A sparkling cocktail of surf, sand and self-discovery By Kermit First-time novelist Yvonne Reich’s “Miss Mojito” offers a charming and engaging personal voyage into self-discovery as experienced by her heroine and an elusive but ever-present Rasta, who serves as her guide and conscience. On the surface, the novel is an effervescent exploration of a 40-something woman’s journey through the heights and depths of her day-to-day pleasures and disappointments. A timely inheritance launches her great adventure in the sunny climes of surf, sand and endless frothy libations. Armed with a growing self-awareness and a bewitching spiritual guide to watch her back and nudge her forward when necessary, she forges a path to new horizons of joy, peace and the validation of what she had always suspected: that life provides glorious opportunities for self-affirmation and celebration – with a few hangovers en route.Translated from the original German with a sure hand and eye, the book, fresh from its German debut, is a frothy blend of self-help and pure entertainment.

Happy beach feeling with Miss Mojito By Aesta Yvonne has reached the magic age of forty and, to her dismay, has realized that nothing in her life is "just right" or even remotely suitable. Her job as an attorney at an Insurance company frays her nerves and makes her miserable and in her personal relationships, too, she encounters one disappointment after another. How she gets out of this mess and creates her ideal life is really funny to read.A book full of inspiration, a firework of ideas…I could not stop reading!

"A Must Read Romance. This is one of the best books I've read this year. It has everything a book should have: action, adventure, violence, a butt-kicking heroine and one hot hero." ―USA Today

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies make it increasingly difficult to live a normal life, and after a completely humiliating incident ruins her first (and perhaps only) real party, she's ready to disappear.

Suddenly, Lily finds herself in a different Salem. One overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women―including Lillian, this world's version of Lily.

What made Lily weak at home, makes her extraordinary here. It also puts her in terrible danger. Faced with new responsibilities she can barely understand and a love she never expected, Lily is left with one question: How can she be the savior of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy?

Set in a world of witches, magic, and romance, Trial by Fire by internationally bestselling author Josephine Angelini is the first book of the young adult fantasy Worldwalker Trilogy.

“Angelini's latest series opener combines the best elements of a magical fantasy with hints of sci-fi, history, and romance.” -School Library Journal

“A compelling, intricate world, a swoony romance, and a memorable cast make this one a blazing success.” -The Bulletin

“A Must Read Romance. This is one of the best books I've read this year. It has everything a book should have: action, adventure, violence, a butt-kicking heroine and one hot hero.” ―USA Today, Happily Ever After

“Angelini creates an escapist fantasy infused with magic and romance, while taking up themes of science gone wrong and humans' endangerment of the world and their environment. The ways in which the two worlds mirror one another provide emotional resonance and fascinating possibilities for subsequent books in the Worldwalker trilogy.” ―Publishers Weekly

“The likable Lily is guided by strong convictions, and a startling conclusion will have readers anticipating the next chapter in the Worldwalker trilogy.” ―Booklist

“Readers will be swept into the inner workings of crucibles and witches and left eager for more . . . a richly drawn world of keenly devised magic.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Angelini's latest series opener combines the best elements of a magical fantasy with hints of sci-fi, history, and romance.” ―School Library Journal

