Review "Twenty pages into your book and it feels like I've finally found my bible. It has literally never occurred to me that anyone else felt this way. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" --Susan Howson, RVA News"...[A]n absolutely necessary handbook for anyone who has ever felt that burning longing to write and all the tangled emotions that come with it: doubt, anxiety, fear, self-flagellation... Valley offers prompts, gentle guidance and practical advice on how to approach this tricky process of extracting splinters and turning them into stories. If you write, or want to write, or even wish you could write, read this book. It's for you." --Melissa Scott Sinclair, author of The End"The Halfway House for Writers is a gem of a book. Filled with revealing personal anecdotes and honest advice it's a combination memoir/self-help book disguised as a handbook for aspiring writers." --Noah Scalin, author of Skull-A-Day"The Halfway House for Writers is a book I'll read again. And again. And again... I couldn't put it down.... The title is deceiving. I think Halfway House will inspire artists of all kinds, not just writers. It nurtures the creative spirit. Valley's approach is fresh and honest and real--a new wisdom for a new decade." --A.B. Westrick, author of Brotherhood
From the Author I've been brought up by high school literary magazines and college creative writing workshops. I have been a camper, counselor and director of creative writing camps for kids. I have been in writing groups and writing classes. I have interviewed authors and reviewed their books. I have judged fiction contests, fellowships and awards for children and adults. I have taught creative nonfiction workshops, classes and retreats. I have been a book editor, published in anthologies and authored first person columns.I am in recovery from everything. Alcohol and drugs and money and donuts and love. But also a lifelong addiction to terrorizing myself as a writer, editing myself down to the bone, comparing my writing to everyone else's and basically sacrificing myself at the altar of unrealistic expectations. I have been searching for a process by which to lay down my weapons, to stop holding myself hostage, to stop strangling my work before it has a chance to breathe. I am learning to become a gentle editor and a kind friend to myself on the page. What follows are some of the most essential things I have learned about writing after studying hundreds of books and teaching hundreds of writers of every level and degree of experience. In this handbook, I have written about some of the most common themes and threads that have arisen repeatedly in my classes, practical advice for getting started on the page, the story of my own journey towards healing as a writer, some samples of my work that have emerged from my practice and an invitation to submit your own writing to my online literary magazine, Life in 10 Minutes.I am not in charge of the Halfway House--I am a student of it. Every single day when I sit down to write I am a beginner. Whether you have written every day of your life or none, welcome. We are all on the same blank page together.
About the Author Valley Haggard has written in short and long form all her life. She is a big fan of the postcard, the 6-word memoir and drawers full of unfinished manuscripts. She has slept in tents, hostels, motels, couches, tool sheds, log cabins, bunk beds and ship bowels for short periods of time and the house she grew up in for much longer than that. She has lived in Virginia, New York, Italy, Colorado, Arkansas, and Alaska, holding jobs as a Waffle House waitress, Dude Ranch Cabin Girl, cruise ship stewardess and hotel maid. She has written book reviews, author interviews and first person columns; judged fiction contests and fellowships and sat on non-profit writing boards. The founder and co-director of Richmond Young Writers, she leads creative nonfiction marathons, workshops and retreats for adults. She has a handsome husband, a brilliant son, an addictive personality and a voracious appetite for all things word.

Sobel When it comes time for Natalie Goldberg to pass on the baton to the next generation's writing muse, Valley Haggard should be first in line. "Halfway House for Writers" will not only open the doors to your imagination, it will reveal that the house itself remains under construction and you can add doors wherever you want them, including one on the upstairs bathroom ceiling that leads to a 360-degree panoramic view of your ragged slipshod jerry-rigged back-alley neighborhood, though somehow still shimmering with incandescent light. Valley's book will inspire even the most blocked slug of a non-disciplined, self-hating wannabe writer to edge forward to the blank page and dare to begin putting words down, for better or worse, trusting that a hidden font of wild creative revelation lies just beneath the surface of mundane mind, just waiting to storm the gates of self-censorship and explode into the world of free expression.
