This was a gift and since child lives on farm and they have 'red' International tractors it was great! All the Tractor Mac books are perfect for encouraging young readers!

Great kids books By Aaron DeMott I've seen these books for a few years at the local tractor show, and this year decided to look through them (My son turned 1 earlier this year and is just at the point where he can sit still for a story... and he LOVES tractors). The illustrations are colorful and engaging, and the stories are simply delightful, with lessons on friendship and such. In "Tractor Mac: Tune Up", Tractor Mac has to go to the "Tractor Doctor", and learns that doctors keep us healthy and help fix us when we break. (My son is having a minor operation soon, thus the choice of this particular title.)The other thing I like about these books is the accuracy of the illustrations. Some stories settle for "cute" when making the illustrations, but Billy Steers does a great job of making appealing, yet accurate illustrations. One can pick out the various make and model of Tractor Mac and his friends, and the inside cover of each book has a picture labeling each tractor part, along with an illustration specific to the book. (This one has a cut-away view of a 4 cylinder tractor engine, appropriate to a Farmall Super M).I am going to buy the rest of the series for my kids.

Siddiqui is a short tale of a bird and its success through difficult phase of life by motivational teaching by its mother turning the book into an outstanding moral story specially for children.Author M. Siddiqui has used simple language and words to convey a message that is larger than life. 'The Hungry Bird' is a fast paced, flawless little read which is bound to make its readers look forward for more small moral stories compiled in a single book from this promising writer who is very much blessed with a talent to captivate the little budding minds.I'd also like to suggest the author to add a few colorful pictures to his next write ups in order to provide a well imagined visualistic dimension to the little minds.Last but not the least I would love to recommend this motivating and inspiring book to all kids who love to read and for those who cant read because 'The Hungry Bird' is sure to make a perfect bed time story.

A touching tale of parent-child separation and immigration, from a National Book Award finalistAfter Saya's mother is sent to an immigration detention center, Saya finds comfort in listening to her mother's warm greeting on their answering machine. To ease the distance between them while she’s in jail, Mama begins sending Saya bedtime stories inspired by Haitian folklore on cassette tape. Moved by her mother's tales and her father's attempts to reunite their family, Saya writes a story of her own—one that just might bring her mother home for good. With stirring illustrations, this tender tale shows the human side of immigration and imprisonment—and shows how every child has the power to make a difference.

Mama's Nightingale: A Story of Immigration and Separation, by Edwidge Danticat

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—Brightly colored folk art with a Caribbean flair offsets the sadness of a little girl whose Haitian mother has been sent away to a prison for undocumented immigrants. Every night, Saya's father writes letters to the judges, their mayor and congresswoman, and newspapers and television stations, but no one ever writes back. During their weekly visits to the detention center, Saya's mother tells her stories of the wosiyòl, or nightingale. Soon, Saya begins to receive cassette tapes in the mail from her mother and finds hope and solace in the stories Mama has recorded for her. One night, amid a great deal of sadness and frustration, Saya writes a story of her own to ease the sadness. When Papa sends her letter to a newspaper reporter, everything changes, and Saya learns the incredible power of words and stories. Danticat, who was born in Haiti, was separated from her parents until she was 12 years old and beautifully conveys a story about loss and grief and hope and joy. Staub's oil paintings are eye-catching and will hold the interest of young readers. VERDICT This richly illustrated picture book is a first purchase, especially in communities with a large immigrant population.—Jennifer Steib Simmons, Anderson County Library, SC

Saya and her father visit her mother every week, but it’s not the same as having her mother at home. Saya’s father writes letters every evening, contacting politicians and reporters to try to get help. One evening, Saya decides to write her own story. Her father sends it to a newspaper, and a few days later, a reporter comes to interview them. As a result of the story in the paper, Saya’s mother gets to see a judge who allows her to go home while she waits for her papers to come through. In the author’s note, Edwidge Danticat tells the story of how she and her parents were separated by immigration until she was twelve years old. Grades K-3.Pros: Kids will be fascinated by Saya’s story and inspired by the way she helps her mom. The illustrations are beautiful, with bold colors and symbols from Mama’s stories woven into the pictures of the family.Cons: Expect a lot of questions about what is going on with this family from readers unfamiliar with immigration laws.

