The author Louise Hannah is a black teenage girl growing up in the sixties. A lot of things were going on during the sixties: segregation, integration, even immigration. We were at war with Vietnam, a race-divided nation, and then there was the wrath of her daddy's rules. Louise felt like a prisoner in her own home. She needed to find herself, who she was and what she wanted to be. This is why she felt she had to escape the cruel and unfair demands of her daddy's rules.

In Louise's senior year in high school, she met Jay. He had been to Vietnam and was currently a student at Florida Am University. When Jay went home with Louise to get interrogated, even before he could take Louise on a date, his time in the army and in college was the only thing that got him through the doors. Jay returned home from college for the summer and for Christmas.

Louise found out that Jay was not coming because he had to go to Detroit to help his uncles run their nightclub. Louise was devastated; she was in love with Jay. He seemed to be life. She had gotten Jay's number from his sister and called him. They had a fight on the phone, but they made up.

After his job went on strike and closed down, Jay was at the club all the time, day and night. Jay was still living in Detroit; he traveled back to Miami long enough to make another baby and he was gone again. They had three kids and a rotten marriage. Things got so bad they went their own separate ways. Jay brought his girlfriend whenever he visited Miami to see the kids. Louise met someone while going back to nursing school. Their relationship got very serious .Louise later had a baby daughter for him. Even then Louise and Jay were still fussing and fighting whenever Jay visited the kids. They had a bittersweet love for each other, and no one wanted to say those two words: I'm sorry.

Excerpt from The Present State of Historical Writing in AmericaWhat is the quantity and what the quality of our output of historical monographs? What is upon the average the mental calibre and what the training of those who make them? How do we stand with respect to the publication of histories of a higher order, marked by literary sense or the effort to generalize? How deep or how copious is American thought on the theoretical or philosophical aspects of history? How largely have our historical workers pursued, or appreciated, or been affected by, the advances made in the many other sciences to which history is more or less related? What are the present purposes, nature, and effects of American historical teaching, elementary, secondary, collegiate, or university, which after all represents far more than nine-tenths of the total effort expended on history in this country? In our universities, what is the status of research? How are our historical societies and journals performing their functions? What is the character of those books of history which most hold the public attention - so far as the public attention can be said to be held by any books whatever? What sort or quality of history is presented to the popular mind in the ten-cent magazines and the newspapers, which now constitute almost the sole reading-matter of American mankind? Not one of these questions is easy to answer, yet all must be answered before we can adequately picture to ourselves the present state of historical writing in the United States. It is vain to make any attempt this morning to pursue them all, but it may not be vain to have enumerated them; for if then we perforce narrow the scope of the present paper to a consideration of a manageable portion of the whole field, we shall nevertheless do this with some consciousness of the relation which that portion bears to the whole unmanageable total.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Laurel I have the other two National Geographic mythology books by Donna Jo Napoli, and I had pre-ordered this book and was looking forward to getting it. I like the telling of the myths and the illustrations are vibrant and expressive. What I don't like it how the author judges each of the myths. She doesn't just tell the stories, many of them have little comments from her about how the Aesir are cowardly, or whatever. She clearly has a lot of disdain for this whole collection of tales, I wonder why she even agreed to write this book! I would prefer if she just stuck to the stories and let us draw our own conclusions.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Unpleasant Narration By Dustin Vognild As others have said, the authoress brings a strong bias to her narration. She disparages many of the gods and aspects of the Norse story-telling tradition. The simple fact is: if you appreciate and respect Norse culture and the gods, then find another illustrated collection of the myths. I wanted to repeat what others have said because I personally read the reviews, bought the book anyway, and now wish I had believed them.

22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. bias By D the art is good and the stories are written in a simple easy to read manner, but the author has a strong bias against the gods , she speaks ill of all the gods , but seems to hate THOR, so I would not recommend this book if you practice Asatru as I do.

