Bertrand Russell is considered to be one of the most significant educational innovators of his time. In this influential and controversial work, Russell calls for an education that would liberate the child from unthinking obedience to parental and religious authority. He argues that if the basis of all education is knowledge wielded by love then society can be transformed. One of Bertrand Russell’s most definitive works, the remarkable ideas and arguments in On Education are just as insightful and applicable today as they were on first publication in 1926.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Read if you like Russell or care about education By Jordan Bell This is both an exceptionally good book on education and an especially good place to learn about Russell's philosophy, as it is the outcome of his thinking about how to raise his own children. Like all of Russell's writings, reading this book helps you to clarify your own thoughts because he puts things so precisely and uses such vivid language.Russell discusses too many goals and methods in this book for me to summarize them. The book is divided into three parts. The first is on the aims of education, the second is on training good habits, and the third is on intellectual education. Before making plans for how to educate, we should decide what habits and knowledge we want to teach. In the first chapter Russell gives a thoughtful analysis of what it means for knowledge to be useful. I think his discussion of accuracy in the chapter on the general principles of intellectual education makes the chapter worth reading by itself as an excerpt even if one didn't want to spend time reading the whole book. (The other intellectual virtues are curiosity, open-mindedness, belief that knowledge is possible though difficult, patience, industry, and concentration.) A part of accuracy is sensitivity to small differences, and I really liked Russell's idea of teaching this by learning the dialogue of plays or poetry; memorization is easier to stomach if it's for saying lines in a play where it's clear why you can't glance at the book. Russell makes the point about memorization that one of the benefits of reading good authors isn't just learning how to put together a story but how to put together a sentence, and this improvement of style is best learned by memorization. Even if I know the entire plot of a book and have talked about all the subtext of it, if I haven't burned lines of text into my head by repeated readings then this study might not have done much to improve my writing style. Some lines of text from this book that I would like to burn into my head in the hope of improving my own style are the following from Russell's discussion of teaching history."But I think we should keep in our own minds, as a guiding thread, the conception of gradual chequered progress, perpetually hampered by the savagery which we inherit from the brutes, and yet gradually leading on towards mastery of ourselves and our environment through knowledge. The conception is that of the human race as a whole, fighting against chaos without and darkness within, the little tiny lamp of reason growing gradually into a great light by which the night is dispelled. The divisons between races, nations and creeds should be treated as follies, distracting us in the battle against Chaos and Old Night, which is our one truly human activity."

Can true love conquer Andre’s betrayal and the secrets in Simona’s life? Is Simona willing to compromise her perfect life for a little trouble?

Interview with the Author:

Q: What makes Trouble Finding Blondie special?

It’s a combination of things. I wanted to write something that I would like to read. I’m a passionate reader who grew up on the classics which I have a ton of respect for. But today’s world is different; faster and more complex. Cluttered, in a certain way. My top picks are soulful stories about complex relationships, human growth, and perseverance.

Q: Your protagonist Simona is a very strong woman. Is she today’s female hero?

Simona arrives in Paris on a fragile road to recovery. She hides her broken heart behind her kick ass attitude and fast-paced lifestyle. Confronted with extraordinary challenges she hides her vulnerability behind her humor and her outgoing attitude. But deep down she is very fragile and just wants to be loved, like we all do. Every decision has consequences, but ultimately my story is about the perseverance of the human spirit.

Q: Is Trouble finding Blondie a story about a love triangle?

It would be a spoiler to deny or admit anything about the difficult relationships of the characters. This book is more about friendships, relationships in general, cultural differences, and different personal backgrounds. I also wanted to show that friendship between a man and a woman can exist. Whether is eventually evolves into something more serious, I will leave to my characters.

Q: One of your readers defined your story as a family saga…

It wasn’t planned that way, initially. But the characters in my head wouldn’t leave. They just kept exploring a multitude of directions. I love the Godfather by Mario Puzo because it’s a classic story of a complex and complicated family. Same with Danielle Steel. The books she writes usually deal with family issues. In both examples you have the good, the bad, the ugly. In a certain way, my story shares similar traits. The difference is that my stories don’t necessarily have happy endings.

