Former U.S. Attorney, Meredith Walsh, took some time off to raise her children. But the time took away everything she once trusted about herself. She s lost within the mundane confines of her children's schedules of lacrosse, soccer, Cub Scouts, and math facts. Desperate for a sliver of her former passion, and isolated in the small town her corporate husband relocated her to, she counsels herself on risking her family for the rush of a fling. But Vincent Pratt, the local chief of police, weakens Meredith s abhorrence of affairs and her dedication to her family. With him, she finds a new version of herself, one capable of contributing in her new world, and thriving in her lonely home. In spite of the fact, she s not the kind of woman who has an affair. The Devil's Playground (Faraway) (Volume 1), by Eliza Freed

About the Author Eliza Freed graduated from Rutgers University and returned to her hometown in rural South Jersey. Her mother encouraged her to take some time and find herself. After three months of searching, she began to bounce checks and her neighbors began to talk; her mother told her to find a job. She settled into Corporate America, learning systems and practices and the bureaucracy that slows them. Eliza quickly discovered her creativity and gift for storytelling as a corporate trainer and spent years perfecting her presentation skills and studying diversity. It was during that time she became an avid observer of the characters we meet and the heartaches we endure. Her years of study have taught her laughter is the key to survival, even when it's completely inappropriate. By Tina Morgan First off let me say I am totally against cheating on your spouse while your married. With that being said I can go into my review. This was actually a really good book maybe because this story was so close to actually sounding like it really could happen. Meredith was a well educated lawyer that knew what she wanted. She had the perfect man(Brad)that she knew down to a t... he wanted her, money and power. Not always in that order. And as you read this book you will see she was usually at the bottom of the totem pole. He talked her into having children. She didn't want to give up her career just yet but he told her it would be fine. 9 years and 2 kids later....Meredith meets the colonel on a field trip with their elementary aged kids. They both felt a pull towards each other after that day. I have to give her credit she tried and tried to stay away from Vince and not give in. Her marriage with Brad was dissolving but she refused to break her marriage up. She never wanted to have to drop her kids of with their father every other holiday. Brad was away on business a lot. I actually didn't like him and wished she would've just divorced him. Lol But every time she turned around there Vince was with his dazzling smile. We find out later he was into her and had some stalker tendencies. Lol. He was also married. His wife was here and there throughout the book and she seemed sweet. He confesses to Meredith that he was so concentrated on schooling and being in the law enforcement that he just went along with marrying his wife. He didn't really wake up till Meredith. So basically this book is about 2 adults that aren't happy in their marriages. They end up having an affair. They have rules. Vince always wants honesty. Meredith has a few more rules. One rule which is the most important is if she ever emails him with no subject and no content he is to delete anything they have said to each other because it means her husband has caught on to something. They see each other for awhile and she breaks it off a couple times but she needs him like air. They fell in love. The end is a cliff hanger and I can't wait to read what happens next. Let's just say she sends an email to him with nothing...... And then there's an accident.....

