“A fascinating and enthralling look at Great Britain in the 1970s as experienced through the eyes of Guy, a North Yorkshire teen, and Mouse, a Welsh girl. I had a marvelous time reading Unlikely Soldiers and am looking forward to the next book in the series. It's most highly recommended." Jack Magnus for Readers’ Favorite. BOOK ONE Seventies Britain. Cheesecloth is considered high fashion, young teenage girls are in love with the Bay City Rollers and the middle aged are outraged by Punk Rock. Naive Michelle Warbutton longs to see the world; already world weary, Guy Halfpenny is desperate to escape from his. Both have limited choices. Their paths aren’t destined to cross until they join the British Army - where sexism is rife and political correctness hasn't been invented. Discover how lives are shaped, friendships forged, and loves won and lost in this compelling adventure of humour, passion and tragedy.

Unlikely Soldiers Book One: (Civvy to Squaddie), by Deb McEwan

Review Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite - 5 StarsUnlikely Soldiers: Civvy to Squaddie, Book One is a military fiction novel written by Deb McEwan. Guy's daily schedule was crowded from the moment he woke up until he went to sleep. His father was in prison, and his mother seemed unwilling to take any responsibility for the care of her four younger children. It was only due to the fact that his school was located too far away for him to be in charge of collecting his younger brothers and sisters from school that his mother had to accept that task, which she did in no small measure because she feared the fine a police report would bring. Guy kept the house in order, fed and cared for the other kids, and then went off to do his paper route after school. Still, his mother was outraged that he wanted to continue with his schooling instead of going to work full-time and becoming as she called it 'the man of the house.' He kept his savings hidden out of her reach and planned to open a savings account for his education. Mr. Jarvis, his next-door neighbor, gave him encouragement and advice about his plans for school, and his math teacher also recognized his abilities, but getting past his obligations to his family would be difficult. While he knew an education is important, the seventeen-year-old still wondered if enlisting in the army wasn't the best way for him to escape the trouble at home.Deb McEwan's military fiction novel, Unlikely Soldiers: Civvy to Squaddie, Book One, is a fascinating and enthralling look at Great Britain in the 1970s as experienced through the eyes of Guy, a North Yorkshire teen, and Mouse, a Welsh girl. I was immediately drawn into Guy's story and found myself experiencing the culture of the seventies, albeit from distant shores. McEwan's descriptions of the military training each of them go through are authentic and masterfully presented, and the reader can't help but get involved in the day-to-day challenges each of her characters face as they endure the rigors of basic training and find their ways into their chosen career paths. This military fiction novel is also a marvelous coming of age tale that includes a sympathetic portrayal of the problems faced by children from dysfunctional families and the issues facing girls and women at the time. I had a marvelous time reading Unlikely Soldiers and am looking forward to the next book in the series. It's most highly recommended.

From the Author I joined the British Army in 1979 and left in 2013. Unlikely Soldiers is a work of fiction, some of which is based on experience, the rest on my imagination - I'll leave it up to you to decide which is which. I hope you enjoy the story and would love to hear what you think.

About the Author Following thirty odd years in the British Army, Deb and her husband Allan decided to become weather refugees and settle in Cyprus. Throughout her life Deb has dabbled with writing. Her first book was 'Reindeer Dreams' - a quirky rhyming Christmas story for children featuring Barry the reindeer and his family. Her first grown-up books about aliens and unearthly spiders could be explained as off the wall. The Afterlife trilogy came next with a few 'Jason the Penguin' books in between. The first book in the current series 'Unlikely Soldiers', is set in 1970s Britain, with others to follow through the decades.Deb now spends her time writing, working part-time, avoiding housework and playing tour guide along with Allan. She tries to keep the pounds off by playing netball and long-distance walking. She loves hearing from readers and can be contacted via debmcewansbooksandblogs.com

Review of Unlikely Soldiers, Book #1 By Roy Murry, Author UNLIKELY SOLDIERSBOOK 1: Civvy to SquaddieDeb McEwanReviewed by Author Roy MurryThere are many reasons why people join the Army. I, for one, was drafted in the Vietnam era and reenlisted a month in, to get an education before going to Nam. Deb McEwan’s story a la novella follows the lives of a few who decide to join the British Army. Her series starter has all the elements a good book one should have. The three main characters stories are developed, their adventures are interesting, and you are left with a ‘What comes next’ need to know at the end.Guy, overwhelmed at home with his mother’s inconsideration and a new overbearing step father, wants freedom from his situation joins the Army to pursue a career that is contra to his father's. Michelle, who is confused with her home life, wants to follow the steps of her brother Graham and get out of the town they grew up in. All were not of age when joining.Ms. McEwan’s experience of thirty odd years in the British Army has given the reader a colorful look into what happens to a recruit in basic training. The three mentioned go through a learning curve that will have you laughing and rooting them on.Their personalities will lead the reader to want to follow their future love affairs and Army endeavors. Unlikely Soldiers, Book #2, should be as enjoyable as #1. It’s on my reading list.

McEwan masterfully and beautifully weaves the details of how lives are shaped By Ica Unlikely Soldiers by Deb McEwan, is a gripping military novel seen through the eyes of a Yorkshire teen. Guy comes from a dysfunctional family—his father is in prison, and his mother is shying away from her parental responsibilities, leaving Guy in charge of parenting his siblings. Michelle Warbutton is eager to see the world. Hers and Guy’s paths cross and as they say, the rest is history.Unlikely Soldiers is a quick but satisfying read. Through a mix of vividly descriptive scenes, emotional perceptiveness, some sexual tension and a measure of nail-biting suspense, McEwan masterfully and beautifully weaves the details of how lives are shaped.Unlikely Soldiers is a wonderful story filled with interesting characters that will have the reader stay up late, turning pages.

Knowledgeably Written From The Heart By Jennie Orbell Deb McEwan writes knowledgeably and from the heart in this, her latest novel - Unlikely Soldiers Book One (Civvy to Squaddie). Recalling the 1970s brought back nostalgic memories as I followed these young people through their steady growth. I found many 'emotions' sneaking out through the pages of this novel - there were times when I smiled and there were times when I didn't. Deb McEwan has dipped back brilliantly into her years of service and written a poignant story depicting those times clearly. This novel will appeal on different levels - and for different reasons. Well done Ms McEwan.