Q: Are your characters based on real people?

A writer should always create ‘living people’. Hemingway once said that characters are just caricatures of the real people. My story is fictional. My characters and many scenes are not. Let’s leave it at that.

Q: You have elaborate descriptions of food and fashion.

I guess that is always going to be my flavor - passion for travel, food, and clothes.

Q: Why do you think readers will enjoy your books?

One reviewer wrote that my book reads like a movie script. It’s fast paced. No boring prologues, a lot of dialogues, humor with twists and turns. But it also has the depth of complicated relationships, personal growth, test of characters, and a beautiful love story with juicy passionate attraction. Two very similar souls at different stages of growth.

About the Author

I was born in former Czechoslovakia, behind the Iron Curtain, and under the Communist regime. I grew up with stories from grandparents who survived both World Wars. I was surrounded by boys, naturally turning into a rebellious tomboy. That trade carried me through life and everyone close to me knows not to dare me.

I had been poor and I had been rich. I have lived in many countries; with every color and nationality imaginable. I was raised Christian, but I'm more spiritual than religious. I'm fascinated by the human body and the mind. Philosophy and psychology are my passions. Interestingly enough majority of my heroes are male. Somehow, tough, I keep writing about strong women.

The older I get, the less I know. It must be wisdom. Keep in mind, I'm still just work in progress. I'm an organized freak, a minimalist, a passionate reader and an expert gourmet. I love life, travel, my two amazing boys, my partner and people in my tribe with the same vibe. I'm truly blessed.

I live in paradise with amazing ocean views, mountains, and rainbows of Maui. Even after 20 years I don't take it for granted. I wake up every morning thanking God for another day. Like any survivor, when you know hunger and meet death... you don't sweat the small stuff. I believe laughter is the original Prozac and my drug of choice is coffee and wine.

Why do I write? I have three lifetimes worth of stories from different continents and a long list of amazing characters. Some of them finally made it onto the pages. This is my debut novel...

I love the mix of French in there too. I felt some" mystery" to the story that kept me engaged all the way through. I definitely will be looking for more books from this author.

By Frank Baranik Great book, great depth of characters, and an amazingly elaborate love triangle that will make you struggle to pick sides. Simona is occasionally too good to be true, but I did love her integrity and love to "do what is right". She somehow seems to make the other protagonists become better people. And though a little hard to admit, she made me rethink my own hierarchy of values, my family relationships and check on my karma account. This story will bring you to tears and make you fall in love at the same time. The ending is a little heartbreaking. I would love to see Simona's story continue...

By JamieJo Trouble Finding Blondie: A story rich with culture, elegance, and strong moral themes. It’s a love story, but has so many tidbits of “life advice” that it feels like more than your typical romance. The passion in the book is just right, not too raunchy, but still spicy. At times I felt like I was living in a fairytale with all of the fancy dinners and places the characters traveled to in Paris. As a struggling writer, I always tell myself that money isn’t everything, but this story sure made it look fun! A fun, quick, beach read for readers who love romance and women’s fiction.

Firewalker (The Worldwalker Trilogy), by Josephine Angelini

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—This work picks up right where Trial by Fire (Feiwel & Friends, 2014) left off. Lily Proctor has survived the Pyre but is badly burned. She had enough presence of mind to transport herself and Rowan Fall from alternate Salem to her universe so she could heal. While there, characters from the previous volume reappear, including Tristan and Breakfast, along with some newcomers. Lily and Rowan discover they have magic in Lily's world, too, and have to decide if they share the secret of magic. While they are in Lily's world, Lillian, the worldwalking ruler of the 13 Cities, is not content to let Lily go, and she will do what she must to bring her back to alternate Salem because only Lily has the power to save it. Angelini takes readers on a high stakes and fast-paced ride once again. The author blends fantasy, science fiction, mythology, and light romance seamlessly, and this tale will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. VERDICT A satisfying second series installment that will leave teens anxious for the next title, especially after the cliff-hanger ending.—Stephanie Charlefour, Wixom Public Library, MI