Fantastic duet, loved it By DonnaC The Devil’s Playground &The Lion’s Den by Eliza Freed4 stars & 4.5 stars!!!!“This was nothing but a dangerous distraction. It was the devil’s playground.”These two books are a duet and ones that I read one after the other, only taking the mandatory toilet breaks and of course feeding the husband and kids, they were that addictive. Yes, this book does contain cheating which I know is a major turn off for some readers, however, the way that Meredith’s story is delivered is sympathetic, understandable and totally consuming.“I’ve stopped time and have you all to myself, and in the moments I’m quiet, I’m trying to figure out how to never start it again.”The Devils Playground is totally told in Meredith’s point of view and brings to the forefront just how lost she feels. Having been forced to move to the suburbs by her husband, to a house that she didn’t want and an area where she knew no-one she had never felt so isolated. Once a high flying attorney Meredith’s life is now monotonous, predictable and totally orbits around the lives of her two hilarious children. Meredith’s kids are the light of her majorly dim life and if it wasn’t for them she would have given up a long time ago.Meredith’s husband, Brad, still lives the single life. He “works” all the hour’s god sends and is never ever around. Leaving the house in the early hours and rarely home before 10pm. Always attending happy hours, company dinners and a plethora of parties, leaving Meredith and the kids behind. “Work” invades his weekends and he really is a stranger in the night. I had my suspicions about Brad from the very beginning, he tried to come across as perfect and being the bread winner for the family, but when someone is so perfect, more often than not they are not, they are always hiding something.“He’d wanted me so much back then, and I’d wanted him to have me. I just hadn’t realised how much he would take.”Vince, I ADORED this man, he was the Colonel, the head of police in this little community and everyone loved him. He was the one stable person of authority that everyone relied upon and he was selfless. He helped everybody, was a volunteer for all school and community functions and was a real pillar of the community. He had a wife and family too, but in the past two years he had really been at the point of his life where he was re-evaluating everything.“He was magnificent. A souvenir I hadn’t paid for, the vacation I didn’t earn. He was stolen goods, and I never wanted to return them, but I also knew I wouldn’t do the time to keep him. The cost was too high.”When Meredith and Vincent’s paths cross the attraction is undeniable, the chemistry is palpable and the kindle literally combusted. But Meredith is a woman of morals and was adamant that she would never have an affair. Eliza Freed really captured that push and pull of attraction, that back of forth of conscience over emotion and the true fight to do what is right and to try and make the right choices.“This won’t work if you’re in love with me. A mistake will be made.”“It isn’t a mistake.”“It’s worse. We’re a tragedy.”As much as I should have been rooting for these two to steer clear of each other there was no denying their attraction and it really was a foregone conclusion. This was not just an attraction of lust but they had an undeniable friendship, a soul mate connection that grew and grew the more and more they spent in each other’s company. It is this intense connection that managed to shift my moral compass firmly in their corner. I would never condone an affair, however, these two were perfect for each other and with such a crappy husband who showed her no affection, no attention and literally used her, it was no surprise that she strayed. However, it was not an easy choice and one that she battled with for a long time.“Brad didn’t realize I wasn’t some twenty-five-year-old he was effing. I was his wife, and I was already gone.”The Lion’s Den was fast paced and action packed and was told in three POV’s, Brad, Vince and Meredith. Eliza Freed really delivers an epic conclusion to this duet that will have you on the edge of your seat while delivering curve ball after curve ball.“Just follow your heart. It’ll lead you home.”“What if my heart lost its memory too?”Everyone’s story is told in this book and finally you get to see the behind scenes, warts and all which only added another dimension to the twisted that Eliza Freed has penned.“When a married man had an affair with a young girl, he was the only one having an affair. She was dating.”This duet was totally addictive, unputdownable and for me, an easy, quick read. Meredith’s kids really add the fun factor to this story and created many a laugh out loud moment as I sympathised with the endless, monotonous unanswerable questions that kids manage to pluck out of thin air and of course you cannot beat their unique fashion sense. Meredith was the epitome of a mama bear, her kids always came first and foremost and she would lay her life down for them, her life was her kids until someone showed her that she deserved a life too.“I was unhappy-horribly unhappy-and lonely. I let you fix what you never broke. I let you fill a spot you never vacated. I slipped into the darkness, because I’d follow you to hell if you asked me to.”This was a beautiful story that will have you heart swooning, while the suspense will have your stomach tied up in knots. It’s emotional in places but perfectly balanced with wit and humour that will also have you laughing out loud. For a cheating story, it worked, it wasn’t illicit, it was two people that found love when they weren’t looking. I cannot wait to read more from this author, my only complaint…I WANT AN EPILOGUE!!!!!“I’m Daniel, and my marriage is the lion’s den.”