As the protagonist overcomes some difficult challenges, she also learns to recognize the power of her own words. The story centers on Saya, who is struggling with the separation from her mother, who has just been sent to “Sunshine Correctional” for not having “the right papers”. The name of the prison where Saya’s mom is being held reflects the practice of sugar-coating the real traumas that immigration laws and the separation of families inflict. In Danticat’s Author’s Note at the back of the book, she explains how this story is largely inspired by her own experiences as a child in Haiti dealing with the trauma of separation from her parents who moved to the U.S. Her parents tried to send for her and her brother, but could never succeed for they lacked “the right papers”. Danticat explains that she was always fascinated by “the idea of having the right papers” and how this abstract platitude weighed on many of her childhood memories: “As children in Haiti, my brother and I sometimes played writing games, making up passports, visas, and other documents that might one day reunite us with our parents.” Additionally, Danticat writes, “According to the Unites States’ Enforcement (ICE), the people Saya refers to as the immigration police, over 70,000 parents of American-born children have been jailed and deported in recent years. This book is dedicated to those children, who, like Saya, are dreaming of the day when their mother, or father, or both parents, will come home.” Danticat recreates her own childhood memories while infusing the story with elements of action, hope and change. The story begins with Saya listening to her mother’s voice on the answering machine late at night. Mama is not at home and Saya listens to the answering machine when she misses her mother. The voice says in Haitian Creole, “Please, leave us good news!”: “Tampri kite bon ti nouvèl pou nou!” Mama’s voice foreshadows the hopeful charge of the story and the goal of “good news” that drives the protagonist’s actions.Saya and Papa go to visit Mama in prison and Saya is overwhelmed by sadness upon seeing her mother. In the short time they have together, Mama tells Saya traditional Haitian stories about the wosiyòl, “a beautiful nightingale who loves the taste of a sweet cottony fruit called a soursop”: “Mama leans over and hums the wosiyòl’s song in my ear. The melody is as soft as Mama’s touch and as sweet as a real soursop”. Wosiyòl is also Mama’s nickname for Saya, as she too loves the taste of the soursop fruit. This reference to the tales of the wosiyòl, coupled with Staub’s evocative illustrations, presents the songbird as a symbol of freedom. Throughout the book there are also illustrations of birds perched on the interior windowsill of Mama’s jail cell, and caged songbirds in the decorative margins of the text, which represent, as readers may surmise, a lack of freedom. During Saya’s visit with Mama, Mama gives her a package with cassette tapes of her “wind-chime voice singing about the soursop and the nightingale” so that Saya can listen to her mother’s voice before bed. When Saya puts the cassette tape in she listens to Mama’s songs and an additional tale that Mama made up herself. In an illustration to match, Staub paints Mama as a beautiful spirit coming to visit Saya at night, with songbirds, hearts, stars and flowers swirling around her in a dream-like flurry. However, Mama is also shown with a rope strung across her arm, and two caged birds tied to either end. This symbolizes the shackles that have been placed on Mama in real life, despite the temporary reprieve of Saya’s dream. For access to the full review and additional resources, check out our Vamos a Leer blog at teachinglatinamericathroughliterature.com

