The Inventor's Secret: What Thomas Edison Told Henry Ford, by Suzanne Slade

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Emphasizing the power of perseverance, this cheery picture book alternates between the lives of two inventors, beginning with Thomas Edison, who was 16 years Henry Ford's senior. Many of Edison's major inventions are touched on, and young Ford is portrayed as curious as to the secret of Edison's success. Ford continues to work on developing engines and designing cars and finally seizes the opportunity to meet Edison in person. The two go over Ford's designs, and Edison urges the younger man to "keep at it!" With that, Ford discovers that "he'd known Thomas's secret all along!"—a realization illustrated with a light bulb over Ford's head. The rest of the story focuses on Ford's work on creating a car for all Americans, which resulted in the Model-T. Fanciful watercolor sketches depict Edison and Ford dreaming, inventing, and working, with a variety of expressions on their faces. The drawings are framed on the page, providing an old-fashioned feel. Inset images provide details and information on their inventions. The front and endpapers are filled with sketches of various light bulbs and gears in muted brown tones. The early lives and activities of these men are covered briefly. The factual text emphasizes how both started as dreamers who took action. Back matter includes a section on Edison and Ford's friendship, more material about the inventions, author and illustrator notes, and extensive source notes with citations for dialogue and other facts. VERDICT A suitable addition for those seeking biographies of inventors.—Tamara Saarinen, Pierce County Library, WA

Review What would a renowned, established inventor have to say to a hopeful young tinkerer?Slade precedes her description of a historical meeting with interwoven accounts: one of Thomas, a disaster-prone experimenter who parlays an early interest in gadgets and electricity into a pen that produces multiple copies, a phonograph, and hundreds of other popular innovations; the other of Henry, born 16 years later, whose yen to produce a practical, inexpensive motor car encounters obstacle after frustrating obstacle. At last, hoping for insight into Edison's success, Henry buttonholes the great inventor at an 1896 dinner. The two instantly fall into a technical discussion, climaxed by the excited Edison's "Keep at it!" . . . the author and illustrator close with fuller notes on major Edison-ian inventions, the development of the Model T, and particularly the lifelong friendship that the encounter kindled between these two giants of industrial technology. . . .-Kirkus Reviews"What's his secret?" That's the question dogging Henry Ford as he watches Thomas Edison's phonograph and incandescent bulb take off, while his own attempts to create steam and gas engines sputter. Slade shifts between the developing careers of both men until, while discussing engines with Edison at a dinner in 1896, Ford gets his answer: "Keep at it!" Edison shouts encouragingly. Reinhardt's mixed-media artwork includes several lighthearted moments (parallel scenes featuring Edison and Ford as children highlight the explosive results of early failed experiments). Extensive endnotes discuss Slade's and Reinhardt's processes and several of the inventions mentioned, along with a time line and source notes. It's a rewarding look at the importance of persistence, as well as the friendship that developed between these prominent inventors. -Publishers WeeklyEmphasizing the power of perseverance, this cheery picture book alternates between the lives of two inventors, beginning with Thomas Edison, who was 16 years Henry Ford’s senior. Many of Edison’s major inventions are touched on, and young Ford is portrayed as curious as to the secret of Edison’s success. Ford continues to work on developing engines and designing cars and finally seizes the opportunity to meet Edison in person. The two go over Ford’s designs, and Edison urges the younger man to “keep at it!” With that, Ford discovers that “he’d known Thomas’s secret all along!”—a realization illustrated with a light bulb over Ford’s head. The rest of the story focuses on Ford’s work on creating a car for all Americans, which resulted in the Model-T. VERDICT A suitable addition for those seeking biographies of inventors.-School Library JournalThis dual picture-book biography of how Thomas Edison inspired Henry Ford succeeds in showing the emotional side of the life of an inventor: success requires more than just one or two—or even two dozen—attempts. Reinhardt’s soft, amiable watercolor, ink, and colored-pencil artwork provides a lot of visual detail about both Edison’s and Ford’s passions, while Slade’s text explains each man’s inspiration and the way his inventions fundamentally changed the world. Ample source notes and a comprehensive dual time line help explain some of Slade and Reinhardt’s depictions of Ford and Edison, and photo-illustrated notes about each inventor’s most memorable creations provide substantial information to get kids started on research projects. While there are abundant compilations for kids about inventions and inventors, Slade and Reinhardt keep the focus solidly on the human element of frustration, persistence, and the power of a mentor. It’s an unusual angle and well executed, which makes it a good fit for STEM-oriented programs as well as storytimes about the benefit of good friendships.-Booklist

