The Halfway House for Writers, by Valley Haggard

Review "Twenty pages into your book and it feels like I've finally found my bible. It has literally never occurred to me that anyone else felt this way. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" --Susan Howson, RVA News"...[A]n absolutely necessary handbook for anyone who has ever felt that burning longing to write and all the tangled emotions that come with it: doubt, anxiety, fear, self-flagellation... Valley offers prompts, gentle guidance and practical advice on how to approach this tricky process of extracting splinters and turning them into stories. If you write, or want to write, or even wish you could write, read this book. It's for you." --Melissa Scott Sinclair, author of The End"The Halfway House for Writers is a gem of a book. Filled with revealing personal anecdotes and honest advice it's a combination memoir/self-help book disguised as a handbook for aspiring writers." --Noah Scalin, author of Skull-A-Day"The Halfway House for Writers is a book I'll read again. And again. And again... I couldn't put it down.... The title is deceiving. I think Halfway House will inspire artists of all kinds, not just writers. It nurtures the creative spirit. Valley's approach is fresh and honest and real--a new wisdom for a new decade." --A.B. Westrick, author of Brotherhood

From the Author I've been brought up by high school literary magazines and college creative writing workshops. I have been a camper, counselor and director of creative writing camps for kids. I have been in writing groups and writing classes. I have interviewed authors and reviewed their books. I have judged fiction contests, fellowships and awards for children and adults. I have taught creative nonfiction workshops, classes and retreats. I have been a book editor, published in anthologies and authored first person columns.I am in recovery from everything. Alcohol and drugs and money and donuts and love. But also a lifelong addiction to terrorizing myself as a writer, editing myself down to the bone, comparing my writing to everyone else's and basically sacrificing myself at the altar of unrealistic expectations. I have been searching for a process by which to lay down my weapons, to stop holding myself hostage, to stop strangling my work before it has a chance to breathe. I am learning to become a gentle editor and a kind friend to myself on the page. What follows are some of the most essential things I have learned about writing after studying hundreds of books and teaching hundreds of writers of every level and degree of experience. In this handbook, I have written about some of the most common themes and threads that have arisen repeatedly in my classes, practical advice for getting started on the page, the story of my own journey towards healing as a writer, some samples of my work that have emerged from my practice and an invitation to submit your own writing to my online literary magazine, Life in 10 Minutes.I am not in charge of the Halfway House--I am a student of it. Every single day when I sit down to write I am a beginner. Whether you have written every day of your life or none, welcome. We are all on the same blank page together.

About the Author Valley Haggard has written in short and long form all her life. She is a big fan of the postcard, the 6-word memoir and drawers full of unfinished manuscripts. She has slept in tents, hostels, motels, couches, tool sheds, log cabins, bunk beds and ship bowels for short periods of time and the house she grew up in for much longer than that. She has lived in Virginia, New York, Italy, Colorado, Arkansas, and Alaska, holding jobs as a Waffle House waitress, Dude Ranch Cabin Girl, cruise ship stewardess and hotel maid. She has written book reviews, author interviews and first person columns; judged fiction contests and fellowships and sat on non-profit writing boards. The founder and co-director of Richmond Young Writers, she leads creative nonfiction marathons, workshops and retreats for adults. She has a handsome husband, a brilliant son, an addictive personality and a voracious appetite for all things word.

Sobel When it comes time for Natalie Goldberg to pass on the baton to the next generation's writing muse, Valley Haggard should be first in line. "Halfway House for Writers" will not only open the doors to your imagination, it will reveal that the house itself remains under construction and you can add doors wherever you want them, including one on the upstairs bathroom ceiling that leads to a 360-degree panoramic view of your ragged slipshod jerry-rigged back-alley neighborhood, though somehow still shimmering with incandescent light. Valley's book will inspire even the most blocked slug of a non-disciplined, self-hating wannabe writer to edge forward to the blank page and dare to begin putting words down, for better or worse, trusting that a hidden font of wild creative revelation lies just beneath the surface of mundane mind, just waiting to storm the gates of self-censorship and explode into the world of free expression.