Stirring illustrations and a tender tale show the human side of immigration in this picture book by Edwidge Danticat, who herself grew up in a family that was separated for years by immigration. Danticat’s book is dedicated to those young people like her main character, Saya, who are dreaming of the day when their family will be reunited. For Saya, the reason for her mother not being home is that she doesn’t have the right papers to stay in the United States and so she is being held in an immigration detention center. Every night, Saya’s father writes to the mayor and to other politicians, as well as to judges and to reporters about their situation. No one ever replies. Every time, Saya and her father visit the detention center, the question arises as to when her mother can come home. No one has any idea. After one particularly emotional visit, Saya’s mother begins to mail tapes with stories she reads or makes up for Saya to hear. In response, Saya writes her own story. Her story changes the family’s future. On the serious side, through her honest storytelling, Danticat provides real faces to the debate over immigration. While Saya’s story is fictional, it is inspired by real events. The author herself and her brother were separated from their parents for most of their childhood due to not having the right papers. She is not alone in her experience. According to the United States’ Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, over 70,000 parents of American-born children have been jailed and deported. In Mama’s Nightingale, Dantica has painted a poignant portrait of the difficult situation in which immigrant families often find themselves and given them a voice. On the hopeful side, Saya finds comfort in the bedtime stories her mother records on cassette tapes and sends her. Saya and her father even listen to them together. In addition, her father faithfully cares for her, offers her advice, and tucks her in at night. Although his sadness is readily apparent, he never allows it to hinder him from his important role as a parent to Saya. When Saya responds to her mother with her own story, she also discovers the power of words. Readers will appreciate reading of how Saya’s story results in her mother being released. Finally, artist Leslie Staub tempers the upsetting circumstances with bright of colors and whimsical objects from the stories Saya’s mother tells.Mama’s Nightingale is a powerful story. Young people in a similar situation will take comfort in Saya’s story. For those young people not impacted by immigration, Mama’s Nightingale makes a great discussion starting point. So many questions can be addressed such as: What are the right papers? Why doesn’t Saya’s mom have them? How can the proper papers be obtained? Why do immigrants need papers in the first place? Mama’s Nightingale is a tale that will make a difference in everyone who reads it.

Review

"In their innovative book, Denise and Gallit have created a must-read for any educator who has been wondering how to foster creativity and increase student engagement within the classroom. With its easy-to-follow ideas and inspirational stories, this book will give you all of the steps you need to implement Genius Hour right away, starting you on the path to creating schools that students cannot wait to come to." --Pernille Ripp, Teacher and Author of Passionate Learners: How to Engage and Empower Your Students

"Krebs and Zvi provide a step-by-step guide to Genius Hour that will give students the quality, self-determined learning time they deserve." --Jerry Blumengarten, Twitterbrarian, @cybraryman1, Former New York City Teacher, and Co-author of Connecting Your Students with the World

"The concept of Genius Hour ― a portion of time that students can use independently for their own projects and passions ― has taken the world of education by storm. The Genius Hour Guidebook is full of practical suggestions for helping you and your students get the most out of this precious hour of autonomy. If you take the authors’ advice, you’ll be amazed at the change in your classroom." --Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

"Many educators are asked to think outside the box, but this book describes how to innovate inside of it. The ideas behind Genius Hour shared in this book help to create innovative learning environments in all areas of the classroom. We all start somewhere, and this book helps you to push your students to unleash their passions. More importantly, it helps to develop students as learners long after their time in school." --George Couros, internationally recognized thought leader and a Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning in Alberta, Canada

"The Genius Hour Guidebook is a must-have manual for the 21st-century educator. Want to improve student engagement? Need more STEM in your classroom? Don't have time to waste? This book makes Genius Hour something any school can implement successfully." --Vicki Davis, @coolcatteacher, Blogger, Host of the Every Classroom Matters Show, and Author of Reinventing Writing (2014)

"Genius Hour is one of those ideas that not only inspires students but also reignites teachers who are passionate about learning but for a variety of reasons have lost some of that spark. What Gallit and Denise do so well is simply share their story, not as researchers or experts but as teachers who saw a need and took advantage of an innovative idea to change how students learn. This book provides detailed procedures and insights to get you started on your own journey. The best part, the part that wasn't possible in the past, is you get to stay connected and learn from them beyond the reading of this book. If you've heard of Genius Hour or have been thinking about it, you've come to the right place. --Dean Shareski, Community Manager, Discovery Education Canada and Former Classroom Teacher and Technology Consultant