By Samantha Pereira For those that believe there's never a reason to cheat, this novel blows that notion to bits with talented writing and a gripping story line. It is easy to understand how lines become blurred and how lonely hearts wander and seek out companionship and tenderness. Meredith and Vincent are easy to like and relate to even.Meredith was once a high-powered attorney until she was forced to become a stay-at-home mother. Her life consists of handling everyone's needs at the cost of burying her own. She doesn't have anyone to really talk with about her desires, needs, and wants since her husband is essentially just a monetary provider. He expects her to raise the children, manage the household, and give in to his physical needs without actually giving any support to Meredith besides money.Vincent is the chief of police for the small town where he and Meredith reside. He always knew he wanted to be on the force and never gave much thought to his love life so he married his high school girlfriend. His daughter is the same age as Meredith's. He never thought to stray from his dull marriage until meeting Meredith. The two meet due to the field trip both offered to chaperon for. They feel a zing of awareness which manifests inside them as lust. They are both seeking more out of their marriages to which they end up finding in each other. Vincent specifically gives Meredith the validation she seeks by asking about her day, her desires, and giving her what he can to satisfy her emotionally, mentally, and physically. He validates her existence with a job at the police office to get her out of the house and use her brain. He gives her his ear and satisfies her sexual desires. While I don't condone cheating, this novel really opened my eyes to understand. Granted, there's jackasses out there that just think they can do whatever they want and cheat but that isn't what happens in this novel. This story makes you really understand the reasons, how they tried to fight it, and how they ended up giving. The story completely hooked me and I look forward to reading the second book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. one expects a lot of hate and ranting but what one gets is the story ... By Juanita I have just finished the book Strange Women and other strangleholds by Nena Ndioma.I have a lot to say but I do not believe I have the way with words that would do justice to how I feel about the book. Nena Ndioma writes with a serenity that draws you in. In reading a personal memoir of this nature, one expects a lot of hate and ranting but what one gets is the story of a woman who understands the love of Christ and enjoys a peace that passes all understanding. She is obviously a Christian but this is not a "Christian" book. She writes from her heart and will get into your head. The book is simple yet not simplistic. It is a book, I, a happily married staunch Christian woman wish I had read when I was a much younger woman. If you are single, married, widowed, divorced especially if you are someone that has a relationship and you know it could be much more than you are enjoying currently, I would have you take a look at this book. It is the memoir of a woman who is so honest yet is not asking for your sympathy. She has walked her walk and invites you to share her journey that you may learn that even perfect people may not always have the perfect life but hopefully you will gain an understanding of your peculiar dynamics. This book does not endorse divorce and neither do I. It simply tells the story of a woman, who loved and survived the impact of her choices. I invite you to read.

Nena's story is one that so many African women (and non-Africans alike) can relate to. And whether married or single, separated or divorced, there is something in this book for every one, including the men!I admire her writing style, her courage, her honesty and her openness in this book.I have read this book a few times and will definitely read it again. I highly recommend it, its a book worth owning.Kudos Nena Ndioma!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nena's writing is beautiful, absorbing By Mbasekei Ayomobi Nena's writing is beautiful, absorbing, whimsical. And the subject, an insightful debunking of our folly as 'Christians' ...and as 'Africans'. Here's a winner! I'm truly sorry about what some women have had to go through. And really, it's not that there's a dearth of ministry to men...I've been involved in a lot of those, where the focus is on raising real and true men who are Christ-like...as husbands, fathers, leaders. I know many who are, too. The sad reality is just that not all men are mature in faith and character. I want to thank Nena Ndioma for the grace and courage she found to share her story. It's not just the story, but how she told it - guileless! It's remarkable, and it'll remain a healing/teaching tool for many others - married, unmarried, divorced, male or female.

Unfortunately, I have not read the previous book so I had a difficult time connecting with the characters. In this book, Joe Thorne is taking over a job that has always belonged to Martha Winter, preparing the Christmas dinner. Because this can be tricky, there were a few fumbles but the ending of the story is quite satisfying. It was well-written, as are all of Harriet Evans books. If the reader has read the previous book, A Place for Us, I believe they will enjoy this book also.I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I did not read the book that this was a spin-off from so was a little confused about where and how some of the family fit together but it was still a cute story. After reading other reveiwers comments it is a wrap up of the book "A Place For Us" so I would recommend that you read that first. I will go back and read it now as my interest in these characters is definitely peaked.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

