A Curious Tale of the In-Between, by Lauren DeStefano

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Pram Bellamy possesses a strange talent: she can see and hear ghosts. Unfortunately, her gift makes fitting in at school a challenge, so she prefers the company of her books and her ghostly friend, Felix. Then Pram meets Clarence, a lonely boy who has also lost his mother, and the two forge a friendship through their common bond. Just as Pram is beginning to embrace a more ordinary life, however, her extraordinary nature puts her in danger. The mysterious Madame Savant is more than willing to kidnap and murder to get what she wants—and she means to use Pram's abilities to fuel her own ambitions. Bereft of friends and family and struggling with powers she's just beginning to understand, Pram has to break free of her captors. DeStefano's story is startlingly dark, with mature themes of death, madness, and suicide coupled with a lively paranormal adventure. The author explores not only the mysteries of the beyond but also the impact of absent parents and the healing powers of friendship. While the emotionally charged narrative is less likely to satisfy those looking for a spooky thrill, more sophisticated readers will appreciate the vivid characters with rich internal lives. VERDICT Readers who enjoyed A.J. Paquette's Rules for Ghosting (Bloomsbury, 2013) and Grave Images by Jenny Goebel (Scholastic, 2013) will want to give this title a try.—Stephanie Whelan, New York Public Library

Review

“Readers will be hooked from the first line of this lyrical and suspenseful mystery/fantasy (part thriller too) of a brave and compassionate girl. . . . DeStefano artfully concocts a moving and multilayered tale that is an effective mix of genres and tones, at times contemplative and philosophical yet also macabre and psychologically sophisticated. Love, loss, and hope are at the heart of this exciting read.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“The perfect book to hand to readers looking for the mysterious and spooky.” ―Booklist

“DeStefano creates a beguiling world through haunting images and descriptions. . . An eerie, moving story about 'that murky place between this world and the one that comes after it.'” ―Publishers Weekly

“Startlingly dark. . . Sophisticated readers will appreciate the vivid characters with rich internal lives. Readers who enjoyed A.J. Paquette's Rules for Ghosting and Grave Images by Jenny Goebel will want to give this title a try.” ―School Library Journal

“The voice of this dark but often funny novel is as pragmatic as Pram, matter-of-factly acknowledging truths its characters need to know, even when those truths are unpleasant. . . Fans of Holly Black's Doll Bones may well enjoy this creepy, character-based tale.” ―The Horn Book

“A harrowing debut. . . . DeStefano has an observant eye.” ―Publishers Weekly on WITHER

“A concoction of tension and love with a cliff-hanger ending.” ―School Library Journal on PERFECT RUIN: THE INTERNMENT CHRONICLES BOOK 1

“DeStefano has created a perfect storm--intertwining plot, characters, and setting beautifully. . . . This is a page-turner, and waiting for the next book will be hard, hard, hard.” ―Booklist on PERFECT RUIN: THE INTERNMENT CHRONICLES BOOK 1

