A Christmas Classic By LT Even if you've already spent your inheritance for this Christmas, why not pick up 4 or 5 of these to pass along to the kids that might not get that much this year. Or,to the parents of those who would love the story, but not quite ready to read it themselves.Or pass this down the line to those who might want 10 or 12. This is going to be a Christmas holiday "Classic."

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Kind of Heart By Don W. Fitzgerald I purchased this book direct from Molly at our high school reunion during the summer, 2003. I knew Molly in high school and remember her as always of high moral character, always happy and fun to be around. I did not know her family but was certain that she came from a fine Christian home. When I began reading her book, I quickly found out why Molly was the type of person I had known previously. What a great family background she grew up in, as characterized in her book. Each chapter got better and better, and once I started reading the book, I finished it quickly, always looking forward to the next chapter. After each chapter, she wrote a thoughtful paragraph and a corresponding Bible verse, each very meaningful and thought-provoking.I liked the book so much that I purchased a dozen copies to give to friends. As soon as that supply is gone, I intend to purchase more. I sincerely recommend this book as one of the best I have ever read.Thank you, Molly, and best wishes always!

The author relates memories of her parents, her siblings and later stories about her own children. She deals with heart rending subjects, as well as humorous and inspirational ones. Walk with Molly Lemmons through the polio years, the dating years, the times of teens, the antics of pets, the blessings of a large family, and finally, the death of a parent. Any reader who has enjoyed "Chicken Soup for the Soul" will love "Kind of Heart." I recommend it!!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Good Lilfe By ELLEN AKIN This is a book of vignettes of life in the southern United States during the Fifites and Sixties. The stories are funny, sad, wise, and heart-warming. The author details her "trials" at the hands of parents who care; the pangs of young love; the warmth of a large immediate and extended family; the joy of partenthood. Far too few people - then and now - have the advantage of a happy and secure childhood. If you would like to share Ms. Lemmons', this is a wonderful book.

Read Ebook Things Get Rearranged: How E. Dudley Parsons and His Passion for Justice Sent Me from Minnesota to Moscow, by Janet Mackey

As a child, Janet Parsons Mackey witnessed her grandfather’s passion for progressive politics, civil rights, and the Russian Revolution. Lively debates on justice and politics were commonplace.

Then came the Red Scare and the oppressive paranoia of the McCarthy era. Silence replaced conversation and discussion for many in her family, distancing them from a grandfather who continued to express his views through meetings, speeches, and newspaper columns. E. Dudley Parsons was never complacent—and never silenced.

Things Get Rearranged represents author Parsons Mackey’s attempt to understand her grandfather, his values, and his passion for justice. Personal recollections mix with the man’s own writing to form a rich tapestry of his remarkable life.

Through her grandfather, Parsons Mackey first became aware of equal rights for people of color, the need for fair wages, free speech, and open debate. She sees his influence not only in her life but also in those of his great-grandchildren, who retain his interest in politics and Russia.

Join Parsons Mackey as she traces the complex transmission of ideas, values, and traditions through a multigenerational family, restoring her grandfather to his rightful place as a powerful influence on future generations.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. for good and for ill By Ramona R. Don't we all have a problematic relative, one that strikes sparks within the family and perhaps also in public? The author has taken one of those challenging family members, her grandfather, and examined his influence, for good and for ill, on her and other members of her family, including her own children and grandchildren. She helps us understand and empathize with his passions, even when they are misguided, and to appreciate the strength of his character and his desire to make his life count for causes he believes are worthwhile. The author traces her own maturing perspective in relation to her grandfather, first portraying him through her childish eyes and eventually looking back on him as a mature adult. This is a fascinating study that reflects the political turmoil of our country, from the McCarthy Era to today's questions about electronic surveillance.

The other reason is that I share her fascination with Russia and its culture. This was a great memoir--portrayed some very moving personal history set against the context of national and world events. I learned a lot about US history as well.

Also my late husband spoke of the "pure" communism that his father liked probably as much as Janet's grandfather. I found it all very fascinating.

Delightful, insightful and simply FULL of ideas By Laura Crowley I read extensively, including many parenting books, and although I do nearly all of my reading from library books, I am very glad I purchased Raising Freethinkers, as I know I will be referring to it repeatedly over the years I'll be raising my children. As a nonreligious parent among a largely religious extended family, I both appreciated the sense of community I felt (I'm not the only one!), but also the sense of respectfulness for religious folks evident in the book's tone. All the chapters come from a place of deep regard for children's capacity to learn and think for themselves, and highlight how exciting an adventure it can be to raise kids free from indoctrination. I love the ideas for encouraging scientific reasoning and critical thinking, as well as ethical living.Since reading this book, we've modeled the scale of our solar system, read creation stories from around the world, found a way to support our daughter in her quandary with the Girl Scout pledge, discovered new ways to answer questions about death, found ways to handle interactions with religious family members, and uncovered a vast new list of kids' books we plan to read as a family. And this is just what I can remember off the top of my head. There are extensive resource lists and activity ideas at the end of each section.Raising Freethinkers is simply fantastic, and unlike anything else I've found out there. I most strongly recommend it.

