Eddie is five and a half, and thinks she is the only one in her family who isn’t really good at something.  So when she hears her little sister say “birthday—Mommy—fluffy—little—squishy,” it’s extra important for her to find this amazing present before anyone else does.  So, gregarious, charming, clever little Eddie goes all around the neighborhood to all her fabulous friends—the florist, the chic boutique owner, the antiques dealer, and even the intimidating butcher—to find one.  It’s a magical adventure that draws on Eddie’s special gifts, ones that she herself learns to appreciate.

Beatrice Alemagna was born in Italy in 1973. At the age of eight, she decided that whatever the cost she would become a "painter and writer of novels" when she grew up.

The Wonderful Fluffy Little SquishyFrom Enchanted Lion Books

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—After overhearing her sister say the words birthday, Mommy, fuzzy, little, and squishy, five-year-old Eddie traipses all over town alone, looking for the perfect present for her mother. She visits the baker, the florist, the clothing shop, the antique dealer, and the butcher. Everyone except the butcher gives her something that is neither fluffy/fuzzy nor squishy. The butcher tells her he's busy and frightens her away while waving a bloody knife. When she finally finds a "FLUFFY LITTLE SQUISHY," it looks like a cross between a pink poodle and a rodent. Eddie cuddles it as if it is alive and takes it home to Mom, who wears the best present ever…as a hat? The cartoon illustrations are done in colored pencil with watercolor backgrounds, and the style is reminiscent of Ludwig Bemelmans's art. The colors are muted except for Eddie's bright pink coat and the bright pink creature. VERDICT This French import is an interesting mix of realism and fantasy about one child finding her special talent. A general purchase for larger libraries.—Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA

Review “Young Edith—Eddie to her friends—goes looking for the perfect birthday present for her mother. Fortunately she has lots of friends . . . An irrepressible heroine in an effervescent book.” – Kirkus Reviews“There’s a lot to like here . . . Eddie leaps off the page in her neon pink jacket, and she brims with character.” – Seven Impossible Things

I love stories when children use their imagination to solve a problem or situation. When this cute little girl tells us about what her family can do she feels that she can't do anything, but this is about to change. It's mom's birthday and when she over hears her sister talking about , Birthday Fluffy, Squishy, this brave little goes on a hunt to find mom the prefect gift! The illustrations are AMAZING!!!!! I love Beatrice's wonderful illustrations and collage. She is masterful at it. I just had to add it to my already growing collection of her work! Brilliant work indeed. The kids will love it!

It didn't actually go where I thought, though! As she goes about the city, asking people if they have a Wonderful Fluffy Little Squishy, all the shop owners give her something which seems like the makings of a good gift. But, in the end, it's all used to catch the actual gift. The girl is a little messy, and so is the artwork, but in a way that feels quite appropriate. I think the artwork will keep a child's attention far more than the story or your actual reading voice!I'm still not impressed enough to advocate for immediate purchase, however. Give it a try from the library and decide on spending money after. Though if you find it in a used book pile, snatch it up!

By Stacy Renee Edith--better known as Eddie--hears her older sister mention their mother's birthday and something about a 'fuzzy, little squishy.' Knowing that her sister was going to give their mom the most amazing present, Eddie rushes into town in search of something wonderful to buy. She asks the baker, the florist, and even the grumpy butcher but after a whole day of searching she hasn't found the perfect thing. Just when she's about to give up, she hears a noise and sees the perfect wonderful little squishy thing.I absolutely loved the illustrations. While the story is entertaining, I was much more interested in the pictures with the collage of patterns and colors. There's plenty to look at on each page and all the details really drew me in. I especially liked the picture of the whole town with Eddie's pink jacket bobbing through the streets looking in windows and carrying on in her search.