They investigate bugs by digging up dirt and crouching down to get a closer look. Youngsters ask continuous questions seeking answers to something they wonder about. However, with time it seems students lose this need to search out answers. Authors Denise Krebs and Gallit Zvi encourage teachers to bring back the passion of inquiry with Genius Hour. The Genius Hour Guidebook offers a plan to “foster passion, wonder, and inquiry in the classroom”.The Genius Hour movement has spread throughout classrooms. Search for #geniushour on Twitter and the results are endless. So, why is this not happening more in classrooms? Krebs and Zvi offer a plan for teachers who hesitate trying Genius Hour. The opening chapter explains what is Genius Hour and why students need it. “Genius Hour gives students time to find and follow their passion.” The authors point out that change can be scary, but good stuff can happen when we are a bit uncomfortable.Introducing Genius Hour begins with a basic plan. Step 1: Inspire Your Class - Inspirational videos and picture books are a great starting point. Set up the learning environment so that “students know they’re supported and encouraged to be creative”. Step 2: Brainstorm with Students - Suggestions in the book include listing the things you love to do and learn, things you are good at, and things you wonder. Wonder Walls or Passion Walls can be displayed to inspire others. Step 3: Create an Inquiry Question - Authors suggest taking time to teach students the difference between a Google-able question and a thick question. Tips are included for supporting those who can’t come up with a question. The framework offered in the opening chapter is a guide, but the authors encourage readers to make it their own and personalize the experience.Once the learning environment has been established, Genius Hour is ready to launch. Students follow four steps:1. The Launch: Diving in and Letting Go2. Loosening Deadlines and Sharing Passions3. Helping Kids Make Their Learning Visible4. Teaching about Self-Assessment and FeedbackTeachers are used to being in charge and letting go is difficult. However, the authors stress the importance of letting go and becoming a fellow learner. Guiding students through their research, especially finding good information, is the beginning of the process. Alan November is quoted in the book, “If we only teach one skill to prepare our students to survive in a web-based works, it should be that of critical thinking in the analysis of online information.”Students are expected to share their newfound learning with the rest of the class in a presentation. Presentations can include slideshows, movies, documentaries, posters, or demonstrations. Students also need to take this experience further by making their learning visible. An authentic audience adds meaning to learning. Blogs and ePortfolios can be shared with the world through the various social networks. Several chapters explain in depth the process of making learning visible, self-assessment/feedback, and challenging students to improve the world. The Genius Hour Guidebook may be an easy read, but it is a powerhouse of resources. The authors set a foundation to understand how learning happens during this time, how to guide students through the process, as well as assessment. Resources and lesson plans are included in the appendix along with a companion website [...] Denise Krebs and Gallit Zvi have written a complete guidebook that will challenge both the beginning or expert teacher to think outside of the box and bring passion back to learning.(Review originally posted at [...]

One of the most inspiring parts of this book is the way the authors shape the projects as being student-driven and inquiry-based. Denise and Gallit have shared their insights with the Genius Hour community for so many years now on their websites, blogs, and twitter. This book is not only an extension of that work, but a comprehensive guide on how to roll out and implement Genius Hour successfully.

As a deep-rooted klutz, a non-finisher of crafts, and a victim of repeated pants-rippings, humor writer Willow Feller recalls the events that continually ravaged her best efforts to appear polished and fashionable. As a misguided, presumptive, and spiritually-blind Christian, she also recounts the way her Pharisaical pride made her too unbalanced to stay on her Evangelical high horse. Knitting funny stories from her own life with threads of scriptural Pharisee history, Willow creates a canvas that depicts the days when her heart motives were as diseased as those of the self-righteous religious leaders in the New Testament. Drawing from the nostalgia of a 1970s childhood and her later years as a frazzled mom, she goes on to bring many of her tales to their inevitable conclusion—a tragic, yet necessary fall. You’ll laugh and cringe as Willow elaborates on how the humiliations and comeuppances that dogged her every turn opened the door for the healing that now graces her every step on what she calls “a journey to freedom from pathological piety.”
