"What do you get when you combine an independent-minded, sixty-year-old mother with her adventurous seventeen-year-old son who hit the road together for his junior year? Consider the offbeat year when Mary Lois Sennewald and Ryan Costello left home to pursue learning in the wider world. Throwing conformity to the winds, the pair set out in August 2002 in a 1987 Volkswagen campervan, wandering up the Mississippi, across Canada to Newfoundland, down through New England, farther down into southern Mexico, concluding in Colorado high country. In this provocative memoir of foibles and family, astonishment, missteps, and magical moments, they share what they learned. In so doing, they challenge preconceptions about education, freedom and the necessities for a good life. By turns funny, poignant, and heart-warming, Roadschooling Ryan: Learn as We Go is about a young man on the brink of adulthood peering into the world, and a mother insisting on doing his schooling her way. It is also about survival, relative sanity, and compassion in very close quarters. Most of all, it is about laughing at fear, seeking wisdom and knowledge wherever one lands, and having a great time no matter where the road leads."

By Dale Suiter Roadschooling Ryan, Learn As We Go is a heart-warming account of a mother and son spending a school year traveling across Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. At his mother's suggestion, Ryan agreed to substitute his junior year of high school for life on the road, traveling in their VW van. Careful to ensure that he would be ready for his senior year, Ryan's mother Mary, the author, carefully chose his reading assignments according to the roads they were traveling. They supplemented textbook work with visits to museums and parks and made a point to seek out friends and even strangers along the way who would enrich their experiences. However, according to Ryan's journal entries included in the book, it is evident that the journey itself may have been the greatest teacher. During their time on the road, this 17 year old learned how to make new friends, trust strangers, find the good in others, and a multitude of life's lessons that can't be taught in a school. The author's excitement for introducing her son to the wonders of travel is evident as she eloquently describes the places and people they met along the way. The most important lesson of all was that the mother and son learned to be friends.Roadschooling Ryan is a must read for anyone interested in travel and especially for parents interested in home schooling, taking their kids on a road trip or just wanting to build a better relationship with their child. I consider myself one of the fortunate ones to have met the author and her son along their journey and my life has been richer for it.

How many people dream of spending more quality time with their children? How many people are creative and practical enough to make their dreams real by throwing in a VW van, a home schooling curriculum, and taking off across the US, Canada, and Mexico for a year?Mother Mary Sennewald and her 17 year old son Ryan did just that. This book is a chronical of that year--including the viewpoints of both mother and son. It captures the the adventures, misadventures, unexpected learnings, and the path they took to a deeper level of friendship with each other and the world. If you have a passion for traveling, parenting, home schooling, or just plain old adventure, then "Roadschooling Ryan" is for you.