The Devil's Playground (Faraway) (Volume 1), by Eliza Freed

About the Author Eliza Freed graduated from Rutgers University and returned to her hometown in rural South Jersey. Her mother encouraged her to take some time and find herself. After three months of searching, she began to bounce checks and her neighbors began to talk; her mother told her to find a job. She settled into Corporate America, learning systems and practices and the bureaucracy that slows them. Eliza quickly discovered her creativity and gift for storytelling as a corporate trainer and spent years perfecting her presentation skills and studying diversity. It was during that time she became an avid observer of the characters we meet and the heartaches we endure. Her years of study have taught her laughter is the key to survival, even when it's completely inappropriate. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This was actually a really good book maybe because this story was so close to ... By Tina Morgan First off let me say I am totally against cheating on your spouse while your married. With that being said I can go into my review. This was actually a really good book maybe because this story was so close to actually sounding like it really could happen. Meredith was a well educated lawyer that knew what she wanted. She had the perfect man(Brad)that she knew down to a t... he wanted her, money and power. Not always in that order. And as you read this book you will see she was usually at the bottom of the totem pole. He talked her into having children. She didn't want to give up her career just yet but he told her it would be fine. 9 years and 2 kids later....Meredith meets the colonel on a field trip with their elementary aged kids. They both felt a pull towards each other after that day. I have to give her credit she tried and tried to stay away from Vince and not give in. Her marriage with Brad was dissolving but she refused to break her marriage up. She never wanted to have to drop her kids of with their father every other holiday. Brad was away on business a lot. I actually didn't like him and wished she would've just divorced him. Lol But every time she turned around there Vince was with his dazzling smile. We find out later he was into her and had some stalker tendencies. Lol. He was also married. His wife was here and there throughout the book and she seemed sweet. He confesses to Meredith that he was so concentrated on schooling and being in the law enforcement that he just went along with marrying his wife. He didn't really wake up till Meredith. So basically this book is about 2 adults that aren't happy in their marriages. They end up having an affair. They have rules. Vince always wants honesty. Meredith has a few more rules. One rule which is the most important is if she ever emails him with no subject and no content he is to delete anything they have said to each other because it means her husband has caught on to something. They see each other for awhile and she breaks it off a couple times but she needs him like air. They fell in love. The end is a cliff hanger and I can't wait to read what happens next. Let's just say she sends an email to him with nothing...... And then there's an accident.....

Fantastic duet, loved it By DonnaC The Devil’s Playground &The Lion’s Den by Eliza Freed4 stars & 4.5 stars!!!!“This was nothing but a dangerous distraction. It was the devil’s playground.”These two books are a duet and ones that I read one after the other, only taking the mandatory toilet breaks and of course feeding the husband and kids, they were that addictive. Yes, this book does contain cheating which I know is a major turn off for some readers, however, the way that Meredith’s story is delivered is sympathetic, understandable and totally consuming.“I’ve stopped time and have you all to myself, and in the moments I’m quiet, I’m trying to figure out how to never start it again.”The Devils Playground is totally told in Meredith’s point of view and brings to the forefront just how lost she feels. Having been forced to move to the suburbs by her husband, to a house that she didn’t want and an area where she knew no-one she had never felt so isolated. Once a high flying attorney Meredith’s life is now monotonous, predictable and totally orbits around the lives of her two hilarious children. Meredith’s kids are the light of her majorly dim life and if it wasn’t for them she would have given up a long time ago.Meredith’s husband, Brad, still lives the single life. He “works” all the hour’s god sends and is never ever around. Leaving the house in the early hours and rarely home before 10pm. Always attending happy hours, company dinners and a plethora of parties, leaving Meredith and the kids behind. “Work” invades his weekends and he really is a stranger in the night. I had my suspicions about Brad from the very beginning, he tried to come across as perfect and being the bread winner for the family, but when someone is so perfect, more often than not they are not, they are always hiding something.“He’d wanted me so much back then, and I’d wanted him to have me. I just hadn’t realised how much he would take.”Vince, I ADORED this man, he was the Colonel, the head of police in this little community and everyone loved him. He was the one stable person of authority that everyone relied upon and he was selfless. He helped everybody, was a volunteer for all school and community functions and was a real pillar of the community. He had a wife and family too, but in the past two years he had really been at the point of his life where he was re-evaluating everything.“He was magnificent. A souvenir I hadn’t paid for, the vacation I didn’t earn. He was stolen goods, and I never wanted to return them, but I also knew I wouldn’t do the time to keep him. The cost was too high.”When Meredith and Vincent’s paths cross the attraction is undeniable, the chemistry is palpable and the kindle literally combusted. But Meredith is a woman of morals and was adamant that she would never have an affair. Eliza Freed really captured that push and pull of attraction, that back of forth of conscience over emotion and the true fight to do what is right and to try and make the right choices.“This won’t work if you’re in love with me. A mistake will be made.”“It isn’t a mistake.”“It’s worse. We’re a tragedy.”As much as I should have been rooting for these two to steer clear of each other there was no denying their attraction and it really was a foregone conclusion. This was not just an attraction of lust but they had an undeniable friendship, a soul mate connection that grew and grew the more and more they spent in each other’s company. It is this intense connection that managed to shift my moral compass firmly in their corner. I would never condone an affair, however, these two were perfect for each other and with such a crappy husband who showed her no affection, no attention and literally used her, it was no surprise that she strayed. However, it was not an easy choice and one that she battled with for a long time.“Brad didn’t realize I wasn’t some twenty-five-year-old he was effing. I was his wife, and I was already gone.”The Lion’s Den was fast paced and action packed and was told in three POV’s, Brad, Vince and Meredith. Eliza Freed really delivers an epic conclusion to this duet that will have you on the edge of your seat while delivering curve ball after curve ball.“Just follow your heart. It’ll lead you home.”“What if my heart lost its memory too?”Everyone’s story is told in this book and finally you get to see the behind scenes, warts and all which only added another dimension to the twisted that Eliza Freed has penned.“When a married man had an affair with a young girl, he was the only one having an affair. She was dating.”This duet was totally addictive, unputdownable and for me, an easy, quick read. Meredith’s kids really add the fun factor to this story and created many a laugh out loud moment as I sympathised with the endless, monotonous unanswerable questions that kids manage to pluck out of thin air and of course you cannot beat their unique fashion sense. Meredith was the epitome of a mama bear, her kids always came first and foremost and she would lay her life down for them, her life was her kids until someone showed her that she deserved a life too.“I was unhappy-horribly unhappy-and lonely. I let you fix what you never broke. I let you fill a spot you never vacated. I slipped into the darkness, because I’d follow you to hell if you asked me to.”This was a beautiful story that will have you heart swooning, while the suspense will have your stomach tied up in knots. It’s emotional in places but perfectly balanced with wit and humour that will also have you laughing out loud. For a cheating story, it worked, it wasn’t illicit, it was two people that found love when they weren’t looking. I cannot wait to read more from this author, my only complaint…I WANT AN EPILOGUE!!!!!“I’m Daniel, and my marriage is the lion’s den.”

