Inspired by a 1932 Walt Disney Silly Symphony animated short, the Santa's Toy Shop Little Golden Book was originally published in 1950. In this delightful story, Santa wants time to play with all the wonderful toys he and the elves have made, but he's just too busy--until Mrs. Claus gives him an idea! Disney animator Al Dempster and the Walt Disney Studio artists created a holiday classic we are proud to reissue as a Little Golden Book--for the first time in over 20 years. But when I got the book home and began reading it, I discovered the pictures are the same, but the story is different. My mother still has our old copy, now falling apart from years of reading, and I was disappointed to find that the whole story had been rewritten. I don't think they should be allowed to use the cover and pictures and attach a different story just to call it the "Classic" edition.

Walt Disney's Santa's Toy Shop By A Customer I was very excited to see this book on the shelve I think it's great to see all those great drawings so big and beautiful, but BEWARE it is not the same as the little golden book. Monique Peterson re-wrote the story and unfortunatley she didn't make it better, it lacks the warmth of the golden book. To me it's like if they had taken the illustrations from Twas the Night Before Christmas and discarded the story. If you've never read the original Santa's Toy Shop you'll think this version by Monique is cute in a "Barney" kind of way, but for my money ,buy a used copy of the golden book it will be much cheaper and a lot more fun.BTW My parents only spent 49 cents on our copy of the book

Their siblings found love in Keeping Her Guilty Secret, and these two start this book as newlyweds.Neither wants the emotional entanglement of the deep love they see in their siblings. They have a healthy attraction and decided to get married after Ashley became pregnant.Reed works long hours at the contracting business. Ashley deferred acceptance to law school for a year with the pregnancy and continues to work at her event planning job. The return of her old high school boyfriend Jake confuses her a little, but then a miscarriage throws her and Reed into depression.Neither has the words to comfort each other properly. Reed shuts Ashley out, and hurt, she moves to start a separation right away. She gets the final divorce papers quickly and realizes she was in love with her husband. She just didn't know enough about him, his feelings or his background to make the marriage work.Reed doesn't need to see her ex boyfriend hanging around to realize what he lost; he knows it already from the deep unhappiness he is experiencing. With some bumps, these two move to find their way out of their sadness and back to each other. This novella has plenty of emotion and James signature smart characters and dialogue. I am getting to the point where I read all of her work now. It is nice to see how deeply the man was affected by miscarriage too. The epilogue is surprising yet satisfying. Another fun read from James! I was happy to receive an ARC of this story in exchange for this review.

Ashley's old flame returned and tried to win her back but she knew she loved Reed but thought he only loved his career so she did the only thing she knew to do and she decided to go back to school. After Reed sees Jake with Ashley he acknowledges he love her and wants back. Lobe story short they reunite. Enjoyed the story and would love to read more of this authors works.I received this book free for my honest opinion.

By Jessica Sheehan I received an ARC for an honest review.I didn't read the first book in his series so I would definitely recommend that as I'm sure a lot of things mentioned in this story would make way more sense.I liked the idea of the story, but there was definitely a lack of character development that maybe came in the first book. The writing was really good and one scene actually brought me to tears. I liked that it was a quick read, but again, I felt quite a bit was missing by not knowing the back story.

Unfortunately, civic values such as equity and justice that constitute the moral grounding of American democracy are losing their place in public affairs. The promise of this democracy is inclusive: no one is to be left out. Yet many people are. Education and the Making of a Democratic People regards the challenge of inclusiveness as a fundamental and non-negotiable educational agenda. America's public schools are a main public forum in which people can learn to preserve and actively protect our democratic process. The value of our schools as a democratic forum extends beyond the classroom to parents and other members of local communities. By engaging in conversations and actions that support the democratic purpose of schools, local communities can ensure that the United States will become a healthy, robust democracy that represents all of its citizens.

