On a voyage from Boston to Liverpool, Grace Mavis, a young lady reluctantly sailing to join a long-term fiancé, behaves too indecorously with a young man aboard the Patagonia for the society ladies in the company, and cannot, in the end, relieve the strain of her situation except in an obvious, but drastic, way. Instead of treating "The Patagonia" as a lesser experiment in the international theme, this essay analyzes the story as a transnational text. Against the background of the social and cultural history of the Atlantic, it discusses symbolic connections between the illicit affair and suicide of protagonist Grace Mavis on the one hand and the colonial imaginary, technology, and observation on the other. It examines possible influences of late nineteenth-century images of Patagonia on James's story, arguing that the tale plays with the idea of innocent exploration only in order to expose the notion as fictitious. On the steamer leaving Boston, the narrator establishes, in conversation with Grace Mavis, that her fiancé, Mr Porterfield, is a student of architecture in Paris whom he had met some years earlier. Mrs Nettlepoint is a poor traveller and stays in her cabin. She and the narrator discuss her unexpected charge: he thinks Jasper only decided to sail because the girl asked him to keep her spirits up in view of the impending reunion with her poor fiancé.

By betzaida O Espinoza I knew confessing God's word is very important in our life, I knew that even more so having my children confess with their innocent minds would be powerful in our lives! This book is such a great, amazing, beautiful gem!! They don't make books like this anymore! If you're on the fence about getting it, just think, you would spend far more eating out in one sit down than this, what is more important for your kid's life, his faith and what he believes in God or fast food? It's a no brainer! This book contains beautifully easy made sentences even for a 5 year to understand and confess. What we do is have the older children look up the verse, discuss it and then confess our daily confession all day, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and before bed.

"Teaching Toward Democracy" examines the contested space of schooling and school reform with a focus on the unique challenges and opportunities that teaching in a democratic society provides. Teaching in and for democracy involves developing particular qualities of mind that teachers explore and work to develop as they become more effective educators. Some chapters open with familiar experiences in the lives of teachers in schools (working with parents and communities, or dealing with classroom discipline and management) and illuminate that commonplace in new, helpful, and sometimes startling, ways. Other chapters present possible interventions any teacher might make in any classroom for example, using the arts as an organizing center and metaphor for teaching more generally, or rethinking the press of politics on our every day practice. This book foregrounds the central idea that democratic ideals are a necessary starting point and context in which to enact our teaching here and now."

As a teacher, it's very refreshing to hear educational reform ideas that actually work and that can be performed at the classroom level. Every teacher should every now and again sit down with this book for an afternoon (or two) and breeze through it to be reminded of the terrible injustices that confront our students and the simple methods on how to fight those injustices back.

It's Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!, by Chelsea Clinton

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—This basic primer on social issues covers education; poverty, both in the United States and globally; women's rights; public health; and the environment. Taking an upbeat, positive approach, former First Daughter Clinton stresses the importance of being proactive and involved when it comes to current events. She includes many examples of children and teens who have made a difference, and each chapter ends with a list of concrete actions readers can take to "Get Going!" Relevant topics (the antivaccination movement, global warming, the wage gap) are broken down in accessible, if slightly dry, language; while comprehensible, the book occasionally veers into PSA territory. Though Clinton draws upon her own personal experiences in an attempt to make the text more relatable (her tone is that of a gentle and encouraging older sister), references to her more privileged background often feel slightly tone-deaf (for instance, in a section discussing how medical problems such as heart disease disproportionately affect people of color from low socioeconomic backgrounds, the author mentions the lifestyle changes that her father, former president Bill Clinton, made after undergoing bypass surgery). While the cheery yellow cover and chapter headings presented in bubble lettering suggest a younger audience, this is a fairly dense tome (the text is broken up by the occasional chart or serviceable black-and-white photograph) that may prove daunting for those seeking pleasure reading. However, the information is sound, useful, and timely, and each of the chapters would make for good stand-alone options for lesson plans or reports. VERDICT A solid addition to global studies or current events units or projects.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