The author reveals how Edison and Ford both spent a lot of time "trying out" various models of their inventions. This is an important lesson for our students to learn--change/improvement/innovation takes time. AND another lesson implied in the book is that inventors sometimes need encouragement from each other. In the book, Ford, looking for advice from Edison, finally gets a chance to talk to him about his plans for a motor car and Edison exclaims, "Keep at it!" That's his advice--and so Ford does. This could be read aloud in 2nd-4th grades as a way to launch a science or integrated ELA/Science unit of study focused on inventions or on the daily practices of scientists/inventors. Prompts for writing in response might be, "What is one of the main ideas in this book?" and "Why is this main idea important to people today?"BTW - It's a long picture book. Worthy of reading aloud more than once and then placing in the classroom library for independent or shared reading.Suzanne Slade is a "go to" author for nonfiction to include in your classroom library and to read aloud to students.

By Susan Roberts This delightful story starts when Thomas and Henry were curious boys who spent most of their time running experiments—and getting into trouble! This book is filled with history nuggets and an afterward sharing Thomas and Henry’s special friendship, how the author came to write the book, and the challenges the illustrator had to accurately illustrate the book. It also includes snippets of information on several inventions of both Thomas and Henry. A great introduction to two twentieth century men who changed the world. It was awarded the NSTA 2016 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12.Susan Roberts, Book ReviewerBooks4theCuriousChild.com

THE INVENTOR’S SECRET: WHAT THOMAS EDISON TOLD HENRY FORD is a book about curious and imaginative creators I would have cherished. The opening immediately draws one in with wonderful language and the enticing lure of a secret. Author Suzanne Slade begins the story focusing on the younger years of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford (16 years younger than Edison). The reader observes the thoughts and experiences of Thomas and Henry through Jennifer Black Reinhardt’s rich and detailed watercolor and ink illustrations. As Henry grows up and keeps hearing about Thomas’ inventions, he is beyond curious and wants to know how they work. I love how Slade crafts their first time meeting in person over several pages. This meeting where the secret is shared changes both of their lives forever and a 30-year friendship forms. Beyond the skillful story and inspired illustrations, all of the information shared at the end of the book is a phenomenal bonus. From the joint timelines of each man’s life and an explanation of their friendship to details about their inventions and informative source notes, this book is a wonderful addition to any personal collection (it is now in mine) as well as being a great gift (I got one for my sister’s third grade classroom too).It has been awarded the National Science Teachers Association’s 2016 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12.

I fell in love with Liam only to be left shattered into a million pieces. Again. The idea of being without him cripples me but the reality is, he's gone.

He doesn't understand, and I can't make him.

If only he'd see the conviction behind my words - then Liam would still be here.