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Witches like you have never seen them before! By Michelle@Book Briefs Trial by Fire is a book filled with so many awesome elements. Not only are the characters fantastic, but the plot is original and the concept is thought provoking and utterly cool! It reminded me on an episode of the Big Bang theory where Sheldon is talking about an infinite number of universes and an Infinite number of different Sheldons. That is the world you get introduced to in Trial by Fire. Lily Proctor is in our world, and then she isn’t. She is taken to a different world where a bunch of people are familiar to her, but everything else is so very different. Magic exists and witches rule. But that is only the beginning. Josephine Angelini does an incredible job of blending science with magic. These are witches, or crucibles as they are called, like I have never seen them before. I love that their magic stems from converting elements and substances that they take in from their surroundings. The book starts out in our world, but Lily quickly leaves and the rest of the novel takes place in Lillian’s world. Some of the characters up front confused me. I have no idea why Lily had a crush on her world’s Tristan. I know they were best friends, but I didn’t even get the vibe that he was a very good friend. He just seemed like a royal jerk. And the other character that confused me was Lillian. I know she is painted to be this power hungry killing machine, big bad villain. I do get why people would think that, she was hanging everyone in sight. But from her passages and her interactions with Lily, I just didn’t get a completely evil vibe from her. I know she is holding back a lot of information, and a small part of me wants it to be a great justification so I don’t have to dislike her. Because I don’t hate her yet. I can’t wait to find out more about her character in the next book. I just have a feeling it is going to be something good. But I will hate her in a second if she tries to encroach on Rowan! (just sayin’)I got really into the story. All of it. I loved the willstones, and I was just as fascinated by the whole relationship between magic and science as she was. I liked Rowan so much, but I don’t blame Lily for being confused by him. He didn’t give her too much to go on. I wanted to get inside his head a little more. But really, the whole cast of characters was great. There is so much action and detail going on in this story that you will never be bored. Trial by Fire is one of those books, where you get mad at the world for sending real life interruptions to your reading. I didn’t want to put it down. The cliffhanger at the end of this one left me cursing the fact that I have to wait so long for the next book. I am on the edge of my seat with this one. There are so many things that Josephine Angelini can do with the next book, and I can’t wait to see what direction she takes the story in. I have tons of questions that I can’t wait to delve into when the world walking really comes into play. This is a great one for fans of paranormal and witches. Trial by Fire is a riveting read that is delightfully original.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing. By Ari Terrible. Completely terrible for a number of reasons.I actually really liked the Starcrossed series. I thought Helen and Lucas were engaging, and had good chemistry. Lily and Rowan- not so much. Lily was terrible, for starters. When I read the book, I kept wanting her to be a Kaitlyn Fairchild type character (old school L.J. Smith character from Dark Visions trilogy), but instead she was Meghan Chase from Iron fey. Whiny, annoying and missing the obvious everywhere she went. Rowan wasn't as bad, but that was only because he was bland. There wasn't really much to him. A major thing that bothered me was the interaction between them. They would be having a slight disagreeing (mostly because Lily was annoying and pretentious. The whole "I'm vegan and yes that means I'm better than you" was ridiculous) and suddenly, with very little escalation, one of them would suddenly start screaming at each other. Overreaction, maybe? The plot was obvious. Halfway through I knew exactly how it was going to end. Surprise surprise, I was right.Also- can we move away from the 'hot-guy best friend finally noticed me only for him to then be discovered in a compromising situation with heartless slut and leads me to make poor, life-altering decisions with disastrous consequences' plotline? It's a little played out.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Lily Proctor was pretty much allergic to everything By xfryx Ooof. This was one of my more highly anticipated books of the season. I actually surprise won a copy over Twitter from the publisher. I thrummed with excitement waiting for it to arrive and it arrived on the last day of GISHWHES week. I couldn’t read it yet! It was crunch time! By the time I picked it up the next day, I was dying from excitement. And yes! The first few chapters were really interesting. Lily Proctor was pretty much allergic to everything, moving towards an early death or life in a bubble. Her long time friend Tristan is making moves on her but is quite the user of girls. Yeah, there’s some magnificently douchebag moments from him. She finds him in the bathroom balls deep in another girl when she’s on a date with him. This spurs her pity party and world jump.Finding herself in a new Salem, she meets her other self, Lillian. Lillian is the reigning power in this new Salem, her word is law and her law has outlawed SCIENCE.Why? Well, magic would be just another tool if science was allowed to continue! So it’s time to hang all the scientists! Cue rebels! Science rebels! Okay, they’re only recently more science filled. Really, they’re just people who weren’t citizens of the cities who lived outside the walls. The cities have walls because there’s some fun hybrid critters who swoop in and eat people periodically. So, really, your choices are follow the rules or live outside the walls with murderbeasts.A section of the rebels eventually befriend Lily, this includes Lillian’s ex-lover and former primary mechanic, Rowan and this world’s version of Tristan. While Lily had some Tristan feels to overcome, they were nothing in comparison to what Rowan had to get over to trust Lily. Such tragedy, very back story!Lillian’s Salem uses something called willstones in order to direct magical energy. Turns out Lily has a fount of it and an uncanny ability to channel new energy where she needs it to go. She goes from being pretty much useless, to being one of the more powerful witches in this world. Too bad all she really wants is to go home. Even as she starts to fall in love, home is at the forefront of her mind. The book ends on a cliffhanger, one that unfortunately makes me curious for the next book even though there were some intense character flaws that annoyed me.What sort, you say? Well, Lily is a vegan. That in and of itself is -not- a character flaw. It’s her insistent need to remind everyone of the fact every chance she gets. Even though the meat in this new Salem is grown in a similar fashion from the leather hides she feels comfortable wearing (seriously, any animal product is still an animal product), she refuses to eat the meat. At one point, she eats an entire jar of pickles! That is not how you healthy vegan! It got to the point where I just wanted to kick her every time she said it. It was awkwardly thrown in our faces to show her spirited will and her willingness to stick to her guns. These things are also not bad, the execution just nagged at me.Yeah, that pretty much ruined the book for me. When you can’t get behind the main character, the secondary characters usually pick up the slack (think Harry Potter). Unfortunately, this book doesn’t let that happen. All characters are pretty much interchangeable. There are a few that stand out, but not exceptionally.I expected more from it, perhaps it was the high bar I set that soured it? Or maybe it was just that sour.