Pram’s adventures are exciting and touching, making A CURIOUS TALE OF THE IN-BETWEEN a gripping story that I couldn't put down By KidsReads Lauren DeStefano --- author of the young adult series the Internment Chronicles and the Chemical Garden Trilogy --- delivers A CURIOUS TALE OF THE IN-BETWEEN, a magical middle grade novel following a young girl named Pram.Pram, short for Pragmatic, is raised by her aunts in a home for the elderly. Her only friend growing up was Felix, a ghost only she could see. However, when Pram starts going to public school, she befriends a boy named Clarence who is grieving for his late mother. The three of them search for Pram’s mystery father and the ghost of Clarence’s mother and find plenty of adventure on the way.At the start of the story, I found myself wondering if A CURIOUS TALE OF THE IN-BETWEEN should truly be middle grade. The opening scene describes a nurse discovering a pregnant woman, Pram’s mother, hanging from a dogwood tree. If the reader is comfortable with that passage, the tale DeStefano weaves is great for that age range. There is an eerie tone in this book, and the presence of ghosts and a spirit world make it an amazing read to prepare for the Halloween season. However, just like I believe that this middle grade book is great for readers above that age range, it would also be a good read at all times of the year.Pram’s adventures are both exciting and touching, making A CURIOUS TALE OF THE IN-BETWEEN a gripping story that I could not put down.DeStefano knows how to build enchanting characters. As a curious young girl with an ability to see ghosts, Pram sees the world through a unique perspective. She is an intelligent, caring girl who comes into herself throughout the tale. As Clarence, another complex character, grows closer to Pram, he teaches both her and the readers about the meaning of friendship. At its heart, A CURIOUS TALE OF THE IN-BETWEEN is about two grieving 11-year-olds, and their experiences navigating loss will teach readers of any age different outlooks on death and how to deal with death in their own lives. The amazing learning opportunities are not limited to mourning; this book has taught me about the meaning of family and the importance of loving yourself.Pram’s adventures are both exciting and touching, making A CURIOUS TALE OF THE IN-BETWEEN a gripping story that I could not put down. Even though the events in this book came to a satisfying resolution, there is plenty of room to continue with Pram’s story. If DeStefano writes a sequel, I would love to read more about Pram and her remarkable world.Reviewed by Alyssa L.

She’s struggling like every young person does, trying to find her place in a world that can be very confusing. For Pram this whole experience is heightened because Pram can see spirits. She sees deceased people and even sees deceased bugs. She lives in a home for the aging with her aging aunts and there is not a moment that goes by in her life where Pram is not aware of her uniqueness. In her world, death is very much a reality. From the spirits she sees to the elderly charges in her aunt’s home, she is surrounded by it. Even the “mystery” of her birth is surrounded by death. She lost her mother when she was born and she has a father she has never met. This alone sets her apart from other children. She is homeschooled until her aunts are forced to send her to school where she meets her first real friend, Clarence. Clarence and Pram form an instant bond as they both lost their mothers. Clarence longs to get closure and to say goodbye to his mother and takes Pram along with him to seek answers from spiritualists. Pram takes Clarence along when she decides she needs to meet her father. These fast friends support each other through their darkest times and come to trust each other as truths are revealed and their safety is on the line. This is a book you just can’t put down, whether you are a young child or adult. This is obviously written for younger readers but it’s a wonderful story that will work its way into your heart. These characters are believable and lovable. The storyline is part reality, part magic and that’s what I love about it the most. Magical realism ROCKS! One word of caution for sensitive children: this book touches on suicide and obviously death and the hereafter. I think its fine, but everyone knows their own child best. I’d say this one would be good for ages 11 and up.

It was also the first ever book that I got approved for on Netgalley so that is super exciting! This book is about Pram, an eleven-year-old girl who lives in a really old house with her Aunts Nan and Dee who take care of elderly people there. Her mother died when she was a baby and her father isn't in the picture. Pram is a rather unusual little girl because she can see and speak to ghosts. Her only friend in the world is the ghost of a boy named Felix until she is forced to go to real school (rather than homeschooling) and becomes fast friends with a boy named Clarence. Like Pram, Clarence doesn't have a whole lot of friends. Also like Pram, Clarence's mother passed away. He would really like the chance to say goodbye to her so together they go visit spiritualists trying to connect with her. One of the spiritualists, Lady Savant, can tell right away that Pram is special and takes an unfortunate interest in her. This book was a really nice read. It was kind of dark, but never real scary. It was pretty fast paced, which I liked, and I really enjoyed Lauren's writing. I liked the way the ghosts and the spirit world were approached in this book as well.Pram is a very sweet little girl. She's compassionate, smart, brave, and really tough! Felix is a wonderful friend to Pram and is very protective of her because he knows how special she is. Clarence is a really nice boy. He is very accepting of Pram's eccentricities and believes in her ability to see ghosts. He is a very good friend to her as well and the relationship they have is adorable.I haven't read a whole lot of middle grade books, but this one was very good and I would recommend this book if you like ghost stories!

