"Honey? I think you have a twin." Amber Brickman used to dream of unearthing ancient civilizations with her soulmate. But now she's the Assistant Fire Marshal, sifting through burn sites while the walls are still warm, looking for evidence of arson. It's the life she's pieced together after her fiancé was murdered just weeks before their wedding. Ashes are easier to sort out than broken hearts, and paperwork doesn't leave you lonely.

She's not asking for more, but she's about to get it when her mother sees a woman on the news who looks and sounds just like her. Her mother is convinced she's found Amber's twin, stolen at birth.

Amber wants nothing to do with this insanity, but the more she resists, the more her mother delves into the past, desperate for the truth no matter what the cost. The only way to find it may be to open up and risk everything -- her job, her heart -- but digging up her past will be trickier than any burnt-out building. Jane Lebak's novels have taken readers through the realm of angels and the funnier sidestreets of New York City. In Half Missing, she explores how the past impacts on the present, and how the losses of three different women can braid together into a stronger future.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Keeper! By Dr. Debra This book is the best I've read in a long time, which is huge praise considering how many good books I read. I downloaded the sample first, and then bought the book. I started reading for a few minutes at bedtime at 12:00 and didn't stop until I finished at 3:30 am. I'm not sure where to start--a heroine with an unusual and interesting occupation--that of a fire marshal, a point of view secondary character who's a midwife (with spot-on details)--a tale of mystery, family love, romantic love, and healing old loss and grief. I loved the characters and the plot. I didn't want the story to end.

Half Missing not only answers the question "what if I had a missing twin?" but the mother's question "What if I had a second baby, but never knew about her?" Both the mother's and the daughter's stories are told, and both have a mix of emotions about the whole situation.I really identified with the twin sister and her struggles. Lebak's writing is so honest, that it just pulls deep into your gut and reaches into you. I seriously felt very strongly about what was happening in the story. I had real life tears a few times too.As with Lebak's other books, there's an element of humor. I always enjoy her sarcasm and sense of humor as well. Half Missing touches all the highlights, grief, joy, birth, suspense, romance, humor, and a little mystery. I highly suggest this book to anyone looking for a good immersive read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Amazing Book By Pauline Griffin I have read Ms. Lebak's novel and read it again. The concept is intriguing, a twin baby stolen and sold to another couple at birth. Years later, her biological mother and sister discover her and seek to connect with her. The author takes this material beyond the mere dramatic by touching on all those involved -- both families, both young women, the broader circles connected with them -- and she does it in a way that makes the reader care about all of them. The suspense holds to the very end. In the midst of it all, Ms. Lebak's signature humor is present. It gives life and a sense of reality to the characters, helping to turning them in the reader's mind from creations to genuine people caught up in an incredible situation.

