About the Author

Carol Marinelli recently filled in a form asking for her job title. Thrilled to be able to put down her answer, she put writer. Then it asked what Carol did for relaxation and she put down the truth - writing. The third question asked for her hobbies. Well, not wanting to look obsessed she crossed the fingers on her hand and answered swimming but, given that the chlorine in the pool does terrible things to her highlights – I’m sure you can guess the real answer.

New York Times Bestselling author Maisey Yates lives in rural Oregon with her three children and her husband, whose chiseled jaw and arresting features continue to make her swoon. She feels the epic trek she takes several times a day from her office to her coffee maker is a true example of her pioneer spirit.

Technically, Libby Tennent lied. She had made it through the gold glass revolving doors and had walked across the impressive marble floor and was just at the elevators when a uniformed security guard halted her and asked where she was going. 'I have an appointment with Mr Zverev,' Libby said.'Perhaps you do, but before you can take the elevator, first you have to sign in at Reception.''Oh, of course,' Libby responded airily, trying to look as if she had simply forgotten the procedure.Everything about the place was imposing. It was a luxurious Mayfair address and, even before the taxi had pulled up at the smart building, Libby had realised that getting in to see Daniil Zverev might not prove the cinch that her father had insisted it would be.Libby walked over to the reception desk and repeated her story to a very good-looking receptionist, saying that she had an appointment to see Mr Zverev, silently hoping that the woman wouldn't notice that the appointment was, in fact, for her father, Lindsey Tennent.'And your name?''Ms Tennent.' Libby watched as the receptionist typed in the details and saw that her eyes narrowed just a fraction as she looked at the computer screen. 'One moment, please.'She picked up the phone and relayed the information. 'I have a Ms Tennent here. She says that she has an appointment with Mr Zverev.' There was a moment's pause and then she looked at Libby. 'Your first name?''Libby,' she said, but then, realising that given the way the security was in this place she was likely to be asked for official ID, she amended, 'Short for Elizabeth.'Libby tried to appear calm and avoided curling a stray strand of her blond hair around her finger or tapping her feet, as she did not want to appear nervous. She was nervous, though. Well, not so much nervous, more uncomfortable that she had agreed to do this.Maybe she wouldn't have to because the receptionist shook her head as she replaced the phone. 'Mr Zverev cannot see you.''Excuse me?' Libby blinked, not only at the refusal but that it came with no apology or explanation. 'What do you mean, I have—?''Mr Zverev only sees people by strict appointment and, Ms Tennent, you don't have one.''But I do.'The receptionist shook her head. 'It is a Mr Lindsey Tennent who has a 6:00 p.m. appointment. If he was unable to make it then he should have called ahead to see if sending a replacement was suitable—Mr Zverev doesn't just see anyone.'Libby knew when she was beaten. She had rather hoped they might not notice the discrepancy—as most places wouldn't. She was almost tempted to apologise for the confusion and leave, but her father had broken down in tears when he'd asked her to do this for him. Knowing just how much was riding on this meeting, she forced herself to stand her ground. She pulled herself as tall as her petite five-foot-three frame would allow and looked the receptionist squarely in the eye.'My father was involved in an car accident earlier today, which is the reason that he couldn't make it, and sent me as a replacement. Now, can you please let Mr Zverev know that I'm here and ready to meet with him? He knows very well the reason for my visit, or perhaps you'd like me to clarify that here?'The receptionist glanced at whoever was standing behind Libby and then to the left of her. Clearly Libby had a small audience. The receptionist must have decided that the foyer wasn't the place to discuss the great man's business because she gave a tight shrug.'One moment.'Another phone call was made, though out of Libby's earshot, and eventually the immaculate woman returned and gave Libby a visitor's pass. Finally she was permitted past the guarded barrier that existed around Daniil Zverev. The elevator door was held open for her and she stepped in.Even the elevator was luxurious. The carpet was thick beneath her feet. There was no piped music, just cool air and subdued lighting, which was very welcome on a hot summer evening after a mad dash across London to get here. She should never have let her father talk into this, she thought. In fact, she hadn't. When Libby had said yes to trying to persuade this man to come along to his parents' fortieth wedding anniversary celebration, it had been a Daniel Thomas she had expected to be meeting. But just as she had been about to leave her father had called her back.'Oh, there's something I forgot to tell you.'Her father, who had been begging Libby to the point of tears, had then looked a touch uncomfortable and evasive. 'He goes under a different name now.''Sorry?' Libby had had no idea what he was talking about.'Or rather it would seem that Daniel Thomas has recently reverted to his real name—Daniil Zverev. He was adopted.''Well, if he's gone back to his birth name, clearly there's a serious rift. I'm not going to interfere…''Libby, please,' her father begged. 'All Zverev has to do is show up and make a speech.'A speech? The list of demands for Daniil had again increased. Show up, dance with aunts, be sociable, and now she had to ask him to make a speech! No, Libby was not comfortable with this at all. She lived in her own dreamy bubble where the role of negotiator didn't exist. She was very forthright, in that she had an expressive face and a tendency to say what she was thinking. She also, to her parents' disquiet, had always refused to quietly toe the line.'You never said anything about him having to make a speech.''Can you just talk to him for me, Libby? Please!'Why the hell had she said yes?Of course, she had looked Daniil up on her taxi ride here. Her father had said that face-to-face he was sure that Libby would be able to appeal to his conscience but it would seem, from her brief skim through several articles, that the esteemed financier previously known as Daniel Thomas didn't have one.It was, one article observed, as if he saw everyone as the opposition and would step over whomever he had to if it meant he achieved his aim.As for women—well, it would take far longer than a thirty-minute taxi ride to read up on that part of his history! The word heartbreaker was thrown around a lot. User. From what Libby could glean, his longest, for the want of a word, relationship had been a two-week affair with a