In the midst of America’s terrifying Pacific War with Japan in 1944, a 27 year old Navy lieutenant met a pretty university coed at an informal party. They spent the next 14 evenings together, falling in love in the San Francisco Bay Area. Separated by circumstances and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, they stayed connected with love letters as he performed his duties as Barracks Officer at Naval Air Station, Alameda and she began her year as President of the Senior Class at the University of Nevada. Fully 153 of their letters are reproduced here, revealing a love aborning with poetry and passion. Enroute, the former lieutenant became a published historian. Now in his late 90s, he brings the Pacific War to life with 12 insightful essays which illustrate the background of chaos and devastation which always threatened to cut this love affair short.

A Book's Appearance is Worth Creative Effort By vaughn davis bornet One of the things that sets this exciting book apart from many others is its physical appearance. Publication was delayed nearly two months while the author and a committee came to agreement on major typefaces for each lover--and for the interpretive essays about the Pacific War written recently by the historian author. A colophon, a very brief commentary once featured at the close of leather bound books (a century and more ago), is the last page of Lovers in Wartime, 1944 to 1945. Skipping details here, its second paragraph says about typefaces: "Times was selected for familiarity; Goudy, graceful and balanced in italic, is appropriate for a female point of view; Bodoni offers contrast and is geometric and seems somehow male...." There are two different margins cover to cover, justified and not; they clarify prose produced in the present from that dating from wartime. One other thing: the cover was created from two amateur photos taken back then and pieced together by an artist to comprise one innovative picture. I hope this little revelation has been somewhat interesting. -----Vaughn Davis Bornet , the author.

By Jennifer Dear Dr. Bornet: I wanted you to know that I found Lovers in Wartime to be an extremely powerful and touching read. Page by page, working my way through your meeting, courtship, separation, wedding plans, honeymoon, aftermath, impending parenthood and beyond ... It felt like such a privilege to be permitted to experience getting to know you both through your own voices, with all your hopes and dreams, vulnerabilities and uncertainties. It was also an unexpected joy to see you each through the eyes of your parents and their letters. At times, it was unbearably soul-stirring. At other times, I laughed aloud. In all though, it was a pure pleasure to read. The human story that emerges triumphant in the book, is uplifting. The additional historical notes, and ever-present details of the shadow cast by war, were an education. Thank you for not leaving these letters in their boxes, but instead choosing to share them with the world. I have no doubt that others will be as moved and thrilled by them as I was.