That's Not Mine, by Anna Kang

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—That's (Not) Mine teaches the value of sharing by demonstrating the opposite. A tall brown bear and a stubby blue bear—the very same pair from You Are (Not) Small (Amazon, 2014)—both want to sit in the same comfy yellow chair, but neither is willing to give it up. They argue about who it belongs to, constantly crying "It's mine!", and just like belligerent children they offer the kind of reasoning one would expect from such a statement. Quickly, their fairly "innocent" attempts to lay claim to the chair through trickery descend into physically removing one another. Their furrowed brows express the seriousness of the situation without detracting from the humorous approach of the overall look. With copious white space, the design is effective and cute. The story ends on a reassuring note, as the characters realize their folly and make up. Kang and Weyant's minimalistic art and dialogue force viewers to make their own inferences about events, especially in regards to why it is wrong to act in such a manner. VERDICT With its clever use of reverse psychology, That's (Not) Mine provides the perfect foundation for a discussion on sharing.—Rachel Forbes, Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Review

“With its clever use of reverse psychology, That’s (Not) Mine provides the perfect foundation for a discussion on sharing.” —School Library Journal

“Kang’s stripped-down dialogue and Weyant’s exuberant cartoons tap into the core of their characters’ emotions in a story that highlights the foolishness of fighting when there’s fun to be had.” —Publishers Weekly

“The creators of 2015 Geisel Medal winner You Are (Not) Small take on an even more fundamental concept…A simple, direct addition to the ‘sharing’ shelf.” —Kirkus Reviews

"This book is just so much of what you want your young child to read. It's silly, and simple, and wholesome, with characters who are real and flawed and lovable.” —Once Upon A Story

“Just as in their previous picture book, Weyant’s illustrations are delightfully fun, and Kang’s story presents a life lesson without being overly didactic.” —5 Minutes For Books

“If you have preschoolers at home I highly recommend you add this book to your reading list. Even toddlers and early elementary aged kids will get a kick out of it.” —Where Imagination Grows

“The story is simple but when you add the illustrations to the two fighting over a chair you get lots of giggles! We were able to use the book as a teaching moment and talk about how the two friends were not being very friendly.” —A Rup Life

“It presents the concept of sharing in an easy and accessible way without feeling preachy. And it’s fun whether you’re trying to impart a lesson or not.” —Cracking the Cover

About the Author

Husband-and-wife team Anna Kang and Christopher Weyant are the creators of You Are (Not) Small, which won the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award and was named a Notable Children’s Book by the American Library Association. They live in New Jersey with their two daughters, Kate and Lily, a guinea pig named Athena, and a hermit crab named Olaf.

Anna, a native New Yorker, grew up believing everything was hers until one day she realized it was her brother’s, too. She received a master’s degree in fine arts from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where the visual storyteller in her was awakened, forever changing the way she saw art, life, and everything in between. In addition to writing, Anna loves to read, travel, laugh, eat, and nap.

Christopher is a cartoonist and illustrator. His work can regularly be seen in the New Yorker. His cartoons are syndicated worldwide and have been featured on the Today Show, Meet the Press, and World News Tonight. Christopher likes to share everything but his personal space on the subway. Learn to share with That’s (Not) Mine By Jessica at Cracking the Cover Like its predecessor, “That’s (Not) Mine” features simple text and bright, animated illustrations. It presents the concept of sharing in an easy and accessible way without feeling preachy. And it’s fun whether you’re trying to impart a lesson or not.My one quibble with “That’s (Not) Mine” is the publisher’s suggested age range. While humorous, it’s a bit simple for 7-year-olds. Truthfully, I think even a 6-year-old might get bored. Also, if your little one is younger than 2 but has started adding picture books (as opposed to board books) into their repertoire, I’d say this would work for them. My daughter is 18 months and loves it. My suggested age range: 18 months to 5 years.