Education and the Making of a Democratic People, by John I. Goodlad, Roger Soder, Bonnie McDaniel

Review “Goodlad and Soder once again have given us a timely book. ‘Democracy’ as we have known it is currently under siege, having been replaced by ‘special interest groups’ and manipulated on their behalf. The citizen’s voice has thereby been marginalized. This book reminds us that we must reinvigorate that voice.” (Theodore R. Sizer)“These authors work their way through the most important argument of our day. This book takes on democracy both as a matter of principle and as a matter of care for the future, and brings it down to earth where we must in the end settle it in the details of schooling.” (Deborah Meier)

About the Author John I. Goodlad is President of the Institute for Educational Inquiry and Cofounder of the Center for Educational Renewal at the University of Washington. Roger Soder is Research Professor of Education in the College of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle. Bonnie McDaniel is Research Associate at the Institute for Educational Inquiry.

That leaves just 4 lunch/dinner recipes and 1 snack recipe. I haven't tried the recipes out just yet, but I am a little disappointed that there aren't a good mix of different meals. Though there isn't much room to complain about something that costs you 99 cents.

Just for kids, twenty bone-chilling tales about the most dangerous fantastical beasts in American folklore. Meet the Snoligoster, who feeds on the shadows of its victims. The Hodag, like a spiny-backed bull-horned rhinoceros. The Hoop Snake, which can chase prey at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour and then, with one sting of its tail, cause it to turn purple, swell up, and die. Illustrated throughout, including eight drawings printed with glow-in-the-dark ink, Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods is for every young reader who loves a good scare. The book was originally published in 1910 by William Thomas Cox and is now inspiringly retold by Hal Johnson, author of Immortal Lycanthropes. The creatures are all scales and claws, razor-sharp teeth and stealth, camouflage and single-minded nastiness. Straight out of the era of Paul Bunyan, they speak to an earlier time in American history, when the woods were indeed dark and deep and filled with mystery. The tone is smart and quirky. The illustrations have a sinewy, retro field-guide look. Read them around a campfire, if you dare.

Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods: 20 Chilling Tales from the Wilderness, by Hal Johnson

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Look out for what's lurking around every corner. The book is told from the perspective of a cryptozoologist who focuses on the lumberwoods of North America and who recounts many painful and horrifying incidents he witnessed during his years of seeking the most bizarre creatures. He begins with the very dangerous hodag, a rhinoceros critter with a bull horn and a spiny back. Things don't go well when traveling shysters set up a tent claiming to have captured the fierce hodag. Instead, they regale paying customers with sinister hodag tales and play a recorded hodag sound. Eventually, the real thing ruins their scheme with disastrous consequences. Tales of other creatures, such as the leprocaun, not only deliver vile results but also eerily tickle the funny bone. Another creature featured here is the cactus cat, related to beavers because he was once cornered by a wolverine and forced to run up a tree for safety. Also referred to as a wampus cat, he now has a spiked ball at the end of his tail, which he uses to slash unsuspecting victims who don't realize they are riddled with holes until they eat a meal and it pours out of multiple openings in their bellies. These tales demand to be savored in all their weirdness and gore. The tongue-in-cheek humor will keep readers engaged. Touted as examples of beasts from American folklore, each feral varmint is elaborately illustrated in black and white. The book concludes with a quick go-to guide of fearsome facts to aid in identifying any of these creatures that readers may meet in the wild. A captivating collection for fans of Alvin Schwartz's Scary Tales to Tell in the Dark, this is also ideal for those looking for something fresh, creative, and deliciously creepy. VERDICT Outstanding faux-lore creature tales that will blow away middle school readers.—Julie Shatterly, W. A. Bess Elementary School, Gastonia, NC

Review  “These are stories to be read late at night to an audience willing to be surprised, startled, and kept up wondering about what might lurk nearby.” – Publishers Weekly, starred review "Wildly imaginative and delightfully macabre."—Booklist, starred review “A folk treasure as well as required reading for hikers, trail bikers, and would-be cryptid hunters.” – Kirkus, starred review  "A captivating collection for fans of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Tales to Tell in the Dark, this is also ideal for those looking for something fresh, creative, and deliciously creepy. Outstanding faux-lore creature tales that will blow away middle school readers."                  –  School Library Journal, starred review "A darkly comic Poe-like bestiary." --Chris Priestley, author of Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror

