Surprise Baby: The Colourful Life, by Naomi Kissiedu-Green

About the Author I am a wife and mother who relishes bringing my ideas and passion to life. In my capacity as mother and qualified childcare worker I have been disheartened to discover the paucity of resources that cater to multicultural families in Australia. It can be a struggle to find books to read to your children that depict multicultural families – or even families of other cultures. I honestly wish there were more representations of cultures and mixed race people in the media. So I wrote this book for multiracial families like mine, and other families who want to embrace diversity and acceptance. It’s important for children to see themselves as they develop a sense of community and belonging. It is our responsibility – as parents and as a nation – to make children feel included not just in their home, but in the classroom and in life. Racial and ethnic group differences have a significant impact on children's social development. Although the impact varies according to age and ethnicity, it is important for children to take pride in their heritage. I hope to shine a spotlight on the issue of mixed race with my Kobi books, and offer something to multiracial families with which they can identify.

As mixed race children looking to go to school as an ethnic minority in Australia, this book explains that the differences in skin colour is only skin deep (for lack of better words). Telling the story from the perspective of a young child ensures that my children can relate to the main character of Kobi.

Historium: Welcome to the Museum, by Jo Nelson

From School Library Journal Gr 4–8—This museum-style exhibition of world culture goes beyond simply covering the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian worlds by encompassing southern African, Polynesian, and Hopewell cultures. The work begins with a general introduction to archaeology and provides a full-spread time line for reference. An index cites the museum locations of the depicted artifacts. The strength of this work is the gorgeous exhibits, presented in full color on oversize pages. Each exhibit begins with a brief overview of a specific culture. The presentation is less cluttered than that of DK's popular "Eyewitness" series, as most pages contain no more than six items. Readers will discover household articles, such as Pueblo jars, as well as large-scale features, including Roman mosaics. Thorough captions provide context. Wilkinson's illustrations of the various artifacts are photorealistic, with exacting detail. Only a few statuary pieces come off as obvious illustrations. The objects stand out on the pages, the backgrounds set in bold, solid colors. The chapters, called "Galleries," are arranged by continent, and the various exhibitions are further broken down into culture groups. In certain galleries, which focus on precise historical periods, the cultural groups are presented chronologically; in the case of America, the section on the Olmec is followed by the Maya and then the Aztecs. This book accomplishes a difficult goal: providing a high-interest visual experience that also has informational depth. VERDICT A beautiful addition to any elementary or middle school library, this work is the closest readers will come to attending a museum without leaving home.—Jeffrey Meyer, Mt. Pleasant Public Library, IA

What a totally awesome book that is filled with information about historical artifacts from various cultures. This over-sized, coffee table book is designed for older children (and adults too) and the wonderful illustrations and factual material will open up some of the wonders of archeology. The entire family will love paging through this volume...it is like having a museum in your living room. This is an EXCEPTIONAL book and one every school library should have a copy of!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Antiquities Museum in Book Form - Wonderful Illustrations and a Worldwide Focus ... By delicateflower152 “Historium: Welcome to the Museum” is a museum of ancient artifacts in book form. “Curated” by Richard Wilkinson and Jo Nelson, this exquisitely illustrated volume presents an overview of the diversity and beauty of man’s creative efforts. Presented in six galleries, each one representing a specific continent, the text focuses on the artifacts of several countries or regions located in the featured continent.Following the introduction or “Entrance” and a short article answering the question “What is Archaeology?” a two-page illustration shows a timeline on which artifacts have been chronologically superimposed. This section provides an overview of the content of “Historium” and leads into the more specific “Galleries” (chapters) of the text. Each of the Galleries consists of a brief discussion and a key to the illustrations shown on the facing page, designated as a plate. Individual discussions begin by showing the name of the artifact, the approximate date it was created, and then the brief but informative text. The illustrations alone make “Historium” a volume that anyone who appreciates artwork will want to add to their personal library. Softly colored pictures have the appearance of hand-drawn pen and ink illustrations that were common in journals during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The drawings are detailed, having depth and dimension. Printed on heavy, ivory or aged ivory-colored pages, the entire volume seems to be a vintage book that one might discover in an attic or antique emporium. The volume concludes with an subject index, an index of the museums and collections housing the artifacts, a brief overview of the Curators, and finally, image credits as some illustrations were based on photographs. “Historium” is a beautiful volume that is suitable for display as a coffee table book – it measures approximately 14 7/8” X 10 7/8” – or as a book for anyone, regardless of age, fascinated by history and antiquities. In light of the destruction of many ancient treasures, this is a significant book. It may serve as an introduction to and a means of preserving the memory of those artifacts for future generations. Five stars!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Examining Ancient Cultures Through Artifacts By tvtv3 The HISTORIUM is basically an archaeology book for older elementary - middle school students presented in the form of a "museum book." The book includes pictures and write ups on over 20 different cultures and more than 100 different artifacts. HISTORIUM is a very well developed book, both in presentation and content. However, it is not something every student will enjoy. It makes a great tool for homeschooling as well as a great gift for a student who has a sincere interest in archaeology or social studies.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very helpful guide! By Ann This is an excellent book for those interested in the Vikings and the series Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. I knew nothing about this subject. This is very early history. I do not remember studying anything like this is school. After reading this book, I have an inkling of what was going on. There is sections called “Things to take away” that help you understanding what is going on in the series. For example, in order to understand Norse poetry, you need to know your mythology. I enjoyed reading about the Viking Culture in all the areas throughout Europe. I do recommend this book because of the detailed information linking it to the series.

