Indulgence is a Trinbagonian-inspired fictional delicacy, sautéed in seductive herbs and spices for a raunchy, sizzling, mouth-watering experience. It is a compelling story which takes an up-close-and-personal look at the character, Fortie Pickford and some of her friends, who are all on the threshold of mid-life crises. It depicts their relationship innuendos, their secret fears, uncertainties and sexual indiscretions, for all to see. Set in the small twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the story begins with a dark journey into the bowels of a mega-continent to meet forty-something year-old Celia. To connect the dots, the story continues to unravel in Trinidad and Tobago, revealing a systemic plot of lies, deceit and infidelity skilfully interwoven into the narrative fabric of the novel. Drizzled with suspense and drama, the book also opens up the reader to a whole new underground world of human trafficking, internet dating, cybercrime and their influence on the 40something year-old characters in the novel. Lifeless, type-written characters come to life, and are transformed into colourful, believable people you either love or hate. But be warned...it’s like a roti and a red Solo. But with plenty, plenty pepper! Don’t just take my word for it.... Bon Appétit...

'[P]erhaps the best analysis of the English-only movement in the US and the ramifications worldwide of language policies favouring English ...It displays a dazzling grasp of the many meanings of language and the politics that underlie language policy and educational discourse.' Stanley Aronowitz, City University of New York 'In the present political climate, racism and classism often hide behind seemingly technical issues about English in the modern world. The Hegemony of English courageously unmasks these deceptions and points the way to a more humane and sane way to discuss language in our global world.' James Paul Gee, University of Wisconsin, Madison The Hegemony of English succinctly exposes how the neoliberal ideology of globalization promotes dominating language policies. In the United States and Europe these policies lead to linguistic and cultural discrimination while, worldwide, they aim to stamp out a greater use and participation of national and subordinate languages in world commerce and in international organizations such as the European Union. Democracy calls for broad, multi-ethnic participation, and the authors point us toward more effective approaches in an increasingly interconnected world.

It is profound in its insight into the institutionalized racism in our country. Bilingualism is an asset, yet our educational system doesn't see it that way unless it is the dominant culture adding (as opposed to subtracting) Spanish. I have read this book over and over and over!

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the best book out there on the subject. By Rereader The subject matter of Macedo's book is important and he brings up lots of good points and issues, but the tone he uses, sometimes vitriolic is better suited to an article than an entire book. It also suffers from a lack of focus for some of the issues. A person can gain from reading this book, but there are better books out there about the subject.

3 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Very Illuminating and Critical By William Pulgarin In one of Gingrich's most recent speeches, he "equated bilingual education...with the `language of living in the ghetto.'" While this argument is fed in snippets to the general public, the larger implications of such absurd rhetoric goes largely unquestioned. In "The Hegemony of English," the authors probe into some of the deeper and more poignant issues regarding the debate over bilingualism. They point to the fact that some of our policies go against the avalanche of research that supports bilingualism. If the education of our children is the most important issue, then why are we not listening to the educational research? Why are we still striving to create a monolingual society despite the fact that there are many positive aspects to being bilingual? Check out Language, Power, and Pedagogy: Bilingual Children in the Crossfire (Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, 23) for more information regarding bilingual education. Not the best reading in the world, but definitely something that educators should be knowledgeable about. It is short book with a deep and important message.

Dewey Bob, by Judy Schachner

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—For a young raccoon, Dewey Bob has loads of character. Despite a plethora of hobbies and amusing predilections, from collecting buttons to being "as clean as the beans are green," and a knack for "decoratin'," Dewey Bob finds himself lonely when he strikes out on his own. Fortunately, his inventiveness comes in handy when he meets a kitten who can't walk, scoring him a friend. With fresh colors, handwritten lettering, and lush textures reminiscent of Melissa Sweet's work, the mixed-media illustrations fairly glow with endearing whimsy. Inspirational quotes and lively poems are integrated deftly into the images. However, the charm of the illustrations doesn't fully extend to the text. The story has a few too many ideas in it to fill out a traditional story arc, and the writing is a tad rambly. The down-home country dialect may delight listeners with its playful phrasing but may also pose challenges as a read-aloud. VERDICT This sweet, homespun (if rather long-winded) story will appeal to Schachner's many Skippyjon Jones fans and will introduce a new character to the canon.—Erin Reilly-Sanders, University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI

