By Ryan I'll be honest, I haven't read them fully as they're gifts to two of my nieces; however, I will say that after reading a few passages, they seem great. The book is also made of heavier paper, which is great for younger kids (just knowing how tough they can be on such items). So far, five stars. Great gifts for Christmas.

I was concerned at first that the content would be too young for my 10 year old but it is perfect. Dailies are geared toward helping children understand God's ways and how they apply to everyday life. So happy with it that we have started giving as gifts to her friends.

How did Patricia Polacco become a writer? A perfect companion to the classic Thank You, Mr. Falker, The Art of Miss Chew, and Mr. Wayne’s Masterpiece, this book celebrates a teacher who inspired a young Patricia Polacco to become the writer and storyteller she is today. Trisha is nervous about being chosen for Miss Keller’s writing class. “Killer Keller” demands that her students dazzle her with their writing, and rumor has it that she has never given an A. The rumors turn out to be all too true—there’s just no pleasing Miss Keller. Then an unexpected loss leaves Trisha heartbroken. Thoughts of teachers and grades forgotten, she pours out her soul in a personal narrative. And when Miss Keller reads it, she tells Trisha, “You’ve given your words wings.”

An A From Miss Keller, by Patricia Polacco

From School Library Journal Gr 1–4—Trisha is nervous about taking Miss Keller's advanced writing class. True to the rumors, this teacher is tough, taking pains to critique Trisha's lack of emotional connection in her writing. Trisha visits with her neighbor Pop for encouragement, and he shares stories about his beloved wife and sons, who also took Killer Keller's writing class. After learning of Pop's death by sudden heart attack, Trisha writes down her feelings without worrying about her grade, and Miss Keller tells Trisha she has "given [her] words wings," finally earning an "A." The text maintains a conversational tone throughout ("Guess what?" and "She actually hugged me!") to tell this personal story of loss and growth. Polacco's colorful illustrations are engaging, with pencil lines used in the characters' facial expressions to evoke a range of emotion, from Miss Keller's birdlike scrutiny to Trisha's anxiety and heartbreaking grief. The middle school setting may make this text-heavy picture book better suited for independent reading or for sharing with older children. Add Miss Keller to Polacco's collection of inspirational teachers, including Mr. Falker, Mr. Lincoln, and Miss Chew. VERDICT A recommended general purchase, especially where longer picture books are needed.—Hannah Farmer, Seguin Public Library, TX

Review “Polacco introduces readers to another inspirational teacher from her past in this inspiring tale. . . . This story from the author’s life, colorfully illustrated with pencils and markers in her signature style, is affecting, engaging, and informative.”—Booklist“Polacco’s colorful illustrations are engaging, with pencil lines used in the characters’ facial expressions to evoke a range of emotion. . . . Add Miss Keller to Polacco’s collection of inspirational teachers, including Mr. Falker, Mr. Lincoln, and Miss Chew.”—School Library Journal“Inspired by Polacco’s experience growing up and the teacher who encouraged her to write, students can relate to Tricia’s experience and struggle in trying to please a teacher who seems impossible to please.”—School Library Connection

About the Author Patricia Polacco (www.patriciapolacco.com) is the beloved New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of over fifty picture books. She visits as many as two hundred classrooms in a single year, not only speaking but listening to the hundreds of children that she meets. Grateful for what teachers have done for her, she is also a popular keynote speaker celebrating teachers everywhere. She lives in Union City, Michigan, where she enjoys speaking to the myriad children who come to visit her and the famous meteor, the object of one of Patricia’s best-known stories.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An "A" for Polacco By James Charnock Miss Keller scares her students--she always has. She knows what she wants from them, and will take nothing less. She demands exceptional effort for the exceptional mark of "A". The problem is that the main character, Patricia (yes, the author at a young age), doesn't know how to write a personal essay which is emotional enough to tug at the heartstrings of the reader. Miss Keller is critical, demanding, and of the habit of not easily giving praise to her students. Young students, especially, want to please their teachers, and themselves and their parents. But Miss Keller's reluctance to praise her students scares them. This reminds me of a college professor I had, similar to Miss Keller, who refused to accept a writing project I had to do for a language arts teacher-prep course. If I don't pass this final course, I cannot become a teacher (without taking the course over). My extensive and intensive effort is rejected and I am told to do it over. I do. I am told, again, to do it over. I begin to dislike my professor and two others who agree with her. I think, for sure, I can't please this teacher. But I have to somehow improve my writing project a third time. As I am trudging through this last attempt, I finally understand why my former efforts were inadequate and unclear. Upon submission I got an "A". I had to persevere, as a former reviewer alluded, to do my best. I later rewrote that "term" paper into my first professional magazine article.Miss Keller reminds me that a teacher does not have to be liked to be effective. But a teacher does have to be respected--and Miss Keller is. Young Patricia's inner struggles with her strict teacher and her commiserations with a neighbor friend are very emotional to read....and also very heartwarming.Realistic Fiction (maybe not the latter): Grades 4-8 as a read-aloudThe Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