Cool Companion for the Historically Minded Child By Zaabaa Recently I had to buy a gift for a young nephew, and I became aware of a new series called Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan. Being interested in Norse mythology and viking culture myself, I decided to buy the first couple as a gift with hopes my nephew would become interested as well. I soon realized that the books were not too historical/thorough, not that I expected them to be, so I went looking for books about the culture itself, and came across this book. I bought it and am pleasantly surprised at its readability and depth. The Unofficial Companion talks a lot about Norse/Viking culture as a whole before getting into the actual myths, and it paints it in a really positive light. It is clear the author has a deep respect for, and interest in, this ancient culture, and it's refreshing to hear about Vikings without reference to pillaging, looting, and all that other nasty stuff. After introducing the culture Aperlo goes on to include a collection of Norse myths and an encyclopedia of heroes, gods, and monsters. Each myth is well presented, includes illustrations, and is nicely laid out. The encyclopedia is also well displayed, and it's easy to follow and find who you are looking for, and how they relate to the mythology and culture as a whole. I'm going to have a hard time giving this book to my nephew, but I know he will enjoy it and gain a deeper understanding of Viking culture and myths in the process.

I read through this book before I sent it to him, and I admit- I completely fell in love! I always loved mythology growing up, and the magic has not left these stories as an adult. The book opens with an engaging and interesting description and history of Vikings, complete with really beautiful illustrations. The book continues with information about Norse mythology. I’ve never read much about Norse mythology and I fell in love. The stories are timeless and fascinating, and the author keeps the information fresh and entertaining. The dialogue is quick and often very funny, and the stories are kid-friendly while still being appealing to adults. After the stories, there is an encyclopedia of Norse mythology. I really liked this section to see more information about the characters mentioned in the stories. It’s so fun to read about all these vivid characters! The book ends with some more resources to look into. I loved learning about Norse mythology. My nephew did too- he told me how much he loved learning about the stories and how it made Magnus Chase more fun to read! I loved hearing that! In turn, learning about Norse mythology made me want to read the Rick Riordan books! I’m happy to have this to bond with my nephew.

Trenton Colman is a creative thirteen-year-old boy with a knack for all things mechanical. But his talents are viewed with suspicion in Cove, a steam-powered city built inside a mountain. In Cove, creativity is a crime and invention is a curse word.

Kallista Babbage is a repair technician and daughter of the notorious Leo Babbage, whose father died in an explosion an event the leaders of Cove point to as an example of the danger of creativity.

Working together, Trenton and Kallista learn that Leo Babbage was developing a secret project before he perished. Following clues he left behind, they begin to assemble a strange machine that is unlikely anything they ve ever seen before. They soon discover that what they are building may threaten every truth their city is founded on and quite possibly their very lives.

