The South has a long tradition of fine storytellers, and now one comes along perhaps better than most. Jim Ritchie isn't bashful; he jumps right in, holding the reader spellbound with his uproariously earthy frankness. A master teller in the oral tradition, the author performs even better on the stage of these pages, making his subjects come to life with his own homespun style. The reader who has grown up in the South will swear that he knows each and every character in these tales: from the "Indian doctor" with the secret hemorrhoid cure to the bull who couldn't keep his "loins" out of reach of the youngster's BB gun; he'll identify with Bubba gigging for Giant Southern Frogs and with the curious cat that burned the cabin down; he'll remember high school teammates like "Shorty" and "Speedy", as well as college fraternity brothers like "Snake" and "Stud". And he'll laugh while remembering.

Review ...The tales are stretched just tall enough that the reader laughs with mouth agape at both the humor and the audacity of someone who tries to pass off such exaggerated stories as the honest to God truth, but somewhere beneath the kudzu and above the farmland soil, a truth rings through the tales which lets one know something included in them really did happen...Ritchie said he hopes those who read his book will be "grinning when they quit," and rest assured, you will be. -- Madison County Journal, May 1, 1997In the interest of maintaining your present cadre of friends, don't, I repeat, don't, offer a copy of Shocco Tales: Southern Fried Sagas to a friend on the mend from an appendectomy. In that condition loud laughs cause much pain. -- The Northside Sun, August 8, 1996
From the Publisher The South has a long tradition of fine storytellers, and now a new one comes along, perhaps better than all the rest. Jim Ritchie isn't bashful; he jumps right in, holding the reader spellbound with his uproarious humor and earthy frankness. A master teller in the oral tradition, the author performs even better on the stage of these pages, making the subjects come to life with his own homespun style. Shocco Tales is at once humorous, yet loving. It's kind of like a raw oyster; rough on the outside, delicious on the inside, yet even better flavored with the South's ubiquitous peppery seasoning. And Jim Ritchie has had plenty of peppery experiences; more than most folks could cram into several lifetimes...
From the Author I believe that laughter is the music of the soul. And I hope that as you read the book, your music rings out loud and clear

By bdouglas@netdoor.com You can see the cracker barrel in your mind and picture the old timers sitting around it listening to stories such as these. The stories come alive and the illustrations are terriffic! If you are from the south you will relate. If you're not from the south (too bad) you will wish you were. Great read, great fun! I recommend it heartily!

Clark After reading his book, Shocco Tales, I was even more convinced that Jim Ritchie was the great story teller that I assumed he was. He is everything a Southern writer should be: humorous, mysterious, and entertaining. A definite must have...