By Zou Zou Emily Eden's novels are usually recommended as what to read when you've exhausted your collection of Jane Austen. Both authors wrote wonderful stories of love, folly and society. The Semi-Attached Couple concerns the brief courtship and not so harmonious marriage of Lady Helen Eskdale and Lord Teviot. The reader meets the friends and supposed friends of the aristocratic Eskdale family. The novel opens with Helen having second thoughts on her betrothal and upcoming marriage. Lord Teviot is a desirable parti, handsome and very wealthy. As a beloved only son, his manner is forceful and decided. Teviot fears that he loves Helen more than she loves him and he doesn't know how to remedy the situation. He protects himself by becoming more emotionally remote. Helen is accustomed to the easy camaraderie of close sibling relationships. As a member of a large affectionate family, she doesn't recognise the symptoms of a possessive lover. The Author introduces us to a wonderful cast of characters: Self-absorbed, mischief making Lady Portmore, cynical Colonel Beaufort, sweet, smart Eliza Douglas and her alarming mother, Mrs. Douglas. The dialogue is character revealing and very amusing. There is a secondary romance involving the young Douglas ladies. Most of the story takes place at one of Lord Teviot's luxurious country estates, where hunting, riding and various amusements manage to keep the young married couple separated by their duties as host and hostess to a veritable army of guests. Will Helen and Teviot manage to create a real marriage or continue on divergent paths? This is a marvelous romance. Great characters, witty dialogue and a view of the lives of wealthy aristocrats.Recommended.

Austenesque Victorian romance that begins at what’s usually the “happy ever after” By Jaylia Victorian author Emily Eden admired Jane Austen--and it shows in her astute and witty prose which delighted this Janite--but she begins her book where Jane’s stories end, with a wedding. Lovely Helen has all the ingredients for 19th century happiness. She’s beloved by her large well-off family and she’s about to marry wealthy Lord Teviot, who charmed her when they danced together. But being good Victorians they haven’t actually spent much time alone, and when she is whisked away after the ceremony she suddenly realises she doesn’t know or understand Teviot very well and she’s decidedly homesick, damaging her relationship with her proper but ardent new husband. Among other things the story becomes a post-wedding courtship with lots of twists and turns, ups and downs.Like Austen’s novels The Semi-attached Couple is filled with amusing characters and there are at least three romances that develop during the course of the plot. It took me a little while to get all the names and characters straight--there is a Lord Beaufort and a Colonel Beaufort for instance--but somewhere along the way this book became one I couldn’t put down. First I simply found it divertingly funny, with characters to laugh at and enjoy loving or hating, but as the story went on it also became exciting, then moving, until finally at the end it was deeply satisfying.

A very clever author By James Jones Loved the antique locutions, "did you give it me" but a human proofreader could have stopped some egregious errors in spelling and wording AU for all comes to mind vox for vex the errors were too numerous and intrusive. One engaged proofreader would have caught all the errors! Otherwise a fun little excursion into a time past.

Fun story about a family who downsized to live their dream of living life beyond the materialism we all get hooked on when younger. Or at least I did . Amber shares her families adventures and how her and her National Forest ranger husband are giving their two young sons a childhood of adventure in the Pacific Northwest.I grew up in Seattle, had a dream long ago of living more like they are doing when my son was young but other paths were destined for us. Love reading about how this family successfully made the transition and all the riches they are discovering along the way, both internal and external.A sweet read.

By Allie Sumner This is one of those books that make you look up from the page and look adoringly upon your children with a bit of wistful hope.Being a parent is never easy. There is a running internal debate over each and everything we do. From discipline to life lessons, we are always second guessing ourselves. This was one of those books that calm that inner turmoil. It helps you take a step back and let yourself enjoy the memories being made instead of constant questioning.Amber has a sweet writing voice and her stories have that soft edge that puts you at ease and helps you fall back into love with life. Her love for her family shines like a beacon through her stories. The whole book almost has a glow to it. It’s clear that Amber put her heart into every word.To see my full review, check out my blog AlliesOpinions on Wordpress!