91 of 99 people found the following review helpful. A actual review from someone who bothered to read the book. Now there's a concept. By Reader Unlike most of the so-called reviewers, I actually read the book. The book is geared toward teens. I'm not the target market, but I like having ideas of gifts for that age group that don't involve tiny screens and earbuds.Ms. Clinton was able to take a lot of complex data about economic and social issues, break it down into plain English, and present it in a way that will engage teenagers. Her bias--and everyone has one--is a lot less apparent than many authors I've read. The information she presents is easy enough to find elsewhere if one wanted to wade through reams of verbose and bland reports. It's one of the few books on these topics out there for this age group that talks to them instead of at them. Her writing style was a little chatty for my tastes, but probably will appeal to teens. Her whole point is that teens should be informed participants of the world around them rather than just parroting some pundit's regurgitated talking points. (That point seems to have been lost on some adults who use product reviews to catcall--probably because they didn't read the book.)

34 of 36 people found the following review helpful. Needed in every family, school, and youth group's library By Kindle Customer Because this book is written to young people about issues that effect young people, and empowers them with stories about other young people in various cultures who got going and did something about it, it should be in every family, school, and youth group's library. Each chapter describes major policy questions for young people to ponder and presents some solutions that people their age have created to address the issues around the world. Their are a lot of role models and heroes to inspire both boys and girls to discuss with their peers in youth groups, book clubs, and schools. And the book itself is a good model for motivating adults who are interested in public policy, mission organizations, and non-profits to get going also.

Best Ebook Going Home Again, by Louise Hannah

The author Louise Hannah is a black teenage girl growing up in the sixties. A lot of things were going on during the sixties: segregation, integration, even immigration. We were at war with Vietnam, a race-divided nation, and then there was the wrath of her daddy's rules. Louise felt like a prisoner in her own home. She needed to find herself, who she was and what she wanted to be. This is why she felt she had to escape the cruel and unfair demands of her daddy's rules.

In Louise's senior year in high school, she met Jay. He had been to Vietnam and was currently a student at Florida Am University. When Jay went home with Louise to get interrogated, even before he could take Louise on a date, his time in the army and in college was the only thing that got him through the doors. Jay returned home from college for the summer and for Christmas.

Louise found out that Jay was not coming because he had to go to Detroit to help his uncles run their nightclub. Louise was devastated; she was in love with Jay. He seemed to be life. She had gotten Jay's number from his sister and called him. They had a fight on the phone, but they made up.

After his job went on strike and closed down, Jay was at the club all the time, day and night. Excerpt from The Present State of Historical Writing in AmericaWhat is the quantity and what the quality of our output of historical monographs? What is upon the average the mental calibre and what the training of those who make them? How do we stand with respect to the publication of histories of a higher order, marked by literary sense or the effort to generalize? How deep or how copious is American thought on the theoretical or philosophical aspects of history? How largely have our historical workers pursued, or appreciated, or been affected by, the advances made in the many other sciences to which history is more or less related? What are the present purposes, nature, and effects of American historical teaching, elementary, secondary, collegiate, or university, which after all represents far more than nine-tenths of the total effort expended on history in this country? In our universities, what is the status of research? How are our historical societies and journals performing their functions? What is the character of those books of history which most hold the public attention - so far as the public attention can be said to be held by any books whatever? What sort or quality of history is presented to the popular mind in the ten-cent magazines and the newspapers, which now constitute almost the sole reading-matter of American mankind? Not one of these questions is easy to answer, yet all must be answered before we can adequately picture to ourselves the present state of historical writing in the United States. It is vain to make any attempt this morning to pursue them all, but it may not be vain to have enumerated them; for if then we perforce narrow the scope of the present paper to a consideration of a manageable portion of the whole field, we shall nevertheless do this with some consciousness of the relation which that portion bears to the whole unmanageable total.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Laurel I have the other two National Geographic mythology books by Donna Jo Napoli, and I had pre-ordered this book and was looking forward to getting it. I like the telling of the myths and the illustrations are vibrant and expressive. What I don't like it how the author judges each of the myths. She doesn't just tell the stories, many of them have little comments from her about how the Aesir are cowardly, or whatever. She clearly has a lot of disdain for this whole collection of tales, I wonder why she even agreed to write this book! I would prefer if she just stuck to the stories and let us draw our own conclusions.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Unpleasant Narration By Dustin Vognild As others have said, the authoress brings a strong bias to her narration. She disparages many of the gods and aspects of the Norse story-telling tradition. The simple fact is: if you appreciate and respect Norse culture and the gods, then find another illustrated collection of the myths. I wanted to repeat what others have said because I personally read the reviews, bought the book anyway, and now wish I had believed them.

