By RNS A guide by the Director of Off-Campus Studies (Jessica DuPlaga) and a Professor of Political Science (Jeffrey Lantis) at The College of Wooster to help students prepare for the academic aspects of studying abroad. Or, as they put it, "to view the preparation for overseas study, participation in an academically rigorous program, and the return home as parts of a holistic intellectual and emotional journey...[building] the discussion around a contemporary academic development approach to contextualizing knowledge about studying abroad." I know, there's a bit too much academic jargon there -- but, don't let the introductory text scare you. Thankfully, the rest of the book is written in a helpful, practical manner.Divided into six chapters:Ch 1 offers a brief history of studying abroad and provides a good context regarding the advantages and perspectives one gains from such an experience.Ch 2 focuses on providing guidance in choosing the best program for the reader and where information can be found to make such a decision.Ch 3 offers advice in how to best prepare for the experience and covers such practical matters as health, safety and keeping in touch with family back home.Ch 4 helps the reader fully understand the context of the experience, focusing on forging one's personal and cultural identity and advice as to how to best succeed in the "global classroom."Ch 5 covers "stages of reorientation," and how one might assess and reflect upon the experience.Ch 6 suggests ways in which participants can best "market" the experience in one's personal and work lives back home.Concludes with a lengthy list of resources selected to help readers plan and learn about their study abroad experience, chapter notes, a bibliography and index.Highly recommended for faculty participating in study abroad programs and students seeking to get all they can from academic aspects of such an experience. An excellent selection for college and university libraries with significant student involvement in study abroad programs.R. Neil ScottMiddle Tennessee State University

Unlike books which just say GO, this book assesses whether or not this experience is in line with your goals and aspirations, and it also aids students and staff to contextualize the study abroad experience. Ultimately it frames study abroad as a means to an end: study abroad will lead to opportunities to work in cross cultural fields and diverse populations. The book came in good condition, and as I got a used copy, I was quite content with the quality of the book. Thanks