German supermodel, who had been left devastated by their sudden ending.Well, what did these women expect? Libby had thought when she'd read how some considered the break-up to have been cruel. Why would anyone ever get involved with him?Libby had never been one for one-night stands but it would seem Daniil Zverev was a master of them. She was cautious in relationships, never quite believing men who said that her dancing wouldn't get in the way and that they had no issue with the hours she devoted to her art.Always she had been proved right to be cautious. Invariably the reasons for the break-ups were the same—that she was obsessed with ballet, self-absorbed and hardly ever free to go out.Correct.She'd told them the same at the start.Libby got back from dwelling on her disastrous love life to trying to fathom Daniil.Surprisingly, there had been little made of his name change—it was as if even the press was wary of broaching certain topics around him.So, too, was Libby. She certainly didn't relish the prospect of asking him to play 'happy families.'Of course, she felt like David going into face Goliath as she came out of the elevator and walked along a corridor, only to face another seriously beautiful woman who ran her eyes over Libby as she approached the desk.'I'm here to see Mr Zverev,' Libby said, but her smile wasn't returned.'Perhaps you would like to freshen up before you go through.''Oh, I'm fine, thank you.' Libby shook her head—she really just wanted to get this over and done with.'You will find the ladies' room just down the hall and to your right.'To her sudden embarrassment Libby realised that it was being suggested, and strongly so, that she needed to tidy herself up.Could the great Daniil Zverev only lay eyes on perfect people? Was he only prepared to hold court with women at their coiffed best? She held back the smart retort, though, and instead, blushing to her roots, took herself off to the ladies room. As she stepped inside and saw herself in a full-length mirror she was, though she would never admit it, rather grateful for the advice to take a little time before seeing Daniil. It was a warm and windy August day and she had the hair to prove it.Determined to keep practising and to maintain her skills, without the delicious routine of dance class and rehearsals, Libby had been home, warming up, when word had come in that her father had been involved in a car accident. Of course, she had just pulled on some leggings and a wrap over her leotard, grabbed her workbag and raced to the accident and emergency department. Her head was still spinning with all her father had revealed that afternoon. The family business was in serious trouble and they needed this anniversary party to go ahead next month. For that to happen, though, Daniil's acceptance of his parents' invitation must be secured.Libby couldn't think about her father's business troubles now.She went through her huge bag and pulled out a fresh ivory wrap and put that on over her leotard and changed from leggings into a grey tube skirt. Her blonde hair was already tied back but messy so she brushed and retied it and pinned it up. Her face was devoid of make-up and she looked far younger than her twenty-five years. Somehow she didn't think fresh-faced would appeal to such a sophisticated man but Libby didn't have an awful lot in her make-up bag to work with. Some mascara made her blue eyes look bigger and she added some lip gloss too. She'd just have to do.Libby knew she didn't stand a hope with him. A man who had cut ties with his family so dramatically that he'd changed his name was hardly going to want to turn things around on her say-so.And, anyway, Libby was the last person to tell someone else what they should do.She, herself, didn't like free advice. She'd be working in the family business if she did.Resigned to being sent away even before she'd got out the first sentence almost took away the fear of meeting him.Yes, she'd just say what she had to and then walk away. She would not allow herself to be intimidated.Snooty Pants at Reception must have deemed Libby looked suitable now because she picked up the phone and informed him that his 6:00 p.m. appointment was here. 'However, as I said it is—' He must have interrupted her because she didn't finish explaining again that it was Libby rather than Lindsey who was there. 'I'll send her in.'As Libby finally went to head for the door it would seem that she'd jumped the mark.'You can leave your bag here.'She was about to decline but again she realised it wasn't a suggestion so she put her bag down and headed for the door. As she was about to raise her arm she was halted.'Don't knock, it irritates him. Just go straight through.' Libby felt like knocking just for the hell of it! And knocking again. And then knocking again. The thought made her smile.Widely! And that was how he first saw her.Smiling at some secret joke, because, Daniil knew, nothing his PA would have said would have put her at ease. She was a dancer. He knew that not just from her attire but from her posture as she closed the door behind her, and she was fighting her dancer's gait as she walked a little way towards him and then paused. As she stepped in Libby blinked. She was standing in a postcard view of London. She might just as well have bought a ticket for the London Eye, though there would never have been someone quite as delicious sitting opposite her there! He had dark hair, dark eyes and pale skin and there was a livid scar across his left cheekbone. He sat straight in his seat at a very large desk, watching her with mild interest.Despite the huge office, despite the vast space, he looked so formal and imposing that he owned every inch of it.'Thank you for agreeing to see me, Mr Zverev,' she said, while privately, such was his impact, she rather wanted to turn and run.'My, my, Mr Tennent,' Daniil said. 'What a high, clear voice you have.'His own voice was deep and his words were dipped and richly coated in a chocolaty Russian accent, and as she realised he was alluding to the appointment being with her father her smile stretched further and she lost her fear.'And, oh, Mr Tennent,' Daniil continued, his eyes taking in her slender bare legs, 'what smooth skin you have.'She stood before him and, no, Libby wasn't scared in the least. Still she smiled.'I think we both know, Mr Zverev…' she started, and then halted as she properly met those cold grey eyes that pierced her. She sent a silent apology to the women she had so merrily scorned for getting involved with him. She had never understood women who could simply leap into bed with a man but she had to wrestle to hold on to her conscience, for he was so beautiful, his stare so intense and so sexy that he could possibly have had her then. She had to clear her throat so she could continue speaking, and she had to recall their words just to find her thread.Yes, that's right…'I think we both know, Mr Zverev,' Libby said, 'that you 're the big bad wolf!'

