Amelia Bayberry is plagued by the memory of a child she’s never had. As her faith is challenged more than ever, will she be able to surrender her own will and confront her deepest fears? The seasons change, but Amelia and Jacob Bayberry’s lives remain the same – barren. They tried having children on their own for six years before seeking advice from medical professionals. However, each appointment leads them no closer to the truth they seek. Caught in the midst of their disappointment, they struggle to be happy for others who are entering joyful life changes. Amelia watches her brother’s new found relationship develop and worries whether they will marry and have children before her and Jake. At the same time, her sister announces she is pregnant, and Amelia must observe everything she longs to experience for herself happen to her sister. The absence of the child they have longed to have and dreamed about for many years begins to wear on their relationship. Will this challenge cause them to doubt their faith and each other? Or will it bring them closer than they could ever have imagined and open doors they never thought they would have to enter?

Waiting for Autumn, by Neesha E. Oliver

From the Back Cover From Thomas Howard, author of "On Being Catholic" and many other great works:"Waiting for Autumn takes us deeply into the experience of a young woman, Neesha Oliver, and her husband David, who have had to face the consequences of infertility in their marriage. For readers on the outside of such a situation, this may seem to be a difficult, but manageable, experience. Not so. The narrative that we are taken into is, clearly, and in a profound sense, a death. Or--can it be?--a death that won't die and go away. The parents--and obviously, most sharply, the woman--must face this death again and again--and again. It is remorseless. It can't be merely "put away." A great abyss has opened before the couple. Heartbreak, desolation, darkness, vacuity, tears--all these words take on huge and unforeseen reality. But it takes a very good writer to draw us into the experience without resorting to mere self-pity, over-writing, and cheap forms of sentimentalism. We readers are spared much of this sort of thing. Neesha Oliver writes with the firm and controlled approach which alone can carry such a narrative along with the dignity and solemnity that the experience of infertility deserves. I recommend this story, both to those who themselves may have shared the darkness that attends infertility, and those who know nothing of that darkness. It will enlarge the reader's capacity for understanding suffering, and for entering into that region. And--it must be said--we are not left in mere darkness. Grace comes into the darkness and illumines the whole narrative--but again, without any facile tactics on the part of the author."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful story not only for women and men suffering from infertility, but for anyone who wants to understand their struggle. By MCJ This is a beautifully written, heartfelt and genuine story of a couple who is experiencing difficulty conceiving. It allows us to accompany Amelia and Jake on their journey, as with great desire they long for the fruit of their marriage. We get to share in their setbacks, their frustrations, the suffering they experience, and how they cope with it as a married couple. The book is never preachy. Amelia and Jake's choice to use natural methods over IVF is their personal choice, cooperating with nature and God's will, but not a condemnation of her sister Claire's IVF pregnancy. Despite their desire for a child of their own, Amelia and her husband want to do things right, even if that choice means that ultimately they may remain childless. The book shows the beauty of how Jake and Amelia support each other in their marriage and live out their promise to be true to each other in good times and in bad.I love this book especially because it gives me, the father of five children, three of whom are alive and two lost in miscarriages, insight into the enormous struggle couples are experiencing when dealing with infertility. I love this book also because it gives me a little bit of insight into how it affects women in a way that we men normally don't get to see. As Amelia says in her story, pregnancy is visible, but infertility remains invisible. Thank you, Neesha Oliver, for making infertility visible and bringing it into the open.