By KidsReads From the author of the inimitable IMMORTAL LYCANTHROPES comes a collection of true animal weirdness --- FEARSOME CREATURES OF THE LUMBERWOODS, a “reimagining” of the 1910 William T. Cox publication of the same name. Hal Johnson brings a fresh approach to these 20 whimsical beasts --- and also “borrows” from other myths and lore --- and reading these bone-chilling tall tales feels like reading the next generation of Edgar Allan Poe stories.Johnson's first person narrative features a hypothetical cryptozoologist whose research has taken him to the lumberwoods of North America, "a land still wild and untamed at the margin, populated only by lumberjacks and their mortal enemies, the cruel trees that once tyrannized this land—and, of course, by fearsome creatures." His 20 findings go beyond Cox's edition of one-page descriptions by including embellished as well as gruesome reports on those who, more often than not, had less fortunate encounters with the legendary beasts.Replacing the Splinter Cat for another eerie creature known as the Hoop Snake, Johnson holds steadfast to 19 of Cox's original beings. The beastly list ranges from hideously ferocious to adorable (if that's possible). Examples include the kneeless Hugag that is incredibly difficult to hunt or trap; the 13-limbed Gumberoo with its voracious appetite; the gargantuan insect-like Funeral Mountain Terrashot that resembles coffins on unsteady legs; and the supposedly harmless Wapaloosie that feeds exclusively on "canopy fungus."Johnson's ingenious tales would not be complete without the equally ingenious pictorial interpretations of illustrator Tom Mead. Favoring the "otherworldly side of art," Mead's pen and ink depictions are reminiscent of the iconic Maurice Sendak. Unique to Johnson and Mead's collaboration is the overall design of the book, which is not only laced with all things creepy, but also includes glow-in-the-dark scenes so unexpectedly different from the printed images that they would give anyone the creeps once the lights were shut.Johnson closes with an appendix that includes "fearsome" facts as well as a wonderful research section for those interested in learning more about cryptozoology. For starters, check out Cox's 100th anniversary hypertext edition (www.lumberwoods.com/home.htm), which is absolutely fascinating. Many thanks to Johnson for reviving the world of cryptozoology!Reviewed by Anita Lock

Smart, scary By Sally Jersey Smart, scary, fun -- although the separate stories would be outstanding for read-aloud sessions (which is what I planned when I bought the book) my kids read it cover to cover in one sitting on their own, before I even got started. And the illustrations are fantastic, with the glow in the dark feature being especially cool.

Good illustrations, but the glow in the dark doesn't work unless you plan ahead.Another great choice is Alvin Schwartz's "Scary Stories to Read in the Dark."

In the first book he has both written and illustrated, master artist P.J. Lynch brings a Mayflower voyager’s story to vivid life. Catalogue Text158At a young age, John Howland learned what it meant to take advantage of an opportunity. Leaving the docks of London on the Mayflower as an indentured servant to Pilgrim John Carver, John Howland little knew that he was embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. By his great good fortune, John survived falling overboard on the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, and he earned his keep ashore by helping to scout a safe harbor and landing site for his bedraggled and ill shipmates. Would his luck continue to hold amid the dangers and adversity of the Pilgrims’ lives in New England? John Howland’s tale is masterfully told in his own voice, bringing an immediacy and young perspective to the oft-told Pilgrims’ story. P.J. Lynch captures this pivotal moment in American history in precise and exquisite detail, from the light on the froth of a breaking wave to the questioning voice of a teen in a new world.

The Boy Who Fell Off the Mayflower, or John Howland's Good Fortune, by P. J. Lynch