By dropsydot This is such a fantastic book I hate to write anything and ruin it for the reader. So all I am going to say is take Danill Zverev a ruthless man set in his way, people follow his rules and he answers to no one. Ballet teacher Libby Tennent is the complete opposite and when they meet its the like the sun coming out on a rainy day, such a lovely book. There is such depth to the story and both have their own deep secrets and pain but what a journey you have and the chemistry between them is amazing. A stand alone book but part of a quartet and I can hardly wait for the rest. Absolutely loved it not pass this one up.

The hero was emotionally inept, he had suffered from the time he was put in the orphanage in Russia with only his twin as family. Four boys that bonded because they were orphaned. Daniil, his brother, Roman, the nerd, Sev and Nickolai. They were there for each other. Circumstances

Libby challenged Daniil every step of the way.Daniil never got close to people. He had been in an orphanage until he was 12. There was 4 boys that bonded together. It was Daniil, and his twin brother Roman, and Nikolai, and Sevastyan. Daniil was adopted, and he lost contact with the other boys. Not by his choice. His letters never got mailed, and he never received mail after he was adopted. His own adopted family didn't understand Daniil, and I don't think they tried. He felt like he was damaged goods. The first time he met Libby, he knew there was something special about her. He told her he did NOT do commitments. Each time they parted, he intended it to be forever, yet, he couldn't stay away from Libby. I loved the way Libby fought for what she wanted, and taught Daniil what it meant to be in a relationship.Sample from chapter 11 - "I want flowers, I want conversation, I want phone calls and texts, and presents..." He went to open his mouth but she got there first. "And before you accuse me of demanding expensive gifts, that's not what I mean. I'm tired of living on a knife edge. It's not all about whether you want to see me again, Daniil. It's about whether or not I want to see you, too, and if you can't be bothered to pick up your phone and ask about my day then I don't want you a part of it anymore."I won't spoil the story for you, but it is a refreshing, wonderful book.

