Wild Magic (The Immortals), by Tamora Pierce

From Publishers Weekly In this first volume of a series, Pierce returns to the world and characters she introduced in her Song of the Lioness fantasy epic. Here, she tells the story of Daine, a 13-year-old orphaned girl with an extraordinary talent for communicating with animals. The teenager is swept up in the first skirmishes of a war, and is forced to master her fears and learn how to marshall her magical abilities. Trying to make the sequel to four previous novels stand on its own is no mean feat, and Pierce has a lot of exposition to relate. By telling the story through Daine's eyes, she allows new readers a chance to "catch up" on who's who along with her heroine. Although this device proves effective for the most part, some of the scenes are a little bewildering. However, Pierce's inventive descriptions of Daine's apprenticeship as a Mage, her riveting battles with griffins, dragons and other monsters, and her delightful, egalitarian ideals more than compensate for this minor flaw. Ages 10-up. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 5-7–In the first volume of the Immortals quartet by Tamora Pierce (Atheneum, 1992), Daine, a 13-year-old girl from the mountains, meets Onua, the Queen's Horse Mistress, and together they work to bring ponies in for the Queen's Riders. Along the way, they discover that Daine's talent with animals is something more–it's wild magic. Under the tutelage of the mage Numair, Daine begins to learn how to control her magic and deepens her friendships with two-leggers. She also discovers that there are wrong animals she can sense, ones that have somehow escaped the Divine Realms and are now roaming and raiding once more–Immortals. Daine is a likeable character, and her past and reasons for fleeing mountains are intriguing. Those around her, including Alanna from Pierce's Song of the Lioness quartet (Atheneum), are well-developed characters, making for an exciting adventure infused with magic. Set in the fantastical kingdom of Tortall, this full-cast performance of the book is a joy to listen to. The main narration is done by the author, with all the characters voiced by different actors. Unobtrusive music throughout enhances the recording. An excellent choice where Tamora Pierce books circulate well, and where there are fantasy fans who enjoy intricate world building.–Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From the Publisher "Daine is a super new heroine who makes this action-packed fantasy a joy to read."-- Voice of Youth Advocates

"Those readers who enjoy a swashbuckling imaginative adventure will enjoy this story, which is filled with all types of magic."-- School Library Journal

No mere words can express my heartfelt praise: funny, thoughtful, top-of-the-line, number one, At . . . how about it's just, plain wonderful? Daine, a girl blessed with the unique ability to speak with animals, is hired by Onua, the woman that manages the Rider's ponies. The story weaves together danger, adventure, humor, and love in perfect unison. It also touches on the subject of finding your true self, which I thought was brilliant. I have read Wild Magic, cover to cover more times than I can possibly count. It's perfectly suited to all ages groups. Fifth graders read it and think it's cool the way a girl can talk to animals, whereas high school students may read it and relate to the loyalty, bravery, and compassion of all the characters. If you're going to read one book in your entire life, make this one it. It's a journey unlike any other you have ever encountered. My copy is ragged and torn, but I look upon it like an old friend. I am an extremely avid reader, and out of all the books i've read, i have yet to see one come even close to ranking with Wild Magic. READ THIS BOOK!

The storyline catches you from the beginning, and the characters are intriguing. Daine's secret is built well, and the different ways she interacts with humans and animals is well done. Readers of the Alanna books will be glad to know that the lady knight will be appearing in this series, though not as a main character. Other great new characters are Numair Salmalin, the mage, and Buri, the Queen's Rider.Pierce's books are aimed at a strange demographic, since her main characters are usually girls and start a series around 10 years, but finish it around 18 years of age. Still, I read the Alanna books for the first time when I was about eight, and I've reread them several times (I'm 25 now). Same with The Immortals. There are often things I overlooked the first time I read it, and as I got older, other things stood out to me.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. the defining work of fantasy literature By Jennifer Even now, at age 13, riffling through the well worn pages of my beloved Immortals series, I wonder how it is humanly possible to write books so amazing. I've always loved fantasy, and Tamora Pierce is my favorite author, and always has been. This entire series is a must read for any fantasy nut. It's just like a good smoothie - the perfect blend of everything. Humor, adventure, a touch of romance and a whole lot of enchantment, I consider the Wild magic story one of Ms.Pierce's finest. The young girl Daine, who has the wonderful gift of animal speech, and even shape shifting, starts out as a sad orphan who's lost her family. It was wonderfull to "watch" her slowly heal, and discover herself shinig through her past. But I really felt myself connect with all the characters, and I consider that one of the most important things about novels. I recommend this book for anyone who likes a good fantasy.