Review Based on historical fact, this feast of a book, the first illustrator Lynch has authored as well, will captivate readers from its opening double-page spread...What sets this book apart from myriad Pilgrim stories is Howland's personal point of view, which helps readers enter into the tenor of the time, when the settlers' religious faith both motivated and sustained them, and the dramatic illustrations with their expert play of expression, composition, and light.Sweeping and grand, this personal take on a familiar story is an engaging success.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Lynch’s meticulous watercolor and gouache illustrations imbue the pages with cinematic energy. The opening birds-eye view of bustling 1620s London allows careful readers to spot a tiny Howland running through muddy streets on a clandestine errand; a later spread shows the Native Americans’ vantage from shadowy woods as they secretly watch the newly arrived Pilgrims. Short chapters with straightforward titles chronologically segment a familiar story that has been personalized through stunning artwork and insightful storytelling.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)The clearly written, first- person account, told from John’s point of view, combines history with adventure and a hint of romance. Based on historical sources, the narrative is laced with well-imagined characterizations and conversations. The book’s wide format showcases Lynch’s dramatic and richly atmospheric watercolor and gouache paintings, which include strong individual character portrayals as well as beautifully composed scenes on land and at sea. This handsome volume offers a dramatic personal story of the Pilgrim’s voyage on the Mayflower and their early experiences in America.—Booklist (starred review)Coupled with richly detailed and often dramatic watercolor and gouache illustrations, Lynch’s fast-paced text brings a new excitement to the Thanksgiving story. An excellent choice for teachers seeking a new approach to the history of the Pilgrims.—School Library Journal (starred review)Mr. Lynch’s first few paintings in this superb picture book so capture the squalor, overcrowding and political danger that the Pilgrims faced in the Old World...—The Wall Street JournalEnhanced by a large format that showcases Lynch’s striking watercolor and gouache illustrations, this fictionalized account of Howland’s story will spark young readers’ interest in learning more about the Wampanaog and English people who encountered one another so long ago.—BookPageHowland’s voice is vibrant and convincing, and Lynch deftly integrates information known about Howland’s future...Lynch’s wa- tercolor paintings harken back to the dramatically composed and illuminated work of N. C. Wyeth.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksP. J. Lynch has written a compelling accounting of young John Howland’s story and the larger story of the Mayflower. The writing is crisp, and the facts are presented in captivating prose. The rich, detailed paintings he uses to illustrate his story evoke times past and steep the readers in Howland’s journey. This is one of the finest middle-grade historical picture books available. Don’t miss it.—San Francisco Book Review

Engaging read for students and lots of ways to use in the classroom By Sunday Cummins Well written and appropriate for 4th grade through even middle school age readers. Told from the perspective of the adolescent John Howland, an indentured servant who made the Mayflower journey. The lengthy text and the detailed illustrations reveal how complex and difficult this journey was - the planning, the leaving, the getting started, the crossing, the arriving, figuring out where to settle, and then the first year. When I finished, I was eager to read the author's notes. How was his research done? What parts do we know to be true for sure and where did he embellish? A map would have been helpful, too. Alas, there was very little except a short note to say that John Howland did exist, he did fall off the Mayflower and he did marry a young girl who also arrived on the Mayflower. My questions beg for more research into the accuracy and authority of this text. That said--I'd still recommend it as an insightful read for students. There's plenty of content for substantive, thought provoking conversations. The text could be used as a mentor for writing from the perspective of someone in a certain time period and as a launch for more research and more.

The story is about my 10th great-grandfather, John Howland, a passenger on the Mayflower. It's a great read for 4th and 5th graders. The pictures are where I was introduced to the paintings of P.J. Lynch...they are spectacular! The fact that this book is about my ancestor makes it that much more exciting. This should be in every middle school so kids can read something exciting that they can relate to concerning the Mayflower.

Lynch, the text is very well researched. Reliable information regarding the background of the Pilgrims, their journey, and their settlement can be found on the internet. http://mayflowerhistory.com, www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/pfmayflower.htm both have very specific information. Primary sources, such as Mourt's Relation:A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, along with Bradford's History of Plymouth Plantation 1606 - 1646, are great resources. Another more recent book, Of Plymouth Plantation, written by Caleb H. Johnson (from William Bradford's history), combines Mourt's Relation & Bradford's history, along with additional maps & notes. Of course, the Silver Books, focusing on individual Pilgrims are very valuable. Nathaniel Philbrick is also a very reliable historian. Three of these books/authors are listed in the book's bibliography. I am descended from Francis Eaton, a carpenter by trade. He may have been the carpenter mentioned in the book who helped to secure the broken beam on the Mayflower. It's exciting that this book was released in time for the holiday season - it will be a Christmas gift for each of our three grown children.
