Longlisted for the National Book Award The Newbery Honor–winning author of Hatchet and Dogsong shares surprising true stories about his relationship with animals, highlighting their compassion, intellect, intuition, and sense of adventure.Gary Paulsen is an adventurer who competed in two Iditarods, survived the Minnesota wilderness, and climbed the Bighorns. None of this would have been possible without his truest companion: his animals. Sled dogs rescued him in Alaska, a sickened poodle guarded his well-being, and a horse led him across a desert. Through his interactions with dogs, horses, birds, and more, Gary has been struck with the belief that animals know more than we may fathom. His understanding and admiration of animals is well known, and in This Side of Wild, which has taken a lifetime to write, he proves the ways in which they have taught him to be a better person.

This Side of Wild: Mutts, Mares, and Laughing Dinosaurs, by Gary Paulsen

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—A delightful compilation of insightful and entertaining tales of animal wisdom. In his first tale, Paulsen describes how, at age 67, he moved to Alaska, preparing to run the Iditarod again. Despite his wilderness prowess, the author says that he had once more become an "ignorant tourist" and needed someone to watch his back. In a characteristic moment of compassionate weakness, he acquired Corky, a sickly, eight-pound shelter poodle with rotten teeth. The "Corkinator" turned out to have "early-warning radar" and guarded him from predators large and small, using different barks to indicate what creature might be lurking and even looking in rear view mirrors for protection. Paulsen also includes an account of his experience with Gretchen, a dog he met in Texas while he was unhappily stationed in the army. Gretchen drank coffee at the kitchen table, knew a thousand words, and could communicate with head nods. Paulsen returned week after week to have actual soul-saving conversations with her, which gave him solace from his painful military life. In another story, birds and bees take over a rest stop in Arizona, successfully defending their territory against humans. Sketchy pen-and-ink illustrations add to the nostalgic atmosphere. Paulsen is the rare storyteller who offers wit, warmth, information, and sensitivity. However, though the book's gentle cover and the animal-related reminiscences will attract children, there are a few humorously off-color moments and some deeper, more philosophical musings that are more likely to resonate with a more mature audience. VERDICT Older middle graders and younger teens, especially those who love dogs, will come away with a variety of emotions about wildlife—curiosity, respect, and awe—after reading this funny and perceptive work.—Diane McCabe, John Muir Elementary, Santa Monica, CA

I plunged into it.~THIS SIDE OF WILD isn't a long book and I read it in a few hours. I think it's a combination of true life and exaggeration. But I could be wrong.I do know that it draws on Gary's diverse life experiences. It touches upon a time when he was in the army, as well as when he was a wee child. He recalls his experiences running the Iditarod and living in the desert. Tying all these episodes together are the animals he has loved and admired. And in fact this book is all about the magic of life and the magic dogs and horses and birds can bring to it.The stories are wonderful in the way that Paulsen's works always are. However I'm going to add some observations that are critical. First, there is a jumpy feeling to the book. In the midst of a story the author will look back in time. It adds depth of understanding where Gary is coming from, but the feel and flow is different from previous books.*The jumps in time actually have a virtuous side in that there are natural stops that can be used by anyone reading the tales aloud. The other thing I'll note, but which really isn't criticism, is that some sensitive younger children might find some of the discussions of death distressing. There is nothing graphic of course, but the book talks about the hundreds of thousands that died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as those who were killed by wild life and accidents. These things are not dwelled upon but I know that some kids don't need them to be emphasized to be distressed by them.WHAT I REALLY THINK::: THIS SIDE OF WILD is a wonderful collection of stories about the wonder of dogs, horses and birds. Gary talks about how its frequently animals that train us, not the other way around. How dogs and horses can show kindness and intellect if you only know to patiently look for it. And how an 8 pound poodle with only 3 teeth can growl down a grizzly. Not perfect but so worth the read.~ from the library

By KidsReads Although a small gray dog named Gretchen belonged to old Mr. Winnike, an extraordinary animal trainer, she changed Newbery Honor-winning author Gary Paulsen’s life. When Paulsen met Gretchen, he was wrung out from his army experiences and life in general. Gretchen seemed to sense his exhaustion, and soon the two drank coffee together and communicated on a regular basis. Though they parted sooner than Paulsen wanted, he never forgot that fabulous little dog and all he learned from her.THIS SIDE OF WILD is the author’s tribute to the many animals, like Gretchen, that have helped make differences by giving him their unconditional love. Animals like Corky, the little three-legged Border Collie who saved him from a bear; like Faulkner, the old lap dog who predicted Paulsen’s future; and like Betty, the horse who saved a wild rabbit from coyotes.Written in Paulsen’s easy, clean style, every chapter brings insight into the life full of magic that he’s shared with animals. Like all of Paulsen’s books, which continue to thrill young readers and have appeared on reading lists for both middle and high school students, THIS SIDE OF WILD is written from the heart.Reviewed by Sally Tibbetts

Relatable Animal Anecdotes By Trudy When author, Gary Paulsen, rescues an elderly poodle named Corky from animal shelter, he discovers a spunk and lack of fear that makes the dog an amazing guard dog who returns the favor of saving a life. Gretchen, a dog who drinks from a mug, convinces the author that animals have an understanding and way of communicating that goes beyond what our minds can fathom. Who knew a mare would actually have the capability of protecting a jackrabbit from coyotes or that a bird could not only mimic a president but maybe even feel lonely? Some fascinating insights into the relationships animals have with humans.Overall, the book felt like a compilation of notes about animals that didn't quite make it into Paulsen's adventure novels. While not Paulsen's best work, the reluctant reader may love the different anecdotes on animals relation to man. With each chapter being a different experience, the older middle grade reader can merely enjoy the short stories rather than think through a plot.Disclosure: I received an ARC copy of the book to facilitate review.
