Because he reads so much and has a wide variety of interests I hoped this book would be one that he favored. He has not been in contact with many horses, those he has seen in parades and circuses and at outdoor events. He has not had a horse ride. However, this book opened his world a little, and he now has a passion for the wild mustangs.The author, Terri Farley, has followed the wild mustangs for awhile. As she tells us, "From the start I had three goals: 1) Open the door so readers worldwide see beyond wild horses’ beauty to their value. 2) Show readers what happens before, during and after wild horse round-ups. Even devoted horse folks may not know their history, science and natural lifestyle. 3) I want people to see they’re not alone."This is an eye opening book for those of us not familiar with the world of wild mustangs. I knew they were out there, but I had no idea these horses were used for dog food. I think my mind did not want to know what was happening, and that is probably like many people. It is through the efforts of Terri Farley and her supporters that we see change. Certainly my grandson will be one of them. He was startled and discouraged to see what might happen to these beautiful creatures.The photographs in my copy were in black and white, but I understand they will be in color for the finished proof. They are creative and beautiful in the black and white format. The writing is superb, grabbed my attention right away. This book is set for the 10-12 year old group which is an age that will be open to the ideas and information presented. This is a good time to present the true facts of our world, and how we can become an informed person.Recommended. prisrob 08-23-15

A valuable component of America’s heritage, the wild horse has come to be considered a nuisance and an impediment to commercial ranching. In “Wild at Heart: Mustangs and the Young People Fighting to Save Them”, Terri Farley provides a balanced, well-researched and extremely interesting discussion of these magnificent animals.Ms. Farley begins with an introduction that piques the reader’s curiosity and, without detracting from the larger work, synopsizes the entire book. Then, the modern history of the wild horse and of their pioneering advocate, Velma Johnson, provides an excellent starting point for the narrative to follow. As the book moves into the meat of the discussion about the wild horse, the text briefly details the existence of wild horses in prehistoric times and provides commentary by some noted researchers. Next Ms. Farley allows the reader to view the society and hierarchy of the wild horse herd; this discussion is fascinating. Two subsequent chapters talk about the why and the how wild horses are vanishing from their native habitat. Finally, Ms. Farley introduces some youthful advocates for the wild horse and tells readers the ways these committed are making a difference.Written in a logical, narrative style, “Wild at Heart” provides a factual and balanced view of the wild horse and its challenges. Never didactic or overly sentimental, Ms. Farley is able to make her viewpoint known and allows the reader to form a personal opinion about the wild horse and its importance. Throughout the book, gray boxes enclose “Eyewitness” accounts of individual’s observation of mustangs and the impact wild horses had on them personally. These add a depth to the narrative that is often missing in other similar works. A glossary, chapter notes, and bibliography follow the main text and provide additional sources for interested readers.Subtitling this book “Mustangs and the Young People Fighting to Save Them” may be a drawback when it comes to reaching readers. Only one chapter addresses youthful advocates for the wild horse. Further, this subtitle may mistakenly keep those older individuals from reading “Wild at Heart”. This book is one every person interested in American history and heritage, the environment and ecological systems, and animal welfare should read.Melissa Farlow’s photographs are exquisite – even, as they were in the ARC, in black and white. The magnificent portraits of the wild horse are breathtaking. These, alone, would make “Wild at Heart” a 5-star book; when coupled with the text, there was no doubt how I would rate this book.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Beautiful and Eye-Opening Book By Bryan Newman First, visually this is a beautiful book. I love the layout design and the great images of mustangs that go along with some very good and eyeopening information about what mustangs are facing. I don't think much of the country realizes the pressures that these wild horses are under. And I guess for that matter, I bet most people in the country don't realize that mustangs still exist, let alone be able to conjure an image of horses living on open range. This book does a great job of informing the reader and building that image of horses living wild.The author gives a great background history of horses in North America, from fossil record to reintroduction after they were extirpated 8000 years ago. The Paleontology is a little glossed over as is the release by the Spanish, but they are noted and the stage is set. Where the book truly focuses and succeeds is in illuminating the current management crisis the horses are facing. It informs the reader of the thousands of horses that are being held in government pastures, the traumas of roundups and hints at the true effectiveness of our current management policies. She does a great job of painting that picture of wild horses and their natural habits, followed by the fear and breakdown of that pattern during and after the round up. Also she points out the barely veiled industry of slaughtering the horses for dog food and other uses.The one thing that did kind of confuse me is that the Young People are prominent in the subtitle, but seem to be relegated to the last 30 odd pages. It would have been nice to see the stories of the young horse lovers spread throughout the book to help connect with kids. As it is, you have an excellent book about mustangs with an appendix of people helping out.I'm a little concerned about the somewhat graphic information about the roundups and slaughter. As a parent, I read the book first, and there is some mildly shocking information included. To an extent, this is the information that needs to be disseminated to kids and adults to shock them into action, but you may want to read it first and judge how your little onces can handle it. For me, there is some concern for a pretty informed 8 year old. I don't think I would have any qualms for tweens and up.