Review "With his tiny, earnest eyes, and huge head, Dewey is downright adorable, and Schachner’s skillful layering of watercolor and pencil textures with photo collage gives the story a homespun, scrapbooked feel." —Publishers Weekly“The mixed-media illustrations fairly glow with endearing whimsy… This sweet, homespun…story will appeal to Schachner’s many Skippyjon Jones fans and will introduce a new character to the canon.” —School Library Journal “The illustrations are captivating…they are a joy to sit and gaze at, making the story so much more enjoyable. All ages can enjoy Dewey Bob, his antics, and his adventure.” —School Library Connection "Schachner’s folksynarrative, full of charming couplets in speech bubbles from Dewey, is well matched by her delightfullyjumbled collage illustrations, combining snippets of paper and photographs with soft, gentle watercolorfigures. Little ones will love poring over Dewey’s collections to find treasures, and the heartwarming text...makes for a spirited read-aloud."  —Booklist

About the Author Best known for her Skippyjon Jones series, Judy Schachner has illustrated many of her own stories, including the much-lovedThe Grannyman and its companion book, Bits & Pieces. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I love picture books that explore different perspectives and the broadening ... By Celeste Pewter I love picture books that explore different perspectives and the broadening of one's world view, and that's exactly what you get with the delightful Dewey Bob.Judy Schachner introduces us to Dewey Bob, a young racoon who has outgrown his family pants. He sets out on his own, moving into an old oak tree and collecting objects and random bric-a-brac along the way. However, Dewey Bob soon realizes that while the experience of collecting objects is lovely, he would love to have a friend as well...Schachner's story is a melodic tale, full of whimsical rhyming sentences that sounds like singing when read out loud. Those melodic sentences are made even better by the wonderful themes of the story; Dewey Bob's journey is both an adventure story for a young raccoon setting to find his way out in the world, but also a tale about getting to know yourself.Schachner shows that even though Dewey Bob is continuing to enjoy collecting and cleaning the items that he's found, just having physical objects isn't enough. He also feels lonely and would like a friend. It's a subtle reminder that it's okay to explore new interests, including new friends. And while Dewey Boby's attempts to get friendship have unexpected results, he eventually does make a friend that reinforces the idea that some of the best friendships are built on people who genuinely understand each other's quirks, and love without agenda.Schachner's story is accentuated by her colorful drawings. As another reviewer pointed out, Schachner utilizes a variety of art materials for each picture, which not only matches the theme of the story, but helps each page vibrate with energy and joy.Bottom line: This is a great book about learning what you want for yourself, and how to be a good friend.

But when he leaves home and tries to collect friends, he learns that “no collection is complete without a friend.” I think I most enjoyed the clever and colorful illustrations, which feature watercolors, inks, pencils, torn-out printed materials, and other collage elements, to create artistic illustrations. The artwork mirrors the story, as the raccoon takes his newly found-objects and transforms them into sculptured artworks of his own. Yet it’s only when he discovers a lonely, handicapped kitten, and uses his treasures to create a sort of wheelchair that he finally finds a friend. It’s a lovely book which my children and I enjoy looking through again and again, discovering new delights each time. The hard-bound book itself is exceptionally well-made, with premium printing on the dust jacket and throughout. Further, Dewey Bob includes an audio CD, which I play in the car while the author’s gentle Southern accent adds richness to the lovely tale, and my daughter pages along in the book.

I have a family of raccoons that visit my backyard wildlife habitat, and I just had to have this book, pre-ordered and worth the wait. You just never know what those buttons you collect in a jar may ultimately find a use for in the most unique ways.

