During her 40-year career as an English and drama teacher for high school students, Clenece Hills has written and directed more than 150 dramatic programs for students and community groups. Incorporating her love of poetry to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy, she has created M Is for Marching as a candle lighting ceremony. Appropriate for one or multiple participants of any age, the program’s poetry lends itself to a simple, read-aloud approach requiring no rehearsal. The program invites participants to bring their own flavor and interpretation to the poems, thus imbuing it with a dramatic message of diversity and hope. The program has been produced many times, and is very appropriate for Black History Month and Dr. King’s birthday.

Winter M is for Marching is a great way to reinforce with children the milestones in the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. including the March on Washington, the Civil Rights Act, and the Letter from the Birmingham jail. At the same time it invites adults to revisit the impact this great man had and continues to have on America. For all ages, it reinforces the values embedded in King’s legacy. Lines from the poems like “Tolerance is the drummer of Martin’s band” and “The place of each person is at the mountain’s quest” use metaphor to provoke us to reexamine our beliefs and to consider how we can act as models to carry on King’s legacy. The poems, written in rhyme, feature both true and near rhymes, providing a rhythm beneath the performer’s words and enhancing the effectiveness of an oral performance. In her introduction Hills provides a helpful properties list that would make the staging of the candlelight ceremony a no-brainer for all who want to create a moving atmosphere.

These beautifully written poems capture the history and essence of Dr By Amazon Customer These beautifully written poems capture the history and essence of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life. The poems are educational and thought-provoking. I, personally, would love to see this work become an annual community event. Poems read by those who are moved by the words and chosen by the celebration committee to share each year on his birthday. What an honor to be chosen to bring a letter to life and then light a candle. A moving experience for all.

MLK Marches On By Nancy Pike Hause This is a ceremony of poems, suitable for use in groups of older children to adults, that is moving, clearly written when used by children, and well done, thoughtful and insightful for adults. It would be a great addition to any class or club's materials to be used when Martin Luther King is to be honored.