By mjlovestoread *this review contains a big spoiler...don't read if you haven't already read Consolation...just know this one is ah-mazing!*The anticipation for this book was overwhelming for me. I fell in love with Natalie's story in Consolation and craved the conclusion I know I would find in Conviction. To say I was overwhelmed by the beauty of this book is an understatement. Corinne Michaels has once again proven she is an incredible writer who delivers exactly what the readers desire. The author is so well versed in the military life that her ability to convey the absolute joy and horror Natalie faced at finding her presumed-dead husband, Aaron, alive felt completely viable. This could definitely happen in real life and I found myself completely consumed with how Natalie could possibly be able to reconcile her life now that she had fallen in love with Aaron's best friend Liam Dempsey. This book covers the agonizing journey she must now take in trying to come to the right decision that is both right for her heart and for her daughter. But it never felt overdone or redundant or superficial. It is a powerful story of one woman's fight to get the happy ending she both craves and deserves. What I loved the most was Natalie's drive. Never does she back down or run away like so many other heroines I've read before in her situation. This woman knows what she wants and is not afraid to make it happen. Not wanting to hurt either Aaron or Liam, we are witness to the compassion and sensibility Natalie encompasses in order to realize the dreams she so desperately doesn't want to give up. Watching her juggle a myriad of conflicting emotions, wanting to do right by everyone involved and not losing herself or her beloved daughter, Aara, in the process was quite the feat. To the Author's credit, this rollercoaster of heartbreak was handled with true grace. I loved the way the story progressed and the heroine's ability to handle such conflict when she didn't know at times where to turn. The secondary characters are the perfect compliment to this book. The love each of the guys have for Natalie, Liam and Aaron, warmed my heart. The loyalty that is on constant display was a joy to read. Reanell is the friend we all wish we had to lean on. And Mark stands out for me as the big brother we all want by our side when times get tough.I would be remiss if I didn't at least express my feelings about Liam. There aren't enough words for this man. This selfless, caring, compassion and sexy man who would move mountains and step aside if it would make Natalie happy. How he loves Aara as his own, how conflicted he is yet prays he'll get the life he never knew he wanted but is now desperate for. I will only say that my passion for him grew by leaps and bounds in this book and he is definitely a book boyfriend I won't soon forget. The author's writing has been taken to a higher level with this series. Her capacity to convey tender moments, passionate nights, all-consuming heartbreak and even lighthearted exchanges all in one story is not an easy task. But she wrote a beautiful tale that at times took my breath away. I didn't want it to end simply because I was enjoying it that much, despite all the pain.I will only say this: I strongly suggest you read Consolation first, then dive right into Conviction. This is a series that happily grabbed onto my heart and didn't let go until that very last page was read. And even now, I'm not quite sure I'm over this story. A reread is definitely in order! You will devour it just like I did. Don't say I didn't warn you because yeah, it's that good.An ARC was graciously provided by the author.

By Alison Maxwell Spoiler free review!I don't think in all of my years as a reader have I ever NEEDED a second book to be released as much as I needed Conviction. Consolation's ending stayed with me for weeks. I often found myself thinking "how will Corinne Michaels ever resolve the feelings and emotions I was left with when those final words were spoken in Consolation?"Well...let me tell you. I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this book and it did not disappoint.I always knew Natalie was a strong heroine. The way she survived the devastating reality of being a seal wife in Consolation with grace. The way she pulled herself back from the brink because she had to for her daughter and the way she loved Liam was nothing short of spectacular.I had no way of knowing how this book would play out and the fact that I still kept coming back to Consolation and worrying and wondering spoke volumes for this spectacular author and the characters I had grown to love. This was an amazing conclusion to Natalie's story. Corinne Michaels did it again!I will forever love Liam!!!

18 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Amazing! By Gloria Herrera The wait is over! Natalie is now confronted with the fact that Aaron has survived! After a year of mourning him, burying him, and finding out he cheated on her, she now must face the fact that he is alive. Her dreams of starting a new life with Liam are shattered as she watches Liam's reaction and lack of eye contact. This now is the journey of Natalie, Liam and Aaron as they must find out what love, loyalty and commitment really means. For Aaron, coming back from a year of being tortured and hoping he can someday come back to Natalie, it is a rude awakening. He not only must face the fact that his hopes are shredded, but that his past mistakes have consequences.Corinne Michaels has given us here a sober, unflinching conclusion to these characters' hopes and dreams. She intimately describes the struggle our military wives go through with each deployment. Their sacrifice is more than risking a loved one's life. It is their daily struggle to survive the unknown... will he be safe; will he make it back; will he come back changed from what he has had to face? The strength of our fighting men depends on the conviction their partners have in keeping a stable home for them to come back to. The support and undying love of these families becomes the core that keeps them stable to perform their jobs.

Evan, the billionaire inventor, and Margie, the baker, make a great couple; and thanks to knowing there would be a happy ending, my emotions while reading were constantly changing, often doubting that the two would overcome the things that were keeping them apart. I loved journeying with them from Dare Valley to Paris. In Greek mythology Artemis is not the goddess of wisdom as stated in the series. She is goddess of the hunt, chastity, among other things. Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom.

