Bring Walt Disney into Your Classroom

Award-winning teacher Shauna Pollock shares her innovative system for an "experimental prototype classroom of tomorrow" that you can apply today to your own classroom, and reap the educational benefits of teaching by the "Disney Way".

Walt Disney was a filmmaker, a theme park designer, and an innovator - but he was also an educator, and the same principles that make his films so watchable and his theme parks so enjoyable can be applied to the classroom. If Walt Disney had designed a curriculum, equally effective for students from kindergarten through high school, it would have looked a lot like Shauna Pollock's Creating Classroom Magic.

Shauna shows you how to:

  • Get kids to think and to dream just like the Disney Imagineers
  • Use lessons from the life of Walt Disney to impart valuable principles that kids won't forget
  • Incorporate technology into your teaching day, and empower kids to build relationships with their peers around the world
  • Adapt Disney's concepts of "show", "safety", and "courtesy" to bring even the dullest lessons to life, and tame even the rowdiest classroom
  • Plus, exclusive stories from Disney Legends like Rolly Crump, Bill "Sully" Sullivan, and Tom Nabbe about Walt's teaching techniques

By Sue This is the first book I have ever read that I did not feel had any extraneous words, sentences, paragraphs or chapters! As a veteran educator, the ideas in this book honor my own ideology by providing a framework for my thoughts and beliefs that can now be carried into discussions with other educators (and others) for further synthesis. This book can help a seasoned educator reimagine their practice and I would put it on a required reading list for all pre-service teachers. If you are already a student centered experienced educator, you will find yourself nodding in agreement as you read this incredibly well organized book but I promise that you will come away from the experience transformed in some way. I did not think I had the stamina to create any new magic this year but by having Shauna Pollock's words floating in my head, I was ready to seize an opportunity to make magic for a group of 75 students each day with one small "magical" gesture (even when I did not think I had it in me). This is an honest, unpaid, uninfluenced, 100% genuine rave of a book I really love. No hidden agenda! Shauna Pollock!!!! Your years of hard work have paid off in awesome book that will make a difference in the lives of many teachers and students!! ‪#‎YouMatter‬!

Tina Swithin's life was hit by a devastating storm in 2009. Tina had recently heard the words narcissistic personality disorder used to describe her then-husband by a therapist, yet she had no real understanding of how this disorder would turn her life upside down during a custody battle that spanned six years. In less than a year, Tina lost her home, businesses, cars, worldly possessions, and marriage. In one fell swoop, everything was gone.

In family court, Tina acted as her own attorney and finally, in 2014, secured peace and safety for her young daughters. A true "lemon to lemonade" story, Tina has rebuilt her life and thrives in the aftermath of what threatened to destroy her. Tina has found solace in sharing her internationally recognized story with others in her series, Divorcing a Narcissist. She has dedicated her life to advocacy and consulting with others facing the same battles.

In her new book, Rebuilding After the Storm, Tina takes her listeners through the steps to rebuild their lives and thrive postnarcissist. Dr. Craig Malkin, psychology instructor at Harvard Medical School, states, "If you need to start over, this is the woman you want holding your hand through the process."

Tina is the "go-to" girl for divorcing a narcissistic/sociopathic spouse. She has truly been a warrior and knows her stuff. This book, unlike her others, addresses the person who has managed to come through the fire and survive and faces the question of "Now what?" Very practical advice for ensuring that all the pain and suffering you have endured is NOT for naught and that you can indeed come out better and wiser!