By Samantha Pereira For those that believe there's never a reason to cheat, this novel blows that notion to bits with talented writing and a gripping story line. It is easy to understand how lines become blurred and how lonely hearts wander and seek out companionship and tenderness. Meredith and Vincent are easy to like and relate to even.Meredith was once a high-powered attorney until she was forced to become a stay-at-home mother. Her life consists of handling everyone's needs at the cost of burying her own. She doesn't have anyone to really talk with about her desires, needs, and wants since her husband is essentially just a monetary provider. He expects her to raise the children, manage the household, and give in to his physical needs without actually giving any support to Meredith besides money.Vincent is the chief of police for the small town where he and Meredith reside. He always knew he wanted to be on the force and never gave much thought to his love life so he married his high school girlfriend. His daughter is the same age as Meredith's. He never thought to stray from his dull marriage until meeting Meredith. The two meet due to the field trip both offered to chaperon for. They feel a zing of awareness which manifests inside them as lust. They are both seeking more out of their marriages to which they end up finding in each other. Vincent specifically gives Meredith the validation she seeks by asking about her day, her desires, and giving her what he can to satisfy her emotionally, mentally, and physically. He validates her existence with a job at the police office to get her out of the house and use her brain. He gives her his ear and satisfies her sexual desires. While I don't condone cheating, this novel really opened my eyes to understand. Granted, there's jackasses out there that just think they can do whatever they want and cheat but that isn't what happens in this novel. This story makes you really understand the reasons, how they tried to fight it, and how they ended up giving. The story completely hooked me and I look forward to reading the second book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. one expects a lot of hate and ranting but what one gets is the story ... By Juanita I have just finished the book Strange Women and other strangleholds by Nena Ndioma.I have a lot to say but I do not believe I have the way with words that would do justice to how I feel about the book. Nena Ndioma writes with a serenity that draws you in. In reading a personal memoir of this nature, one expects a lot of hate and ranting but what one gets is the story of a woman who understands the love of Christ and enjoys a peace that passes all understanding. She is obviously a Christian but this is not a "Christian" book. She writes from her heart and will get into your head. The book is simple yet not simplistic. It is a book, I, a happily married staunch Christian woman wish I had read when I was a much younger woman. If you are single, married, widowed, divorced especially if you are someone that has a relationship and you know it could be much more than you are enjoying currently, I would have you take a look at this book. It is the memoir of a woman who is so honest yet is not asking for your sympathy. She has walked her walk and invites you to share her journey that you may learn that even perfect people may not always have the perfect life but hopefully you will gain an understanding of your peculiar dynamics. This book does not endorse divorce and neither do I. It simply tells the story of a woman, who loved and survived the impact of her choices. I invite you to read.