By Sharon Richmond Readers will proclaim that "Fire in an Amber Sky" by Addison Moore is... M.A.G.N.I.F.I.C.E.N.T!!!!!!!!The Lionheart and O'Conner's return more devilishly dangerous and wickedly sweet with Lincoln and Macy as the starring roles. Linc and Sin sizzle and ignite, in more ways than one, in this 3rd book of the Burning Through Gravity Series.Lincoln Lionheart is one ruthless guy in the boardroom, and one handsome devil to boot, and when it comes to his family, he is very, very protective. He is someone you don't want to cross. But behind that stern persona is someone who is so full of love to give it, yet he hides it. He is trying to forget the past, from what happened..with Jackie.Macy O'Conner is 3 days away from her wedding, helping her mother with some final arrangements when a certain voice catches her attention. It's Leah, her step sister, whom, to put it mildly, is one annoying piece of work. When Macy rounds the corner to see what Leah's up to, never did she expect to see Leah in a lip lock with her fiance Bradley. To assume the wedding is off is true. Time for a new start.Macy decides she needs toss out her 'Old Me' and start with "New Me" life, and to forget about what happened those few weeks ago. She takes her mom's offer to go and intern at her Uncle's company, Jinx Enterprises. a Techno Type of company. On her first day she is about to get the shock of her life when she is mistaken for a 9:00 appointment with the devil himself Lincoln Lionheart. And she just might be right.Lincoln is furious that his appointment is late, he has a board meeting with the O'Conners at 10 and since he missed the gym this am, he has his secretary call a call girl. When her turns around and sees Macy, red hair and all, he is doubly pissed. Her teasing will test his will, but he explodes when he discovers shes a virgin! Sparks are about to fly. That is just more or less the beginning of what happens after that mistaken identity episode. Throw in a bunch of crazy siblings, step and 1/2, a newly discovered brother, who may be just a rat, a past that threatens to rise again, a traitor amongst them and you have a most gripping story. This is one book that will have you screaming at anyone who interrupts you while reading it.Hate will become Love...Lies become Truth...A Family once divided will be joined as one..A must read for anyone..I loved this one the best..I was graciously gifted an ARC of this book for an honest review..Touche Addison Moore..Brilliant

By Tabby (Tantalizing Reviews) Addison Moore proves again why she remains on the top of my authors to read. As with all her books Fire in an Amber Sky does not disappoint in the least.Fire in an Amber Sky focuses on Macy O'Conner and Lincoln 'Linc" Lionheart. If you have read the rest of the series you know Linc (if you haven't I highly recommended them.) He's a playboy, one to never settle down. Only we never understood why...until now. I won't divulge what happened in his past to break him but it is heartbreaking and has impacted his life in a major way.Macy O'Conner is determined to escape her past after being done wrong by her ex-fiance and stepsister. She moves to start a new life, as a new her. A person who doesn't get walked all over and far from the good girl she was in her past.Linc and Macy find themselves in quite a hot situation when first meeting. He has a rule of no redheads but that is a rule he is willing to break because he finds Macy irresistible...until he finds out Cannon blood runs through her veins, and that is a no-fly zone for him as his family and been infiltrated by the Cannon's already. You cannot control fate and you cannot control who your heart is drawn to. Soon Macy and Linc find themselves embarking on a sexual, emotional, heart-wrenching journey of finding out who they are, moving on from the past and figuring out what they want. Can Linc get over Macy being a Cannon? Can Macy move on from her past and survive Linc's secrets? Find out by reading this amazing book.Addison Moore delivers in true Addison Moore fashion with her secret reveals that leave your jaw laying at your feet and your heart in your throat. Secrets that can make or break what could be an epic love that grips you until the very last line and leaves you wanting more.

Hot and Steamy with an air of deception, Lies, and Overcoming the humps By Keri marie The only down fall to this book is some say you need to sleep, eat, and you should probably work if your adult, but this book made it so hard to ADULT it as I say. Addison takes you into the world of the Lionheart and O'Conner/Cannon world. We are pulled into a world where the ones you think you can trust and count on are the ones that can hurt you the most. Macy is ready to say I do but her step sister and Fiance had different plans and brought her world crumbling down around her. In the aftermath of the deception she lands herself at Jinx working for her Uncles the Cannon brothers, and she happens to stumble into Lincoln Lionhearts office her very first day. From that first steamy meeting things only heat up and are challenged from unheard of brothers, a wicked step sister, to them losing it all. Lincoln feels he is a damaged man that he would never be able to love or loved after his tragic past, but his Sin shows him just how wrong this complicated man is. If you love romance, with some deception, mystery, and even some steamy moments in there I highly recommend this book. The whole series is amazing you can read this as a stand alone but I find it like pringles once you pop you can stop. I just cant get enough of these characters and the writing skills are amazing!