39 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Awesome :) By B. Alcat This box set includes the four books that compound Tamora Pierce's "The Immortals" series: "Wild Magic", "Wolf-Speaker", Emperor Mage" and "The Realms of the Gods". If you like fantasy books and haven't been lucky enough to read other books written by Pierce you will discover a great new author. But if you are already a fan of the author, I can assure you something: these books won't change your opinion of her skills. In a way, it is more of the same, with a different plot, but lots of adventure, magic, humour and action. "The Immortals" is also set in Pierce's Tortall, and if you have read her "Song of the Lioness" series you will have the possibility of meeting old friends again, for example Alanna, George, King Jonathan and Queen Thayet, Raoul and Duke Gareth.Notwithstanding that, there are also new characters, the most important one being Daine, an orphan girl who is 13 years old and can communicate with animals, because she has "Wild magic". As we read the books, we go along with her in her long and difficult journey to master her skills, and make peace with what and who she is. Her teacher will be a powerful mage, Numair, and her friends a large number and sometimes a little strange, because due to her powers she isn't confined to make friends among the "two-leggers".One of the advantages of buying the box set is that by doing so you can have all the books at hand, thus being able to start another book as soon as you finish the previous one without having to run to buy it. And believe me, you will enjoy them so much that is highly likely that you would do exactly that, if you were to buy them one by one. Moreover, buying them in the box set is cheaper :)I started reading Tamora Pierce when I was 12, but I still read many of her books from time to time, even though I am quite a bit older now. The reason?. Pierce's books are great for teens, but some adults also enjoy them. I guess it is more or less what happens with Harry Potter's books, loved by children, teens and adults that have young hearts. All in all, I highly recommend these books, as enjoyable reading material that will make you smile. Enjoy them !!!Belen Alcat

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. AWESOME! By A Customer I first picked Wild Magic up in Borders as a 'filler' while I waited for the next Harry Potter. (I bought it because of the horses on the cover) It sat on my shelf for two months before I decided to read it. Much to my surprise, I found that I liked these books BETTER than Harry Potter! ( And that is saying something comsidering how obsessed I was with those!)I was immediately hooked when I began the first Chapter and I couldn't put it down. By the time I nearly finished with the last book in the quartet, I was thoroughly depressed at the prospect of finishing Daine's story. I was so obsessed with the need to savor this book, that I wrapped it in several layers of rubber bands and hid it under my mattress. When I actually did finish it, I was depressed for a while knowing that there are no more books written from Daine's perspective. That is, I was depressed until I found Fanfiction.net. I have read every single piece of fanfiction about these books on the site, and I have even written a few of my own! This book is so real that after a while, you can almost start to believe in Magic. Tamora Pierce creates such vivid, involving characters, that I literally fell in love with everyone; from the dashing Mage Numair, to the feisty pony Cloud.I would recommend this book to anyone (not just kids) who likes good fantasy/adventure/romance books!!I read these books first, but I recommend reading The Song of the Lioness first. (Which was also an awesome book!)HAPPY READING!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Wow By A Customer After reading many fantasy books, and enjoying their simplicity and fun, I thought I might have seen everything there was to see about fantasy books, though I would keep reading them. Soon after this unbelievably wrong thought crossed my mind, I picked up the first Alanna book, and saw how amazing certain types of fiction could be. When I finished the entire Lioness Quartet, I rushed to the library to pick up the Immortals Series. I was not let down, and certainly no disappointment showed through my awe of Ms. Pierce's writing, as not formulaic as humanly possible. Throughout the series, you are given interesting cliff hangers and shocking surprises. Daine turns into a very real girl, going through her rather difficult trials. Numair adds humour and grounding to the story, and is also a wonderful character. You wont be disappointed by the appearances of characters from the Song of the Lioness series. As Daine comes to grips with her magic and past, her world is thrown into chaos with political and romantic intrigues around her, and the world as humans know it is disappearing, one immortal sighting at a time. As you will soon find, Immortals are creatures from the Divine Realms who were imprisoned by mages many years ago. They start appearing throughout the lands, evil ones such as Spidrens- spiders with human heads, hurroks- evil winged horses, and ambivalent ones, griffins, and others. These, mixed with political intrigue, and Daine's uncanny ability- soon discovered to be magic- to talk to animals are woven in the beautifully enticing books. You wont be disappointed if you buy them.

