About the Author Marianne Sunderland is a veteran homeschool mother who has been homeschooling her 8 children (7 of whom are dyslexic) since 1995. She is also a popular homeschool consultant, a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor, owner of the popular web site, HomeschoolingWithDyslexia.com and author of Dyslexia 101: Truths, Myths and What Really Works, a parent’s guide to navigating the world of dyslexia. Marianne understands how it feels to be completely overwhelmed and frustrated by the load of information (and misinformation) about dyslexia that exists today. Marianne began her homeschooling career in 1995 out of a desire to give her kids the best education possible. Despite a rich educational experience of travel and individualized teaching, her oldest child, though obviously very bright, struggled mysteriously to crack the code of reading. Educational testing revealed dyslexia. Thus began Marianne’s search for the ‘cure’ for her son’s dyslexia. An educated parent and avid reader, Marianne knew that without a strong foundation in reading skills, her son would struggle in all areas of his life and education. Years later, that boy with his unique and individualized home education, graduated from high school with honors and holds a world record as the youngest American to sail around the world alone. Since those early days of tears and exasperation, Marianne has been successfully homeschooling her children with dyslexia using individualized, multi-sensory and research-based methods. All people with dyslexia can learn to read, write and spell with the right methods! Marianne is a popular speaker at homeschool groups, private schools, conferences and conventions. Her unique perspective gained by homeschooling her own children with dyslexia has helped her to have both the wisdom and understanding that parents need.