She has written a book that reaches out to children with specific areas of difficulties. This is an excellent story for students who might need a little encouragement. I loved this story and I loved the illustrations, too. Patricia Polacco never lets me down. She has the lovely talent of remembering childhood with all of the situations involved. I would want this book in every school library. Keep on writing, please Patricia. Good job!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Teachers matter By Dr Maggie Some days it may seem like parents and children do not respect teachers and the value of high standards. Polacco has shown us why high standards matter. Great caring teachers help educate future writers, doctors, scientists, parents and a multitude of other vocational choices. This reader is thankful Polacco had a teacher like Miss Keller, one who cared enough to demand she do her best and then some.

I think this is a must read for anyone looking to move ahead but searching for some support to visualize their dream. The real life stories brings you to that "aha" moment and causes you to pause, reflect and say "I can achieve that too". What I heard echoed most is one word 'sticktoitiveness' - the ability to remain committed despite the odds, which I think defines many who have made it.Hyacinth CampbellEducator/Career Coach

The Boy Who Fell from the Sky is the first of a mind-twisting new YA dystopian series

Wattpad Science Fiction Hotlist Book

Introducing Mathew Erlang, creator of holographic dragons, who is about to get tangled up in the future in a rather serious way

The world is falling apart in 2055. Floods have devastated London, on the eve of the First Space War. With the city locked down, sixteen-year-old Mathew Erlang is confined to his house with only his cat, his robot and his holographic dragons for company.

Desperate for a distraction from the chaos around him, Mathew becomes fascinated by his peculiar and reclusive neighbour, August Lestrange, and begins to investigate, turning to the virtual world of the Nexus and Blackweb for answers. But as he digs deeper, Mathew realises that Mr. Lestrange isn't a normal man at all.

When Mathew accidentally finds himself trapped in Lestrange’s house, he opens a door and falls four hundred years into the future. Unwittingly, he starts to destabilise the course of human history.

The Boy Who Fell from the Sky delves into a future where climate change and technology have transformed the world. It is the first book in the House Next Door trilogy, a young adult dystopian science fiction action adventure.

Mathew’s story continues in Silverwood, Book 2 in the House Next Door series.

˃˃˃ Interview with Author

Q. What made you want to write YA time travel fiction?

I love books like the Hunger Games and Divergent. I also love books like Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking and Chuck Wendig’s Heartland Trilogy. They are all exciting, deeply engaging dystopian action adventure series. They all make you stop and think. So I wanted to write something similar. But I’ve been reading about futurology and climate change for years and they have seeped into my subconscious. I liked the idea of exploring possible futures based on the non-fiction I’d be reading. To do that I needed Mathew Erlang, my main character, to be able to jump forward into the future to see how things turn out.

Q. Why specifically write teen dystopia? Why not write for adults?

I’m not sure I am specifically writing just for teens. I read a lot of young adult fiction and I’m certainly not a teen! But when I built the world and the much bigger story that Mathew’s tale exists in, he happened to turn out to be a teenaged boy at the beginning of his series.

Q. So is there a bigger story beyond Mathew’s then?

Readers need to find out more about the Lamplighter, the Kind and understand more about who Mr. Lestrange really is, so yes, there's lots more to come.

Q. You describe your books at cli-fi. What does that mean?

Cli-fi means climate change fiction. It’s a spin on sci-fi, of course, but it’s a type of dystopian science fiction or speculative fiction that specifically deals with the impact of climate change on the people of the future.

Q. Why did you want to write about climate change?

It’s the big issue of our times and the biggest challenge we’ve faced as a civilisation. There’s a huge scientific consensus about the fact that climate change is man made and that it is likely to massively disrupt our lives in the future, but lots of people don’t believe in it. I read an article a while ago in The New Scientist (which is my favourite magazine) saying that the climate change lobby needs more artists and writers to go and spread the message. Frighteningly, young people, who are likely to suffer the most in the future, are particularly not engaging with the issue.

Q. When will the next one in the series be out?

The third and final part, The Moon at Noon will be out in December 2015. Look out for the box-set in early 2016.

