I got this book for my brother and sister-in-law who have a daughter in high school with the intention of just skimming through before sending it on. To my surprise, it hooked me. Loved the preface that told how the author went from accountant to educational consultant simply by identifying a need and putting in lots of hard work to learn about and fill a need all too real for millions of families with children heading toward college. By the time I finished the book I wished it had been available to me when my kids were heading to college and I wished it had been available to send to my brother sooner. Easy to read, entertaining and informative.

I like how Jamie also makes you come to grips with reality on a pre-college teen's motivational concerns and the parental role in guidance. Very good book...you can tell she's an expert. I have nothing at all negative to say about this book. Jamie personally helped a great friend of mine get her kids into Vanderbilt, Auburn and Carnegie Mellon and my friend didn't go broke!

54 of 54 people found the following review helpful. Funny, touching, left me hungry for more By Richard E. Spilman Jenny Gardiner's new novel, Slim to None, starts with a marvelous premise. Abby Jenning's, the food critic for a major New York newspaper, eats her way out of her job. One of the job requirements of reviewing restaurants is to remain incognito. After a photo of her appears in a competing newspaper, and her girth makes the prospect of disguising herself unlikely, her editor reassigns Abby to a desk job for six months. In that time she needs to lose weight, as well as come to terms with her relationship with food, her husband and a family she didn't know existed. She is assisted in her efforts by a homeless man who may not be as he seems, her dog Cognac, and a philandering friend. She must also do battle with a decidedly sneaky and corrupt colleague, who is standing in for her as restaurant reviewer and wants her job on a permanent basis.The book is very funny, often unexpectedly touching and insightful. It also includes recipes at the end of many of the chapters. Overall it left me hungry for chicken and crab with cheese in phyllo and for more of Jenny Gardner's writing. Jenny Gardiner's Slim to None is simply great fun.

As someone who isn't a twenty-something but still likes "Chick Lit", I appreciated that the main character was a little older and contemplating some major life issues. It's a very entertaining and easy read with more depth/drama (but no tears, promise!) than typical in these types of books. I thought it was a light read that was resolved - but not predictably - at the end. At the same time, there's room for more to come, so I hope the author writes more books in the series! One of the best books in this genre that I've read in a while. (Agreeing with previous reviewers, there are a few minor editing errors; if 4.5 rating was possible, with the 1/2 star reduction based only on this.)

Slim to None By Samantha J Abbie Jennings loves her job as Manhattan's top food critic- until her identity is revealed and her unflattering picture with ever-expanding waistline is splashed across the newspapers. She becomes the joke of the town as the overweight food lover, and promptly loses her job at the New York Post since she can no longer go incognito to restaurants. Abbie takes this opportunity to finally go on that diet and shed some pounds, but struggles with motivation and the reasoning behind her relationship with food. To add to Abbie's problems, she is going through a difficult time with her husband, who is trying to persuade her to leave the city and finally start a family. It takes the guidance of an unusual friend to finally help Abbie see what she really wants out of life.Slim to None by Jenny Gardiner is a good story. I didn't get real invested in the main character, and some off the story lines seemed just a bit off for me. I did like the plot, and the descriptions of some of the delectable dishes made me start eating while reading, but it just wasn't enough. Sometimes, Abbie's character came off as incredibly selfish, never really listening to her husband and continually doing things the way she wanted. There is also a best friend in the story, who I never could quite figure out what she was doing there. She popped up at random times, and during most of the meat of the story, she wasn't mentioned at all, only to return once again at the end. I found myself confused throughout the duration, as the writing was a bit all over the place and jumping from scene to scene without any real fluidity. Like I said earlier, I did like the story, I thought it was interesting though not necessarily unique, and I believe some good life lessons can be taken away from the main character's troubles. Slim to None won't be on my Favorites List, but I think some other chick lit lovers will be able to appreciate this story.

From the Author Behind the Curtain took me back to the town I first created in Behind the Altar. By dotland101 Though the third book of Behind the Love Trilogy, this book makes an enjoyable fast pace contemporary romance reading, a good stand-alone story of a would-rather-forget childhood memory in a small town which caught a reality TV show producer's attention. A chance of a life time opportunity at an acting career which threatens Lisa's relationships with her sister, her best friend, and her old childhood friend (which could be more than friend), and just about with everyone else in town upon her return to this small town with TV show and the camera crews in tow. Forced Lisa to find out which is more important in life for her; career vs family and friends who love her.

I still don't feel ready to say goodbye to Victory, Florida, but I did love the way the trilogy ended. This book had such a beautiful storyline, following a couple new characters, but giving us such different and more complex and human sides to existing characters. I was in tears at the end, just so incredibly moved by how the story all came together. I am keeping fingers crossed we have another chance to hang out with these characters and meet the new generation of Victory. My only complaint is that the book goes to fast. I was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this storyline was very unique and I read with great anticipation of what would happen next and how they would get out of it. Lisa wasn’t as likable as I wanted her to be, but Tommy was a prince, his mom was amazing, and as always, Sally Jean was the hit of the book. We seriously need a Sally Jean story! Everyone, characters and readers alike, want Sally Jean to find her true love. hint hint

I always thought that people should learn how to take care of their finances from a very young age but that unfortunately isn't the case. By the time they are out of college and on their own they are in piles of dept because they never learned how to manage their own money. This book is a great overview of what you should be focusing on when it comes to your financial needs. It is filled with subjects that can be complicated but written in a way that it was very easy to understand. I plan on having my nieces read through this book to give them an understanding of what they should be paying attention to and leading them a step in the right financial direction. Not only did I really enjoy reading this book, I appreciate the authors intent in helping people learn about this subject, it is needed and there should be more like it!

It seems a daunting task but can be accomplished with some planning and perseverance. As mentioned above, you can collect funds for your business from the savings of your job; take loans from the bank, friends or family. Taking loans is recommended only when you have at least 30% of the total funding required already secured with you. A business totally dependent on loans is very difficult to run. With time, if you do not make much profits, frustration might set in.
