrossed.Maggie comes from a wealthy family. She doesnt fit their mold. She doesnt even try. She is a curvy beauty who is determined to make her own way - without their money. Her father left when she was young - leaving her with trust issues with all men except for her brother. Buy she has been crushing on Declan since she was a teenager. Declan, hot and sexy, one of the wealthy, a lawyer, and a man who has wanted Maggie for years. Both of them have insecurities. Maggie is sure Declan can't be serious about her - when they finally did go out, they made it through 1 1/2 dates when Declan wad an emergency and had to leave. Then the society pages has pix of him with somone else. Declan believes that Maggie wasnt serious, because he saw her with another man soon after their aborted 2nd date.Throw in a cousins wedding, a snobby aunt who is teying to set her up, a brother who rescues her from said aunt, an arrogant jerk of a doctor, missing drugs and the sudden urgent need for a lawyer and I was hooked.I loved both Maggie and Declan. Their insecurities made them real. I am in awe of writers who can, in just a few short pages have my complete attention with great writing, H/h that are relatable, secondary characters that fit the story, and a story that i can picture in my mind.Im not a fan on all of the series books with cliffhangers that require me to be patient while waiting for the "To be continued" part. First of all, I have no patience. Secondly, I read so many books, that I have been know to forget to remember that I am waiting for the next part of the story. Finally, Its painful (in an emotional I can't wait that long way) to wait when I have become emotionally invested in a book and it stops at a really good part. Anticipation does not work well with me. Like right now! Im trying to finish this review - but all that is in my mind is tht I want the next book and I want it now!!!Great writing, great story, awesome characters - sexy, curvy and hot. Its a quick read, but captivating. It is entertaining. And if a book entertains me, then it is a winner. Loved it - well loved everything except the expectation that I can wait patiently without pouting.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Calling All Animal Lovers! By R. Demerjian My daughter is a book worm to the core. I found this at a book fair at the school I work at and knew it was right up her alley. The story didn't fail. I highly recommend this to any parent trying to get their child (between 6 and 9 years old) into deeper, more complex stories than let's say The Berenstain Bears but not so deep that the plot confuses. This is a great bridge book for young people. It is very well written- don't let the cover deceive you. Holly Webb's books look very formulaic (judging by the covers and titles) but if they are all as good as Harry, we're in. There are moments that will have you and your kid crying out of sadness (Harry is illustrated to be absolutely adorable and some of the lines where he is thinking are heartbreaking) and moments that will have you crying out of joy (his happy face is a sight for sore eyes after all the trouble he goes through). The story flows well and, while the suspense gets to be a bit like a soap opera near the end, the pay off is worth it. If you or your child are animal lovers it will be an even more enjoyable experience. To top it off, if you do like this book (and if the others are just as good) you've opened up a whole new genre for your child to sink his/ her bookwormish teeth into. The plot in a nutshell: Harry is left at a dog shelter by an owner who can't keep him because the family is moving away and the new home will not be suitable for him. Harry meets a little girl who volunteers at the shelter and, amidst some very sad and lonely moments, a friendship begins.

The Concept of Mind is a 1949 book by philosopher Gilbert Ryle that has been seen as a founding document in the philosophy of mind, which received professional recognition as a distinct and important branch of philosophy only after 1950.The Concept of Mind argues that "mind" is "a philosophical illusion hailing chiefly from Descartes and sustained by logical errors and 'category mistakes' which have become habitual." The work has been cited as having "put the final nail in the coffin of Cartesian dualism."

The Concept of Mind, by Gilbert Ryle

From the Inside Flap This now-classic work challenges what Ryle calls philosophy's "official theory," the Cartesians "myth" of the separation of mind and matter. Ryle's linguistic analysis remaps the conceptual geography of mind, not so much solving traditional philosophical problems as dissolving them into the mere consequences of misguided language. His plain language and esstentially simple purpose place him in the traditioin of Locke, Berkeley, Mill, and Russell.

About the Author Gilbert Ryle (1900-1976) was the Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Oxford University from 1947-1971.