Everything about Fiona is forbidden. She’s a party girl with dark desires. She’s beautiful, irresponsible, irresistible. She’s my patient. I’m her therapist. I’m past wanting her. Past possessing her. Past bedding her or protecting her. I’m willing to be self-destructive, negligent, brave, audacious, and stronger than I ever believed possible. She’s blunt force trauma to the heart. And she calls another man Master. **** Sensitive readers should be aware that this book gets a little dark. There's pain with the sex, and one character treats our main character terribly. **** If you've read KICK and/or USE from the Perdition Series, they are in here. The second half of the book is BREAK, which is the end of Fiona Drazen's story. There's a link right in front where you can click to get right to Break. This book is an entire story, from inception to epilogue. Standalone. End of.

Review ★★★★★ This book shattered me into tiny, glittering pieces and then threw me back together again just as violently all in a heartbeat. - The Lightning Room ★★★★★ CD Reiss doesn't just publish books. She unleashes them. -- Sinfully Sexy Book Reviews ★★★★★ ...Like taking a complete mind trip into the abyss. CD Reiss uses hard hitting words like a weapon....she is able to lure you into a false sense of security using her words as a caress one minute then striking without warning the next. Her words are as exquisite as they are shocking. She manages to pull you in, tease you, taunt you and leave you gasping for more! - TotallyBooked Blog★★★★★ I. Am. In. From the Author Questions about Forbidden from Nina at The Literary Gossip....Forbidden is Kick and Use, which have already been released, and the brand new book, Break. Why did you do it that way?Kick was released as part of the Bend anthology, so it's owned by about 20K people, but it kind of got lost. So the fact that Kick had had an odd type of release for the beginning of a series meant Use didn't reach a lot of people. When I wrote Break, which is longer than Kick and Use combined, I did it thinking it wasn't going to reach anyone but my hardcore fans. I read the whole series over and thought it really hung well together as a standalone. Then inspiration struck. Because Break would be more than half the book, I could release as a standalone! My fans would just skip to Break and everyone else could start from the beginning.Fiona's not your average heroine. What made you want to write about a celebutante?I wanted to explore what happens when a normal person is raised without boundaries. How pleasure and pain become the same thing because there are no limits to anything. She does drugs and has a lot of kinky sex because she's seeking boundaries. When she's seeking the limits of her darkness, the story gets dark. You write about Hollywood a lot! Why is that?I live in the heart of Los Angeles. I've almost been hit by paparazzi and I'll see a random crowd gathering around an entourage. My kids go to school with the kids of very famous people who live behind hedges and need bodyguards. I see the toll this can take on a person. But I also see how normal and human celebrities and their children are.