Review

“Lily is a female character that teen girls can find something of themselves in, no matter who they are. Her transformation, great power, and humility are admirable, making her a very likable character. Readers will also like the dreamy male characters that fall at Lily’s feet. Fans of paranormal romance will find a lot to like in this series.” ―VOYA

“Lily's evolution is thrilling, and readers will eagerly follow her into battle, just like her devoted mechanics. A sequel of surprising depth and drama.” ―Kirkus

Review for Firewalker by Josephine Angelini By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***Firewalker by Josephine AngeliniBook One of The Worldwalker TrilogyPublisher: Feiwel & FriendsPublication Date: September 1, 2015Rating: 3 starsSource: ARC sent by the publisherSummary (from Goodreads):Worlds divide, magic slays, and love lies in the second book of Josephine Angelini’s The Worldwalker Trilogy."You think I’m a monster, but my choices, as ruthless as they seem, are justified."Lily is back in her own universe, and she's ready to start a new life with Rowan by her side. True, she almost died in the Pyre that fueled their escape from New Salem, and must hide her magic for the safety of everyone she cares about, but compared to fighting the Woven, the monstrous creatures inhabiting the alternate Salem, life is looking pretty good.Unfortunately, Lillian, ruthless ruler of the 13 Cities, is not willing to let Lily go that easily. If she can’t persuade Lily to return to her world, she will force her to come back by doing away with the ones she loves.Picking up right where Trial By Fire left off, Firewalker is another sexy, fast-paced, heartbreaking thrill ride from internationally bestselling author Josephine Angelini! What I Liked:I feel like waaay too many books I've read in the past few months have been three-star novels. Not quite terrible, but not great either. Might recommend, probably will never read again. I absolutely LOVED Trial by Fire! And in terms of Firewalker, it was decent! A good sequel, just... heartbreaking. Among other things, but the heartbreak was too much for me. I can't say much without spoiling things (I'll be keeping this as vague was possible), but this book left me too sad and not in a good way.Lily is back in her world, with Rowan in tow. Her mother and Juliet find them, and slowly, Lily heals. She goes back to school and discovers that several of her friends are drawn to her - meaning they have power, and are to be part of her coven. And it's a good thing too, because Lily is going to need all the help she can get - Lillian is after her, trying to bring her back into her world. Sacrifices will be made, lives will be lost, and relationships will be broken, as Lily attempts to unravel secrets and the past in order to save the future. The world-building is, like in Trial by Fire, stunning and captivating. I'm not usually a fan of witch books, but there is something about this series that is so different. Also, parallel worlds! That's definitely an intriguing aspect to mix with magic and witches and royalty.Like in Trial by Fire, I was a fan of Lily! She spends a lot of time injured during this book, which is unfortunate, but she is still strong-willed and resilient. Lily is a good witch who doesn't try to possess the wills of her claimed, or take over their memories or themselves, no matter how much the pull is there. Lily is decisive and smart, and has to make some pretty difficult decisions. The story is a bit slow-paced in the beginning, and it takes a while for me to get back into the story. I think I finally started getting into it when we meet three of Lily's soon-to-be coven. Tristan is one, and Breakfast (Stuart) and Una. I don't remember much of Breakfast and Una in Trial by Fire, if they were in the book at all, but I liked them a lot in this book. Breakfast is quite the jokester!Oh Rowan. I liked him, but I didn't. I mean, I did, but I feel like he did not get nearly enough "screen" time, and his character didn't develop much. He is still as swoony as ever, but Lily is keeping major secrets from him, and she distances herself from him... it's sad to see, because he doesn't get as much attention. Boo! But still, I love him so much, especially as a male protagonist. The story is very engaging, and you won't have difficulty reading it when you get into it (you might not have any issues getting into it at all!). There is a lot of craziness going on, and even if you don't remember much from Trial by Fire, you'll have no issues getting back into the action of things. What I Did Not Like:Urgh. This book is very heartbreaking, pretty much from the start. We know that Lily is keeping things from Rowan (and everyone else), and it's so sad to see her distance herself from him without him having a clue. He knows something is up, but he doesn't want to push her. She should have come clean from the start... but you know, that's how authors f*** with the romance. Even if the female knows, with all of her common sense, that the right thing to do is to tell the male, she never does it.Rowan plays a huge role in this book, and he is present (though not nearly as much as I would have liked). But I feel like in the second half of the book, his presence becomes bittersweet. We know that Lily isn't telling him things, and you get the feeling that he WILL find out, and it won't be pretty. No spoilers but... sigh.I'm pretty irritated with how the author handled all the secrets and Lily not telling Rowan. As you can probably tell. That sets the tone for the rest of the book. There is this dark cloud hanging over the book, and you know something awful is going to happen to Lily and Rowan (the romance), as well as Lily in general. I personally do NOT like reading books like this. I recognize that this is an "Alyssa" problem. But it's not enjoyable for me to be reading a book and feel sick about what's going to happen, or so crushed when it happens, etc. This is likely the biggest reason why this book is getting three stars. There was something missing, as opposed to Trial by Fire. Perhaps the romance isn't as seductive. Perhaps because we get to see a side of Lillian that is unexpected and frightening - in a completely different way than you would think. Perhaps because the ending is a total cliffhanger and the absolute worst kind of ending sequels could deliver. In any case, I'm not too happy about the ending.Would I Recommend It:I LOVED Trial by Fire. That book is definitely a top twenty favorite of 2014. But this book didn't deliver, for me. Still, I'd recommend this series. A fresh, interesting take on witches and parallel worlds? Yes please. But maybe binge-read the series when book three is published.Rating:3 stars. I'll definitely be tuning into book three (too bad there won't be ARCs for book three - the wait will be even LONGER). I can't say I really enjoyed this book (at least, not the second half), but that won't deter me from reading book three!