That Woman, by Aalina Nyx

From the Author This was an emotionally difficult story for me to write, but was one that I felt I needed to release from my soul. Not only for my sake, but for the sake of others who may be living the same reality I was. It sat on my hard drive for months after I had it written waiting for me to be okay enough with the pain to be able to edit and publish it. By no means is it only my story. It is the story of millions worldwide. It may be very difficult to read and understand, as commented on within the story due to the very nature of the story and that yes, my children were just as much a part of this story as I was.A.N

About the Author Aalina Nyx grew up and still resides in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta. Aalina took to writing at a very young age and has written many works of literature that clutter her office and her computer alike. Her newest piece, "That Woman" takes a big leap from other stories she has written in the fact that it is autobiographical in nature and not sheer fantasy. At some point you realize the greatest stories you have to tell are the ones deep inside your soul. "That Woman," is that story for Aalina.

"That Woman" is one of those stories that you won't soon forget. It may be a quick read but it is a very powerful one. There's no graphic details of the domestic violence which is good but you do get to really feel how she felt living with daily abuse and all that goes with it. The story starts out by grabbing you quickly and brings your through her story and her children's. Thankfully she escaped and she speaks directly to the reader that may be living with domestic violence and seeking to escape. Highly recommended read.

Art professor Lydia Drexel has lost her muse. For the first time, she is hopelessly staring at a blank canvas; she’s blocked. When she relates her anxiety to colleague and confidant, Dr. Charles Harris, his answer is “the perfect getaway.” A stack of books, a case of wine, and a few weeks at his cousin’s cabin in the mountains should free her mind. Settling into the picturesque retreat, Lydia intends to focus on her art, along with any issues that might be inhibiting her ability to create. Before she starts to sketch, she meets two young artists who live nearby. Early in their friendship, she senses an abnormal tension between the brother and sister. Lydia soon learns Jan and Bryce Johnson’s adoptive parents died in a car crash, but ample support from an insurance policy and moral support from the community allow them to remain independent. At the Farmers Market, Lydia is drawn to the intricate puzzle boxes Bryce carves. Inside one, she finds a slip of paper with strange symbols on it. As the siblings’ behavior becomes more and more mysterious, the marks turn up in other places. Vowing to decipher them, Lydia surrenders to a lifelong tendency to focus on anything but her own problems. While hiking one day, she meets another resident of the mountain town, architect and contractor John Crawford, who is recently widowed. Lydia has never been married and is unsure about sharing her life with someone, but their connection is undeniable. As Lydia comes closer to discovering the truth behind the cryptic emblems, dark secrets are revealed and lives are in jeopardy. Her respite is far from the quiet withdrawal she had envisioned, but what she learns about herself and her art is life-changing

The pages are thick and glossy and the illustrations are sweet but for a sticker book it's lacking stickers. The concept is nice with an illustration missing on every page or every other page that requires a sticker to complete it but that only works out to about 12 bigger stickers to place. There are about 18 small stickers of flowers and stars that would be very hard to place for a toddler because of their size. Altogether there are only the two pages of stickers as you can see in the photos I took. I was expecting a lot more stickers like other sticker activity books I have ordered. I was hesitant to order without the pages to preview and I wouldn't have if I had seen how few stickers there were.

The stickers are reusable, but you definitely have to be gentle with them so they don't tear. My 2 year old handled them with ease and loved matching the sticker up to the correct spot.

Review

"If I had to choose a single book to share with a faculty member about how to design and teach an online or blended course, or with an instructional designer partnering with that faculty member, that book would be Essentials of Online Course Design: A Standards-Based Guide, Second Edition. In this concise, clear, and well-written volume, Marjorie Vai and Kristen Sosulski provide a methodology for online and blended course design that is informed by learning theory and seasoned by practical experience. This is the standard reference guide that those of us involved in online and blended learning will be keeping close at hand."