Haunting, visceral, and intensely heartfelt By Rachel AfterDarkBookLovers CD Reiss has outdone herself with Forbidden, and I feel like hugging her for giving us such an amazing story and a character like Fiona Drazen. It's unlike anything out there and unlike anything Reiss has written before. So many times this story put me through the emotional meat grinder and punched me in the gut only to turn around and fill me with complete joy. It's emotionally devastating, psychologically intriguing, and equal parts agonizing and poignant. And it's a story that will stick with you long after you've finished it.“I knew who I was. I was a celebrity without talent. I was an heiress. I was a party waiting to happen. I was an addict. I was his…”We've met numerous members of the Drazen family through Reiss’ other series, and here we get Fiona's story, and what a story it is. She's unapologetically sexual, an addict, and an in your face party girl with a self-destructive streak a mile wide. And she's a woman caught between two men who will go to any lengths to fight for her.“I’m the only one who can break you.”On one side is Deacon. Her lover, her Dom, her safe haven, and the man who owns her mind, body, and soul. He's the person who gives her boundaries and rules to ground her when she spirals out of control, and he's the man that knows how to break her down when she needs to be built back up.On the other side is Dr. Elliot Chapman. When Fiona wakes up in a mental hospital for stabbing her boyfriend with no recollection of how or why it happened, Elliot is the therapist assigned to help her regain those memories as well as help her uncover the reasons for her self-destructive behavior. He's the man who sees beyond her bad choices and the celebutante status, and he sees her as more than just a pretty thing for men to use. But he's also a man who in some ways is just as lost as Fiona is, and it's through his sessions with her that Elliot has his own sort of awakening when they both find themselves undeniably attracted to each other."I break rules with you. I'd break more. I'd break them all."The dynamics that Fiona has with each of these men is compelling in their own way, and even though I had a strong preference for who I thought was the right choice, I could see the value in both of them. Fiona is a character with a whole host of problems and through the first half of the book I wasn't sure who the best choice for her would be, or maybe neither of them were. Deacon is a force of nature that grounds Fiona when nothing else can, and he loves her not despite her flaws, but because of them. But does he love her the way that she needs? Is his love healthy for her or does it do more harm than good? If Deacon is a force of nature, then Elliot is the calm before the storm. He soothes her, calms her, and at the same time challenges her in ways no one else has. But is it love or lust that's driving him to her? Is she just an escape from his own disappointing life or is she worth losing everything for? Their relationship crossed so many ethical lines and maybe that's what I loved most about it, the fact that it was so forbidden and wrong in so many ways, and yet so natural that their attraction was almost inevitable. Each of them filled a void that the other needed. It's a story that doesn't have easy answers but what makes it so remarkable is that I was so invested in Fiona as a character that, while I loved Elliot (and I love him fiercely and unabashedly), I didn't mind who she ended up with as long as she was happy in the end. Every interaction, every emotion, every word they uttered was filtered through the lense of “how does this affect Fiona?” On the surface it may seem like a triangle, but really it's Fiona’s journey from a self-described junkie sex addict undeserving of love to a person who discovers her own self worth.“Crazy as it was, he loved me. Of all the world’s gifts, that was the greatest, and I wasn’t going to decide I didn’t deserve it. Only he could decide that, and if he said I was good enough for him, I wouldn’t argue otherwise.”It’s a credit to Reiss as a writer that she could have me so engaged in the fate of a fictional character to the point that I agonized over it. Everything about this book was emotional, but it wasn't the flowery, purple prose kind of emotion. It was distinctly visceral and gut wrenching, and also intensely erotic. I read the first two parts of Forbidden over a year ago when it was first conceived as serial, and I felt like I've been holding my breath ever since waiting for the end of Fiona’s journey and I didn't release that breath till the very last word of the epilogue. Luckily, Reiss has decided to release the entirety of Songs of Perdition as a standalone, and anyone who hasn't read it before can experience Fiona Drazen in all of her messy glory at once without the wait, and she is totally worth it. She along with CD Reiss are truly one of a kind.