Despite warnings of annoying mosquitos and beastly spiders, Becca Glover couldn’t be more excited about her expedition to Costa Rica. Rooming with Matt Ritter, however, is an inconvenience she doesn’t see coming. He wields a machete, shaves with a knife and needs to wear a decent amount of clothes to cover the muscles she can’t stop staring at. Hired to lead a group of scientists through the jungle, Matt is convinced the fiery redhead is intent on making his job harder than it needs to be. Rebecca doesn’t listen and seems to invite danger at every turn. Her attitude is as much of a distraction as her curves and emerald green eyes. Now if he could only pay as much attention to his job as he does to her, their one-month adventure would fly by without a hitch. Hot temperatures, wild animals and a shared tree house are just the beginning of Becca and Matt’s obstacles. The real challenge lies in surviving each other.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The heroine was more annoying than the mosquitos. By Stacey is Sassy (Stacey B-Reviews) I started Wild Games looking forward to a quick and sexy read set in the jungle. I sort of got what I was asking for. The hero of the story is Matt, a security officer, who takes on security work protecting research students studying plants in Costa Rica. He’s handsome, tough and handles a machete well. Becca is on her first expedition and really looking forward to the opportunity to take her studies to the next level. When the two meet…it is definitely not love at first sight. This is a novella, so a lot needs to be covered in a short story. Contents wise, the author did OK. I wouldn’t have minded getting a bit more info on why and how a security guard is taking people into the jungle. Ex military? Lived in a jungle when he was a kid? All we know is that he’s done it a few times and can handle a knife well. Here’s my problem…considering this is a novella, we don’t have a lot of time to get to like the characters. Now Matt, I had no problems liking, he was protective and sexy. But Becca, holy shamoly, she was bloody annoying. She was rude, condescending and ungrateful. Even towards the end she couldn’t understand the fact that her words and actions were mean and uncalled for. I could NOT see what he saw in her. She went into the jungle not at all prepared for the animals and wildlife she would come in contact with. To walk away from the group, because she’s inquisitive, is just plain stupid.I think this author has huge potential. I liked the storyline and the hero Matt, but considering it’s a short story there isn’t enough time for us to…come to love…try and understand…See where Becca was coming from. Unfortunately, this made their romance a tad unbelievable for me. Give me more characters like Matt and less characters like Becca and I will definitely be reading more from this author.I received a complimentary copy of this story from the author for an honest review.