55 of 61 people found the following review helpful. A Matter of Mind By Peter Reeve "The Concept of Mind" is one of the essential works of philosophy and one of the great books of the twentieth century. Western thought took a horrendous wrong turn with Cartesian dualism and it was not until Ryle's book in 1949 that we got back on track. Or at least should have done, for the idea that we are two separate entities - mind and body - still pervades, and muddies, our thinking, whether philosophical, theological or everyday. Some of Ryle's followers have extended his ideas to the point of distortion, and would have us believe that mind and consciousness actually do not exist. Don't let such behaviorist extremism put you off. Ryle's feet were always more firmly on the ground. He defines the concept of mind, not invalidates it.He has a lively, readable style (of how many philosophers can you say that?) and although a lot of his ideas do not have the novelty that they would have had half a century ago, this is still the best book with which to begin an investigation of the nature of mind and consciousness.

Gardner In a sense, this book is a mirror to the problems covered in Wittgenstein's "Philosophical Investigations"--albeit with tighter arguments and far less meandering than Wittgenstein's groundbreaking work (this was published three years before Wittgenstein's posthumous PI). Both men were dedicated to freeing philosophy from what Ryle terms "category errors"--misapplications of the ordinary referential scope of a given term ("mind" as a concept which must necessarily oppose "substance" for instance--this duality forces us to ascribe and essentialize qualities to the incorporeal along the same lines as that of substance, by giving it attributes on the linguistic model of physical objects) These misapplications have led philosophers into vast problems which, by their very nature as linguistic misuses, are unsolvable (but not dis-solvable). Parts of it will provoke cries of "behaviorism!", but Ryle included a chapter near the end distancing his stance from Skinner et al. (how well he manages in this is debatable!) Brilliant, straightforward, and elegant, this is one the best works of 20th-century philosophy.

A Classic of Philosophy of Mind By JNeeley@mail.utexas.edu Gilbert Ryle's classic philosophical work, The Concept of Mind, is now best remembered for the least philosophical part of it, the rhetorical dubbing of Descartes mind/body dualism as the "dogma of the ghost in the machine." Ryle's own particular brand of philosophical behaviorism hasn't weathered all that well, and so this book's surviving interest is primarily as a negative work. Nevertheless, the book is interesting as a crucible for Cartesians and those interested in the philosophical merits of the Cartesain theory of mind.Ryle's book is chauk full of arguments, long ones, short ones, simple ones, subtle ones, with a particular predominance of infinite regresses. Even if you think, as I do, that many of these arguments are misguided, you will still be put through a variety of mental gymnastics as you try to diagnose the various faults they hide. One note of caution, because many of Ryle's arguments are of the ordinary language variety, his linguistic distance from us (the book is over 50 years old, and British to boot) does hinder understanding. It was not always clear to me whether Ryle was misusing a word, or whether its use is different for us than it was for him.

An exploration of an overlooked consequence of the obesity crisis: unsatisfying and dysfunctional love lives

With 2 out of every 3 Americans overweight or obese, scientists are studying how excess fat changes physical and mental health, demographers are calculating how it's shortening life spans, and economists are debating the impact it has on America's productivity and global competitiveness. But how weight affects intimacy and sexuality is barely discussed.

Yet, it's a question of high importance for the tens of millions of Americans who are overweight or obese and having difficulty sexually and romantically. It is changing and complicating the mating game and married life alike, stunting the ability of young people to find happiness and tipping some heavy, but otherwise happy, couples into divorce. For many, a larger body has meant a more troubled mind: a decline in sexual quality, an increase in self-loathing, and a tendency to let these factors stand in the way of love.

In XL Love, Varney travels the country and tells the personal stories of men and women who are experiencing what millions of others feel every day, along with the stories of those who are in the business of helping them: physicians, researchers, scientists, psychologists, sociologists, and more. Analytic and immersive, personal and eye opening, XL Love tackles the question: How is sex changing in American as the shape of Americans changes?