I cannot say enough good things about Dale McGowan and the books he has written for nonreligious parents. This book didn't disappoint. The extensive list of resources and suggestions in Raising Freethinkers is invaluable. How to really give your child religious literacy without indoctrination, how to deal with death, handling the stages of moral development-it's all here. This and Parenting Beyond Belief will now be in every baby shower gift I buy for my nonreligious friends.

44 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Valuable for Parents with Agnostic or Unconventional Spiritual Beliefs Also By L. Erickson Although the primary target for this book is atheist or secular humanist parents, I do not fall into that category, but still found this book very valuable. I consider myself 'spiritual but not religious', and therefore am confronting many of the same themes as secular parents, in terms of trying to help my children navigate the social and cultural forces often tied to religion, and trying to build a sense of community and family rituals without organized religion as a guide. This book offers lots of parent questions, exercises, practical advice, and resources for fostering religious literacy, developing an ethical foundation not tied to religion, dealing with relatives and friends with traditional religious beliefs, and developing family rituals and frameworks for helping kids deal with the life passages and death outside of a conventional religious framework. It is not a dogmatic atheist book, and is more oriented around developing tolerance and curiousity regarding religion and spiritual issues, so I was very comfortable with most of it.In addition to the topics already mentioned, I liked the first 'Inquiring Mind' chapter, which I think any parent should read, in order to more deeply consider the ramifications of feeding your kids your own answers to life questions, and how to best foster a sense of curiosity and 'freethinking' in them. I did have issues with some of the themes and exercises that seemed to equate freethinking automatically with rationality or current scientific thinking, as for me these too have their limitations, but I think the message on those can be tweaked. So, if you are grappling with unconventional spiritual beliefs, and how to parent your child within those, and/or how to best prepare them for dealing with a religious society, this book is worth a look.

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she's never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can't stand him, and she's pretty sure he can't stand the sight of her....

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. She has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane's disdain; therefore she's unprepared for the reality that is Duane's insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica's muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau's magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-headed heart is she willing to risk?

A Great New Series By Jenn I had to read this book slowly and not because it required it but because my schedule of travel, school and home required that I not read it like I wished and like it called for me too. Though I think now the forced slow down of reading it was a blessing because I got to savor it. For over 2 weeks I got to read about Duane and Jessica and their love and it was amazing. This book reads quickly, so you don’t even realize how much of it you have read until you look down at the page number/percentage.This book like all Penny books gives you something unique. There is humor, light heartedness, depth and a little education. I love that about Penny Reid’s books. Even more so I love that each character is unique and not a copy of another from past stories or even within the same book. The one similarity I find in her characters is between the female leads and that is this:They are SMARTThey are STRONGThey are REALI love that fact and it always leaves me coming back for more. This book is the first in a spin off series from her Knitting in the City Series and all began because of book #4 in KitC, Beauty and the Mustache. It was there we were first introduced to the Tennessee brothers known as the Winston brothers. They are all bearded and unique in their own way (I can’t wait for Cleatus’s book). These boys might be raised in the Tennessee hills but they are anything but hillbillies. They are intelligent, soulful, respectful men and reading about them is an amazing adventure. So what does this book give you? Sexy Gandalf, Truth or Dare, Biker troubles, sweetness, honesty, family drama and family love, Steam and an appreciation for muscle cars, good men, good women and sadly some not so nice people (like the real world).Truth of Beard was a home run for me and I am now eager more than ever to read more about the Winston brothers and to find out more about this family.

One can trust Penny Reid to be brave enough to deviate so far from the usual darkly handsome hero****RED HEADED & BEARDED HERO*** whoop!!!!Positives:1. Loved Duane's description. His manly career (a man who works with his hands doing real herd labour **swoon**) - makes a change from the suited business types or the biker criminal types.2. Loved the sample - the way Jess hates Duane but mistakenly assumes he is his twin was hot.3. Loved Jess's LOTR obsession. Who wouldn't want to be Gandalf?----------------------------------------------Negatives1. SURPLUS of INNER MONOLOGUES - it's tedious reading about a person's every emotional feeling.2. Jess was a quirky LOTR-fan interesting character to begin with but transforms into your typical blonde beautiful, angst-y hormonal silly cliché after the sample finishes.3. Too much swooning and insta-lust.4. They fell in love without any build-up. At the beginning she hates him with a passion - then the next day loves him with a passion (and constantly wants to get into his pants).5. Surplus of characters and subplots that focused on setting the next set of books for the series that that it compromised the plot.6. The plot wasn't anything special and dragged. I skipped to the end.7. I loved Duane he's a redhead and has a beard - BUT - his constant emotion sharing, angst over Jess etc was off-putting. He was emasculated t times.Penny's other hero's generally tend to be reserved.8. Chemistry sizzles out a few pages after the sample.9. Most of the times - we are told how they feel - but I didn't feel the connection.10. Didn't like the scene at the race where Jess goes crazy in lust for Duane (it happens so quickly) to the point she's acting like a race bunny - it didn't make sense and just didn't add to the book.----------------------------------------------Not a bad book, but not as good as Penny Reid's first book. I think if the:(i)love-hate relationship continued past the sample;(ii) a slow-build-up of emotions rather than insta-love/lust;(iii) the focus was on Jess and Duane (rather than setting the next set of the series); and(iv) there was more banter, chemistry, quirkiness and plotit would have scored a 5* from me.