22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. bias By D the art is good and the stories are written in a simple easy to read manner, but the author has a strong bias against the gods , she speaks ill of all the gods , but seems to hate THOR, so I would not recommend this book if you practice Asatru as I do.

Graphic novel = readability & appeal By Travis Ann Sherman This book appeared on my desk at the library today; I showed it to a four year old boy who's a big reader this afternoon; he took it from his grandmother and began reading it immediately; they've check it out and taken it home. She had to put a bookmark in it so he would surrender it long enough for the check-out process.I always found fables as being pretty ho hum as a kid although one must say he has held up pretty well for 2500 year old literature. Bright colors and wildly drawn comics breathe new life and humor into the tales. There are a lot of beautifully illustrated versions of the Fables, but I think this will be the one that gets read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fable Comics review By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS reviewer ScottA fable is a short narrative usually encompassing a moral. After Aesop, they also usually contain anthropomorphized animals. But different cultures have different catalogues of stories such as these passed down from generation to generation, mostly by word of mouth. Just recently, fables have become popular again, and Fable Comics takes full advantage of it. Getting a cross section of some of the best in comic artists, Fable Comics lets the artist go crazy providing there is a moral to the story. This leads to some rather eclectic renditions of these classic narratives.Letting the artist go free spins a fresh post-modern twist on classic fables and allows them to let their creativity shine through and some rather unique endings. Twist endings were allowed providing a moral had to be told. These range from the classical interpretation of the tale, to “Artists are Stupid, Art is Dead, Everyone’s a Critic” (some of my all-time favorites). Maris Wicks uses her biology background to elucidate and educate on sea mammals. In “The Dolphin, The Whale and the Sprat,” and James Kochalka pulls out all the traditional stops in “The Fox and the Grapes.” These twists almost seemed necessary to propel the graphic novel forward, but with the traditional morals mixed in, it turned out to be a refreshing mix (although I would have changed a bit of the ordering of the fables).I have to admit, from personal experience, that letting the artist go wild is not necessarily a good thing. Some of the Fables were cute, but contrived; others left you yawning in boredom, wanting to skip ahead to the next one. It’s a good thing fables are generally short. The roster of artists is also in a distinctly American style, cartoonish with few exceptions. This is not a bad thing, however, I would have preferred a more culturally diverse drawing style, but for what the book was trying to convey, it suited me fine. There are a few gems in the lot. Jaime Hernandez does a spectacular job with “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” Roger Langridge handles “”Democles and His Fable” with grace and flair, Shelli Pardline gracefully pens “The Thief and the Watchdog,” and George O’Conner renders in a prince Valiant type manner, the various “Hermes” tales. My personal favorite was R. Sikoryak’s Krazy Kat rendition of “The Lion and the Mouse.” It really spoke in the words and depictions of the famous George Harriman cartoon strip. Skillfully rendered in Harriman’s style, the moral at the end left me giggling inanely for minutes, at passing gags, and the stereotypical morphing backgrounds that Krazy Kat was noted for.If you are a fan of Aesop you will not want to miss this collection. Fable Comics has something for everyone, and the diverse art will defiantly have you lustering after any new artists you come across (or already know, there are a few New York Times artists here). With it’s easy to read format, hopefully you will learn yourself a moral or two.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Courtesy of Mother Daughter Book Club. com By Cynthia Hudson Fables are an age-old way to get a moral across through telling a story. We all know about how the lazy hare tanks in a “can’t-lose race” with a tortoise by being overconfident and neglecting to do the work to win. We may also have learned the lesson about not “crying wolf,” or telling a lie to get attention because people may not believe us when we tell the truth. Prominent graphic artists bring these tales and others to life in Fable Comics, a collection edited by Chris Duffy. Most, though not all, of the stories are based on fables from Aesop. A note in the back of the book defines a fable as “a story with a lesson, usually—not always—starring animals.” The oldest fables may come from many authors and many sources, but some of the more modern ones come from people who are well known, like the Russian satirist Ivan Krilof or the American author Ambrose Bierce. This collection is accessible for kids as young as six, and should be fun for the whole family. Each tale is reimagined by the artists with both words and graphics, and the origin of the fable is labeled. Because different artists illustrate each fable, many styles and color schemes appear in the book. It could be fun to compare them, and to look for other titles by the artists. It could also be interesting for family members to talk about which styles they like best and why.The publisher provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

