The claim is often made that interfaith marriages fail more often than same-faith partnerships. So what are the chances of survival for the ultimate mixed marriage--one between religious and nonreligious partners? Nearly 20 percent of Americans now self-identify as nonreligious, including millions who are married to religious believers. Despite the differences, many of these marriages succeed beautifully. In this landmark book, popular author and secular humanist Dale McGowan explores some of the stories of these unions, whose very endurance flies in the face of conventional wisdom, including his own marriage to a believing Christian. Drawing on sociology, psychology, and real-life experience, he shares: ● Negotiation tips that set the stage for harmonious relationships ● Strategies for dealing with pressure from extended family ● Profiles of families who have successfully blended different world views ● Insights for helping kids make their own choices about religious identity ● Advice for handling holidays, churchgoing, baptism, circumcision, religious literacy, and more The first book of its kind, In Faith and In Doubt helps partners navigate the complexities of their situation while celebrating the extraordinary richness it affords their relationship, their children, and those around them.

"...a clear and engaging guide." --Publishers Weekly
From the Back Cover Marriage today looks very different from the past, when Catholics married Catholics and Evangelicals married Evangelicals. Shifting demographics, changing worldviews, and abandoned orthodoxies make who we marry an open question. And more and more, people who identify as religious are partnering with those from the growing secular ranks. Can these marriages survive the conflicts and challenges ahead?Absolutely, reports award-winning author and noted secular humanist Dale McGowan. His own long marriage to a devout believer is testament to the enduring strength of religious/nonreligious unions. But his story is only one of many. In Faith and In Doubt recounts the setbacks and successes of eight other couples as they navigate the minefields of mixed-belief marriage . . . reveals eye-opening findings from the author's original survey . . . teases out helpful insights from the published research . . . and paints a nuanced picture of religious practices today, with guidance for crossing the belief gap--happily, for the long term.Filled with illuminating quizzes and surprising revelations, the book distills the sweeping investigation into a set of practical lessons learned, including how to: * Locate the belief/nonbelief combinations that work best together* Communicate with respect and find common ground* Blend divergent ideas into a beautiful wedding ceremony* Decide on holidays, churchgoing, baptism, circumcision, and more* Raise religiously literate children and bridge child-rearing differencesIn Faith and In Doubt gives couples the information, inspiration, and confidence for forging successful unions amid dissimilar beliefs, and a rare window into the extraordinary richness their differences can bring to the relationship, their children, and those around them.

He has truly moved past the no-God angst that plagues most of us. This book calmed me down, caused me to redouble my efforts to be kind to my wife, and gave me new hope for our relationship.

My wife and I are one of the interbelief couples featured in the book (I'm an atheist, she is a Christian). Author, Dale McGowan, did a fantastic job capturing our story in a way that is interesting and accessible to others. His writing style and insight are quite engaging to me as a reader. The tips on getting relationships to work between people of different beliefs are spot on. Frankly, this book could save your marriage, or put a failing relationship back on track, or just help when first meeting a potential mate with different beliefs. That is definitely worth the price of admission.

Dale McGowen treated us with tender care, a lot of respect and let us speak for ourselves.I am a Christian married to an atheist, with kids and I wish someone had put this book in my hands at the start of our journey!! Every page is full of the hope I needed starting out. In it I am reminded that the problems in our marriage are not insurmountable and our marriage is not doomed to failure.I highly recommend this book. While it is written especially for those in an inter-faith relationship, it would also be good for someone who has a loved one in an interfaith relationship. It is perfect for the believer and non-believer and gives a great perspective.