But being back in Green Valley means having to cross paths with the Winston brother again, especially Beau, who renders her completely speechless. But when she finds out that she was actually making out with his twin Duane Winston - who, incidentally, she can't stand - things change. Considerably. What I loved about this book:The wonderful male MCThe Winston brotherPenny Reid's humor-laden writingWhat I felt needed improvement:The story was missing an epilogueThe female MC was a bit wishy-washyThe story stalled after the 50-60% markHaving read a couple of Penny Reid books so far, I knew I wanted to give Truth Or Beard a chance, let alone for the cheesy cover, which, along with the title made it sound quite intriguing."I wondered if we would disagree about the color of the sky on our date, fall into our old habit of debating and making mountains out of molehills. The possibility was exciting."From the first page on, I fell in love with Penny Reid's writing style. It was extremely funny (the main characters have a brand of self-deprecation that is just too good to be true) and at the same time, it was hot. I was extremely giddy when reading this book and in the beginning, there wasn't a single page that could get a chuckle out of me. The relationship between Duane and Jessica was special, since they hated each other being kids, and now that they bump into each other again, they have this incredibly hot mutual attraction to each other, it's insane. But, you know, given the fact that they still have the urge to pick on each other all the time, there is some wonderful (and funny) chemistry between them."Did I want to kiss the hell out of him? Yes, I did. Did I want to wrap his banana and let him have his way with my coconuts? Yes. I wanted that to happen."I absolutely loved Duane. I am not into beards, or redheads, but I would have liked to see him in the flesh. He was the perfect male MC for this book: grumpy and reserved on the outside, yet a real gentleman when you get to know him. I was less impressed with Jessica just because - despite all her efforts - she really did seem like a flake. There's nothing wrong with wanting to explore the world, but it was like she was talking the talking more than she would walk the walk - she's basically living off her parents until she has enough money to travel...And then, for some reason, around the 50% mark, the book started stalling, or at least moving forward extremely slowly. From then on, it took me ages to finish Truth Or Beard . The book revolves around two main intrigues (the main characters relationship and Duane's trouble with a local biker gang), and they just suddenly become boring, even though they get tied up quite nicely in the end.In the end, I was a bit disappointed that there were a couple of things in this story that just didn't add up. Actually, it's not that they didn't add up, it's more that some things were left with loose ends at the end of the story. Let's take for example the story around Jessica's aunt. It's not going to spoil anything when I tell you that it turns out her aunt is actually her mother. It's not going to spoil anything because that piece of information comes up in the story but has absolutely no impact on it whatsoever. And than there's this story around the biker guy, Repo, who I am sure is somehow related to Jessica, but the matter is only being hinted at, and not picked up. And yeah... there was just no real epilogue here, so this was a major disappointment. But thankfully, there was one aspect of the book I enjoyed the heck out: I loved the side characters. Well, the Winston Brothers, that is! They were all incredibly adorable and charming, and added a whole lot of flair to the book. I can't wait to hear Beau's story, because he is the corny and foodie one! At the end of the book, we get a sneak peak at the next book in the series, which will be Jethro's story. But again, this yielded disappointment. I didn't mind reading about Jethro next, but I was convinced he was pining after Claire (Jessica's friend), and that the story revolved around that.Anyway, I'll be giving this one a try (it's called Grin And Beard It ) hoping it will have the same spirit and humour and that it is going to be a little more polished where side stories are concerned. Now that would make it perfect.

Here is the newest title in Barron's delightful Ella Bella series! In this story, Ella's kindly ballet teacher, Madame Rosa, has given the children costumes to wear as her magical music box pours out a shimmering tune. "This is A Midsummer Night's Dream by Felix Mendelssohn," she says, as she tells the children about the Shakespearean story that inspired Mendelssohn's ballet. When Madame Rosa is through, she asks all of her little ballerinas to "dance like fairies!" When everyone else goes off to change, Ella stays behind for just one more fairy dance…and finds herself transported into the story of A Midsummer Night's Dream. There, she meets Puck, the mischievous fairy, and Oberon, King of Fairyland. Oberon asks Puck to help him win back the heart of Titania, his fairy queen. Puck, in turn, enlists Ella to help him in his midsummer mischief. This charming story is beautifully illuminated by James Mayhew's whimsical, lovely, and colorful illustrations. A brief passage at the back of the book tells the story of William Shakespeare's beloved comedy. It also includes some interesting facts about Felix Mendelssohn and his sparkling, scurrying, enchanting music.