I wanted it to go on forever. Loved all the supporting characters. I loved the small town flavor of Dare Valley. Paris and Andre & Belle made you want to book a flight to see the beauty and its grandeur, and its bakeries too. Ava Miles is my new go-to feel good author. This my first book by her. Thank you

By FreeLanceLinda Most people hear well, not everybody listens well...Hair stylist, Stacie Harmon though, has turned listening into an art form and she's not afraid to share "the dirt" dozens of men have spilled at her shampoo bowl over the years! A great read & real eye opener for women--the only thing missing in this book is the inclusion of a hair cut coupon for men so Stacie can increase her research & continue to explain to us why "Men are from Mars...!" This reader's "inquiring mind does want to know" more from this wordly author!

Imagine, if you can, a roomful of teenage boys, all familiar with the inside of a courtroom; many are gang members, many are from the roughest home environments you might conjure up from having seen some pretty horrible movies. Many of those kids have experienced years of academic failure. Their guards are up so that no teacher, no test will be allowed to expose their shortcomings. They are accustomed to failing and to public embarrassment—both elements of their dislike of school. And then comes Friday: Poem Day—a tradition that has become a centerpiece for kids who are trying to find ways to express their feelings about the harshness and confusion of their lives. These teenagers, given time with Mary Sklar and her special brand of imparting to them a belief in themselves and encouraging them to dare anything to succeed, found themselves in their rooms late into the evening on Thursday memorizing poems by such authors as Maya Angelou and John Donne. They then recite these poems to a classful of other teenage boys—not a wisecrack or snort is heard—and the prize they receive is a miniature Snickers bar. After a student successfully recites a poem, he comes to the front of the classroom and drops rolls of pennies into a donation bucket—each year a different charity is selected related to education. He earns the pennies by choosing one of the longer poems on the list of options. Even though the pennies come from a fund established by the teacher, the boy feels so proud to be able, by his own effort, to help kids who are less fortunate than he with a charitable contribution. His name is added to the list of humanitarians on the classroom door. Other students congratulate him, often accompanied by applause. The most common statement heard from students as they drop their pennies into the bucket is “Oh Miss, I wish my mother could see me. She’d be so proud.” Apathy, not common in room 101, is totally absent on Friday. How Do We Reach Those Kids is the story of a remarkable teacher and her amazing journey in a juvenile detention center. Her techniques and experiences will resonate with teachers, parents, grandparents, and anyone who cares about the future of our children and education in this country. Every kid needs a Mary Sklar in his or her corner.

How Do We Reach Those Kids: Creating Places of Belonging Where Everyone Learns and Thrives, by Mary Sklar

About the Author Mary Duerksen Sklar has lived on two continents and has taught and worked with educators and students on three. Having absorbed a broad range of teaching approaches and experiences she returned to the US over a decade ago eager for a challenge. She found it at a juvenile detention facility near Denver, Colorado. Teaching social studies to teenagers ordered by the court to live and attend school in the facility put her theories to their most demanding tests. The impact of her reaching techniques has resulted in countless students showing greater interest in learning and has reduced the numbers of young people who are determined to disrupt classrooms and interrupt or end their own education. Her unique strengths and talents are influenced by her Midwestern upbringing. Her father was dean of the School of Fine Arts at Wichita State University, and her mother opened their home to frequent guests that included educators, musicians, and cultural leaders. Conversation was rich and stimulating. Her solid grounding in traditional values gives her the confidence and resourcefulness to work creatively with a juvenile prison population. The three Rs in Mary Sklar’s classroom—relationship, relevance, and respect—work wonders with kids whose lives are fraught with loss, chaos, and failure.

By Amazon Customer This is the most inspirational book for teachers, parents, students and any concerned people that will give you an insight to the struggles of these young adults that are troubled with the law and their social and family lives. The author of this book has taught these students for many years and has taught them how to respect themselves and each other. As you will read some of the stories of success of some of her students it will bring some tears to see that there is hope for some of them.DH