By Amazon Customer The jungles of Costa Rica are a pretty wild place; add to that a swashbuckling security guard/baby-sitter (to a group of grown-up scientists) plus a stubborn researcher there to study native plants, and you’ve got a unique setting for a story.Matt works at the local university and is a security officer there – but takes jobs with the university guiding scientists into the Costa Rican jungle to a research facility where they cohabitate (well, two to a treehouse) for a month while doing their work. He wields a machete as they make their way through the foliage and assists the travelers should they need it.And Becca, well she needed it. Her luggage was lost and she was ill-equipped for the hike in as a result. She’s stuck in shorts – while great for the hot weather, they are terrible at protecting her legs from the local fauna and she brushes up to a plant that causes her leg to swell up and makes her journey deeper into the jungle a painful and slow endeavor. And with this incident, Matt does what he does best. He has Becca hop up onto his back to piggyback her in to the site. You’d think Becca would be grateful but Matt is the type of guy who sits squarely outside her comfort zone. He’s got a scruffy face and she likes clean-shaven men. He’s muscular and handsome and pretty intimidating to this beautiful redhead - so she may have said a thing or two that did not endear herself to Matt (in other words, she whined). Matt tries to be professional but she’s getting on his nerves. Once they roll into the work-site, they are told they will be sharing a treehouse…“You must be joking,” she said. Jonathan’s face was serious. “I am not.” Matt rubbed his neck. ****. “This is obviously a mistake,” she said. “Everyone is paired up with a member of the same *** [gender]. Mr. Ritter is not a woman.” “Glad you noticed,” Matt mumbled under his breath and a few people snickered. In no time, Rebecca [Becca] shot up and hopped over to Jonathan as if she hadn’t been the biggest handicapped pain in the *** through half the jungle. “You can’t possibly expect me to share a hut with him,” she whispered quietly while looking at Matt over her shoulder. “Why not?” Jonathan replied. She turned to frown at him. “Because, it’s inappropriate. I should be rooming with another female.” Matt had to agree with her for once. “We are not evenly numbered, Rebecca. I was going to ask for a couple of volunteers to have a male/female pair-up, but seeing how you are injured and require assistance, it’s only logical to pair you up with Matt,” Jonathan said. She stared outraged at Jonathan, then at Matt. “This is unacceptable. I will not share a hut with that. . .brute.” “Thanks, I’ll take that as a compliment,” Matt said dryly. She snorted and turned back to Jonathan. “You can’t be serious. Mr. Ritter and I cannot share a hut.” “It’s not a hut, sweetheart. It’s a treehouse,” Matt corrected her…But you know those kids on the playground who “like” someone would pull their hair or tease them to get their attention? Think of this pair like that. These two bickered – like a lot. His manly ways irritated Becca and her temper frustrated Matt. They were constantly harping on each other, and then they were not…“And you are the most, the most. . .,” she obviously tried to think of the worst insult, “non-threatening machete-wielding bodyguard I know.” He grinned, earning himself an even deeper frown. “That didn’t seem to be the case when I protected you from that spider. You screamed like a ******* opera singer when you saw me.” Her cheeks glowed like hot embers. “Anybody would scream if they were faced with a wet, naked man looking like he’s about to chop someone’s head off.” “I’d say I’m going a pretty damn good job then,” he concluded smugly. She grunted and was about to turn away, but he grabbed her arm and pulled her back. She hit his chest with large surprised emeralds staring back at him. “Where are you going?” he asked, letting his gaze run over her face. “To bed.” That sounded good to him, but he wasn’t going to suggest he join her. Not yet at least...Her gaze moved from his eyes to his mouth. He pulled her closer and crushed her lips with his. He expected resistance but there was none. Her lips were plump and soft and melted onto his just right. Her tongue did as much exploring as his, and her hands dug into him everywhere at once; his back, his neck, his hair, even his ***. Holy ****…These two were a conundrum throughout this book. I often wasn’t sure whether they actually liked one another or hated one another. They blew hot and cold right up until the end and it was different to see a couple being so at odds with each other for most of a story. And to be honest, I found myself having a very difficult time understanding or liking Becca. I don’t understand why a girlie-girl would agree to much less want to trek into an actual jungle to research plants and if she did, why she wouldn’t be very happy and grateful for the guidance of an experienced guide to be at her side?I liked Matt overall though; there were times he acted like a guy, but then, he is one. He was completely as perplexed with the actions and voiced-out-loud thoughts Becca threw his way and whenever he would try to smooth things over with her, she would just wind him back up again.Although there was definitely sexual tension between these two, there were times when they acted like sibling rivals as well. The setting for this story was very intriguing. I enjoyed reading how this author painted the scenery with her words and could feel the humidity around me and hear the animals of the jungle in my mind (as I read it). It is a fairly short novella (113 pages) so it’s a fun, quick read.If you feel like a quick, trip into the wilds of a jungle with a hunky guide who’s prepared for anything, this would be a good story to consider adding to your TBR.