In this concise introduction, Chad Kautzer demonstrates the shared emancipatory goals and methods of several radical philosophies, from Marxism and feminism to critical race and queer theory. Radical Philosophy examines the relations of theory and practice, knowledge and power, as well as the function of law in creating extralegal forms of domination. Through a critical engagement with the history of philosophy, Kautzer reconstructs important counter-traditions of historical, dialectical, and reflexive forms of critique relevant to contemporary social struggles. The result is an innovative, systematic guide to radical theory and critical resistance.

Radical Philosophy: An Introduction, by Chad Kautzer

Review

"I recommend this book in three respects: as an introductory text for philosophy undergraduates; as an example of self-critique for continental philosophers; and as a window into what may be a different tradition altogether for sundry radical philosophers, as well as mainstream heirs of Thales."― Naomi Zack, Radical Philosophy Review

"Kautzer’s two-pronged thesis about the impetus for and basic purpose of radical philosophy is appealing, even energizing."― Sarah Drews Lucas, Contemporary Political Theory

"Turn the university upside down! Turn philosophy upside down. Think against the world of destruction and oppression and cultivate resistance. This book is a terrific place to start, just what we need."― John Holloway, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico, author of Change the World without Taking Power and Crack Capitalism

"Radical Philosophy: An Introduction constitutes a major scholarly contribution without rival. The analysis of domination through the lenses of race, class, gender, and sexuality in the context of a rich historical engagement is a hallmark of Kautzer’s scholarship. The book concludes with a novel conception of the function of whiteness in extra-legal structures of racism. The elegant style renders the book highly readable, which is an important benefit of a text that has much to offer scholars, students, and activists."― Cynthia Willett, Emory University, author of Interspecies Ethics and Irony in the Age of Empire

"Ever since Socrates, philosophy has been a dangerous endeavor, but it loses its critical edge if practiced only as an academic exercise. Chad Kautzer renews philosophy’s original stance by making a forceful case for an interventionist thinking informed by contemporary social struggles. This book is an indispensable tool for all who want not only to interpret the world but to change it."― Daniel Loick, Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main, author of The Critique of Sovereignty (Kritik der Souveränität)

"Although some may see in 'radical philosophy' an incongruous juxtaposition of terms, Kautzer demonstrates that philosophical practice need not be a detached and contemplative exercise... this accessible book is useful as an introduction to radical political philosophy. Summing Up: Recommended."― J. A. Gauthier, University of Portland, CHOICE Reviews

About the Author

Chad Kautzer is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Social Justice Minor at the University of Colorado Denver. He is co-editor, with Eduardo Mendieta, of Pragmatism, Nation, and Race: Community in the Age of Empire (Indiana University Press, 2009).

This is the rarest kind of philosophy book By Evan Moskowitz If you have any kind of background in philosophy or critical/social theory, you might be tempted to skip over a book with "introduction" in its title. I can't stress enough what a mistake that would be. Whatever your pre-existing grasp of the material might be, it will be stronger by the time you've finished this book-- probably by the time you've finished its introduction. "Radical" is one of those words that many of us, myself included, tend to throw around a lot without always thinking much about what it really means. In language that is at once clear and technically precise, Kautzer lays out a historically and theoretically grounded picture of radical philosophy whose central concern is *always* the question of practical, real-world implications. If you are interested or getting interested in contemporary social justice and don't have much of a philosophy background, this is a perfect place to start. There is technical language, but terms are used clearly, consistently, and responsibly, which makes it a great way to encounter new words and concepts that are important to know. This is the rarest kind of philosophy book: A philosophy book to recommend to friends and family.