Rating: 5 - Tony Award Winner By As Dreams Are Made Original Review Link: http://asdreamsaremade.com/2015/08/book-tuesday-arc-firewalker/#more-2637Dead. I died. This book slayed me.Firewalker picks up right where Trial by Fire left off. Lily and Rowan have escaped back to Lily’s Salem after the battle with Lillian. Being back home doesn’t come without its own complications though. New problems force Lily and Rowan to return to Rowan’s Salem with new friends, while Lily delves deeper into her connection with Lillian possibly finding the real reason behind all her evil deeds.Guys. I’m just feeling from this book. I can’t.Ok pull yourself together. Give the review. The beginning half of this book wasn’t my favorite with Lily and Rowan being in Lily’s world. some complications including the FBI and school tend to be annoying, but it’s quickly resolved as the plot moves on. There is some of that “non communication” thing that I abhor……but it ends up being tolerable by the end.Lily and Rowan’s relationship is further developed along with a lot of the secondary characters’ backstories which I loved. I have to say I loved Lillian in this. We learn why she does what she does and it makes you just as conflicted as Lily regarding your feelings toward her. Knowing the motivation makes everything turn upside down. I love that. Angelini makes these characters really diverse and complex in comparison to a lot of YA out there. The plot moves very quickly in this one. Loyalties and motivations are definitely tested, making you constantly question who you can trust and who’s the good or bad guy. The woven are further investigated in this installment with Tristan and Lily trying to observe them and get to the bottom of the issue. And that ending. SLAYED me.In fact, the whole last third of the book just had me on the floor. This was top notch entertainment people. I haven’t felt his way about a book series since The Winner’s Curse. I need the last book like now. 2016, can you come a little faster?