She has ordinary people responding to tragic events, set in contemporary Australia, by the beach. Title is great, cover is too (again), a mature woman dealing with the loss of her son, a husband gripped by grief unable to reach out, another teenage boy trying to deal with the tragedy. Then a gay brother, a teenage girl pregnant by her lost son, a lesbian couple, elderly parents who don't understand, a brief separation and a younger man making advances. Jan finds a more fulfilling life that being a socialite, charity mum and tennis-player. Hope I haven't given the whole plot away, but I would recommend this book. Can't wait for the third book of the Oregon coast series.

By Brenda Telford Manly Beach in Sydney had always been a place of joy; a day by the surf gave Jan Turnbull, her husband Graham and sons Simon and Andy the freedom to enjoy the sparkling waves, the bright sunshine and much laughter with family and friends. But when a tragic accident took the life of Jan and Graham’s eldest son Simon, the lives of the family changed immediately and irrevocably. Grief overtook the three remaining family members – they all reacted differently, but the shock Jan felt when, instead of comfort from her beloved husband, she received coldness and blame, turned her life upside down. Living in the family home was no longer viable…Jan’s sister Anna was there for her – but she knew living in the old family home wasn’t an option for long. Anna was newly married to Marcus and she didn’t want to encroach. So when a housesitting situation became possible, Jan accepted and moved into a luxury home overlooking the harbour. But her grief was ongoing and always with her – compounded by the fact of not seeing fifteen year old Andy. Was he confused? Did he miss her? She needed something to occupy her time; to stop her thinking so much. Could she get a job? She was on the wrong side of fifty – what could she possibly do?As Jan slowly and painfully moved ahead with her life, there were more problems to face; more stresses to handle. With each shock that hit, she wondered if she would ever feel happiness again. She was struggling to see if her family could regain some sense of normality in the future; but mending broken threads was paramount.I thoroughly enjoyed Broken Threads by Aussie author Maggie Christensen. This novel tells the story of the intense feelings of grief and the different ways people cope. The ongoing sadness was there, but there was also a fierce determination to find happiness again – to bring her family back together if it was the last thing Jan did. Filled with well-drawn characters, Broken Threads is a book I have no hesitation in recommending highly.

Fans of Maggie Christensen will not be disappointed with her new book By Nene Davies Fans of Maggie Christensen will not be disappointed with her new book, Broken Threads. In fact, they are going to be delighted! Not only do we catch a glimpse into the life of Anna, our favourite from Band Of Gold, we spend the whole story in the company of her sister Jan.Maggie takes us into the life of a mature woman having to deal with an array of confronting situations, most devastating of which is her terrible grief at losing somebody precious. Her pain is compounded by the reactions of those around her - especially those she loves the most - which leave her feeling isolated and shunned.Bravely, she squares up to these challenges and sets out to forge her own path. Her journey is littered with the unexpected and as we follow her through this labyrinth of problems, we cannot help but admire her dogged determination to be true to herself and her family. If you loved Band Of Gold, you are going to love Broken Threads too. Guaranteed!

Can dancing mend Ruth's broken heart?

Ruth Henderson has moved back in with her parents--something she swore she would never do, especially not at the age of thirty-three. But in the face of the mountain of debt left by her late partner, and the fact that her teenage daughter, Maggie, is expressing her grief through acts of delinquency, there was really only one option.

Returning to a house Ruth swore never to set foot in again is bad enough. Add to this an estranged father, whirlwind mother, and David--the boy next door who broke her heart--and it is little wonder Ruth can barely make it out of bed.

But then, reunited with her old friend Lois, Ruth is persuaded to go along to a monthly girls' night. Here she meets a bunch of incredible women and for the first time since leaving home at eighteen, Ruth begins to make some genuine friends.

She also has her first ever date--with the charming Dr. Carl Barker. However, after a disastrous dinner, and an upset Maggie still struggling with her father's death, Ruth promises her daughter she won't go out with any other men. A promise she quickly regrets when David, the boy next door, asks her to dance. . .