Fires of Invention (Mysteries of Cove), by J. Scott Savage

From School Library Journal Gr 4–8—Young lovers of dystopian steampunk may be intrigued by Savage's latest offering to the genre. Mysteries take readers underground to the cryptic Cove, a subterranean, multilevel city not unlike District 13 in Suzanne Collins's "The Hunger Games" (Scholastic) books or the "community" in Lois Lowry's The Giver (HMH, 1993), with a dash of "here be dragons" flavor for good measure. Trenton Coleman, the story's middle school-age protagonist, finds his chances of becoming one of the city's mechanics jeopardized after breaking the strictest law: that no "inventions" shall be made by anyone. The creative Trenton breaks the law, making an unapproved "device." His penance leads him to a startling discovery, and with the help of the contradictory, rule-thwarting Katrina, Trenton searches for the reason the Cove has banned all invention. As his quest deepens, he unearths more than he bargains for. While Savage's premise is interesting, heavy use of mechanical jargon and feeble character development distract from an otherwise intriguing plot. Lengthy and detailed descriptions of gears, bolts, nuts, and levers will dizzy unaccustomed readers. The compelling story arc fails to compensate for the flat, inaccessible Trenton and the fuzzily defined Katrina. Their flinty relationship, meant to be mutually sharpening, is a tiresome exercise in a youthful scuffle of wills. VERDICT Only the most avid steampunk devotees will be able to overlook the flaws in this otherwise additional purchase for middle grade collections.—Chelsea Woods, New Brunswick Free Public Library

Review ''Savage has created an ingenious steampunk world . . . Trenton will be a firm friend to any readers who long to use their talents to make their world better.'' --Publishers Weekly (starred review)''First in a series and includes likable characters, themes of friendship and self-discovery, and enough mechanical parts to thrill the nerdiest science readers...Readers who like their dystopias flavored with steam engines will like what they find.'' --Booklist''Savage does a masterful job of weaving the believable and unique society for this coming of age story. The post-apocalyptic, totalitarian society provides the perfect backdrop for Trenton's journey from child to young adult...The political commentary the story is laced with...provides a welcome added substance to the story which makes it appealing for older readers as well.'' --Compass Book Ratings

Scott Savage telling me and my kids about a new book he was writing, we were all excited. The words Steampunk and Dragons stuck in my mind, but the thought that being creative was considered a crime was the thing that blew me away. In this society found in Fires of Invention, the first Mysteries of Cove book, all inventing has been outlawed and considered bad and staying within the norms was the safe and right thing to do. As a teacher I felt stifled by this idea. I love when my students are creative and come up with wild ideas. This is why I immediately fell in love with main character Trenton Colman. He doesn't fit in with the "average" kids at Cove because he has many ideas running through his head and he can't leave them alone. He knows he shouldn't consider building anything, and when he does this is where the fun starts. Along the way he meets a fellow inventor, Kallista Babbage, and their friendship starts off quite rocky with some kicks and punches. I laughed at the tension felt by these early teens and how they eventually get together to do something very important. I will be giving away no spoilers here because it is too much fun finding out what happens on your own!J.Scott Savage is such a wonderful story teller that this story came to life so easily in my mind. I know that this book's main audience is the Middle school/teen crowd, but honestly, as an adult I loved it! This book won't let you down, because it hooks you at the beginning and has a wonderful end that made me laugh and cry. It has a fabulous starting point for book two. I recommend this book for solo readers, teachers to read to their class, and for parents to read with their kids. You know you are always in for a great entertaining read when J. Scott Savage is the author. Well Done!!

Good book, but not really sure how the series will progress By RuthSophia I don't usually start a new series by an author when I haven't even finished the first series I begun with them. Some people can write awesome books, but when it comes to closing things out....they could use help. Well, so far I have been very impressed with the Farworld series (and am impatiently waiting for the library to send me the last installment!) so I decided to go ahead and start this brand new series from Savage in the meantime. So far, so good. The beginning of the novel is a much, much cleaner start than with Farworld, which had a rocky beginning and then hooked you. Yes, the book is obviously YA, but that doesn't mean that adults can't enjoy it too. While there is a little relationship drama, it is (mercifully!) NOT the focus of the book like it is in so many of this genre.I enjoyed Fires of Inventions, but am honestly confused as to how it is a series (Mysteries of Cove) ... there doesn't seem to be much you can do with a series of that title that what he did in this book. I see how the stage is set for a sequel, but this book works happily as a stand alone novel as well. Unlike with Farworld, you aren't really compulsively wondering what's going to happen next.As with Farworld, my biggest complaint is the age of the main characters (in both series, it's 13). I get that's the "middle grade" age range, but honestly, with what all the kids do in both series, it'd read better as 16-18 year olds. It's like the publisher said "great story, but the age has to be 13" without making allowances for developmental/maturity/responsibility differences.Still, all in all, a good book and nice start to the series. I will be keeping my ears open about when book 2 releases.

Most of all, this book is a glorious tribute to the power of imagination and innovative thinking. My daughter set this book down and exclaimed she wanted to be an inventor! Bravo, Mr. Savage. We can't wait for more!