Heartbreaking historical fantasy with science, magic and romance By Nicole @ Nicoles' Novel Reads "Love is being willing to become the villain so that the one you love can stay a hero." - Page 245, ARC of FirewalkerFirewalker, the second installment of The Worldwalker series, picks up right where Trial by Fire left off. Lily Proctor is transported back to her Salem and severely injured along with Rowan. Lily has been missing for three months and everyone is frantic when she returns back home. Her mother has a sense of where Lily went but everyone thinks she is crazy. Even though Lily is transported home, Lily still "meets" with Lillian. Lillian is so desperate to get Lily to return back to the alternate Salem that she will do almost anything to get Lily to world jump. In Firewalker readers will discover more about Lillian's secrets as she shows them to Lily.Angelini does a fantastic job weaving fantasy elements and historical fiction elements to create a magical historical fantasy. Even though it's not true historical fiction, the world building is phenomenal and I feel like I am transported into magical world in the past. The characters are rich and I was sucked into the story right from the beginning of the book. I am glad Angelini didn't add a huge time gap between Trial by Fire and Firewalker. Angelini incorporates some science into Firewalker which I love! Magic is science and witches can transmute energy and matter. It's pretty interesting to read about. Also, what is there not to love about parallel worlds. I find it intriguing to read about Lily's world compared to Lillian's world. It's interesting to see Lily re-adjust to her dimension of Salem and for Rowan to absorb everything in Lily's world. Rowan is a quick learner and is adamant to heal Lily and to make sure Lily's family is okay. I was a bit hesitate when a few characters are willing to become mechanics so fast. I figured they would think about it a bit longer since the idea of witches and mechanics are unheard of in Lily's world. Having a witch claim a willstone is something that is not thought of lightly. And the whole scene with Carrick and everyone willing to world jump in an instant should have been thought out more carefully. It didn't seem realistic that Lily's friends would be willing to sacrifice their own lives for her's and didn't give any thought about their families. The love triangle cannot be avoided but at least it's civil for the most part. There is reason why Lily sways from guy to guy but last half of the book is absolutely heartbreaking.Like in the first book, Firewalker shows ethnic and socio-economic diversity. Although it is not the central focus of the plot, it shapes the plot. There is so much emphasize on friendship and trust in Firewalker. You never know when someone will betray you. I still don't know who to trust at times. Hopefully, my allegiance will be cemented when I read Traitor's Pyre. The third book in the series has such a fitting name! If you are looking for a heartbreaking historical fantasy with science, magic and romance, check out The Worldwalker series.

By Faie I think all married couples, or even those who are not yet married, will agree that sex is really important in a marriage, in a relationship, for that matter. This book is truly a helpful one, if couples will be reading this with an open mind. It has given all the stuff one needs to know on how to maintain the needed sex drive with his spouse in order to have a happier and a more intimate marriage. This is a great read, plus the bonus books will also prove beneficial.

I bought the other one for my older brother and this is for me. I am not married yet but there are things that I want to know. As I expected from it, it has what I had need. Every married couple need intimacy to keep a relationship alive. It bring something different and it make you become closer. I had a several question before why it is needed to a relationship, why should we give importance to it and lots of more. The main book and the bonus reading provides the answer. Great book for a married couple, engage and also for those who are curios on the topic.

Sex is one of those topics that have always been used to evaluate how successful a marriage is. There is probably some truth to this matter but there are so many other things that matter. This book was very objective on the matter. This is what married couples should know. The differences between men and women are profound but it is these differences that make us compatible with each other. A good book recognizes that we should try and know that we think some of these things but never say them. This book presents the fundamentals of marriage and sex in a skillful way.

I even went so far as to pre-order this book before it was released. However, let me warn you, this book fails to live up to her previous books. To put it simply: it is a disappointment. There are some excellent points made in this book, but they are the same as advice that can be found in her previous books. For example this book claims to: "Make strangers like you instantly; Make everyone around you feel special; Give the response that separates social 'winners' from social 'losers.' " Unfortunately, this book falls flat on its face delivering these points when compared to her previous book: Talking the Winner's Way: 92 Little tricks... This book does deliver, but in a more eloquent and applicable manner.Your money and time would be better spent buying or, if you already own, it re-reading her earlier book: Talking the Winner's Way. Best of all, this advice saves you money as this book is out in paperback!