Good Book By Char Reviewed by Char for Late Night Books and ReviewsThis contemporary romance was set mainly in the jungles of Costa Rico with main characters Becca and Matt. Rebecca Glover, a college-employed scientist, is ready to set forth on her first adventure and first real field experience to study plants and trees in the wild. Matt Ritter was hired by the college to accompany the scientists and provide protection for their group while they are in the research facility.Immediately upon landing Becca’s adventure turns somewhat sour. The airline loses her luggage and she is forced to hike for two hours through the jungle without the proper long pants and boots. Shortly after her journey begins, she brushed against a poisonous plant that causes her ankle to painfully swell and walking to be almost impossible.Matt is asked by the group leader to assist Becca, who is stubborn and doesn’t appreciate the help. She was the cause of numerous bickering sessions. This could be caused by her having a bad day from the lost luggage and then getting injured. The bickering continued throughout their trek but got worse when Becca and Matt were told that they have to share a cabin for the whole trip. This is a great story-line. I just love that it is set in a jungle, with a sexy capable protector and a slightly up-tight scientist who bicker but are secretly attracted to each other. These two bicker constantly, but it seems like Becca is the cause of most of it, sometime unnecessarily. Matt was a little reserved and sullen in the beginning of the book, although, I’m not sure why that is. Maybe Becca was picking up on the vibes. When they were not bickering, they have some good chemistry going between them. I would have liked more scenes when they were getting along and some more information about the characters. The romance was there but could have been expanded. This was a short book, more a novella than novel, which made the story feel a little rushed, but I did enjoy it. The writing was good and I really liked the dialogue, which is important in a good book. I am interested in reading another book from this author.Four stars * * * *

EVIE I’ve had a crush on him for like forever. Now he’s flirting with me(!), and while I know he’s a notorious playboy who’s got no shortage of beautiful women throwing themselves at him, I can’t help but want him. If anyone’s going to break my heart I’d much rather it be him than anybody else … LORENZO She’s nineteen, beautiful, and incredibly talented. Shy and sweet, she’s unlike any of the many casual flings I’ve had in the past. She’s also got a penchant for dressing in a way that seems designed to drive me mad with desire … When a casual conversation reveals things about our respective pasts that make her off-limits to me, I know that I’ve got to rein in my obsession with claiming her for my own. Except I can’t. *** Mastered by the Maestro is a steamy, sexy standalone romance novella (~36,000 words) featuring a dominant, alpha older man and an inexperienced but not-so-innocent younger woman. HEA ending, no cliffhangers.

Lorenzo Moretti is a world famous conductor , very well known for being such a perfectionist and he is such a ladies’ man. His every pore oozes alpha male and the ladies flock to him—yet he is lives for his work and only has time for one night stands or very short affairs. Yet when he meets Evie, the woman who is sent to him to take some classes because she is considered to be something terrific on the piano, well, Renzo KNOWS he must have her.Evie is 19, a virgin and in Italy for training with the “Maestro” Lorenzo Moretti. Her piano professor got her in to work with him and told her he is the Best and that he can help her harness her talent. Evie has had a crush on Renzo for a while and this is her dream come true. Now that she is in Italy, we get to see how everything is in her eyes. We see at first how Renzo finds her unattractive until an incident puts her in a new light and he suddenly finds her attractive and resplendent. Now the chase is on between Renzo and Evie.Renzo and Evie started a relationship that is filled with some elements of BDSM. It is totally hot and earthy but once Renzo finds out something about Evie’s past, about her family, he pulls back and she is left hanging. Will he realize the truth in time or will he lose something very precious and his chance at being happy?Evie is very sweet and full of life and is open to trying anything new while Renzo is cynical and hard. He is very masculine and alpha. I love the difference in personalities for that is what brings them together and what makes this a super hot story. I highly recommend this story and you will love the ending . I will definitely read this author again. My rating: 4.6 stats *******A gifted copy was provided by the author for my honest review***