But as for people who don't trust you, even if you explain they wont bother to listen. While reading this book, I came to a point that maybe its due to how we communicate. As mentioned in the chapter 3 of this book on the importance of good communications, our way of communication might have generated a misrepresentation of our true self and hence all the misunderstanding and mistrust.Worry not, the author has shared with us the 8 ways on how we can improve our communications and the 5 secrets to communicate well in the last 2 chapters of this book. You wont be immediately great at it but practice makes perfect.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Short read on communication improvement tips By Jeff Quite an easy read but I can't find much on the practical examples in improving the communication. I am not sure if this book can effectively help me to improve my networking of people.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Random facts about different games. By AZmom My 10 year old has been begging me for this book and I have been hesitant to buy it because it seems non-purposeful and a dust collector. It is full of random facts about all sorts of games and gaming systems (some familiar games and some we've never heard of.) It does cover a wide range of games, games for children: Minecraft, Disney Infinity, Lego games, and Skylanders (just to name a few) to more mature played games: Final Fantasy, Cosplay games, HALO, and League of Legends. I believe the colorful pictures and the "exclusive" promised interview on the front cover with Joseph Garrett (AKA Stampy) is what sucks the kids in to want to read this book. There are not so much tips on how to play as s it just facts: top 10 gaming hoaxes, top 10 cutest characters, top 10 epic rivalries, best licensed games, the most influential games ever, etc. There is a 15 page section o the "coolest gaming secrets," although the games on those pages are none we've really heard or played.Overall, my son of course loved the book and had his nose buried in it for a couple of hours, however, once you read it, that's it. What do you do with it then? I don't think I could justify the $15 full price tag and I probably wouldn't purchase it on my own. It would be an item that my son would have to use his allowance money on to purchase. It has had one negative effect, "Can we buy, can we check out, can we look at.....that game?" It's not any worse than seeing the commercials on tv, but be warned, it has opened up a more wide range of games to ask about.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Packed with facts for my preteen gaming fans By Karen Wilber More an almanac than a "how-to guide", this book is heavy on screenshots, brief paragraphs, top 5 lists and gamer profiles. A typical entry contains a 2-page spread with a brief history or description of the game, a list of stats, a top 5 list (Top 5 Characters, Top 5 Gadgets, etc.) a timeline of game releases, and an "Also Check Out" list for similar games on different systems. There are a slew of Top 10-style lists: Top 10 Funniest Lines, Top 10 Oddest Accessories, Top 10 Coolest Weapons, The Most Influential Games Ever and so on. There are 4 longer "Features" sections: 50 Greatest Gaming Moments; Glitches, Stunts, and Fails; 50 Hardest Achievements and Trophies; and The Coolest Gaming Secrets of All Time.It has a good balance of game genres (fantasy, platform, adventure, sports) with too many titles to list here. Featured games include the Mario Games (Kart, Party) the LEGO series, Minecraft, World of Warcraft, Skylanders, Madden NFL, and Grand Tourismo. This is not an in-depth guide to any of the games, but a trivia and tip-packed book aimed at the upper elementary/middle school set. My 11 and 8-year-old love it. It's printed on fairly thick paper and should last through hours of page turning before it needs repair or reinforcement. This would make a great gift for any kid who loves videogames. The vocabulary/reading level is probably 5th-7th grade, but with so many illustrations, younger readers will enjoy it as well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. AWESOME Book! Lots of Fun!! By Wandering Hoosier It's hard to believe how much gaming knowledge went into this book. It's organized by the following:1. Features (e.g., 50 Greatest Gaming Moments, The Coolest Gaming Secrets of All Times, etc.)2. Split-Second Showcases (e.g., League of Legends, Forza Horizon 2, etc.)3. Games (e.g., Clash of Clans, Minecraft, Mario, Pokemon, etc.)4. Lists (e.g., Funniest Lines, Epic Rivalries, Gaming Hoaxes, etc.)5. Roundups (e.g., Mobile Roundup, Superhero Roundup. etc.)I'm hardly a gamer but I still enjoy reading the book. It's well written and gives interesting facts about an amazing number of games. The entire book is in color--making it easy to sort through the facts and attractive to read. I like that important facts have been put in large font and bold characters so that they can be easily spotted.I'm very impressed by this book and think that it's something I'll be reading over and over. Just to add, it's really not a book that you'd want to read cover to cover. It's better to be read a few pages at a time or referenced when you're playing a game that the book describes. Also, it's useful for giving tips as to what games people with different preferences will like to play.

Gerald and Sue Glasco wanted to farm and rear their children in the country. Leaving a farm management job at Columbiana Ranch near Eldred, Illinois, they bought a 75-acre farm in partnership with Gerald's brother Keith and wife Barbara in southern Illinois and rented another. Their big old farm house on the rented land had been standing empty except for mice. Sue cleaned, painted, and helped the children adjust to a new community. Gerald rushed to be ready for the arrival of baby pigs and started to install the house's first plumbing. Then there was a fire. Pregnant with their fourth child, Sue recorded their rural adventures and misadventures in the 1960s. Finally they moved even deeper into the country to the hog farm. Down on the Farm, a good story for the young or old, captures the universal struggle of young couples who set out to achieve their dreams. With ambitions to write and raise a large family, Sue Glasco did both when she married an agriculture major who also loved rural life. Their four children provided much subject matter. Sometimes she wrote with a toddler hanging on her neck. Sometimes she wrote with humor and sometimes with tears.