For everyone that has been teaching in the traditional classroom, this book shows the way to transition to an online or blend curriculum. In fact, it even helps with the continuing design of the traditional model. For the experienced online instructor, it will supply the one or two missing elements that you have been looking for.Harry ChernoffProfessor, NYU Stern School of Business

It covers everything from high-level rationales for designing an online course to best practices in document design. Guidelines for producing audio and video media are also included. The companion website, Essentials of Online Course Design (http://essentialsofonlinecoursedesign.com/), adds an extra dimension to the book, offering additional resources for deeper exploration. It’s an excellent and easy-to-understand introduction for educators on how to make sense of and effectively use LMSs at their institutions. Even if not teaching online, the strategies in this book are an extension of core sound teaching principles that any instructor will be able to apply to create effective technology-enhanced teaching and learning experiences.Bancha SrikachaInstructional TechnologistManhattanville College

The pressure is on. Throughout the country, educators and administrators are working hard to make sure students pass standardized tests and graduate. At the same time, teachers are overwhelmed by ever-increasing demands. Efforts at reforming schools often replicate the same approaches and net the same discouraging results. Staff at many schools feel defensive and powerless as a result of being unable to meet standards they didn’t set and don’t know how to achieve. This book describes a humanistic approach to implementing programs and systems that bring academic press, social support, and relational trust together in unique ways. Based on the understanding that old beliefs are changed by supporting new behaviors, the approach includes acquiring and using data in innovative and intentional ways. Properly conducted, the approach results in high morale, a sense of inclusiveness and success, increased efficacy, and improved metrics in all areas of education. The book includes the research and theory behind the approach, action steps for leaders, and lessons learned in the process—useful elements of success for any school.

Review It is so refreshing to read a book about school reform from the point of view of the people who actually did the work. This book is proof that with dedicated, tenacious, and student-centered educators—anything can happen! (Becky Berg, Superintendent, Marysville School District, Past President ASCD)In this timely book, the authors share important lessons of a lived experience in school leadership in which a low-performing school was genuinely transformed into the opposite. And this account comes not from an inner-city in a large school system, but from a mid-size district that could exist anywhere in the nation. This well-written book is a must-read for every educator who embraces a commitment to success for all. (Michael Dunn, EdD, Superintendent, North East Washington Educational Service District 101)In the current context of school systems, people often feel not only unloved, but also powerless. This book shows that person-to-person relationships can restore the balance in leadership-impoverished school systems, turning them into organizations where people listen, embody greater vitality, and act with love and courage. (Shann Ray Ferch, author Forgiveness and Power in the Age of Atrocity: Servant Leadership as a Way of Life; National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow; professor of Leadership Studies, Gonzaga University)The work of Dr. Salina in high-poverty, high-minority, underachieving schools affirms that poverty is not a sickness, diversity is not a challenge to overcome, and hope is not a strategy for change. Powerless to Powerful combines the theory, the evidence-based research, and the proven practical application to truly transform your school and district. (Trevor Greene, National Association of Secondary School Principals' 2013 National High School Principal of the Year)

Great for any manager, leader, or school to transform the culture of their workplace By Elizabeth Wiederspohn I looked at the piece of paper in front of me. It couldn't be. We were doing everything the education experts said we needed to do to succeed and according to the sheet of paper in front of me, none of it had worked. As a teacher at Sunnyside High School, I was discouraged and tired. That is when Dr. Salina stepped in. We had missed a piece of the puzzle and it was a big one. His model of leadership and his process to empower staff and students really did work and has continued to work after Dr. Salina left Sunnyside High School. Sunnyside High School changed from a place no one wanted to work in to a place no one wants to leave. I would encourage any manager, leader or school to read Dr. Salina's book and change the culture of their workplace.