People Magnet is cutting edge material for the 21st Century By Howard Fields As a person, who is involved in a very ethnically, racially, and educationally diverse community, and also happily employed in the human services profession, I read People Magnet, by Leil Lowndes. I read it for both business and personal reasons, as I am, surprisingly, very shy in my personal life. I finished the book less than two weeks ago and have seen immediate improvements in both my personal and business life; from getting along with people who others in my business circle label as "very difficult" - to closer relationships with the important people in my life. Also, this week, I have been able to ask for and be accepted for a date, with a woman, who I have been wanting to get to know better, but was too shy to ask out for almost a year now! In summary, reading this book has been like participating in the best quality personal presentation seminar. However, I've paid hundreds of dollars to attend such seminars and have not achieved the results that I have already achieved after two reads of Ms. Lowndes' book. Of course, it is a book I will reread again over and over.Ms. Lowndes book is different not only in content from the standard conversational improvement books, but the process of reading the book requires active reader participation and the signing of contracts and clauses throughout the book to engender more commitment. The book is written from the heart and speaks to issues of the growing isolation and alienation that are so real in the year 2001. I have read many of the top ranked books on personality improvement, conversation improvement, etc. by many of the best known authors of today and yesterday, but I found Ms. Lowndes book to be most down to earth, while the facts are supported by research, testimonials, and an extensive bibliography. Most important, this book spoke to the heart. I am buying one copy for the office, one for home, one to carry around with me at all times, and an extra copy to give to someone who I think can use it, as I am so impressed by this book.

This book was more than I could have hoped for at a time in my life when I needed friends the most and didn't seem to have any. It gave me the tools I needed to do just that and more. I'm finding it fun to work on "Knights At My Round Table." I'm learning how to develop friendships with all different types of people - people I really like who may not necessarily like each other. Leil shares some very personal experiences in her book - experiences that are only printed words to people who have not gone through them. She talks about the importance of having friends during these times. Friends who do things for you without asking "why or how." Friends who help us live our lives when we have trouble remembering how. I'll never be without friends now after reading this book. It's helped to change my life and see what's most important to me in addition to my immediate family.

Review Praise for the Wereworld series by Curtis Jobling:Rise of the Wolf

“Jobling’s debut initiates a sure-to-be-long series of Wereworld tales, pure fantasy adventure with plenty of horror in the mix…this will find broad appeal among lovers of adventure fantasy, especially those mourning the end of John Flanagan's Ranger’s Apprentice.”—Kirkus Reviews“[A] rousingly gory heroic fantasy…there are plenty of brutal fights for action lovers, and the quest has some stirring moments. Give this series opener to fans of Flanagan’s Ranger’s Apprentice series.”—Booklist“In this thrilling middle-grade debut, first in the Wereworld series, British author/illustrator Jobling (the designer of the Bob the Builder TV series) creates a memorable new setting in which were-creatures rule…a thoroughly enjoyable adventure that makes particularly inventive use of its shape-shifter elements and mythology.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Even reluctant readers should enjoy Wereworld as the first in a new series…as a fantasy world it is superior to Eragon, and pure fun.”—The Times (London)“The nail-biting pace and plot turns will keep the reader wondering exactly how Drew will resolve it all…there is enough romantic heat, girl power, and vulnerable tough guys to guarantee interest from the Twilight crowd.”—BCCB“This first book in the series hits all the bases for a fairy tale with fangs…this will be a popular book, particularly for the young sword and sorcery fan contingent.”—Library Media Connections “Assured and lively enough to captivate with its strong world building and approachable language…will draw followers to the sequel like Drew to a damsel in distress.”—VOYA“Can he write it?  Yes, he can!...a good mix of the traditional pre-industrial society with shape-shifters, and looks like it could be the start of a very fun ride.”—Geek Dad on Wired.comRage of Lions

I would recommend the book for seventh grade and above. I like the vocabulary that he uses. He mixes not commonly used words with common phrases making it more interesting. Instead of using the same words over and over again. I like the sweet innocent love story.