An event that marks many marriages By Author Matthew Robert Payne I have not been one that has read my short stories, but with that being said, this one left an impact on me. I could feel my heart racing and my hopes being built and was happy with the way that it all came together. Shari was a way with words. As a writer myself, I would not be able to come up with the words that were used in this book. Though the book was short, the characters left a mark on me especially Lili and the way that she was described. If you have a spare twenty minutes and you want to look at the kind of life and events that are happening all around the globe, all the time and be swept away with one story, then this is for you.I commend it to you

By ScotFlower I bought the cards to use in a unit on light and shadows... because I felt putting images on the wall would be very engaging and a good introduction to the topic of study. But the set ended up being useful in SO many others ways.First, the cards can be used with a light to create bright images on the wall if the room is darkened. I tried it out and it works really well. I don't trust that the provided light will last that long, but any flashlight should do. This can be a fun way to practice names of objects, letter sounds, and even do a puppet-like show. I can even see doing it in a tent while camping, in a classroom with the lights dimmed, with homeschool kids down in the dark basement during the heat of summer, at bedtime, etc.Second, the punch outs can be used as name what object makes the shadow, as a sorting game of the different types of animals (birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals), and there are a lot of other odd shapes that would be great pieces for making a mosaic/modern art project.Third, the cards can be used stencils for tracing scenes on paper then coloring or decorating the scenes. Since there are so many objects shown, you could make quite a number of themed scenes (examples: the umbrella, boy, girl stencils plus cotton balls as the clouds to make a rainy day... or an underwater scenes stenciling all sorts of sea creatures then using tissue paper to make the seaweeds.) Honestly the possibilities are pretty extensive.VERY VERY pleased with the item except for three things.... first, the backing on the cards tries to come off espcailly when you are trying to take out the punched pieces. Second, I think the card should have been a slightly stronger cardboard for longevity especially with the stenciling. Third, I wish the images of objects and letters were done in as few sections as possible - too often the divisions were not necessary (for ample the jellyfish was divided into 3 pieces when the octopus was only one piece). A single whole cutout object works better for both the light show and punch out usages.Overall, for only $5 bucks or so that is ALOT of possibilities.

The best part is I just received it in the mail today and read it to him tonight before bed and he loved it. The books goes to the Itsy Bitsy Spider rhythm and is full of colorful illustrations that are perfect for a toddler. Overall, I was a huge fan and can see myself reading this book to my son over and over again.

Her face completely lit up when she saw the colorful pages. She insisted we read it 5 times in a row. Not only are the pictures adorable, but the story is a nice one too. I can see it being her favorite for awhile. Definitely recommend even up to 3 years old!

It's the classic one-night stand: Beach wedding, bridesmaid, groom's friend. When Andrea and Damon meet, sparks fly, and they give in to the attraction. Sounds simple, but Andrea's still getting over someone, and Damon thought he'd be hooking up with another person that night. It could still be simple, really, if they chalk it up to a weekend tryst and move on. But one night becomes lunch the week after, and then dinner the next weekend...and before they know it, Andrea and Damon are still together, dealing with the feelings they know they might still have for other people. How hard can it be to get exactly what you want? How do you even know what it is? ***Andrea and Damon met in prequel short story WEDDING NIGHT STAND, but this book can be read as a standalone.***