I Am Not My Circumstance came about when I finally had an awakening and began to tap into why God created me. Your circumstances, rather derived from, child molestation, domestic abuse, drug abuse, growing up with both parents being absent in the home, adoption, or even being bullied. I could go on and on. However, I call all of these, “circumstances, or SO WHATS!” In Matthew 7:7-8 of the Holy Bible, it states, “Ask and it shall be given t you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you.” Growing up, no one taught me how to deal with “me.” In this book, I will reveal to you how I learned to deal with my “inner me.” This book will advise you on how to deal with YOU and the illusion that your circumstances create in which are all designed to keep you living in fear.

The Kid's Guide to Exploring Nature (BBG Guides for a Greener Planet), by Brooklyn Botanic Garden Educators

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—This appealing, textbook–style introduction to nature is broken down by season. The title begins with some general information about ways in which naturalists observe nature, suggestions for keeping a journal, and places to explore. The sections are subdivided by habitat (ponds, meadows, beaches, lakes), and there's also an emphasis on ways to explore plant and wildlife in urban areas. The author covers a wide variety of topics that highlight seasonal changes. For instance, the section on "Winter" deals with "Life Under Ice," while "Autumn" discusses "Leaf Color." Page-long job descriptions scattered throughout delve into skills and interests needed for various nature-related occupations (horticulturist, taxonomist, botanical illustrator, and others). "Nature Activities," such as "Make Your Own Bug Spray" and "Build a Boat That Stays Afloat" using only materials readers can find at their feet, make learning fun. "Tips for Adult Caregivers" are also included. Illustrations vary from full-page scenes of different habitats (labeled with names of the plant and animal species) to smaller photographs and drawings of nature items—seed pods, leaves in fall colors, fungi, bee varieties. The lessons and activities here will motivate many readers to explore further.—Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Public Library, OH

Sosa In the interest of full disclosure, I am the administrator of the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Children's Science Books. This book is the 2015 winner in the hands-on science category. The reason for my purchase is that we like the book so much we are featuring in a big back-to-school book giveaway in August. First let me say that this book is beautiful; the outstanding illustrations are a delight. Written by the education staff at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the book is based on their years of experience sharing nature with children. It is organized by seasons and can be read and enjoyed by an individual child who loves to explore nature, or it can be used as a family or classroom inspiration. The focus is on developing the skills that any naturalist needs to explore and learn about nature and it does so in a way that instills respect and even a love of nature in young people. Highly recommended.

An extensive amount of information given that its target audience is children, and wonderful illustrations that provide a starting point for kids to learn to identify various things in nature. My 8 year old has been reading and rereading this week for several weeks, and has gotten so much out of it. This is definitely a good addition to your personal library.

It is in city parks, suburban woods, and along the shore lines. Nature is wherever you look. This book will help young nature lovers discover how to view the world with a scientific eye. A handy and well illustrated guide for your young explorers.

By Western Reader This delightful compilation of five of Ginny’s writings is just the ticket to get one in the mood for Christmas, romance, and all things magical. From the first page to the last, I was entertained, intrigued, and completely satisfied. Each story includes characters that are believable, even the ones who might not be as likeable as one would want (after all, a good tale needs at least one not-so-wonderful character to round out the picture, so to speak).Of the five, my favorite for hilarity has to be the second tale – ‘The Holiday Bride’. This one had me laughing out loud, and I would not have been at all surprised if the Keystone Kops had shown up ... it’s a slapstick comedy that begs to be turned into a made-for-TV movie. My favorite for romance? That has to be book number four – ‘Beach Blanket Santa’. Sweet and romantic and so very lovely in its conclusion (book number five is a close runner-up ... clever plot and a rooted-for HEA).I recommend this collection to all those who want to have a good read. I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Unexpected Romantic Second Chances at Christmas By Joan Mueller This mix of holiday adventures brings to the reader just the right zing to make the holiday happier, a Christmas romance. The author engages the reader in the story from the first page providing a storyline that has humor, suspense, and a connection to the heartstrings of every person as they root for the successful outcome of each romance. Each story in the series keeps the reader engaged. My particular favorite was The Holiday Bride in which the child asks for a mother for Christmas. I received an ARC for review. I would highly recommend this book. I plan to read them again and again.

