Why I Teach is an account of my life and the ability to persevere great physical, emotional and social obstacles to achieve my dreams and goals. There are accounts given of inmates including my younger brother who did not persevere to overcome the obstacles in life to achieve their goals and their dreams. Why I Teach gives a roadmap in how to overcome some of the greatest hills, mountains and valleys for those willing to make the right choices in life to avoid the criminal justice system. I visited numerous family members in prison and it had such a profound effect upon me that I knew prison or jail was not the place I wanted to be and certainly not the place I wanted to see others end up. As a teacher in a high poverty community, I see many of my former students making the wrong choices and going down the wrong road in life. I hope that this book provides an insider’s perspective for how youth can avoid the criminal justice system.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. which this book is in the best sense of the term By Prof. Centennius Disclosure: Edward Anderson is a colleague of mine at Oklahoma Centennial Middle/High School in Oklahoma City. He claims that he wrote this mostly as an act of personal therapy, which this book is in the best sense of the term. Mr. Anderson's book is very honest, almost brutally so, as he describes his personal history of a young man growing up with a mother who had emotional problems and in several foster homes, few of which were helpful. In spite of everything, Ed came out okay, and his book can serve as an inspiration for other young people to follow a similar path.Anderson benefited from having some very supportive grandparents. He also was lucky in that some of his youthful escapades could have had very bad consequences. Still, he was able to keep himself out of trouble to where he was able to join the army Military Police where he attained the rank of Captain. He also worked in the prison system and from there came to be a teacher in Oklahoma City where he works to help other young people avoid the trouble that ensnared his brother and nearly brought him down.An extra feature of the book is a series of letters from prison inmates, including his brother, warning young people not to follow their paths. The book has some editing problems and at times the narrative wanders away from a unified topic, but it is very easy to read in one evening. Young people could read this for their outside reading and greatly profit from it.