I knew the transition was going to be hard. I didn't read this book until after my daughters "no more milkies party" I can say that she finds comfort in this book. The book shows the mommy nursing the baby to no longer nursing but doing other fun things instead. Which of course me and my daughter have nursed and do all those fun things like sing, dance and walk in the woods and she can relate.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but my son really does seem to like the book By JG I bought this book to read to my 22 month old son while weaning. I definitely agree that the illustrations could use some serious improvement, but my son really does seem to like the book. I don't know how helpful it was with the weaning, but he enjoys reading it and the concept of "Mama's milk is all gone" has really sunk in. It's been about a month now, and he doesn't reach to nurse anymore, and instead says "Mama's Milk is All Gone."There definitely should be more books on this topic as nursing past infancy becomes more common.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. GREAT book! I reluctantly decided to wean my 3 ... By Stacey GREAT book! I reluctantly decided to wean my 3 year old because I wasn't able to get pregnant and had the signs that nursing was affecting my cycle (delayed ovulation, short luteal phase). I read her the book and explained that "soon Mommy's milk will be all gone." She seemed to understand and accept it and now we're almost done weaning. The illustrations are a bit wonky but I love how they try to portray realistic toddler nursing. Book also talks about how the child has nursed since she was born but now she does other big kid activities with her Mama, how she can eat and drink if hungry and thirsty and she doesn't need to nurse for that like a baby does, and how Mama still loves her, etc. I looked at other books about weaning and they didn't seem very good. Highly recommended for talking about weaning with older toddlers!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Rich, powerful, subtle By Blake Malone A sensational read with not an ounce of sensationalism. That’s my overall take on this multidimensional tale of life in Southall, London. Most stories quite rightly use something for shock value – romance, action, intrigue, horror…. Within this book there are no less than half a dozen incidents/circumstances that could be expounded and sensationalised, but they are not. Their masterly subtle telling is what gives this tale such depth and dimension – there for us to wonder and imagine as we experience the real lives of these humble, ordinary people…. This was a cultural journey for me. I’m sure readers from within will enjoy the familiar surrounds. I found the experience enlightening – also interesting in the way love finds a way, even if the original union has been arranged…. To me this novel reads as understated. It’s impressive the way the author leaves the conclusions to us – the way she gives us just enough to inspire contemplation. It reads as absolutely real and true to life, and, as such, fascinating!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent tale of love, loss, and acceptance. By Avalon68 I saw this book listed somewhere and the premise sounded pretty good. I'll admit that I'm normally not a reader of these sorts of stories, but there was something about this one that seems interesting. I did have to step outside of my fantasy comfort zone to jump into a modern day world that is filled with lots of known things. We all have family, and I would imagine that most of us understand the complexities of family life. This story takes place in modern day Britain in an area called Southall and follows the life of two families and their interactions between each other and the world outside of their home Pakistan. I'll also admit that I don't know much about Pakistani life and only a little of it's culture so there was a lot that was foreign to me. What really hit me was that even though I don't know much about their culture, their problems are the same. That's what makes the story so familiar. In the beginning we follow Azra as she enters the U.K. for the first time to stay with her uncle after her mother dies and the struggles she has in this new land with a vastly different culture that the one she's use to. In a lot of was, I feel like she's the character that keeps us grounded to their struggle and their perspective as I feel like she balances the two cultures in a way that sets her apart from the other characters in the story. Along the way we meet the Mirza family. Abdul Mirza runs a clothing shop named Mina Fashions and his family is well known in the area of Southall. The interactions between both families is interesting and what kept me reading. I don't want to spoil the story, so I'll just say that there are lots of nice points that flesh out the characters including the surrounding mystery behind Azra's estranged husband, Abdul's son's love of Azra's daughter, and the thought process that goes into arranging a marriage. In closing, I'll salute Shaheen Darr for crafting a great story that is equally sad, happy, and thought provoking. If you have a love for stories that focus on love of life and the drama of finding our way in the world, then you'll enjoy reading Kismet.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A book that will follow you By Eleemosynary This novel follows the fates of the members of two Pakistani immigrant families in the United Kingdom. As an anglophile who married into an Indian family who emigrated to the U.S. before my husband was born, I was interested as soon as I saw the lovely cover. The deft treatment of the cultural conflicts between immigrant parents and children, as well as the tension between assimilation and cultural preservation, was both realistic and emotionally effective. I also enjoyed the way she structured the novel, allowing us to see the events from various points of view. The narratives are quite touching, exploring such themes as romance, betrayal, heartbreak, depression, tragedy, remorse, redemption, and, of course, kismet. The idea of fate is a fascinating one to me, one that sometimes allows people to make sense of the events of their lives, and one that carries through all the storylines.Kismet is a lovely book, one I highly recommend for its skillful writing, lyrical descriptions, emotional impact, and charming characters. It is a book that will follow you out the door, like the smell of your mother’s house.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Informative, insightful and critically-needed views on education technology trends By Cary K. In the final keynote of The Revenge of the Monsters Of Education, Audrey Watters identifies two missing elements from the field of education technology: criticism and care. To me, the immense power of Watters' ideas can be found in those two words. In The Revenge of the Monsters of Education, Watters presents the often-overlooked negative implications of lauded education technology trends like automation, algorithms and personalization. She also boldly examines the effects of sexism, imperialism and systemic inequality within education technology on learners of all ages. While some of the keynotes have talking points that overlap, each piece brought me unique, provoking insights. Best of all, Watters' keynotes are well-researched and humorous, making them both informative and enjoyable, even if you don't agree with all of her views. Definitely worth the few dollars to download and support her work.

