From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—A boy tries desperately to get his three robots to sleep. He leads them into the bathroom for rotor brushing and shield cleaning and finally settles them and himself into bed. But just as the snappy rhyming text suggests the robots are fast asleep, a page turn repeatedly indicates otherwise. "BEEP! BEEP!" bleep the robots as they report "sensor aches," the need for a light and more oil and a coil, and problems with a loose belt or tight bolt. Finally, in utter frustration, the boy issues an ultimatum: "No more blipping!/Blinking-boinking!/Winking-whirring!/Squinking-oinking!" Of course, they ignore him with a last request: "a bedtime story." Then no more sounds ensue, for the robots have "finally put/their boy to sleep." The illustrations, created with pencil, watercolor, and digital paint, greatly extend the text. The chaotic bathroom spread shows a robot entangled in toilet tissue as another overflows the sink with bubbles and toothpaste and a third sprays water well beyond the bathtub. The boy first rests with a wary eye on the troublemakers, yawns in hopeful anticipation of quiet, and finally lies spread-eagled in exhaustion. Alert readers will notice that a mouse, which has its own bed in the room, joins in the antics from start to finish. VERDICT A delightful tale of bedtime role-reversal that sharp youngsters will appreciate.—Marianne Saccardi, Children's Literature Consultant, Greenwich, CT

The main character trying to get his own "kids" to go to sleep is a great way for my daughter and I to both relate to the problem, and somehow helps lower her resistance to going to sleep. The pictures are great and richly illustrated. We both love this book and have read it every night since we got it!

We received this book as a gift - great idea for any child with a vivid imagination and a love of robots. My 2 boys (age 5 and nearly 2) love the story. And not only at bedtime!

Funny, Cheerful, Well Drawn, and Pretty Sly By Pop Bop Picture books have gotten pricey enough that a book that's only interesting for one or two reads is going to have a hard time getting to the top of our to-get list. Not a problem, though, with this winning entry. The book hits all of the right notes. The kid, both as drawn and through his actions, is appealing. The three robots are a hoot. The drawing is colorful, energetic and expressive. Of most importance, the story is funny, makes sense, will amuse kids and adults, and is easy to follow. I don't know if kids will get that the story of three disruptive robots who drag out going to sleep is a joke on them, but they will certainly get the larger joke. Even if they just sort of get the gist the antics of the three robots will amuse. I was especially struck by the fact that the robots are clearly robots, yet were still loaded to the gills with personality. As a bonus the author has employed the effective strategy of adding a "secret" semi-hidden character, (the mouse), who appears somewhere on each page and who acts as a sort of Greek chorus reacting to the action. All of this means that every page has things to look at, jokes to laugh at, and details to examine. You could really take your time with this book and the rereadability factor is high. On the other hand, the text is sharp and clever and has a strong rhythm that carries the reader through the book. So this could also be a quick read if bedtime is running out.So, a fun, good humored, well written and well crafted addition to the bedtime shelf. A very nice find.
