A thrilling sequel By Liviania I talked to a friend lately who was afraid to read the Lockwood & Co. series, because it might tarnish her memories of the Bartimaeus trilogy. I understand the impulse. You don't want to suddenly realize that the things you loved in childhood were stupid and silly and subpar. But I tried to reassure her that there was no fear. THE SCREAMING STAIRCASE was a wonderful ghost story that very much deserved its Cybils win.THE WHISPERING SKULL picks up shortly after THE SCREAMING STAIRCASE leaves off. It's been just long enough for Lucy, Lockwood, and George to get in a spot of trouble. They might have resolved a major haunting and, in Lucy's case, made unprecedented contact with a Visitor, but they still have to pay the bills. And there's always a chance of things going wrong when you're a group of kids facing off with the restless dead.I liked how THE WHISPERING SKULL further developed the world of Lockwood & Co. The divergence from our world goes on to before the dead started rising, as proved by a paranormal artifact that begins wreaking havoc. I also felt like THE WHISPERING SKULL was much clearer about when it was set, something I had trouble with in THE SCREAMING STAIRCASE.My main problem with THE WHISPERING SKULL is that it focuses quite a bit on George, who I find least interesting of the main trio. I normally adore bookworm characters, but I have little patience for how he has a tendency to put others in danger. At the same time, I like that Stroud isn't afraid to have his main characters be abrasive. You don't have to like someone to enjoy their story.THE WHISPERING SKULL, like THE SCREAMING STAIRCASE, leaves off with a major revelation. It looks like the third book will explore the mysteries of Lockwood's past. I'd be sure to read it even without that hook. I thoroughly enjoy the spooky world of these books and Lucy's wry narration. She's one of the practical heroines of my heart.

This might actually make them do it. It is very rare that I rate a book intended for youths with five stars. Honestly, most of them seem to be lacking any real plot, world or character building, etc. That is not the case with this series."The Whispering Skull" begins a bit after the last book ended, and continues to frighten and please with the sarcastic humour, most excellent descriptions of the setting and characters and leaves the reader wondering the entire book what is about to happen next. This book is full of surprises and twists and the pace is quick, so there is no time to lose interest.If you were to take all the best ghosts from all the classic stories (think Charles Dickens) and put them into a modern tale, you might get a general idea of how cool the haunts in this book are. I loved that the author was so inventive in his spooks and the way they behave (or misbehave as the case may be.)I can't imagine a child picking this book up and not falling in love with it. The quality of writing is good enough to keep an adult entertained, but kids are sure to enjoy this. Jonathan Stroud has a unique knack for figuring out what terrifies us and makes us laugh and how to combine the two in equal measure.I love this book, and this series. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant By Kendra Jonathan Stroud cannot write a sequel soon enough. Lockwood & Co. is my new favorite series. Stroud has taken a little bit of Sherlock Holmes and a lot of John Bellairs and thrown them together to create a captivating, horrific, and witty mystery. Stroud's dry wit, (which is sometimes of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind) is not overused. The characters, thrust into a truly fantastic world where ghosts are real and only children can save us, are completely believable.Lockwood, Lucy and George are truly a team, though even Lucy admits that they don't include George enough in the actual action. All three have their flaws, but are saved by the strengths of the other team members. In The Whispering Skull, we learn a huge cliff-hanging secret about Lockwood. We see what George is truly capable of when pushed. And we see how important loyalty and family are to Lucy.Though maybe not as scary as the first book, The Whispering Skull, gives the reader a lot of shivering, hold your breath, moments, where once again the scariest, most dangerous things in the world are the actual people and not the ghosts.A must read.