Graphic novel = readability & appeal By Travis Ann Sherman This book appeared on my desk at the library today; I showed it to a four year old boy who's a big reader this afternoon; he took it from his grandmother and began reading it immediately; they've check it out and taken it home. She had to put a bookmark in it so he would surrender it long enough for the check-out process.I always found fables as being pretty ho hum as a kid although one must say he has held up pretty well for 2500 year old literature. Bright colors and wildly drawn comics breathe new life and humor into the tales. There are a lot of beautifully illustrated versions of the Fables, but I think this will be the one that gets read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fable Comics review By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS reviewer ScottA fable is a short narrative usually encompassing a moral. After Aesop, they also usually contain anthropomorphized animals. But different cultures have different catalogues of stories such as these passed down from generation to generation, mostly by word of mouth. Just recently, fables have become popular again, and Fable Comics takes full advantage of it. Getting a cross section of some of the best in comic artists, Fable Comics lets the artist go crazy providing there is a moral to the story. This leads to some rather eclectic renditions of these classic narratives.Letting the artist go free spins a fresh post-modern twist on classic fables and allows them to let their creativity shine through and some rather unique endings. Twist endings were allowed providing a moral had to be told. These range from the classical interpretation of the tale, to “Artists are Stupid, Art is Dead, Everyone’s a Critic” (some of my all-time favorites). Maris Wicks uses her biology background to elucidate and educate on sea mammals. In “The Dolphin, The Whale and the Sprat,” and James Kochalka pulls out all the traditional stops in “The Fox and the Grapes.” These twists almost seemed necessary to propel the graphic novel forward, but with the traditional morals mixed in, it turned out to be a refreshing mix (although I would have changed a bit of the ordering of the fables).I have to admit, from personal experience, that letting the artist go wild is not necessarily a good thing. Some of the Fables were cute, but contrived; others left you yawning in boredom, wanting to skip ahead to the next one. It’s a good thing fables are generally short. The roster of artists is also in a distinctly American style, cartoonish with few exceptions. This is not a bad thing, however, I would have preferred a more culturally diverse drawing style, but for what the book was trying to convey, it suited me fine. There are a few gems in the lot. Jaime Hernandez does a spectacular job with “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” Roger Langridge handles “”Democles and His Fable” with grace and flair, Shelli Pardline gracefully pens “The Thief and the Watchdog,” and George O’Conner renders in a prince Valiant type manner, the various “Hermes” tales. My personal favorite was R. Sikoryak’s Krazy Kat rendition of “The Lion and the Mouse.” It really spoke in the words and depictions of the famous George Harriman cartoon strip. Skillfully rendered in Harriman’s style, the moral at the end left me giggling inanely for minutes, at passing gags, and the stereotypical morphing backgrounds that Krazy Kat was noted for.If you are a fan of Aesop you will not want to miss this collection. Fable Comics has something for everyone, and the diverse art will defiantly have you lustering after any new artists you come across (or already know, there are a few New York Times artists here). With it’s easy to read format, hopefully you will learn yourself a moral or two.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Courtesy of Mother Daughter Book Club. com By Cynthia Hudson Fables are an age-old way to get a moral across through telling a story. We all know about how the lazy hare tanks in a “can’t-lose race” with a tortoise by being overconfident and neglecting to do the work to win. We may also have learned the lesson about not “crying wolf,” or telling a lie to get attention because people may not believe us when we tell the truth. Prominent graphic artists bring these tales and others to life in Fable Comics, a collection edited by Chris Duffy. Most, though not all, of the stories are based on fables from Aesop. A note in the back of the book defines a fable as “a story with a lesson, usually—not always—starring animals.” The oldest fables may come from many authors and many sources, but some of the more modern ones come from people who are well known, like the Russian satirist Ivan Krilof or the American author Ambrose Bierce. This collection is accessible for kids as young as six, and should be fun for the whole family. Each tale is reimagined by the artists with both words and graphics, and the origin of the fable is labeled. Because different artists illustrate each fable, many styles and color schemes appear in the book. It could be fun to compare them, and to look for other titles by the artists. It could also be interesting for family members to talk about which styles they like best and why.The publisher provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

In this concise introduction, Chad Kautzer demonstrates the shared emancipatory goals and methods of several radical philosophies, from Marxism and feminism to critical race and queer theory. Radical Philosophy examines the relations of theory and practice, knowledge and power, as well as the function of law in creating extralegal forms of domination. Through a critical engagement with the history of philosophy, Kautzer reconstructs important counter-traditions of historical, dialectical, and reflexive forms of critique relevant to contemporary social struggles. The result is an innovative, systematic guide to radical theory and critical resistance.