By HockeyMakeup This book came to me by the author, Dita Selby, for an honest review. Before we get started with that, we all like visuals of our alpha males in these tales and my mind almost immediately created the alpha of this book, Lorenzo Moretti to David Gandy. I read this book in ONE day, couldn't put it down. Sexy, hot, fun, confident characters, hot sex, passion, and control. So hot!Maestro Lorenzo Moretti is a world famous conductor currently enjoying the off season in Italy. Lorenzo is in his early forties and quite the known ladies man. He has a parade of women he hits up whenever he's in certain parts of the world but never settled down. He tried settling down in his twenties with a woman named Victoria. Their marriage was over faster than it happened because once they told Victoria parents, her father made her choose between her trust fund or Lorenzo. Since then relationships are something that do not interest him, with his busy schedule, it's near impossible as well. Lorenzo hasn't forgotten about Victoria and often wonders what happened to her. He knows she married someone much older after she got pregnant but that's all he know.Maurizio Alfieri, Lorenzo's old teacher, contacted him about teaching a promising student, Eva Courtenay, this summer. He can't quite understand why Eva needs his instruction since she's off to the conservatory after the summer and has been studying in Milan with Alfieri. He senses an ulterior motive may be in place but again, remembering all that Alfieri did for him, he's willing to take Eva under his wing. When Eva and Lorenzo first meet there's an immediate electricity, something he has never felt before with another woman. Eva can't quite believe the energy between them either, especially seeing as she's been a fan girl of Lorenzo's since as far back as she can remember. Whenever she would bring up Lorenzo to her grandparents, her grandfather would either change the subject or make a comment. Eva was shipped off to boarding school while her mother lived with her new husband, which broke the heart of her father. Her mother and stepfather died in a car accident and her father drank himself to death so she ended up living grandparents. After a very sensual music lesson, Lorenzo asks Evie to dinner later that night. She agrees and goes back to her apartment to get ready only to find out that she had been lied to by the person subletting it. The landlord comes by to fix the apartment for his new tenant and offers Evie some help if she provides him with some pleasure first. Not knowing who else to call, Evie calls Lorenzo, he immediately comes by and rescues Evie, stating that she'll live at his place for the remaining summer.Once Evie has packed an overnight back and her attire for dinner, they head back to Lorenzo's to get ready. Evie comes down in a very tight sexy black dress and they head off to dinner. The sexual tension between them in palpable during dinner and Evie soon finds Lorenzo's foot caressing her foot and leg under the table. While flirting and playing footsie during dinner, Lorenzo asks Evie about her family and herself. There's not much to tell but she offers up the past about her mother being non-existent for most of her life, her father being heartbroken, and living at boarding school with the occasional holiday trips to her grandparents.Evie mentions how her grandparents lived in Milan, fairly close to the conservatory and how her grandfather was in the Foreign Affairs. Lorenzo immediately stops caressing his foot on Evie as his mind catches up ... He knew someone who's father was in the Foreign Affairs, that lived in Milan, her name was Victoria, the woman who he fell in love with but was forced to annual their marriage when her parents found out.Lorenzo asks what her grandparents last name's are and when she says 'Smythson' he feels all the blood drain from his face. Lorenzo states, more than asks, “They had a daughter named Victoria, didn’t they?” to which Evie replies, “she’s my mother."Will Lorenzo and Evie be able to have a future after he finds out she's the daughter of his once, yet brief, wife Victoria? This book was very enjoyable to read! Dita is very good with her character development and keeps the story line flowing. I was pleased to find out the story develops all the way through and doesn't just abruptly end like most shorter books tend to do. I immediately fell in love with Lorenzo! He's so sexy and confident, he could run his piano playing fingers all over my body any day! Evie's character I thought was beautiful portrayed, she's a young, innocent, curious girl but she's not dumb. She's been forced to live alone most of her life and while she is seeking the love of someone, she's not just throwing herself at the first man who shows her attention. I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to be in Evie's shoes and be on the receiving end of playing out a sexual fantasy with their favorite actor, musician, or in her case, conductor. I liked the mention of other supporting characters in the book but since this is a short story I was glad that they were just background and not focused on too much. They were they to help fill out the story but weren't interrupting the tale of Lorenzo and Evie. This book would be great to read if you're in between series or need a fun break from something you're already reading. I would love to hear more of Lorenzo and Evie's story ... so Dita, if you're listening, a second book would be welcome!

The story line was unique, the young musician is sent to learn from the Maestro and they both fall for each other; but there is a monkey wrench of sorts that is thrown in the story. You will need to read it to find this out."What's more her eyes are dreamy longing almost, her voice soft and low, her lips still temptingly parted as she looks at me. ..she wants me? I'm a bit more than twice her age, old enough to be her father.""-here I am, a nineteen year-old virgin with absolutely no real-life experience with men, and in less that an hour after I've met this guy, all I can think of is how much I want to service him, how much I want to be his dirty little slut to play with, how much I want him to use me for his pleasure...""If anyone's going to break my heart I'd rather it be him than anybody else...""I don't know if I'm just a very bad man for wanting her so much, or if I'm a fool for not wanting to be a bad man when I have this glorious creature practically imploring me to take her. It's what I have dreamed of from the very beginning, wasn't it?"This book was very well written, was steamy and kept this reader eager to turn the pages. A great book by this talented author.