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The secret to breaking down walls By Gail H. This book grabbed me from the first paragraph and I could not put it down. It is obvious from the beginning the genuine care and concern she has for each student. Mary Sklar has unveiled the harsh reality of these young adults daily lives and illuminates the secret to breaking down their walls that others have long since given up on. She opens the door and welcomes you into classroom 101 and shares numerous ways to teach, connect, encourage, build up, instill worth and value as well as make them feel respected and important. Mary's classroom is relevant to their outside lives. The key is respect. The goal is relationship and engagement. Her warmth for every student and her passion for causing them to learn flows through these pages with practical tools and solutions to equip fractured lives with every opportunity to experience significance and success. Mary instills fundamentals of resilience, focus, and making wise choices in order for them to respond differently and act responsibility. No kid wants to fail, be criticized or embarrassed and therefore she structures her class and her responses so this will not be the outcome. This book is truly inspiring and educationally brilliant as you learn from the master how to illuminate what is possible in getting her students to want more out of life. They know that "Miss" as they so respectfully call her believes in them. Mary has a unique way of taking roll call that keeps them engaged from the beginning of class and then continues to provide numerous means for opportunities to talk about what they need to share. Mary's classroom has touched lives and permanently influenced souls. This book will produce restless and thoughtful readers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This was a fantastic book. I hadn't read any of the others ... By Sherry I was given a ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review. This was a fantastic book. I hadn't read any of the others in this series but felt this was fine as a standalone except now that I read this one I want to read them all.Becca and Andrew get a second chance at a relationship and they make a perfect couple. A very nice story of them falling in love. I didn't feel it was rushed at all and was perfect. It was a quick read because the words flowed so great, I just couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading more by this author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this series is one of my highly recommended reads, so if anything By Karen's Book Haven If you don’t already know, this series is one of my highly recommended reads, so if anything, this book was going to be judged pretty harshly to make sure it’s still worthy of my recommendation. I’m super pumped to say, it does.I was laughing from the first paragraph and reminded as to why I love this series. I have been hanging for Becca’s story since the very first book More Than Exes. She’s messed up, bouncing from rock bottom to rock bottom. Right from the first paragraph, I was back in Becca’s pain. They were each other’s rebound but sparks still fly via a chance meeting. Andrew sees her at yet another low point of her life and still wants to be with her. Expectations of her parents sees Becca offering Andrew a unique way to avoid spending Christmas alone while benefitting her. Andrew is her perfect matching but he just needs to see it for himself. This series is just heaven to me. I get lost in the warm and fuzzies, the drama and the high moments. I loved how the main players from the other books reappear and they have all moved forward. Like I said, warm and fuzzies. The flow, the pace, the hotness are all reaching the spot for me. My only wish, now that I’ve finished the book and writing this review, the desperation. The horrible lows of Becca – I wish they were explored more but I can see why the author might not have wanted to take the story down that track. To me, had that been done, it would have made Becca’s accomplishments that much more powerful. This is probably the first book in the series that you might have to read the others to know what’s going on. The leads of this book were secondary characters in the other books and to learn why they are here, you are better off to read the other books. As always, I’m chomping for the next instalment.I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest opinion. This did not influence my opinion in any way shape or form.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Becca and Andrew forever! By readingteeners Elizabeth Briggs' Chasing the Dream series is always full of surprises! She gives readers what they want and I love that. This book is one for the fans of the series, those who long for the secondary characters to get their happily ever after. In this story, we see Andrew and Becca's story. This one starts in More than Comics where we get a glimpse of something happening between these two but not much concrete. When I started reading this one, I did not realize that this was about those same two people and once it clicked I was so excited. Briggs takes a moment from one story and expands it into so much more.Becca is the girl you might have hated before. She was mean and a hot mess. When we start to understand who she is and what she is like in this book, you start to realize her reactions to every situation are for a reason and it all makes sense. She was heartbroken and lost. She left behind her life's dream to build a new one but never quite gave up on what she wanted. I admired Becca's attempt to find herself. She left a destructive lifestyle and fought to put all the pieces back together. When she learns to balance her hearts desire with responsibility and smarts, she can claim the world. When Becca and Andrew run into each other again by chance, I got so excited knowing that this was the second chance they both needed, wanted, and deserved. I could not wait to learn more about Andrew as his own person and to see where he had been. These two click. They sharpen each other, encouraging one another to fight for what they want. I loved seeing them fall hard and fast. It was realistic with the ups and downs in their relationship. There were past heartaches to work through and I love how Briggs' addresses those issues.More Than Once is a fantastic addition to this series. It gives fans of this series a HEA that most of us did not know that we wanted. This book is filled with gut wrenching passion and a lust filled haze. It is definitely the hottest book in the series (well at least that I have read so far). There is emotion, depth, hope, and fight. I loved watching Becca and Andrew's story unfold and cheering them onto their dreams!