Compelling Book Club Pick -- Consider Pairing XL Love with Salt Sugar Fat By Green Vista Pets At first glance, an examination of how obesity affects love and sex may seem like an unusual choice for a book club. But when Varney reveals that two out of three Americans are either obese or overweight and 6.6% of the population had a BMI over 40 between 2000 and 2010, this topic becomes not only relevant but critical. Sarah Varney, who reports on health policy for media outlets including National Public Radio, New York Times, Washington Post , and USA Today, has created a compelling exploration about how the epidemic of obesity affects and transforms the most intimate and meaningful aspects of life.XL Love begins in Jackson, Mississippi, first in a neonatal intensive care unit dedicated to keeping the newborns of mothers with diabetes and chronic hypertension alive --"the ultimate collision of fat and sex" -- and then moves to prom night, using a powerful metaphor of kudzu to illustrate how obesity has quietly invaded the population. Mississippi is the perfect place to begin this journey since nearly half of the elementary children and teens are overweight or obese. As a result, being "thick" is more accepted than in other places. The changes wrought by excess weight -- early puberty, with girls as young as 5 and 6 years old developing pubic hair and beginning their period as early as first or second grade -- occur years before they are ready mentally or emotionally. But prom night in Mississippi is only the beginning of XL Love, which covers how obesity affects online dating, first loves, marriage, and even Las Vegas. The effect of losing weight on a relationship is a particularly touching chapter. Many of the findings in XL Love are alarming, but also thought-provoking. Any book club looking for a pick that will generate conversation will not be disappointed and might consider a "cause and effect" pairing of XL Love with Michael Moss's Salt Sugar Fat.

Salas This books reads like watching one of those engrossing documentary movies - colorful, vivid, and compelling. I was thoroughly engaged and moved while reading this book all while learning so much about the topic (without feeling like I was drudging through a dry text book). In fact, it was quite the opposite. I love that this book comes at the topic of sex and obesity from multiple different ways and weaves in so many real people's life stories and experiences. Speaking of which, wow, I'm so impressed at how honest and open the people interviewed for the book were and how compassionately the author wrote about them. I wasn't sure if this was going to be a "bigger is beautiful book" or "bigger is bad" book and for me it was neither of those - it was more like an impartial presentation of the science, the psychology, the sociology, and, most importantly, the human story behind this topic. It definitely got me thinking about how my own biology (whether its weight, age, stress, etc) has been working for and/or against me over the years and its been interesting to think about how it has impacted my own thoughts, actions and relationships (sometimes without even being conscious of it). Bottom line, this is a book that I keep thinking about it even though its been a few weeks since I've finished it.

By Amazon Customer Let me start by saying what this book isn't: It isn't treacly, it isn't self-help and it isn't prurient. Sarah Varney nails the science on the obesity epidemic and its medical, public health and public policy implications, and she takes the story into a new direction with personal narratives. It is extremely well written and researched, and it belongs on the same reading lists as "Fast Food Nation."

Kinda Like Brothers, by Coe Booth

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Life is a very complicated affair if you happen to be 11-year-old Jarrett of Newark, New Jersey. He is asthmatic and about to fail summer school. His mother takes in almost any foster child, including kids with special needs. The last straw is the arrival of two siblings, the developmentally challenged toddler, Treasure, and her tall, athletic 12-year-old brother, Kevon, who will be sharing Jarrett's room. Jarrett has had to share his mother's attention for as long as he can remember but never before had to give up his personal space. The friction between Jarrett and Kevon gains momentum when Kevon makes the basketball team and shows off for the girls, including Caprice, the girl Jarrett has a crush on. The protagonist is bound to get even at all costs. He spies on Kevon and his social worker, digging for any way to humiliate his foster brother without thought to the consequences. A pattern of mutual cruelties is set into motion which rapidly escalates on both sides. Plot and characters are realistic and engaging. References to farts, foot odor, and disgusting toenails abound. Gross-out humor aside, this is a solid story about dealing with problems that threaten to overwhelm and the importance putting one's own personal pain aside to understand the pain of another.—Kathy Cherniavsky, Ridgefield Library, CT