By April C. - binibinidotnet ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review. What You Wanted is everything I never thought I would like. Maybe it’s because Damon and Andrea started on a weird footing with their one-night stand stuff on the wedding of Andrea’s sister. I was never a fan of that because it’s just too awkward but reading about it is another thing, right? Mina’s Wedding Night Stand (where Damon and Andrea started) was OK for me. So here we are now!Damon. I loved him because I mean what’s not to love? He’s such a nice guy, funny at times, has boy-next-door vibe and he kind of already knew what he wanted, how much he wanted Andrea, even just from the beginning. Plus, I loved that he was just always there for Andrea, you know? Like, one call/text from Andrea, count on him to be there—anytime, anywhere. He’s that kind of guy. Now, I feel like hugging him again. I also loved how much he knew things about Andrea—things that even her family doesn’t know about her. He’s also kind of perfect because he wasn’t carrying some ugly baggage from the past that could taint whatever he had with Andrea. Ohh wait! There was one! More on that later.Andrea. I admit I didn’t like her in the beginning because she’s inconsistent. Like she didn’t know who to pick between her one-night stand fling Damon or her best friend/kind of ex, but not really an ex, Thad. (You know which team I’m on, right?) Because apparently, she had feelings for Thad but Thad being himself, after what happened to the trip that only the of them knew, settled down with another woman. (What. A. D*ck.) And by the way, Andrea stupidly thought there was something going on between her and Thad after that trip. But other than that, she’s one of my favorite heroines out there because not all people could be, could act, like her. She had this What you think of me is none of my business. If I know, you’re just freaking jealous vibe that makes me think she’s the epitome of a #ConfidentlyBeautiful woman. I mean, she seemed a little bit lost at times because that’s what false hopes do to you but overall, even when she had her fair share of one-night stands even before and that may come a little off to others, she just didn’t let that go to her head. She’s the kind of person who faces her own fears with her head up high (and maybe even flips her hair and sashays her hips like she’s Miss Universe), doesn’t back down to challenges and listens to what her family says. Well, mostly. And I admire her for that. Her bond with her sister Julie, is also another thing that I love. They’re complete opposite when it comes to relationships but I love that the respect between them is very present. Julie does what she does and so does Andrea. They may not like the decisions of one another but they are not the kind of people who force things to one another just because they’re sisters.Damon and Andrea together is just too perfect. The love they had wasn’t something instant but it was there and still took them by surprise. Well, at least for Andrea. It was just a shame that she couldn’t see that at first because of Thad and Geraldine, the woman Damon went after for two years. But I’m so thankful that Mina throw them both out there to make things a little dramatic. Geraldine. I never liked her but after learning what she went through, I get it. I perfectly understood where she’s coming from. (In my opinion, she may even deserve her own book. Hi Mina! Haha!) But Thad. His sorry a$$ may rot in h*ll and I wouldn’t even give a damn. Like I said, our main characters are already perfect but the presence of those two secondary characters was placed perfectly to bring out the conflicts of the story. And that’s another factor of a good book, right? Conflict and how they could make or break things. In this case, it made things well. What You Wanted is the perfect blend of choosing what and who matters, simple and complicated, light and heavy all at once. Both Andrea and Damon deserved their HEAs.I would’ve complained to the lack of steamy scenes on this book and at first, I wondered why, but after putting the book down because I was done reading it, I realized why. That sudden realization made me think of just how amazing Mina has progressed in honing her craft. I mean, her Manila/Philippine-based books stay true to its setting and overall feel. You will read about that a lot in her local-based books. The same thing goes for her US-based books which are, well, you know… so freaking hot. But that just shows Mina’s talent to bring out the uniqueness of every book she writes. You read her Chic Manila books, then you get fade-to-black, nothing too explicit s*x scenes because Philippines would never be… Western-ish. But then if you’re into really hot, you’ll need a fan books, well, she has Addison Hill series for that. Don’t you just love how wide her selections now for different target readers? I freaking love it! That just solidifies that Filipino authors can. And I couldn’t be more proud of them right now.

I’ve read some of Mina’s Spotlight New Adult books and liked them enough, but there was something that felt like coming home when she’s writing something based in Manila again. And it helped that I read and liked the prequel to this book, Wedding Night Stand, so I was pretty excited to have first dibs on this book.Andrea met Damon at her sister’s wedding. It was just supposed to be a one-night stand, but days and weeks after the wedding, Andrea finds herself seeking out Damon, seeing and spending more time with him. But it’s not a completely simple romance as both of them have issues of their own: Damon is pining over Geraldine, known as the ice queen who he has been pursuing for a while, and Andrea is still nursing a broken heart from Thad, who dropped her after a weekend together and got married to someone else. Andrea and Damon agreed to use each other to get what they want…but what do they really want, anyway?I wasn’t even halfway through and I was already charmed by Andrea and Damon, and I was rooting for the two of them to get what they wanted, whatever that was! I mean, I sort of knew what it was, being the reader, but I had such a good time watching things unfold for the two of them. I was a little surprised with how some of Andrea’s angst with Thad resonated with me but I’m not going to go there because that’s in the past. Let’s just say I get what she meant about that, and how awful it feels when there’s a Naomi. I remember feeling all ranty whenever Andrea was alone with Thad and how I wanted to shoo him away. (But other than that, I still think I am more of a Julie, haha)And speaking of Damon! I liked Damon a lot. There’s so much about him that’s easy to like, in an alpha-male kind of way. Like how he was focused, and how he didn’t resort to manipulation and instead just proved himself to show that he deserved to get what he wanted. I liked how he seemed so dangerous and in some ways, wild, but also can be pretty gentle at times. I would probably be intimidated like hell if I meet someone like Damon in person, but I think I will still be secretly watching him. :P (Haha, see, I’m a Julie.) I liked him so much that I told Mina that it seemed like there’s competition for Lucas of Fairy Tale Fail’s spot in my heart. Gasp!I really liked What You Wanted. While most of the story revolved around the “extended” hook-up, there’s a lot more in their story that gives reader a chance to see how characters like Andrea and Damon change, find out, and eventually, get what they really wanted. :)Also – lots of food in this book, so yeah, don’t read this with an empty stomach. Sushi, grilled fish, juice, and siopao. :D