I started the series when it was initially published. The series was to contain three statements: Kick, Use, Break. Lucky you—the series is now published in its entirety as a standalone novel!Kick is the first part of Forbidden, and it excellently sets up the story and frames the main characters. Our favorite red-headed party girl wakes in a prestigious psych hospital with no memory of what happened the night she stabbed her boyfriend. She is raw, crass, vulnerable, feral, and scared. The plot felt thick and sluggish like Fiona coming out of her drug and alcohol haze. Much of the novella involves Fiona recalling things of her near and distant past as she begins her psych evaluation and therapy. C.D. Reiss’ characters are intense, wicked, and misguided; the setting is claustrophobic and confining. Readers easily become Fiona's inmates instead of her observers.Use is the second part of Forbidden. It is just as incredible as Kick. The research and detail that goes into her writing makes her stories more vivid and realistic.Use is raw and edgy. Flashbacks, hypnosis and returned memories are very interesting tools for telling this tale. The pace of the book is frenetic and hot. At times I felt as embroiled in the manic emotions of the Westonwood patients as they were. The conclusion of Forbidden is titled Break. Fiona is like a paint splatter on a Jackson Pollock painting. She was raw before she entered Westonwood, and the atrocities she encounters while under their care have left her utterly broken. Her edges are frayed. Fiona’s self-hatred is brazenly apparent. Her feelings of unworthiness have driven every decision she has made in the past. Will she let continue to see herself in the same way or will she take the advice of Dr. Elliot Chapman and find a new way to describe herself?Fiona is a white-hot mess. Her emotional baggage is weighing her down and the tide is rising. Her vulnerability and her inner spirit make her attractive to both her hot psychiatrist and her gorgeous long-time dom/boyfriend. Both of these men want Fiona to get better, but the path they think she needs to take is wildly different. The men in Fiona’s life are complete opposites. Deacon, Fiona’s longtime Dom/boyfriend, is dark and brooding. He is not a man to be crossed. He is handsome, confident, and ruthless. He loves Fiona deeply and sees it as his responsibility to keep her on track and out of trouble. He’s the sort of man that readers should want Fiona to be done with, but I found his strength and his dedication to Fiona quite appealing.“I don’t know what I care about besides you."Elliot Chapman gave up his planned career in the seminary to become a therapist. His compassion for people, his sexual fantasies, and Fiona’s wantonness push him into an untenable and unethical situation. He wants to help her get better. He wants her to see her self-worth and make positive changes in her life. He wants to participate in the sexual kink that Fiona describes in their sessions. Elliot first appears as Fiona’s guardian angel, but I felt like his fantasies about his patient to be just as selfish as Deacon’s method for helping Fiona.“How far was I willing to go?”Ultimately, Fiona is the heroine, as it should be, and she finds a new path.“I was loved by a team of smart, screwed, comically-inclined vigilantes. But I was loved."I loved how masterfully C.D. Reiss weaves in details of her other books into each of her stories about the large and obscenely wealthy Drazen family. Forbidden takes place (or at least starts off) about sixteen years prior to the Songs of Submission series, while the Songs of Corruption series takes place concurrent to the Songs of Submission series. In each series, various Drazen family members have roles, and each of the series has beamed the spotlight on one of the siblings. I love Margie Drazen—the family fixer—she loves her siblings deeply and will do absolutely anything for them.I was surprised by so many things in the conclusion of Forbidden. The role Debbie plays in Fiona’s life (we’re first introduced to Debbie in the Songs of Submission series) was not at all expected; I was blown away! I anticipated that both Deacon and Elliot would “fight” over Fiona, and I was dumbfounded by the resolution. It was not at all what I anticipated. Whether I expected plot points or was shocked by them, each page had me riveted and my heart pounding.Forbidden can be a tough read. The mature, dark content will not appeal to some, but if you read this story more as a woman’s journey away from a self-destructive life, you’ll appreciate the glorious, rich details and character development CD Reiss’ intricate storytelling.

From prologue to epilogue this story held my mind, body, and soul hostage. I will always be a prisoner to this author's words. Shocked, stunned, crazed, elated, and euphoric, I felt every emotion possible during this read. Once again, CD Reiss shows off her amazing talent with every word, every page, and every chapter. She is a poet, a master, an unbelievable talent. Reiss brings a smile to my face no matter what genre she writes in. Her characters are flawed, damaged you might say, but in the end, they get the happily ever after that they were always meant to have. The author did her readers AND her characters justice in her Perdition series. In KICK, I was AMAZED. In USE, I was STUNNED, but in FORBIDDEN, the book that ties it all together, I was FLOORED! CD Reiss knows just what to write to slay me completely. But she also knows how to bring it all together to give her readers a scorching HOT and emotionally driven ending that astounds AND satisfies.Deacon, Elliot, Fiona. What is written in the stars for these three? Deacon has her submission. Elliot has her heart. Choices need to be made. Who will show Fiona her worth?A story of sexy, lies, and revenge. FORBIDDEN gives the fans what they want. A sexy, gripping, and intoxicating read that will have you on pins and needles the whole through.*Gifted copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*

Excellent viewpoint, easy to read By Kirby This is an excellent, easy to access book for anyone who is a caretaker for a child whose parents are gone, whether due to death, divorce or prison. It tells the child's eye view of what a child wants. The most insightful point is that it is not okay to ignore the situation to "normalize" things, but that it is better to ask the child how they are, note that mom or dad is not around and how that makes them feel. This book is written so that children in the situation, caretakers, parents or professionals can access the information easily.