Nena's story is one that so many African women (and non-Africans alike) can relate to. And whether married or single, separated or divorced, there is something in this book for every one, including the men!I admire her writing style, her courage, her honesty and her openness in this book.I have read this book a few times and will definitely read it again. I highly recommend it, its a book worth owning.Kudos Nena Ndioma!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nena's writing is beautiful, absorbing By Mbasekei Ayomobi Nena's writing is beautiful, absorbing, whimsical. And the subject, an insightful debunking of our folly as 'Christians' ...and as 'Africans'. Here's a winner! I'm truly sorry about what some women have had to go through. And really, it's not that there's a dearth of ministry to men...I've been involved in a lot of those, where the focus is on raising real and true men who are Christ-like...as husbands, fathers, leaders. I know many who are, too. The sad reality is just that not all men are mature in faith and character. I want to thank Nena Ndioma for the grace and courage she found to share her story. It's not just the story, but how she told it - guileless! It's remarkable, and it'll remain a healing/teaching tool for many others - married, unmarried, divorced, male or female.

Unfortunately, I have not read the previous book so I had a difficult time connecting with the characters. In this book, Joe Thorne is taking over a job that has always belonged to Martha Winter, preparing the Christmas dinner. Because this can be tricky, there were a few fumbles but the ending of the story is quite satisfying. It was well-written, as are all of Harriet Evans books. If the reader has read the previous book, A Place for Us, I believe they will enjoy this book also.I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I did not read the book that this was a spin-off from so was a little confused about where and how some of the family fit together but it was still a cute story. After reading other reveiwers comments it is a wrap up of the book "A Place For Us" so I would recommend that you read that first. I will go back and read it now as my interest in these characters is definitely peaked.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Two fuzzy creatures both want to sit in the same comfy chair. The trouble is, they can’t agree who it belongs to. They get madder and madder, until…

With expressive illustrations and simple text, this giggle-inducing tale about (not) sharing and (not) being a good friend features the endearing characters from Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winner You Are (Not) Small.

That's Not Mine, by Anna Kang

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—That's (Not) Mine teaches the value of sharing by demonstrating the opposite. A tall brown bear and a stubby blue bear—the very same pair from You Are (Not) Small (Amazon, 2014)—both want to sit in the same comfy yellow chair, but neither is willing to give it up. They argue about who it belongs to, constantly crying "It's mine!", and just like belligerent children they offer the kind of reasoning one would expect from such a statement. Quickly, their fairly "innocent" attempts to lay claim to the chair through trickery descend into physically removing one another. Their furrowed brows express the seriousness of the situation without detracting from the humorous approach of the overall look. With copious white space, the design is effective and cute. The story ends on a reassuring note, as the characters realize their folly and make up. Kang and Weyant's minimalistic art and dialogue force viewers to make their own inferences about events, especially in regards to why it is wrong to act in such a manner. VERDICT With its clever use of reverse psychology, That's (Not) Mine provides the perfect foundation for a discussion on sharing.—Rachel Forbes, Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Review

“With its clever use of reverse psychology, That’s (Not) Mine provides the perfect foundation for a discussion on sharing.” —School Library Journal

“Kang’s stripped-down dialogue and Weyant’s exuberant cartoons tap into the core of their characters’ emotions in a story that highlights the foolishness of fighting when there’s fun to be had.” —Publishers Weekly

“The creators of 2015 Geisel Medal winner You Are (Not) Small take on an even more fundamental concept…A simple, direct addition to the ‘sharing’ shelf.” —Kirkus Reviews

"This book is just so much of what you want your young child to read. It's silly, and simple, and wholesome, with characters who are real and flawed and lovable.” —Once Upon A Story

“Just as in their previous picture book, Weyant’s illustrations are delightfully fun, and Kang’s story presents a life lesson without being overly didactic.” —5 Minutes For Books

“If you have preschoolers at home I highly recommend you add this book to your reading list. Even toddlers and early elementary aged kids will get a kick out of it.” —Where Imagination Grows

“The story is simple but when you add the illustrations to the two fighting over a chair you get lots of giggles! We were able to use the book as a teaching moment and talk about how the two friends were not being very friendly.” —A Rup Life

“It presents the concept of sharing in an easy and accessible way without feeling preachy. And it’s fun whether you’re trying to impart a lesson or not.” —Cracking the Cover

In addition to writing, Anna loves to read, travel, laugh, eat, and nap.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Learn to share with That’s (Not) Mine By Jessica at Cracking the Cover Like its predecessor, “That’s (Not) Mine” features simple text and bright, animated illustrations. It presents the concept of sharing in an easy and accessible way without feeling preachy. And it’s fun whether you’re trying to impart a lesson or not.My one quibble with “That’s (Not) Mine” is the publisher’s suggested age range. While humorous, it’s a bit simple for 7-year-olds. Truthfully, I think even a 6-year-old might get bored. Also, if your little one is younger than 2 but has started adding picture books (as opposed to board books) into their repertoire, I’d say this would work for them. My daughter is 18 months and loves it. My suggested age range: 18 months to 5 years.