By Erani Kole *I received an ARC from InstaFreebie in exchange for an honest review*First off, I loved that it was set in the Philippines because it's on my bucket list, so seeing Andrea and Damon go to different islands like it was a roadtrip made it all the more thrilling.ANDREA IS AWESOME. She's quite crass with her 'relationships' and what she thinks makes her happy (or rather, keeps her safe) so it was great to see her find someone as sweet as Damon, despite having his own reputation. DAMON, with his reputation, never flaunted it beyond words the entire time I read this. If anything, he was the perfect gentleman- the perfect guy who could be sweet while still playing all the right parts of a bad boy. Like, idk... because Andrea was such a whirlwind, he was the perfect rock she needed. Not once did I ever read a bad thing about him. Well, there was one, but (I'm pretty sure) he gave up on it after he met Andrea. From then on, it was all just about Andrea realizing what they had. *fangirl screams*This story flowed very nicely, sucking me right into Andrea's mind as she lived through the drama and struggles of doing the right thing for herself. It was just done so well. When I first read it, it was a small hook, with plot twists unfolding with every chapter until I was addicted and needed to know everything. Her thing with her friend Thad annoyed me once I found out what a weirdo he was, but I was glad that Damon was there to yell at her the things my kindle wouldn't understand when I tried it. Sad life.Andrea is a very interesting and strong character with a surprising side to her as you read. Damon, with his bad reputation and all, was just as surprisingly... GOOD. Like he could never fail or disappoint me, and I think how I felt was how Andrea felt, and I believe the author purposefully did that. Sneaky thing, if she did. Unless I'm just reading too much into it. *shrugs*There was serious drama and squeal-worthy moments, but I got frustrated towards the end when Andrea chose to be stubborn about the truth. I can't blame her, however, because she was just playing safe. I'm glad with the ending and how it came to be, because it was seriously cute with the kind of flow that they'd always wanted. The dialogue was great, as were their partnered diabolical plans. I LOVED LOVED LOVED how they came together because it gave cause for the universe to have their own hangouts slink out to play. Seriously devoured it all and I don't know why, it was just perfect for me.I definitely recommend this to those who love a fun plot within a plot within a plot of romance and humor. Andrea's a guarded little thing with the exterior of a 'who-cares' hurricane, and Damon is the perfect island to keep her grounded. He keeps her from floating through life, actually gives her a real thing to fall for. It was just all so cute. *cries*

The Inventor's Secret: What Thomas Edison Told Henry Ford, by Suzanne Slade

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Emphasizing the power of perseverance, this cheery picture book alternates between the lives of two inventors, beginning with Thomas Edison, who was 16 years Henry Ford's senior. Many of Edison's major inventions are touched on, and young Ford is portrayed as curious as to the secret of Edison's success. Ford continues to work on developing engines and designing cars and finally seizes the opportunity to meet Edison in person. The two go over Ford's designs, and Edison urges the younger man to "keep at it!" With that, Ford discovers that "he'd known Thomas's secret all along!"—a realization illustrated with a light bulb over Ford's head. The rest of the story focuses on Ford's work on creating a car for all Americans, which resulted in the Model-T. Fanciful watercolor sketches depict Edison and Ford dreaming, inventing, and working, with a variety of expressions on their faces. The drawings are framed on the page, providing an old-fashioned feel. Inset images provide details and information on their inventions. The front and endpapers are filled with sketches of various light bulbs and gears in muted brown tones. The early lives and activities of these men are covered briefly. The factual text emphasizes how both started as dreamers who took action. Back matter includes a section on Edison and Ford's friendship, more material about the inventions, author and illustrator notes, and extensive source notes with citations for dialogue and other facts. VERDICT A suitable addition for those seeking biographies of inventors.—Tamara Saarinen, Pierce County Library, WA