A Personal Field of Dreams By Mary Walsh If you are caught up in the daily stress of everyday city or suburban life, you need to read Down On the Farm. It is a welcome escape that will have you dreaming of the promise and rewards of living a farmer's life. The author chronicles both the positives and occasional downsides of her life. However, the reader is always left with the heartfelt reward of the author's sharing of what seemed to be an ideal life in a field of dreams. A must read!

More than "Just a Housewife" By Hammeringhal As you read Sue's account of her daily life with her husband, children and the community, you see that "just a housewife" does not do her "calling" justice. Her stories bring back fond memories to me of life on the farm. A well-written book. I would like to read of her research into the stories of "The Trail of Tears".Harold Stark

This is a true life story about a man who made a huge mistake which ultimately landed him in prison. More heartbreaking than having to serve time was the fact that when sentenced, his daughter had not yet been born. Due to his absence, the father fears that he and his daughter will not have that father/daughter connection. Yes, the inability to be a vital part of her life physically, is a very taxing reality for him. Yet, through the storm – and against all odds, he used every means he could to forge a bond, which resulted in an indescribable stillness that brought about light. This is a journey that is emotional, raw, and ugly, yet amazingly beautiful. It is pain and it is joy, it’s bitter, yet it is sweet. Frankly, it is documented motivation that exemplifies that even in a man’s darkest hour, with faith, the sun still has the ability to break through. However, more astonishing than anything, it’s honest and from the heart... Enjoy!

The Surplus American considers a future where increasing numbers of Americans will be rendered jobless and redundant. Exploring the ongoing crisis of 'surplus people' today, authors Charles Derber and Yale Magrass show that the jobless are merely the tip of the iceberg. Drawing on the work of economists and highlighting new trends, the book identifies a number of primary groups within the category of 'surplus' including the underemployed, people forcibly removed or induced to leave the labour force and retirees. Derber and Magrass argue that a majority of the US public is now part of the surplus population constituting an integral part of the economy. The authors conclude that these movements will be essential to solving the crisis of surplus people and redirecting the economy in a more positive direction.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Surplus American By Em In their book You're Fired, authors Yale Magrass and Charles Derber present an accessible and articulate explanation of the evolution of inequalities worldwide. These inequalities, they argue, have the potential of leading to the creation of a large class of "surplus people," who have been made obsolete by the American system. As more and more people face the reality of leaving their offices with a pink slip in hand, the relevancy of this discussion, which unpacks the ways the American institutional system normalizes the process of creating surplus people, becomes increasingly apparent. Case studies from periods of world history in the past 300 years helps frame the argument, and provide proof of a consistent pattern of surplus-making.The authors use a unique and innovative strategy to communicate their message: the book is divided into an essay portion and a play portion. While the essay offers a more intellectual recount, the play presents a witty and satirical analysis that is appropriate for many audiences and ages. The play has the potential to be an influential resource in the current social movements as a source of important knowledge and insight into the past, present, and future of surplus people.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Eye-opening By Generàl The history of surplus people provides an interesting analysis of the direction the US economy is heading. Through uses of multiple narrative forms, Derber and Magrass provide an in-depth cultural and economic analysis tracing the path of surplus people throughout history. With a hint of comedy and the occasional appearance of intellectual ghost, the beginning play provides an accessible way to engage readers with the subject matter. The remaining section of the book elaborates on aspects and themes within the play, allowing for a more thorough understanding. As engaging as the narrative style seems, don't assume you're in for a light read. Many books today have plenty of sizzle, but not much steak. I recommend that you sink your teeth into this big, juicy T-bone of a book, a rare treat for intellectual readers searching for economic understanding and substantive history of surplus people. The Surplus America is a must read to understand how Western capitalism became what it is today and what path it is on for tomorrow.

0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Only for those with surplus money By David H. Katz A long essay rather than a book, with two versions of the same mediocre play included to fatten the package and the publisher's profits---ironic, given its radical subject matter. The title in any case tells it all.

Kids, a Primer is a collection of a grandfather's musings on the way his (now grown) children are raising their children and being glad about being a grandparent rather than a new parent with young children (again). While Ungar is convinced that grandparents could do a better job raising children if they had the energy, he is grateful that he, in fact, no longer has the energy. Readers will enjoy Ungar's signature sarcastic and witty tone but will be left with a warm sense of gratitude for parents and children alike by the end.
