The New York Times bestselling and National Book Award winning In the Heart of the Sea, soon to be a major motion picture directed by Ron Howard, adapted by the author for young readers. On November 20, 1820, the whaleship Essex was rammed and sunk by an angry whale.  Within minutes, the twenty-one-man crew, including the fourteen-year-old cabin boy Thomas Nickerson, found themselves stranded in three leaky boats in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with barely any supplies and little hope.  Three months later, two of the boats were rescued 4,500 miles away, off the coast of South America.  Of the twenty-one castaways, only eight survived, including young Thomas.  Based on his New York Times best-seller In the Heart of the Sea, Nathaniel Philbrick recreates the amazing events of the ill-fated Essex through the sailors own first-hand accounts, photos, maps, and artwork, and tells the tale of one of the great true-life adventure stories."Horrifyingly engrossing." —Kirkus Reviews"A compelling saga of desperation and survival." —School Library Journal

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very captivating read for a history book By Kevin RK Davis Knowing that most books I read, I put down before finishing, this book was the best FREE book I ever came across. It was the product of a trade in of a well known BUY, SELL, TRADE Entertainment store. It was a catalyst for me to read more Philbrick. I'm already a history buff (usually via documentaries or internet-browsing), but I find Philbrick's writing very good... "Like you're there," which is the hope of most writers, yes? Unlike text-book dabbling I've done as well, Philbrick does a good job, especially in this book, of getting you into 1820s New England whaling, in Philbrick's hometown Nantucket. What I also like about Philbrick's writing, is that he usually answered my questions when something he said would spark curiosity for the reader. In other words, when you're following the action, Philbrick might mention the Azores, and the reader might wonder, "Is the Essex the only boat that stopped there? Was the Azores used a lot in the whaling industry?" And Philbrick at this point would usually deviate from the chronological action and fill the reader in on the Azores and its history in whaling industry. Philbrick did this often with different anecdotes.A quick look through his ending notes section, lets you know that Philbrick did thorough research, and a read through his book lets you know that it paid off! I'm glad to say that this is going to be one of the books I've read BEFORE the movie!Pros +ExcitingInformativeThrillerThoroughCons +I couldn't read it all at one sitting - THAT'S OKAY THOUGH. I like the feeling of "We're going to be here for awhile."
