About the Author Lary Crews has been a writer and editor since 1985. His first three paperback mystery novels were published by Bantam-Lynx and they sold a combined quarter-million copies. Lary was an online writing instructor for AOL's Online Campus for 15 years, teaching 4,125 students in 26 states how to write novels. His nonfiction book, based on his class, called Novel Secrets: How to Write a GOOD Self-Published Novel, is available in paperback and for Kindle.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Novel Secrets is an excellent read for the aspiring novelist By Travelholic Novel Secrets is an excellent read for the aspiring novelist. Lary Crews has not only written novels himself but has also taught the subject and in this book his expertise shows. He covers everything one would expect: plotting, characterisation, dialogue, style, etc. I found his ‘Make Sure’ checklist very helpful. I’d recommend this book to any novelist keen to hone their skills and have no hesitation in giving it five stars.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A Must-Read for the Budding Novelist By Hypnotist 101 As a successful non-fiction author, I have been trying to make the crossover to fiction for years, and I've read a heap of books on the Novelist's Craft. This is far-and-away the most useful and informative of the lot. Lary Crews' style is no-nonsense ("do this, don't do that") and tremendously well-organised in a sequence that makes perfect sense. Without 'spoiling the plot', two things I learned in the first half hour; Write a Secret Draft first, and let the characters write the story (don't waste time on outlining) - gold dust indeed. I also particularly liked the chapter on how to tighten your prose, i.e. words to stop using. Armed with Crews' undoubted experience and wisdom I'm now powering through my manuscript, and back on track to actually publish something soon (three books in the pipe). Full of solid practical guidance, I would classify this as a 'must read' for anyone embarking on their first fiction project, or trying to raise their game. My Kindle copy is now about 50% hi-lighted, it really is that packed full of wisdom. No amount of reading is gonna make anyone a great novelist - talent and ability must necessarily come from within - but with Novel Secrets as a companion, you'll definitely save a lot of time and energy in the writing process. I could gush some more, but I guess I'd better get back to the keyboard; this book won't write itself! Five huge stars.