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A poignant look at inner city life. By Reviews Coming at YA Booth reminds me a lot of Walter Dean Myers. Dealing with similar inner city lives of young adults, Booth characterizes 11 year-old Jarrett as a young African-American boy struggling with school and getting enough attention from his mom who has decided to open their home to foster children. Worried about repeating the sixth grade, Jarrett now has to room with Kevon, a 12-year-old foster child. Soon, Jarrett realizes that Kevon's distance comes from a long history of sadness. Coping with Kevon's presence, Jarrett turns his attention to making horror movie trailers with his friend.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very Diverse By Mindjacked I liked this book on a few different levels. I liked it because it showed diversity of several different types, and we desperately need more of this in children and young adult books today. I also liked the break through of the mental health stigma, people, especially children and young adults need to not only know it is out there, but it is OK and there is help not only for the person suffering from it but the family as well, no one should suffer in silence. And the biggest reason I choose to pick this book was Jarrett and his learning problems. You see Jarrett and I are a lot alike. I spent most of my school years struggling and playing catch up, I didn't even really start to read until half way through my second grade year when everyone figured out I was really good at faking it, until test time that is. This book is a awesome read for middle grade and young adult guys, however girls will surely appreciate the finer point as well, but I think this book will especially appeal to reluctant readers of all ages or genders, it is that good!Jarrett's mom is a foster mother for babies, but when a special case comes her way she can't turn down the babies older brother as well, after all it is only for a few days until they find another foster home, so Jarrett is told. Now Jarrett is stuck sharing his room, friends, and life with the older, cooler, smarter Kevon and it has been a lot more than a few days. Will they ever learn to get along or will Kevon's dad come to get him and his little sister Treasure first? This really is a awesome book and if you get it through kindle you can pick up the audible.com version as well discounted and I must say the narrator John Clarence Stewart Does a outstanding job, well worth it, he was awesome!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful story that is beat down a little by characters who HATE each other By Xander @ ForeverBookish Jarrett’s mom takes in foster babies. He is used to getting less attention than the foster babies and life is pretty predictable. Until Kevon comes. Kevon is a foster child a little older than Jarrett who gets taken in to be fostered. Jarrett and Kevon immediately dislike each other. But Jarrett doesn’t trust Kevon—he knows something is off. A nice, light read that touches on hate, this is a story about two kids who could just as well be brothers. My thoughts:This book was enjoyable. I had some problems with it, but overall I found it to be an easy and fast read. Ok, these kids HATE each other. I could not STAND it. Jarrett does this, so Kevon does that and Jarrett gets him back and it’s not my fault it’s his fault. AAAAAAAHHHHHHH. “Why does he have to share a room with me?” Me: “Why are you so selfish? He came from bad circumstances and ALL HE DOES IS SHARE A ROOM WITH YOU. Oh. My. Gosh” *end rant* Other than the aforementioned craziness, I did actually think this book was great. It was a nice story, and I loved how real it was. You connected with the characters (even if two of them could be jerks) and I really liked Kevon’s sister, Treasure. she is kinda sorta really cute. Even though I had problems with the characters, I understand that the book was ABOUT trying to be friends and kinda being like brothers. The back is why I picked this up at BEA: “Kinda Like Friends. Kinda Like Enemies. Kinda Like Brothers.” I just love that. So, this book did well emphasizing how people can be ignorant and could care less about someone else, and it shows you that if you just dislike someone just because, it will lead you nowhere. The book conveyed its message.XanderStars:8.25 out of 10 Xander

Gives Parents a Guide to Help their Teens with today's High Tech Crisis By Todd Basche Some books speak to you as if the author is right next to you, telling you the story. Joani Geltman’s A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens, provides the reader with genuine, intelligent, useful information presented in such an accessible format it’s like having Joani with you, coaching you along. And while the author’s style is warm, smart and humorous, she also understands the critical nature of todays’ issues facing both parents and teens, and she takes it all seriously while explaining what kids are actually experiencing that may drive them to make dangerous choices, and what you as a parent can actually do to protect your teen. She offers parents the actual words yto use with kids,, a “script” of sorts, from the heart. This book is a gem, a must read for today’s parents who are faced with critical issues no one could have predicted for this century..

Straight, common-sense talk about discipline By BostonWriter I've never been one to read parenting how-to books (mothering a large family has been more about on-the-job training). But when I heard Joani Geltman speak at my local bookstore, I knew this would be the exception. Practical, no-nonsense, funny and wise, she's like the friend you wish you could meet for coffee every week. Her short entries about 70+ hot button areas of parenting teens (especially including smartphones) are easily digestible, and felt to me like a comforting second opinion on my gut feeling. I keep it on the nightstand. And I don't mind if the kids see it.