This is a great intro to Radical Philosophy By baimudan This is a great intro to Radical Philosophy; it's an updated philosophy textbook with great background on Marxism and class, feminism and queer theory as well as anti-racism and whiteness. The readings are thoughtful reflections for anyone who wants to understand oppression and how to work towards justice in our time. It's not too long, but it touches on so many rich topics that invite further reading. This is one of those books where the footnotes and bibliography are just as interesting as the text itself.

By Terese Howard If you believe that philosophy is not something "experts" do in an office, and that political action is not something that only happens when marching - than you must read this book. Otherwise put, if you want to look deeply at the struggles we fight (i.e. cops killing people of color, environmental destruction, mass homelessness and the criminalization of homelessness...), the structures, the history, and think as you fight...this is the book for you.

We've listened to the cd for over a year now and my 6 and 7 year olds still love it. The book is also amazing. So so fun!! I thought my kids might be aging out of pop up books but they have read it 20 times in the day that we've had it and my son took it for his share day at kindergarten this morning. Thank you for such a happy book!!

She loves them! She also loves the book! We have several of David Carters pop-up books, but this one is more colorful and produced more giggles with each pop-up movement. Nice illustrations and a fun song to play while we look at the book.

Bertrand Russell is considered to be one of the most significant educational innovators of his time. In this influential and controversial work, Russell calls for an education that would liberate the child from unthinking obedience to parental and religious authority. He argues that if the basis of all education is knowledge wielded by love then society can be transformed. One of Bertrand Russell’s most definitive works, the remarkable ideas and arguments in On Education are just as insightful and applicable today as they were on first publication in 1926.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Read if you like Russell or care about education By Jordan Bell This is both an exceptionally good book on education and an especially good place to learn about Russell's philosophy, as it is the outcome of his thinking about how to raise his own children. Like all of Russell's writings, reading this book helps you to clarify your own thoughts because he puts things so precisely and uses such vivid language.Russell discusses too many goals and methods in this book for me to summarize them. The book is divided into three parts. The first is on the aims of education, the second is on training good habits, and the third is on intellectual education. Before making plans for how to educate, we should decide what habits and knowledge we want to teach. In the first chapter Russell gives a thoughtful analysis of what it means for knowledge to be useful. I think his discussion of accuracy in the chapter on the general principles of intellectual education makes the chapter worth reading by itself as an excerpt even if one didn't want to spend time reading the whole book. (The other intellectual virtues are curiosity, open-mindedness, belief that knowledge is possible though difficult, patience, industry, and concentration.) A part of accuracy is sensitivity to small differences, and I really liked Russell's idea of teaching this by learning the dialogue of plays or poetry; memorization is easier to stomach if it's for saying lines in a play where it's clear why you can't glance at the book. Russell makes the point about memorization that one of the benefits of reading good authors isn't just learning how to put together a story but how to put together a sentence, and this improvement of style is best learned by memorization. Even if I know the entire plot of a book and have talked about all the subtext of it, if I haven't burned lines of text into my head by repeated readings then this study might not have done much to improve my writing style. Some lines of text from this book that I would like to burn into my head in the hope of improving my own style are the following from Russell's discussion of teaching history."But I think we should keep in our own minds, as a guiding thread, the conception of gradual chequered progress, perpetually hampered by the savagery which we inherit from the brutes, and yet gradually leading on towards mastery of ourselves and our environment through knowledge. The conception is that of the human race as a whole, fighting against chaos without and darkness within, the little tiny lamp of reason growing gradually into a great light by which the night is dispelled. The divisons between races, nations and creeds should be treated as follies, distracting us in the battle against Chaos and Old Night, which is our one truly human activity."

Interview with the Author:

Q: What makes Trouble Finding Blondie special?

It’s a combination of things. I wanted to write something that I would like to read. I’m a passionate reader who grew up on the classics which I have a ton of respect for. But today’s world is different; faster and more complex. Cluttered, in a certain way. My top picks are soulful stories about complex relationships, human growth, and perseverance.

Q: Your protagonist Simona is a very strong woman. Is she today’s female hero?