After spending 5 years listening to doctors tell us nothing but keep trying and maybe next time it will work we found Christa. It was a blessing in many ways. Not only did we learn how to eat healthy, but we ended up with the greatest gift a child. Each day I look at my beautiful boy and think of how this joy entered my life because someone took the time to give us the information necessary to conceive naturally. If you are having troubles like we did and you are tired of the same answers then try something new and you will be thankful you did.

After he is caught napping in the rain, a little green worm emerges from his left temple, and the two hit it off immediately. They have great fun together and enjoy a variety of activities-until the other apples call Mac names and say he has worms. When the name-calling continues, Will disappears, leaving only a message scratched in the dirt. Going back to his old life, Mac realizes there's a hole in him that he cannot fill. He searches everywhere for his friend, realizing that "he'd rather be a Bad Apple with Will than a sad apple without him. "A variety of insects witnesses their reunion, as does a kind yellow apple. In a final nocturnal scene, as a smiling Mac floats in the watering hole, Will reads aloud by the light of two fireflies. The cheery, cartoon illustrations are done in oils on canvas. Despite its attractive artwork and clever puns, it is more than a tad unsettling to see the worm eating through the apple's skin. Unusual friendships between a worm and another creature are better depicted in Doreen Cronin's Diary of a Worm (HarperCollins, 2003). Youngsters may fondly recall Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar, eating through one red apple, but the idea of a friend eating a hole in another friend's head is disturbing. Wormy apples really do rot.-Mary Jean Smith, formerly at Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TNα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist This story of two unlikely friends sweeps the reader along in its warm, familiar—but peculiar!—plot before delivering that all-important final lesson. Mac is a red apple and Will is a green worm. Before meeting Will, Mac did a lot of good apple things, like sharing his toys and helping the teacher, Granny Smith, pick up after art class. But Will introduces Mac to a whole new level of fun and excitement: flying kites, playing in the dirt, and, of course, reading (Will is quite the bookworm). Mac’s fellow apples, however, mock Mac for hanging out with a worm. Will nobly tunnels off and, of course, Mac searches for him. “There was a hole in Mac that he couldn’t fill.” (Spoiler: it’s the wormhole in his head.) Hemingway’s oil illustrations are rich with autumn colors, and clever bits of action and humor conjure up a world children will want to return to. Meanwhile, the message about peer pressure comes through subtly but strongly. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Connie Fletcher

Review Praise for Bad Apple"Charming . . . Social norms force Mac and Will apart; surprisingly effective, fruit-related pathos ensues before the two friends decide to buck convention and like whom they like. Who cares what anyone thinks?"—The New York Times“The story works very nicely as a gentle celebration of friendship.”—Publishers Weekly"Hemingway's story of friendship against the odds is sweet."—Kirkus Reviews"Hemingway's oil illustrations are rich with autumn colors, and clever bits of action and humor conjure up a world children will want to return to. Meanwhile, the message about peer pressure comes through subtly but strongly."—Booklist“The story works very nicely as a gentle celebration of friendship.” — Publisher's Weekly"Hemingway's story of friendship against the odds is sweet." — Kirkus Reviews

This is from my six year old son, to my wife and myself. Great work, good story, and really nice illustrations. I love the play on words with the different varieties of apples (Granny-Smith as real grandma is perfect) including some grumpy crab-apples. The story-line of meeting unlikely friends and defying labels is of course relevant to any age.The aspect of the "properness" of an apple befriending a worm might best be compared to having a little rat being a genius French chef like in Pixar's film "Ratatouille". It's absurd of course, but it's also the whole point: beauty, love and inspiration can be found in the most unlikely of places. we have only to be open to it. In any case, the reader or reviewer who over-thinks the scenario and posits that there really IS something wrong with an apple befriending a little worm obviously stopped believing in the magic of childhood a long time ago.

I can't think of any and yet this is one of the most common weapons that bullies use. Bravo for handling the issue with kind spirit and humor. While bullying is part of the book, Bad Apple is really about friendship and what it's worth to us. In a word, everything. My son read it and seems to really understand now that he's allowed to like anyone he wants to like as long as they treat him with respect. His cousin also read the book to himself one morning while visiting. He closed the book and whispered to himself "I love this book". He didn't know I heard him.A beautiful concept, beautifully done.