Such a valuable book even though my kids are still in elementary school By Lisa Mom of 2 While my kids are a few years away from the teen years, I want to know about what issues parents are facing with their teenagers now, considering how much things have changed since I was a teen in the 90's.Seriously - Facebook, smartphones, and even digital cameras didn't exist when I was a teen. Sheesh, I remember when CDs, caller ID, and giant cell phones first came out! I didn't even use the Internet until I was in college.Back then it was harder to share the daily details of your life with anyone else but those closest to you. But so much is different now, though of course, many of the core issues remain (drugs, sex, money) but in new ways.A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens: Talking to Your Kids About Sexting, Drinking, Drugs, and Other Things That Freak You Out is a valuable guidebook filled with humor and advice that all parents should read, regardless of how old their kids are. It's organized into 10 sections and covers 80 topics from smartphones to new social media sites to teens talking back to "the bad seed friend" and so much more. This is an ideal guidebook for busy parents (who isn't?) as each chapter is cleverly titled by the issue, so it's not a book that needs to be read cover-to-cover...it can be easily opened up to whatever issue you're facing! And I love how simply she organizes each chapter: First she breaks down each issue by starting with "Here's the Problem," then "Why It's a Problem" (to help you understand what's going on), and ending with "Here's the Solution."As a mom I have found this book amazingly eye-opening and helpful to prepare for that stage in our lives. Like chapter 63: "Icky New Social Networking Sites...Beware!" Did you know about websites like Omegle, com, Chatroulette, com, or Ask.fm? Imagine your teen talking (& possibly more) via their computer with complete strangers or anonymously criticizing or bullying someone. It's amazing what teen-targeting sites exist out there!I recommend A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens as it's full of so much down-to-earth advice for all parents, and is so informative for parents with pre-teens to help them better prepare for and understand their child's development.

Many people are suffering from OCPD, and it is negatively affecting their marriage, their relationships, their children and their lives. Obsessive Compulsive Personality disorder is a condition of negative perfectionism. It is a desire and a need for orderliness, control, strict guidelines, and clear procedures. OCPD generally is handed down through the family and is held to be a family value which provides stability and survival. However, the obsessiveness and compulsiveness that is characteristic of OCPD can cause great strain in relationships and reduce the quality of life for the sufferer.

In this book, I seek to challenge the core negative personality traits and needs of the OCPD sufferer. I challenge them to turn off their autopilot and try to look at the world through a different lens. I realize that it is quite difficult for a person with OCPD to challenge their own thoughts and the thoughts of their family members in order to search for greater freedom. I wish for them to slowly release their need to control and perfect everything in their life, to take a step back and to breathe.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Well-Thought Out 7-Day Progression to Address Multiple Aspects of OCPD and Detrimental Ultra-Perfectionism By a friend of Jesus Ms. J.B. Snow has a real talent for presenting helpful guidance and sound recommendations in easily manageable (mentally digestible) length regarding the overcoming of OCPD and/or ultra-perfectionistic tendencies. In this ebook, Ms. Snow sets forth a different challenge per day over a seven day period to counter any long-ingrained thoughts or actions which undermine healthy relations of every type. Her central idea is that of MINDFULNESS, wherein an OCPD person sets their Intention at the start of each day to deliberately observe their own thoughts and actions, and to alter those thoughts and actions as increased awareness of the consequences of their actions would naturally dictate. She appropriately refers to this procedure as ‘turning off auto pilot’, setting the stage for a fully-conscious, choice-empowered life, wherein the OCPD person acquires the ability, through practice, to do, say, and act differently (more beneficially, to all parties involved) depending upon the needs of the moment. Ms. Snow makes it clear that adopting this 7-day challenge will require considerable effort, but the outcome will be more than worth it. She is a great encourager to try the initially uncomfortable, but life-freeing exercises, because she shares her own personal familiarity and struggle with and overcoming of OCPD tendencies, herself. A helpful little digest, to be sure. Thank you, Ms. Snow, for sharing such valuable knowledge you have gleaned through direct experience. Sincerely, Mack W. Ethridge, President, New Frontier Health Research, Inc., and author of The One Master Guide to OCPD Deliverance, available at Amazon.com.
