Lily and Bear, by Lisa Stubbs

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1— Lily, a girl in a red tutu, loves to draw. One day she depicts friendship and imaginative play in the form of a big brown bear. Together, Lily and Bear go on kid adventures and bear adventures until it is time to sleep. The illustrations are done in a naive style with crayons and swaths of geometric patterns. Simple, bold text contributes just enough to the illustrations, creating a lovely partnership between words and images. VERDICT A great addition to picture book and storytime collections.—Mindy Whipple, West Jordan Library, UT

Review Lily loves to draw, and when her crayon-sketched bear comes off the page and into real life, she finally has a friend to share her favorite things with: playing make-believe, attending tea parties, and “sail[ing] carpet seas” as pirates. Eventually, Bear is ready for something new, and he leads Lily outdoors and shares his world with her. Stubbs shows them catching fish, eating huckleberries, “and scratch[ing] their backs on a knotty pine” until the day is done and they curl up to dream of future adventures. The charming, childlike style of Lily’s crayoned art gives way to the screenprint-meets-scratchboard look of newcomer Stubbs’s mixed-media work, giving the book a playful freshness. The cheerful palette, which looks like it could have sprung directly from Lily’s crayon pail, is well suited to this upbeat story of young friendship. The contrast between Lily and Bear’s indoor and outdoor worlds, as well as the willingness with which both friends participate in things the other loves, creates a strong sense that all good friendships require a little give and take. Kind of simple yet remarkable achievement By Helpful Advice “Lily and Bear” made by Lisa Stubbs is picture book that grabs attention from the first reading; though book looks kind of simple, the author manages with her story, presentation and mostly with imaginative drawings make reader to want to read it again and again.Lisa Stubbs brought inside the message of creativity and friendship, showing that if you truly believe your dreams will come true - nicely wrapped in a beautiful story about a girl and bear.Main character, girl named Lily, loves to draw all kind of things – cats, girls, birds, boats, houses, hearts, sea, ship, kitchenware and many others. Her world is full of drawings and colors until one day when Lily drew - a bear. And when a bear will come to life, the two main characters of this beautiful story will become friends and spend the day together doing all the things which they could thought of.This is the first book for children I read from Lisa Stubbs, but hopefully not her last – combination of colorful illustrations and nicely written text, made in simple, yet effective way shows that you can sometimes stumble on remarkable pieces when you least expect it – something that few times I experienced in the world of children books. The short text on almost every page leads reader with delight through the story and it’s good that there are wonderful illustrations inside because otherwise this book would be read in only a few minutes. The story illustrations found between the covers are collection of simple picture made in preschool child style that will spark your child interest for both this story and drawing process – something that few books managed to achieve. Therefore do not be surprised if your child (as my daughter) will try to draw things found inside. The lesson book brought about achieving dreams is beautiful and important for every child to believe in, and when you take into account all other above mentioned elements, “Lily and Bear” is a remarkable achievement that neither you nor your children should miss.