Review What would a renowned, established inventor have to say to a hopeful young tinkerer?Slade precedes her description of a historical meeting with interwoven accounts: one of Thomas, a disaster-prone experimenter who parlays an early interest in gadgets and electricity into a pen that produces multiple copies, a phonograph, and hundreds of other popular innovations; the other of Henry, born 16 years later, whose yen to produce a practical, inexpensive motor car encounters obstacle after frustrating obstacle. At last, hoping for insight into Edison's success, Henry buttonholes the great inventor at an 1896 dinner. The two instantly fall into a technical discussion, climaxed by the excited Edison's "Keep at it!" . . . the author and illustrator close with fuller notes on major Edison-ian inventions, the development of the Model T, and particularly the lifelong friendship that the encounter kindled between these two giants of industrial technology. . . .-Kirkus Reviews"What's his secret?" That's the question dogging Henry Ford as he watches Thomas Edison's phonograph and incandescent bulb take off, while his own attempts to create steam and gas engines sputter. Slade shifts between the developing careers of both men until, while discussing engines with Edison at a dinner in 1896, Ford gets his answer: "Keep at it!" Edison shouts encouragingly. Reinhardt's mixed-media artwork includes several lighthearted moments (parallel scenes featuring Edison and Ford as children highlight the explosive results of early failed experiments). Extensive endnotes discuss Slade's and Reinhardt's processes and several of the inventions mentioned, along with a time line and source notes. It's a rewarding look at the importance of persistence, as well as the friendship that developed between these prominent inventors. -Publishers WeeklyEmphasizing the power of perseverance, this cheery picture book alternates between the lives of two inventors, beginning with Thomas Edison, who was 16 years Henry Ford’s senior. VERDICT A suitable addition for those seeking biographies of inventors.-School Library JournalThis dual picture-book biography of how Thomas Edison inspired Henry Ford succeeds in showing the emotional side of the life of an inventor: success requires more than just one or two—or even two dozen—attempts. Reinhardt’s soft, amiable watercolor, ink, and colored-pencil artwork provides a lot of visual detail about both Edison’s and Ford’s passions, while Slade’s text explains each man’s inspiration and the way his inventions fundamentally changed the world. Ample source notes and a comprehensive dual time line help explain some of Slade and Reinhardt’s depictions of Ford and Edison, and photo-illustrated notes about each inventor’s most memorable creations provide substantial information to get kids started on research projects. While there are abundant compilations for kids about inventions and inventors, Slade and Reinhardt keep the focus solidly on the human element of frustration, persistence, and the power of a mentor. It’s an unusual angle and well executed, which makes it a good fit for STEM-oriented programs as well as storytimes about the benefit of good friendships.-Booklist

The author reveals how Edison and Ford both spent a lot of time "trying out" various models of their inventions. This is an important lesson for our students to learn--change/improvement/innovation takes time. AND another lesson implied in the book is that inventors sometimes need encouragement from each other. In the book, Ford, looking for advice from Edison, finally gets a chance to talk to him about his plans for a motor car and Edison exclaims, "Keep at it!" That's his advice--and so Ford does. This could be read aloud in 2nd-4th grades as a way to launch a science or integrated ELA/Science unit of study focused on inventions or on the daily practices of scientists/inventors. Prompts for writing in response might be, "What is one of the main ideas in this book?" and "Why is this main idea important to people today?"BTW - It's a long picture book. Worthy of reading aloud more than once and then placing in the classroom library for independent or shared reading.Suzanne Slade is a "go to" author for nonfiction to include in your classroom library and to read aloud to students.

By Susan Roberts This delightful story starts when Thomas and Henry were curious boys who spent most of their time running experiments—and getting into trouble! This book is filled with history nuggets and an afterward sharing Thomas and Henry’s special friendship, how the author came to write the book, and the challenges the illustrator had to accurately illustrate the book. It also includes snippets of information on several inventions of both Thomas and Henry. A great introduction to two twentieth century men who changed the world. It was awarded the NSTA 2016 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12.Susan Roberts, Book ReviewerBooks4theCuriousChild.com

THE INVENTOR’S SECRET: WHAT THOMAS EDISON TOLD HENRY FORD is a book about curious and imaginative creators I would have cherished. The opening immediately draws one in with wonderful language and the enticing lure of a secret. Author Suzanne Slade begins the story focusing on the younger years of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford (16 years younger than Edison). The reader observes the thoughts and experiences of Thomas and Henry through Jennifer Black Reinhardt’s rich and detailed watercolor and ink illustrations. As Henry grows up and keeps hearing about Thomas’ inventions, he is beyond curious and wants to know how they work. I love how Slade crafts their first time meeting in person over several pages. This meeting where the secret is shared changes both of their lives forever and a 30-year friendship forms. Beyond the skillful story and inspired illustrations, all of the information shared at the end of the book is a phenomenal bonus. From the joint timelines of each man’s life and an explanation of their friendship to details about their inventions and informative source notes, this book is a wonderful addition to any personal collection (it is now in mine) as well as being a great gift (I got one for my sister’s third grade classroom too).It has been awarded the National Science Teachers Association’s 2016 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12.

I fell in love with Liam only to be left shattered into a million pieces. Again. The idea of being without him cripples me but the reality is, he's gone.

He doesn't understand, and I can't make him.

If only he'd see the conviction behind my words - then Liam would still be here.