Simona arrives in Paris on a fragile road to recovery. She hides her broken heart behind her kick ass attitude and fast-paced lifestyle. Confronted with extraordinary challenges she hides her vulnerability behind her humor and her outgoing attitude. But deep down she is very fragile and just wants to be loved, like we all do. Every decision has consequences, but ultimately my story is about the perseverance of the human spirit.

Q: Is Trouble finding Blondie a story about a love triangle?

It would be a spoiler to deny or admit anything about the difficult relationships of the characters. This book is more about friendships, relationships in general, cultural differences, and different personal backgrounds. I also wanted to show that friendship between a man and a woman can exist. Whether is eventually evolves into something more serious, I will leave to my characters.

Q: One of your readers defined your story as a family saga…

It wasn’t planned that way, initially. But the characters in my head wouldn’t leave. They just kept exploring a multitude of directions. I love the Godfather by Mario Puzo because it’s a classic story of a complex and complicated family. Same with Danielle Steel. The books she writes usually deal with family issues. In both examples you have the good, the bad, the ugly. In a certain way, my story shares similar traits. The difference is that my stories don’t necessarily have happy endings.

Q: Are your characters based on real people?

A writer should always create ‘living people’. Hemingway once said that characters are just caricatures of the real people. My story is fictional. My characters and many scenes are not. Let’s leave it at that.

Q: You have elaborate descriptions of food and fashion.

I guess that is always going to be my flavor - passion for travel, food, and clothes.

Q: Why do you think readers will enjoy your books?

One reviewer wrote that my book reads like a movie script. It’s fast paced. No boring prologues, a lot of dialogues, humor with twists and turns. But it also has the depth of complicated relationships, personal growth, test of characters, and a beautiful love story with juicy passionate attraction. Two very similar souls at different stages of growth.

About the Author

I was born in former Czechoslovakia, behind the Iron Curtain, and under the Communist regime. I grew up with stories from grandparents who survived both World Wars. I was surrounded by boys, naturally turning into a rebellious tomboy. That trade carried me through life and everyone close to me knows not to dare me.

I had been poor and I had been rich. I have lived in many countries; with every color and nationality imaginable. I was raised Christian, but I'm more spiritual than religious. I'm fascinated by the human body and the mind. Philosophy and psychology are my passions. Interestingly enough majority of my heroes are male. Somehow, tough, I keep writing about strong women.

The older I get, the less I know. It must be wisdom. Keep in mind, I'm still just work in progress. I'm an organized freak, a minimalist, a passionate reader and an expert gourmet. I love life, travel, my two amazing boys, my partner and people in my tribe with the same vibe. I'm truly blessed.

I live in paradise with amazing ocean views, mountains, and rainbows of Maui. Even after 20 years I don't take it for granted. I wake up every morning thanking God for another day. Like any survivor, when you know hunger and meet death... you don't sweat the small stuff. I believe laughter is the original Prozac and my drug of choice is coffee and wine.

Why do I write? I have three lifetimes worth of stories from different continents and a long list of amazing characters. Some of them finally made it onto the pages. This is my debut novel...

I love the mix of French in there too. I felt some" mystery" to the story that kept me engaged all the way through. I definitely will be looking for more books from this author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Book!!! By Frank Baranik Great book, great depth of characters, and an amazingly elaborate love triangle that will make you struggle to pick sides. Simona is occasionally too good to be true, but I did love her integrity and love to "do what is right". She somehow seems to make the other protagonists become better people. And though a little hard to admit, she made me rethink my own hierarchy of values, my family relationships and check on my karma account. This story will bring you to tears and make you fall in love at the same time. The ending is a little heartbreaking. I would love to see Simona's story continue...

By JamieJo Trouble Finding Blondie: A story rich with culture, elegance, and strong moral themes. It’s a love story, but has so many tidbits of “life advice” that it feels like more than your typical romance. The passion in the book is just right, not too raunchy, but still spicy. At times I felt like I was living in a fairytale with all of the fancy dinners and places the characters traveled to in Paris. As a struggling writer, I always tell myself that money isn’t everything, but this story sure made it look fun! A fun, quick, beach read for readers who love romance and women’s fiction.