Great message horrible singing By A Customer Marshall Rosenberg has a lot of important information to offer about resolving differences peacefully and removing the attitudes within ourselves that give rise to violent disputes. I do think though, that this information is better spoken than sung (at least by Mr Rosenberg, who has a lovely speaking voice but a very distracting singing one!). No doubt the little ditties that he sings are intended as useful mnemonics for what he is saying on the tape, but I found them difficult to listen to. In my opinion, his book, Nonviolent Communication does a great job of introducing his way of thinking and the communication techniques that result from that. I find his suggestions quite useful in learning how to treat my children with more respect and in making them aware that we all have needs and that we must train ourselves to hear other people's needs, sometimes in spite of what they are saying. If you already have his book, skip this tape. If you have neither the book nor the tape, buy the book!

Awesome Simple Steps to Getting My Needs Met By Deborah Woolley I HAD to HAVE this CD from Marshall after I heard him speak in a workshop on "The Gift of Anger" last November. Learning that anger is a signal that the thoughts I am thinking at that time will positively insure that I will not get my needs met was a valuable lesson. This simple communication style helped me learn to ask to get my needs met and view others' strategies differently. Learning to speak "Giraffe" has brought more joy and laughter into my life than I could have ever imagined! I loved listening to Marshall's soft, melodic voice explain how the simple process of Nonviolent Communication works... and I even liked it when he sang, knowing that he was accompanying himself on a little yukalale and the song was coming straight from his heart. I am buying copies of this CD as gifts for my family. I am feeling happy and hopeful that this will meet all our needs for deeper closeness and connection!

Wong Here's just one of them:Many years ago I read "Don't Shoot the Dog!" with aneye towards training humans using rewards instead ofpunishment. Positive reinforcement sounded good, butsomething about it made me suspect it wouldn't work forpeople. "Speaking Peace" gave me the answer: Peopledon't like to be manipulated; rewards and punishmentsare both methods of manipulation, so people eventuallyrebel.

As a quick-tempered and hopelessly awkward teenager, Jack tries and most often fails to avoid fights with schoolyard bullies, suspensions, and late night neighborhood mischief in the small fishing town of Scuttleman’s Wharf. All along he remains unaware of the mounting danger closing in on him, until one day he encounters a frightening, otherworldly individual who takes the life of his last remaining loved one. This comes as a devastating blow that Jack cannot imagine ever coming back from. But when offered a chance at revenge by a mysterious stranger, he is forced to make a daring choice that will change the course of his life forever. Jack's decision ultimately leads him to the secret Island of Terroria, an impossible land filled with bizarre creatures and even more bizarre people...not least of all terrifying, coldblooded beasts that should only exist in one’s nightmares.

This might be the greatest fantasy adventure novel I have read in the last decade. I don't generally write reviews for books I read because I believe it best not to assert my own interpretation before the reader gets a chance to establish theirs, but because the author seems relatively unknown I hope it might do some good.As a seventh grade English teacher, I am constantly on the hunt for new authors that might be able to draw a young person's attention for longer than a couple of minutes. When I caught one of my students (who generally hates any kind of reading) with an ipad in class last week, I was surprised and pleased to see that he was actually reading! To those who do not deal with middle school age children on a regular basis, I cannot explain the magnitude of such a miracle. Naturally, I jotted down the name of the title.I wont cheapen the story by getting too deep into the plot, but Jourdan floats through your imagination with a Tolken-esque ease. I do not drop the mans name lightly. The reader does not have his or her hand held through the depths of the world created on the pages, but instead is given just enough description to create their own captivating creatures. The characters are complex and very real, and peeling down the layers of each individual is one of the most enjoyable parts of the experience. The imagery is completely original and easily interpreted, painting clear pictures of the surrounding scenery without weighing down the story with needless details. If you love to read, you will most likely finish this book in one setting. If you do not love to read, you just might be able to change your mind for a few hours while you fight for your life in Terroria.