Nice, Sweet Christmas Stories By lsm71877 I have received a copy of these stories in exchange for an honest review. The Christmas Catch -The main woman is a single mom named Christine who has lost the belief in Christmas after passed away leaving her to raise their young son alone. Her friend tells her to take time off and take her son Tyler to Vermont for the holiday and try to recharge her batteries. While she and Tyler are in Vermont she meets John and both Christine and John get more than they bargained for.I found The Christmas Catch to be a wonderful Christmas story with some heartache and dreams. It was a nice read. The Holiday Bride-Lucy was a waitress engaged to a man who really had no time for her or anything else in his life so when she falls and gets amnesia is it any wonder she was in no hurry to find him or anything to do with her old life? It just happened to be that the family that she “woke up to” had a little girl who had wished for a mommy for Christmas and well, the rest was Christmas Magic. The Holiday Bride was a bit suspenseful since Lucy had developed amnesia and had no clue who she really was. It had enough love and heartache too to keep you wanting everything to work out in the end.Mistletoe In Maine -A single, divorced mom working too hard to make up for a father who never keeps his promise of being there and the fact that money is a problem for the holidays, somehow tells her 2 kids that they will be going to a lodge in Maine for the holidays. Luckily for her it not only works out that they enjoyed their stay, her daughter sees the moose shes after, but the mom falls in love while shes there!Mistletoe In Maine is one of those Christmas stories that gives divorced moms the hope that there is love out there again.Beach Blanket Santa -Two people with a past end up at the same cabin on the coast for one stormy Christmas week. Since theres no way off the coast but the ferry (and its down until further notice) what are they to do but actually get to know one another this time? Will they actually learn that they can't live without one another or when the ferry is usable again will one leave the other behind for good this time?Baby, Be Mine -A will stating that you have to get married within 2 months, what do you do? Help your best friend that you've been in love with since you were kids find a husband is the most logical choice right? Follow the story as Jack helps Nikki find a match so that she can collect the money from her Aunt's will based on the 2 stipulations put in there. Will Nikki ever realize though that Jack has been in love with her from the start?

“You never knew, then?” “Knew?” “I was pregnant, Harry. When you left, I found out a couple of weeks later.” I never knew I had a son. So, imagine my surprise when I ran into an old girlfriend, thinking it was a nice walk down memory lane, only to learn she’d given birth to my son and gave him up. With my permission. At least, she thought she had my permission. “You have to go find him,” my sister, Libby, told me a few days later when I poured the whole story out to her. “He’s your kid. You owe it to yourself to know he’s okay.” And that was exactly what I planned to do. NOTE: This is the first book of a three part serial and it ends with a cliffhanger. Parts 2 and 3 will be released soon.

I'll try not to give anything away, although I don't know where book 1 ends and the others began being that I read them in an anthology.Harrison is working for the family business he was forced into after his father dies. Working in business was never his calling, but he had to do this in order to take care of his mother and sister, and try to keep his brother out of trouble. It starts with a harried secret, one that I didn't see coming. Being the person Harrison is, he needed to figure out how to make the right choice for himself while living and working for his other responsibilities. He moves from Oregon to Texas to determine to right the wrongs done to him, and he meets Penelope- the main person standing in the way of correcting his past.Penelope and her little brother JT were together and struggling to keep their lives together. Their parents passed away three years prior, which is when she came home to Texas to make a life for her and JT. Of course this wasn't the life she wanted nor dreamed about, but she was making the best of the cards dealt to her. This book had secrets and lies and love all rolled into one. I have really adjusted to this author, and the writing itself is very good. I wish the ending wasn't rushed., that's my only issue with this book. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
