Insightful, poignant, and inspiring—with touches of humor throughout—The Train chronicles the coming-of-age of a young man living on the Gulf Coast of Alabama during the 1950s and 1960s. It is the story of how one thoughtful boy—gradually forged “as a Damascene smith might have shaped a blade” by his father, his heroes, his family, and his friends—becomes “a harder, stronger substance that will take a keener edge.”
This debut novel by Tony Jordan, a former senior CIA operations officer and Air Rescue pilot, introduces Jack Jourdain and Jean-Louis Thibodeaux, two remarkable young men—who are showcased in future volumes—as they confront real-life military and national security challenges.
Inspired by actual events, the book considers the importance of imagination and visualization as it explores how family and community influence the formation of core personal values including love, duty, and honor.
The author “knows the human heart and the way of the world like Faulkner, but writes like Hemingway.” —Daniel W. Jacobowitz, USAF (Retired)
The Train is “a compelling read that shows you can’t go wrong with a classics education.”—Ruth Overman Fischer, George Mason University (Retired)

Earnest and intimate; a window into the deep South of the 1950s and 60s By Amazon Customer Earnestly written with the kind of emotional honesty rarely seen outside memoir, this Bildungsroman of a young man growing up in the mid-century American South is an intriguing window into a culture that doesn't lack for overly romanticized or nostalgic novels. 'The Train' manages to avoid both of these; it's narrator Jack Jourdain speaks from a place of true sincerity in experience. For all that we learn of Jack's contented childhood, meaningful father-son relationship, accomplished athletic career, and academic accomplishments, there is an ever present struggle to find meaning, do right, and contend with the realities of life. We are left with a Jack Jourdain who hasn't become the next General Douglass MacArthur his 11 year-old self so confidently envisioned, but a young man mature enough to realize that you cannot always know the right way, you can only know your own way.

By Amazon Customer For those who think Faulkner's South is the real thing, "The Train" will change their minds about the South forever. This true to life narrative of growing up in Mobile, Alabama chronicles the joy and love of being taught to be a man bya loving but doomed father. The boy's father is Southern to the core, yet free of hate and fear. The writing is clear and accurately descriptive of the topography of the land and the attitudes of the people who live on it. If you've never really known Alabama as it was 50 years ago, this book will wipe out your preconceptions while telling a great story of a family functioning under circumstances that shape the young narrator into a testament to his father's love and devotion.