All of the technology, the political environment and the state of global climate were a realistic portrayal of the future that’s already unfolding.Overall, it was an easy read with an interesting cast of characters. I think there’s appeal for both teens and adults. The book takes a critical look at some weighty subjects, like technology’s impact on privacy, government control, and the devastating impacts of climate change, but it’s packaged in a way that makes it engaging and accessible. The present tense narration lent to the sense of immersion in the story, and I found it to be a fitting choice for a novel that takes place in the future. Mathew was the classic “unlikely hero” sort, with a good balance of creativity and adventurousness to make him endearing. His weaknesses and flaws make him believable, but he’s also driven.Because this book presents a fully realized future vision, there is a fair amount of exposition at points in the novel. I found some of this exposition to be a bit heavy-handed, breaking away from the scene to explain functionality or design specifics. Though I would have liked some of that information to be more smoothly integrated into the narrative and action, I was fascinated enough by the content that those cutaways weren’t overly distracting. The story is not complete with this one volume, with the end begging for an immediate read of the next volume. But, I am greatly looking forward to going along for the ride with this trilogy!

I appreciate that. This story is outside of my normal genres. But I totally enjoyed it nonetheless. The future worlds created were amazing. By the details given, one could visualize where the author took us. I enjoyed the characters, the mystery and the thought provoking problems of the future. Jule has a sequel to this and I anticipate it to be just as good, and probably better!

By Amazon Customer Innovative, imaginative, tantalising futuristic fantasy which I loved.I read the first two chapters of The Boy Who Fell from the Sky on a train out of London. Somewhat appropriate, as events in the novel would later show. I was immediately intrigued to see where the opening sentences would lead me as I was bombarded by the physical sensations and vivid colours of fast-moving action. I was then quickly yanked from this world neither I nor the protagonist had had chance to figure out into a very different world of technology that filled me with a sudden sense of foreboding. House robots and driverless cars gave me a glimpse of a futuristic environment where I half expected a Terminator-type metal spike to protrude from the friendly domestic helper pottering around the kitchen.Relieved that no one appeared to be about to come to a sticky end, at least for now, I read on and was drawn into a fascinating story in a London created by the powerful imagination of Jule Owen. As one of the characters later states: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” This encapsulates what I love about the book as it satisfies the need for intrigue and interest future tech can provide along with my secret urge for a little other worldly, borderline magic, (almost) inexplicable stuff! This novel gave me interest on many different levels from individual to worldwide; from everyday London landmarks I recognise to a London I hope never to see. As well as being an excellent story to read, there is a serious and sinister thread running throughout which I see as a clear message to all of us to clean up our act before it’s too late and we totally destroy the beautiful place we inhabit and exchange it for somewhere I would never wish to travel to. The somewhat scary part is that 2055 is really not so far off.Yet I’m a cup-half-full person and I love the optimism embodied in the idea that “there is something sublime” in every one of us. I may be uncomfortable and disturbed by this future London, just about recognisable as a version of the London I was whizzing in and out of as I read this book but I am left with a feeling that through the action the novel’s main characters are taking, there is still hope for all of us.As they say in the later chapters: “The proper place for people is under the sky, not in tunnels and caves.” Let that be a warning to us. But don’t let that spoil our enjoyment of this thoroughly entertaining book which was a joy to read.So glad I have already downloaded the sequel!

By far the most instrumental tool we have in teaching our young talker new words. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED no matter which book you choose.2) All First Seek and Find books are very durable. Thick, sturdy pages. Easy to clean if needed. They hardly wear at all. For these reasons, I think buying the used ones for $4 (a penny plus $3.99 shipping) on amazon is just fine.3) About us: Our boy is 22 months old who loves trains, and LOVES Thomas!!! F.L. & F. books have been his favorite since he was 18 months old.4) This particular book is slightly unimpressive when compared to other first seek and finds (that's just my opinion). Not as much going on in the pictures to talk about and discuss. However, my toddler would completely disagree, this is his favorite seek and find book!!!5) These books are far better than the I SPY level one books (board books or paperback). The board books only have 2 objects to find per page, the paperbacks have 4-5 objects per page. Most First Seek and Find books have 7-8 objects per page. More bang for your book and it will keep your baby more interested.6) As another reviewer pointed out, these are books you can hand your children and automatically just love upon first sight. First seek and finds require a lot of interaction (at least in the beginning). They are books to aid you in TEACHING your children, as all books in your house should be!

I am slightly disappointed in the book itself because I thought it had flaps, but it is a flat design. It is still very good, but better for a slightly older child than my nephew and I wanted it for him to use now. However my nephew will be able to use it when he gets a bit older so it is still good.