Radical Philosophy: An Introduction, by Chad Kautzer

Review

"I recommend this book in three respects: as an introductory text for philosophy undergraduates; as an example of self-critique for continental philosophers; and as a window into what may be a different tradition altogether for sundry radical philosophers, as well as mainstream heirs of Thales."― Naomi Zack, Radical Philosophy Review

"Kautzer’s two-pronged thesis about the impetus for and basic purpose of radical philosophy is appealing, even energizing."― Sarah Drews Lucas, Contemporary Political Theory

"Turn the university upside down! Turn philosophy upside down. Think against the world of destruction and oppression and cultivate resistance. This book is a terrific place to start, just what we need."― John Holloway, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico, author of Change the World without Taking Power and Crack Capitalism

"Radical Philosophy: An Introduction constitutes a major scholarly contribution without rival. The analysis of domination through the lenses of race, class, gender, and sexuality in the context of a rich historical engagement is a hallmark of Kautzer’s scholarship. The book concludes with a novel conception of the function of whiteness in extra-legal structures of racism. The elegant style renders the book highly readable, which is an important benefit of a text that has much to offer scholars, students, and activists."― Cynthia Willett, Emory University, author of Interspecies Ethics and Irony in the Age of Empire

"Ever since Socrates, philosophy has been a dangerous endeavor, but it loses its critical edge if practiced only as an academic exercise. Chad Kautzer renews philosophy’s original stance by making a forceful case for an interventionist thinking informed by contemporary social struggles. This book is an indispensable tool for all who want not only to interpret the world but to change it."― Daniel Loick, Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main, author of The Critique of Sovereignty (Kritik der Souveränität)

"Although some may see in 'radical philosophy' an incongruous juxtaposition of terms, Kautzer demonstrates that philosophical practice need not be a detached and contemplative exercise... this accessible book is useful as an introduction to radical political philosophy. Summing Up: Recommended."― J. A. Gauthier, University of Portland, CHOICE Reviews

About the Author

Chad Kautzer is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Social Justice Minor at the University of Colorado Denver. He is co-editor, with Eduardo Mendieta, of Pragmatism, Nation, and Race: Community in the Age of Empire (Indiana University Press, 2009).

This is the rarest kind of philosophy book By Evan Moskowitz If you have any kind of background in philosophy or critical/social theory, you might be tempted to skip over a book with "introduction" in its title. I can't stress enough what a mistake that would be. Whatever your pre-existing grasp of the material might be, it will be stronger by the time you've finished this book-- probably by the time you've finished its introduction. "Radical" is one of those words that many of us, myself included, tend to throw around a lot without always thinking much about what it really means. In language that is at once clear and technically precise, Kautzer lays out a historically and theoretically grounded picture of radical philosophy whose central concern is *always* the question of practical, real-world implications. If you are interested or getting interested in contemporary social justice and don't have much of a philosophy background, this is a perfect place to start. There is technical language, but terms are used clearly, consistently, and responsibly, which makes it a great way to encounter new words and concepts that are important to know. This is the rarest kind of philosophy book: A philosophy book to recommend to friends and family.

This is a great intro to Radical Philosophy By baimudan This is a great intro to Radical Philosophy; it's an updated philosophy textbook with great background on Marxism and class, feminism and queer theory as well as anti-racism and whiteness. The readings are thoughtful reflections for anyone who wants to understand oppression and how to work towards justice in our time. It's not too long, but it touches on so many rich topics that invite further reading. This is one of those books where the footnotes and bibliography are just as interesting as the text itself.

By Terese Howard If you believe that philosophy is not something "experts" do in an office, and that political action is not something that only happens when marching - than you must read this book. Otherwise put, if you want to look deeply at the struggles we fight (i.e. cops killing people of color, environmental destruction, mass homelessness and the criminalization of homelessness...), the structures, the history, and think as you fight...this is the book for you.

We've listened to the cd for over a year now and my 6 and 7 year olds still love it. The book is also amazing. So so fun!! I thought my kids might be aging out of pop up books but they have read it 20 times in the day that we've had it and my son took it for his share day at kindergarten this morning. Thank you for such a happy book!!

She loves them! She also loves the book! We have several of David Carters pop-up books, but this one is more colorful and produced more giggles with each pop-up movement. Nice illustrations and a fun song to play while we look at the book.