By mjlovestoread *this review contains a big spoiler...don't read if you haven't already read Consolation...just know this one is ah-mazing!*The anticipation for this book was overwhelming for me. I fell in love with Natalie's story in Consolation and craved the conclusion I know I would find in Conviction. To say I was overwhelmed by the beauty of this book is an understatement. Corinne Michaels has once again proven she is an incredible writer who delivers exactly what the readers desire. The author is so well versed in the military life that her ability to convey the absolute joy and horror Natalie faced at finding her presumed-dead husband, Aaron, alive felt completely viable. This could definitely happen in real life and I found myself completely consumed with how Natalie could possibly be able to reconcile her life now that she had fallen in love with Aaron's best friend Liam Dempsey. This book covers the agonizing journey she must now take in trying to come to the right decision that is both right for her heart and for her daughter. But it never felt overdone or redundant or superficial. It is a powerful story of one woman's fight to get the happy ending she both craves and deserves. What I loved the most was Natalie's drive. Never does she back down or run away like so many other heroines I've read before in her situation. This woman knows what she wants and is not afraid to make it happen. Not wanting to hurt either Aaron or Liam, we are witness to the compassion and sensibility Natalie encompasses in order to realize the dreams she so desperately doesn't want to give up. Watching her juggle a myriad of conflicting emotions, wanting to do right by everyone involved and not losing herself or her beloved daughter, Aara, in the process was quite the feat. To the Author's credit, this rollercoaster of heartbreak was handled with true grace. I loved the way the story progressed and the heroine's ability to handle such conflict when she didn't know at times where to turn. The secondary characters are the perfect compliment to this book. The love each of the guys have for Natalie, Liam and Aaron, warmed my heart. The loyalty that is on constant display was a joy to read. Reanell is the friend we all wish we had to lean on. And Mark stands out for me as the big brother we all want by our side when times get tough.I would be remiss if I didn't at least express my feelings about Liam. There aren't enough words for this man. This selfless, caring, compassion and sexy man who would move mountains and step aside if it would make Natalie happy. How he loves Aara as his own, how conflicted he is yet prays he'll get the life he never knew he wanted but is now desperate for. I will only say that my passion for him grew by leaps and bounds in this book and he is definitely a book boyfriend I won't soon forget. The author's writing has been taken to a higher level with this series. Her capacity to convey tender moments, passionate nights, all-consuming heartbreak and even lighthearted exchanges all in one story is not an easy task. But she wrote a beautiful tale that at times took my breath away. I didn't want it to end simply because I was enjoying it that much, despite all the pain.I will only say this: I strongly suggest you read Consolation first, then dive right into Conviction. This is a series that happily grabbed onto my heart and didn't let go until that very last page was read. And even now, I'm not quite sure I'm over this story. A reread is definitely in order! You will devour it just like I did. Don't say I didn't warn you because yeah, it's that good.An ARC was graciously provided by the author.

By Alison Maxwell Spoiler free review!I don't think in all of my years as a reader have I ever NEEDED a second book to be released as much as I needed Conviction. Consolation's ending stayed with me for weeks. I often found myself thinking "how will Corinne Michaels ever resolve the feelings and emotions I was left with when those final words were spoken in Consolation?"Well...let me tell you. I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this book and it did not disappoint.I always knew Natalie was a strong heroine. The way she survived the devastating reality of being a seal wife in Consolation with grace. The way she pulled herself back from the brink because she had to for her daughter and the way she loved Liam was nothing short of spectacular.I had no way of knowing how this book would play out and the fact that I still kept coming back to Consolation and worrying and wondering spoke volumes for this spectacular author and the characters I had grown to love. This was an amazing conclusion to Natalie's story. Corinne Michaels did it again!I will forever love Liam!!!

After a year of mourning him, burying him, and finding out he cheated on her, she now must face the fact that he is alive. Her dreams of starting a new life with Liam are shattered as she watches Liam's reaction and lack of eye contact. This now is the journey of Natalie, Liam and Aaron as they must find out what love, loyalty and commitment really means. For Aaron, coming back from a year of being tortured and hoping he can someday come back to Natalie, it is a rude awakening. He not only must face the fact that his hopes are shredded, but that his past mistakes have consequences.Corinne Michaels has given us here a sober, unflinching conclusion to these characters' hopes and dreams. She intimately describes the struggle our military wives go through with each deployment. Their sacrifice is more than risking a loved one's life. It is their daily struggle to survive the unknown... will he be safe; will he make it back; will he come back changed from what he has had to face? The strength of our fighting men depends on the conviction their partners have in keeping a stable home for them to come back to. The support and undying love of these families becomes the core that keeps them stable to perform their jobs.
