Every other penguin in the colony knows about his exciting inventions and his feats of strength and bravery. What many of those penguins don't realize is that while Archie may be a daredevil, he has one very large fear: he'll do anything to avoid the water and the strange creatures who lurk in the briny deep. When Archie is dunked into the ocean and then swallowed by a whale, he finds that swimming can actually be fun. And those "strange" creatures give him supportive advice instead of eating him up. Rash tells this tale through comic book panels and dialogue. This choice suits Archie's story perfectly. While the penguins in the colony look up to Archie, it isn't until he faces his fear that he really becomes part of the community. And all of the marine life support him—there's lots of cheering from everyone (including the hilarious mayor) for each invention. This book has saturated, vivid color in the panels. A fun read-aloud with a positive message By Janet Hamilton Summary: On the one hand, Archie’s afraid of swimming with the other penguins because of all the strange creatures that lurk on the briny deep. On the other hand, he’s got more courage than anyone else in his attempts to fly (shooting himself from a giant slingshot, leaping off an ice-brick wall with a pair of wings strapped on, etc.). The other penguins applaud his bravery, but what they really want is for Archie to join them on Iceberg Nine for a fish fry, and the only way to get there, as far as they’re concerned, is to swim. Finally, Archie tries firing himself over to the iceberg on a rocket, which melts the ice and strands him in the ocean. He’s in for a few surprises out there in the briny deep, but the bottom line is, he discovers he loves swimming. Ages 3-7.Pros: This would be a fun read-aloud, with its cartoon-bubble dialog and entertaining penguin characters. There’s even a good lesson included about overcoming fears and trying new things.Cons: Archie’s rocket fuel is probably not helping the polar ice cap situa

Funny for parents and kids By BrittyMama If you are the kind of person who likes to pepper your bedtime stories with multiple voices, you will love this book- it is very funny and just begging to be read out loud. Archie (our daredevil penguin) is known for having quite the adventurous personality- except unbeknownst to his friends he is actually afraid of the water and the strange creatures who lurk in the briny deep. When there is a party on another iceberg, he decides to be creative in how he gets there- to try and avoid the water at all costs. His friends and the mayor watch his attempts with anticipation but ultimately, things do not go as planned. He eventually learns a tough lesson in facing your fears and trying new things.As a parent, I always appreciate children's books that appeal to both audiences and this one does that for sure.

But he's trying to keep the one thing he is afraid of a secret from his penguin friends: the water and swimming.They guess anyway and invite Archie to go to another shore for a fishfry.Archie suggests maybe he'll fly there instead of swim. When his flying skills leave a little bit to be desired, Archie falls short of the fishfry and lands in the briny water. Will the underwater animals and fish give Archie some suggestions on how to swim?There's a lot of thought and speech bubbles in this story which might make it more difficult to read to a class, but fun to read together up close with your child. If your child likes daredevils and Penguins, they will love Archie. Vivid colors in the illustrations. 4.5 stars