Bad enough that she got accidentally pregnant at eighteen to someone who wasn’t the love of her life, but now Fraser has died and she’s had to sell their house and return to her small Nottinghamshire home town, and live with her parents. And she’s got a rebellious teenage daughter, Maggie, a mountain of debt, and a fifteen-year-old rift with her father.Despite her low opinion of herself, Ruth is clever—a maths prodigy who grew up in a family of champion ballroom dancers, and who never felt accepted by anyone except next-door-neighbour David. Her only other childhood friend was Lois, who was even more of a social misfit than Ruth. So I Hope You Dance is the story of Ruth finding love and acceptance from family, from friends, and from herself.I Hope You Dance is written in first person point of view, so we spend the whole novel inside Ruth’s head, which gives it more of a YA or British Chick-Lit feel rather than the traditional Christian romance some readers might be expecting. The Britishness also comes through in the Christian elements—lightweight and more told through the subtext than in-your-face preachy (an unfortunate tendency of some US Christian novels). It’s definitely more women’s fiction than romance, as the focus of the novel is on Beth’s personal growth (in an understated British way) than on the romance. Although there is a little romance . . . although that goes very wrong before it goes right, and adds an unexpected element of suspense to the novel.I Hope You Dance is Beth Moran’s second novel. I thought her first, Making Marion, was excellent and I Hope You Dance is at least as good. Possibly better. Recommended. Thanks to Lion Fiction and NetGalley for providing a free ebook for review.

While I didn't understand everything in the book due to cultural differences, I found the characters and plot to be simply charming. I was eager to go back for round two with Moran's latest release, I Hope You Dance.I Hope You Dance is, in a word, delightful. While Ruth deals with serious issues like debt, stalking, teenage rebellion, and family drama, the story never feels heavy. I think much of this is due to the supporting characters--colorful women who stand by Ruth's side through thick and thin and whose personalities bring joy and humor amidst the drama. These characters are so vividly drawn that I felt as though I knew them. While I Hope You Dance contains romance (some from rather unexpected places), and of course the reader wants to know if Ruth and David will find their way back to one another, I found myself caring far more about Ruth's friendships than I did about her love life. In fact, I was more concerned about Ruth's friend Ana Luisa's romance than I was about Ruth's. I would love to revisit Ruth's world in the future to check back in with her friends!I Hope You Dance is not inspirational fiction in the way we perceive it in the United States. A few characters swear, and while church plays a major role in the story, a relationship with Christ is not emphasized. I'm not saying either of those things means you shouldn't read the book (in fact, I hope you do read it!); I just think readers should know what they're getting and not getting when they buy this book.I loved I Hope You Dance, and I look forward to Moran's next book. 4-1/2 stars.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Offering a fresh perspective on people and places and culture, it made me laugh, sigh, and think. Although it is a bit different from what most American readers expect from Christian fiction, this novel gets a recommended read designation from me.After vowing never to return, Ruth Henderson is back at home with her parents following a fifteen year absence. With her is her troubled fourteen year old daughter, Maggie, and a suitcase load of regret, grief, embarrassment and guilt. But Ruth discovers that you really can go home when you are surrounded by your slightly off-kilter family and brutally honest, but loving friends.I Hope You Dance led to many chuckles and a few laugh out loud moments as Ruth relates her new life back in the town where she grew up. Strong, witty, and at times, a bit irreverent writing combined with slightly quirky, yet extremely likable characters made this book hard to put down. There is a balance as Moran’s humor allows the light-hearted moments to soften some very difficult events — there are a few intense scenes with a seriously creepy stalker. Ruth’s search for peace and forgiveness is helped along by women dedicated to God and each other. Truth spoken in love is really lived out in this book. Please note: although this book is marketed as Christian, I Hope You Dance doesn’t fit the mold we are used to here in the United States. There is some profanity (at least what is termed as such in the South) and the characters drink (though not to excess). While this did not bother me, I know some readers could be offended. If you are one of those, then perhaps this book is not for you. But if you like a decidedly British twist to your humor, characters that are real, relatable and you want as your own best friends, and a story that touches your heart, then I Hope You Dance could be right up your street!Recommended.Audience: adults.(Thanks to Kregel and Lion Hudson for a review copy.