Roberts I simply cannot say enough good things about Bad Apple, A Tale of Friendship, written by the oh-so-talented Edward Hemingway. Hemingway is a rare children's book author, in that his wit and talent really take his work to levels not seen in children's books for many years. The story is a wonderful lesson for young readers and sets a good tone for a beginning talk about tolerance, bullying, and accepting our friends for who they are.Mac (the apple--such a clever name!) and Will are delightful characters that really come to life. You care about these characters and while I was reading, I could imagine this story and the characters on film. Finally, I have to say something about the breathtaking artwork of this book. These are not quick drawings--the artwork is done in oils and the richness and depth come shining through. When I opened the book, I literally went, "Ahhhhhhh!" I have absolutely NEVER seen such amazing artwork in a children's book--and there are such wonderful little surprises in the art. Hemingway is not only a fantastic illustrator, his clever wit adds even more dimension.I teach early childhood development and this book hits all the marks for great children's literature. In fact, I loved this book so much that I have already ordered copies of this book for this year's new literature in my university's child development labs. I know children--and they are going to love this book!Edward Hemingway is a talent we should all keep our eye on. It's fabulous (and rare) when you see this kind of amazing talent bloom. It's a completely joy from cover to cover.

Great for young folks, good for adults By Amazon Customer The books are very well done, pictures and timelines inclusive but are targetting younger readers. As an adult I must admit MOST of the content were things I did not know but thats more of a review of our schools than this book. For your 10-12 year old age group they are the best. For adults they are interesting and beautifully pictured but brief. Im glad I bought them but I wish my expectations had been set as to how short they are.

There are some maps and a timeline, a glossary and a Find Out More" section with some web sites and places to visit. My boys love the DK books. I good overview on the subject, but I would definitely combine it with other books/materials to cover the war in more depth.

Heiss DK Eyewitness books are excellent teaching tools, for anyone. This book on the American Revolution does a bang-up job, with illustrations and captions that convey the information straight into your little one's eyeballs. In addition, the book sets up the context for the Revolution, including the dawn of industry in colonial America and the trade networks that were devloping. Also includes brief information on warfare with other European powers and frontier Indians as a prelude to Revolution.Great timeline, and simply an EXCELLENT glossary, including terms like: apothecary, apprentice, artillery, barracks...typhus, Union Jack, and volunteer.Perfect for visual learners -- put this book right into their hands.

The Truth Is...Confessions and Tips from an Elementary School Teacher, by Rebecca Thomas

About the Author Rebecca Thomas taught in the public schools for twenty-eight years and found that the greatest tool she had as an educator was humor. She received awards for creative ideas she implemented in her classroom, and helped raise state math test scores by developing a teaching system that included original songs, movement, activities, and a 100 square foot math mat coordinate grid. She named this system "Academics through Music" and now uses it when she visits schools with her in-school field trips. Seeing how the U.S. schools were changing and how teachers had little to no say about what was happening, Rebecca felt she could do more good for educators, students, and parents if she left the public school system and worked to develop and share her teaching methods, and also to write a book about the sad changes that are taking place in the public schools. Rebecca lives in a small town outside of Orlando, Florida where she teaches and also writes fun educational materials that can be found on her website at www.msthomaspresents.com .

Some of the anecdotes Ms. Thomas shares in her book will make you laugh out loud, while others will touch your heart. The author clearly illustrates that teaching is not for wimps. Teaching requires resourcefulness, dedication, and creativity. Unfortunately, many talented teachers leave the profession due to the many factors Ms.Thomas shares with her readers in this captivating book. This book is a must read for anyone who is considering going into the teaching field.

It made me laugh continually and reminded me of some of the stories my mom brought home after a day of teaching elementary art. ANYONE would like this book. My 85 year old father took my copy and wouldn't give it back till he was through with it. Ms. Thomas is the Erma Bombeck of the classroom. This book doesn't disappoint in any way. Repeated readings are just as funny as the first time! Great idea for a teacher gift or anyone else on that "hard to buy for" list.