Michel Chikwanine was five years old when he was abducted from his school-yard soccer game in the Democratic Republic of Congo and forced to become a soldier for a brutal rebel militia. Against the odds, Michel managed to escape and find his way back to his family, but he was never the same again. After immigrating to Canada, Michel was encouraged by a teacher to share what happened to him in order to raise awareness about child soldiers around the world, and this book is part of that effort. Told in the first person and presented in a graphic novel format, the gripping story of Michel's experience is moving and unsettling. But the humanity he exhibits in the telling, along with Claudia Dávila's illustrations, which evoke rather than depict the violent elements of the story, makes the book accessible for this age group and, ultimately, reassuring and hopeful. The back matter contains further information, as well as suggestions for ways children can help. This is a perfect resource for engaging youngsters in social studies lessons on global awareness and social justice issues, and would easily spark classroom discussions about conflict, children's rights and even bullying. Michel's actions took enormous courage, but he makes clear that he was and still is an ordinary person, no different from his readers. He believes everyone can do something to make the world a better place, and so he shares what his father told him: ?If you ever think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a room with a mosquito.?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Intense, powerful call to action for kids By Janet Hamilton Summary: Michel Chikwanine had a pretty idyllic childhood with his parents and three sisters in the Democratic Republic of Congo until he was kidnapped one day at the age of five. He and his friends were taken in broad daylight while playing soccer and forced to become soldiers for a rebel army. For two weeks, they were given drugs and taught to shoot, including one nightmarish day when Michel was blindfolded and forced to shoot and kill his best friend, Kevin. Michel managed to escape and make his way back to his family, but it was impossible for him to resume his old life. Eventually, the political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo worsened; Michel’s father was imprisoned and killed; and Michel, his mother, and two of his three sisters made their way to Canada. After a difficult transition, Michel has been able to tell his story and now travels the world inspiring others to make a difference. Grades 6-9.Pros: An incredibly powerful story told in graphic novel form. The page near the end in which Michel sits on the bus listening to his classmates complain about cold pizza, boring classes, and crummy cell phones should give anyone with “First World problems” pause. The last few pages, with more information about Michel, child soldiers, and what kids can do to help will inspire readers to take action.Cons: Read this book before giving it to a child. It’s part of Kids Can Press’s Citizen Kid series of inspiring picture book stories of Third World children, but this one is much darker and more intense than any of the others. There are a couple of pretty disturbing scenes that may not be appropriate for all young readers.

With the assistance of another writer and a talented illustrator, Michel shares his heart-wrenching story with young readers. He tells of being kidnapped at the age of five and being forced to help a rebel militia fight against both the national government and local villagers. He speaks of being forced to shoot a friend and being brainwashed into thinking that his family would never take him back. Thankfully, he never questions his families love for him and he finds the courage to flee when the opportunity comes. But he still has to live with the horrific memories and confusing emotions that he carries home with him and as his father's humanitarian work further endangers the family, he once again finds himself on the run. Eventually, Michel made it to the United States but not with his family intact. What is so admirable is that in learning to cope with the pain he's faced in his life, Michel has learned to speak out and in doing so help others. The story is told beautifully in the illustrations and text giving the reader a glimpse into a topic that should not be ignored. However, while not overly graphic, there is violence and some horrible acts briefly mentioned and because of this the book may not be appropriate for all young readers. I highly recommend this book for more mature middle grade readers on up. A book I will never forget.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A heartbreaking story told for children without fear-mongering or graphic imagery. Well done! By Wayne A McCoy 'Child Soldier: When Boys and Girls Are Used in War' is the true story of Michel Chikwanine. The book is also written by Jessica Dee Humphreys and illustrated beautifully by Claudia Davila.Michel grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo. When he was only 5 years old, he was captured by rebels and forced to become a child soldier. He is forced to do some very bad things before he escapes. The rest of the book talks about his family and their attempts to find a new home because the one they lived in was too dangerous. Since the book is part of the Citizen Kid series, the book concludes with ways to find more information and ways that kids can become active against this sort of issue.I appreciated the way this rather brutal story was told in a way that kids could understand without being graphic. I also appreciate that Michel tells children that the events they are about to read won't suddenly happen to them. The book doesn't attempt to use scare tactics or graphic violence to get it's point across. It's a brutal story, and a horrific and tragic one. That Michel came through this experience and wants to change things is incredible. A wonderfully told and illustrated story. Kudos to everyone.I received a review copy of this ebook from Kids Can Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
