Review Youngsters learn about the parable of the good Samaritan in this level two Good Samaritan-I Can Read book for developing readers which is about the second grade. The story begins with Jesus teaching the crowds until a man who wanted to test Jesus interrupted to ask Jesus 'what he needed to do to ensure 'eternal life.' Colorful, life-like illustrations of Jesus, the 'smart man' who asked questions, robbers and the Jewish man who was robbed, injured and left 'in the dirt at the side of the road' keep pages turning to learn what happens next. Colorful and humorous caricatures of the priest who crossed the road to avoid the man in the road and the temple helper who stepped over the injured man portray what Jesus meant when He said to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Bible verses from Luke 10:27, 36-37 and a brief summary of who Samaritans were complete this faith-based story. (The Midwest Book Review)

Lately I've been trying to build my collection of single Bible stories. I've also got a first-grader learning to read, so Zonderkids I Can Read book, Adventure Bible The Good Samaritan seemed like a good fit-- plus, it's one of my favorite parables. With only a sentence or two on each of its 32 pages, this slim paperback Level 2 reader kept my three sons' attentions.I liked that this version puts the familiar story into context as a parable Jesus told in response to a question about obtaining eternal life. I also liked that the text and illustrations of the priest and the Levite didn't portray them as "bad guys" but rather as people making the wrong choice because of fear and anxiety. This choice leaves the characters open for discussion. My son wanted to know, "Why did they just leave him there?" The book also ends with a simple description of the relationship between Jews and Samaritans, "In Bible times, the Jews and Samaritans did not get along. They were foreigners and did not know a lot about each other" (32). I felt this provided another jumping off point for relevant discussion.While I thought this easy reader was very nicely done, I asked my oldest what he thought of the book and has response was "Just OK." I think this was owing to the fact that his brain was completely filled with his current obsession over Lego Minecraft.... sigh! Though this is part of the Adventure Bible series, it is a quiet story meant for reflection. Just received in the mail By Anderson The Good Samaritan which is part of the Adventure Bible "I Can Read!" series is an exceptional example of a Bible story simplified for younger readers. My seven year old read through the story very easily and my five year old thoroughly enjoyed it, too. The illustrations in the story were vivid and colorful which was a drastic improvement from most children's Bible stories. In addition to this, the narrative was very faithful to the biblical text. The story even include the surrounding context for why Jesus told this parable. Ultimately, the book was great in provoking conversation between my two oldest boys about what it means to love the Lord our God and our neighbors.1 John 4: 20-2120 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.James 2: 14-1714 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? The Good Samaritan By T R D There are several books in the I Can Read! / Adventure Bible series, and The Good Samaritan is one of the newest releases. Our family does not own the Adventure Bible, NIV or the Adventure Bible for Early Readers, so I cannot compare these books to those (to see if the content is duplicated). We do, however, own both the Adventure Bible for Toddlers and the Adventure Bible Storybook, and I can tell you that the wording and illustrations are not duplicated across these three editions. The books in the I Can Read! / Adventure Bible series are worded with simpler phrasing and shorter sentences than you will find in the Adventure Bible Storybook.The Good Samaritan is a re-telling of the parable of the good Samaritan/neighbor which can be found in the Bible in Luke 10:25-37. I did find a couple inconsistencies/literary freedoms in this book, but overall I think it is well done and is easy to understand. The story is accompanied by big, colorful illustrations.At the end of The Good Samaritan is a page containing "People in Bible Times" (which has an illustration and description of a Samaritan and quotes Luke 10:27) and "Words to Treasure" (Luke 10:36-37).The I Can Read! / Adventure Bible series are categorized as reading level 2 ("Reading with Help") and the stories do not feel "choppy" like you might find in some learn-to-read books.