They are early 20s, just starting out their lives, and their immaturity really shows in this one. That isn't awful in a book, especially new adult, just be sure that is what you want to read.Devlin runs a restaurant his parents used to own, passed to him. His dad somehow owed money for gambling debts, and those debts fell to Devlin. He works for the prior bookie through his restaurant to pay his debt yet also lives the high life in a condo and expensive car. That was an improbable setup for me to accept, but on I went in this one. Rena is 23 and had something tragic happen to her in high school. This thing apparently is preventing her from moving on, I guess, because not only doesn't she date (more understandable), but she seems to not do anything else like attend college. She does have a job, recently starting work at the hero's restaurant. My biggest problem in this book is I absolutely could not figure out why one character liked the other. She would chase him most of the time while he said and did mean things. And then he would give her a little hope and then go back to being a jerk. This went on throughout the entire book pretty much to the very end. Why? I just didn't get the appeal at all, so this gets 3 stars from me. The writing wasn't bad, and the plot just wasn't my cup of tea.My thanks to the publisher via Netgalley for an advanced copy to read and review.

I knew damn well that Melinda, or any of the other females in this restaurant, would trade an ovary to be under Devlin's intense blue-eyed stare for fifteen minutes. To be under him, period.”“He'd be less successful at getting money for Sonny given that he looked about as trustworthy as a used car salesman. I blamed the pencil-slim suit pants. Never trust a man whose junk you could see at a glance.”“That's why I no longer did 'bad' things. Bad things led to worse things. A wave of regret licked at my insides like fire. Nothing new there.”“Every mom had her own version of 'the look,' and when a daughter sees it, she knows, without words, what it means. Hers always said the same thing: You've been single too long.”“The idea of someone so good wanting someone like me jolted my heart into a new rhythm. Like Frankenstein's monster, alive after being cold and dead – stray, unfeeling limbs brought together for renewed purpose.”“Something about the way she reacted to me hinted that we were kindred spirits. Impossible. She was Red Riding Hood to my Big Bad Wolf.”“I want you, Rena. I haven't stopped wanting you. Want is flowing through me like lava.”My Review:Jessica Lemmon has mad skills. This is my second time reading her and am already grieving the idea of having to move on to the next on my list as I am grooving on her style. Her characters are original and unique, while also flawed and real, and not ones you would expect to be heroic, but they are. Their halos may be tarnished and sideways - due to the small set of horns - but the glow is there, if you look for it. I didn't expect to love the player, or for the good girl to be a reformed party-girl who had self-inflected goodness on herself out of guilt and grief. I was entertained and intrigued by this story from beginning to end, and the steamy bits had me positively gasping. Mad skills!

Well lesson well and truly learned LOLFighting for Devlin has intriguing characters where events have shaped them and placed them behind self-imposed barriers. However, I have to say I didn’t fully connect with the characters and therefore, it is this aspect that affected my overall enjoyment of the story. Jessica does build an incredible plot that is both fast paced and thought-provoking so it was just my personal connection to the characters that was the main problem :)Told in dual first person narrative with alternating chapters from Rena, the ‘good girl’ waitress and Devlin, the ‘bad boy’ restaurant owner. However, I did feel it was Devlin’s character development that was the heart of the story.Incidents on both sides are hinted at through the narrative allowing the reader to jump to conclusion and therefore, fear the worse. So when the revelations happen they do feel a little anti-climatic following the dramatic build-up. Especially with the way Rena is filled with misplaced guilt and regret. Personally, I found Rena a little immature and naive, While Devlin seems to be caught in a life to pay for his fathers follies. With links to organised crime and gambling addiction being woven into the plot. The narrative takes into consideration the addiction gambling can cause – the continual quest for the next big win dominating all rational thought. While I have no experience with gambling it was easily to relate it to the personal experience I have had with other forms of addiction, seeing it control a person’s life to the exclusion of everything else. For me, Fighting for Devlin focuses on how events in your life can freeze you into being a shell of who you actually are. It took being together for Devlin and Rena to melt the ice holding them in place so they are able to move forward together.