Harrington Hall at Beaumont University might have been any other women's residence hall at an institution of higher learning. The women who lived in Harrington Hall might have been any other coeds at a prominent university-and most of them did follow the typical pattern, attending classes, gathering at social functions, making new friends, and relishing the freedom of living away from home. For others, however, the college experience was not at all what they anticipated it would be. Heather falls in love, gets pregnant, and marries her soul mate . . . but she later learns a secret that sends her life into a tailspin. Song Kim seems painfully shy but is hiding a dark secret of her own. Karen, desperate to find a way to earn money for tuition, agrees to become part of an exclusive escort service and then realizes she's committed to more than she'd bargained for. And Cathy, beautiful and virtuous, gets involved with a boy who has a reputation for using women, leading to a tragedy she never could have imagined. J. Alec Keaton's The Women of Harrington Hall is filled with happiness and heartache, poignancy and punch. Harrington Hall's women, genuine and true, are seemingly ordinary college coeds-you might say, "I knew someone like that"-but the twists and turns in each woman's journey are anything but ordinary. And the telling of their tale will keep you riveted and wanting more.

As I got to know each of the characters, the book was hard to put down, needing to know what came next. With twists and turns in every angle, the ending was very satisfying. I thought this book was better than "Girl On The Train".

The modern day-setting brought the characters alive and you rooted for them through-out the book. I agree with the other reviews that once you started reading you didn't want to put the book down.

The New York Times bestselling and National Book Award winning In the Heart of the Sea, soon to be a major motion picture directed by Ron Howard, adapted by the author for young readers. On November 20, 1820, the whaleship Essex was rammed and sunk by an angry whale.  Within minutes, the twenty-one-man crew, including the fourteen-year-old cabin boy Thomas Nickerson, found themselves stranded in three leaky boats in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with barely any supplies and little hope.  Three months later, two of the boats were rescued 4,500 miles away, off the coast of South America.  Of the twenty-one castaways, only eight survived, including young Thomas.  Based on his New York Times best-seller In the Heart of the Sea, Nathaniel Philbrick recreates the amazing events of the ill-fated Essex through the sailors own first-hand accounts, photos, maps, and artwork, and tells the tale of one of the great true-life adventure stories."Horrifyingly engrossing." —Kirkus Reviews"A compelling saga of desperation and survival." —School Library Journal

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very captivating read for a history book By Kevin RK Davis Knowing that most books I read, I put down before finishing, this book was the best FREE book I ever came across. It was the product of a trade in of a well known BUY, SELL, TRADE Entertainment store. It was a catalyst for me to read more Philbrick. I'm already a history buff (usually via documentaries or internet-browsing), but I find Philbrick's writing very good... "Like you're there," which is the hope of most writers, yes? Unlike text-book dabbling I've done as well, Philbrick does a good job, especially in this book, of getting you into 1820s New England whaling, in Philbrick's hometown Nantucket. What I also like about Philbrick's writing, is that he usually answered my questions when something he said would spark curiosity for the reader. In other words, when you're following the action, Philbrick might mention the Azores, and the reader might wonder, "Is the Essex the only boat that stopped there? Was the Azores used a lot in the whaling industry?" And Philbrick at this point would usually deviate from the chronological action and fill the reader in on the Azores and its history in whaling industry. Philbrick did this often with different anecdotes.A quick look through his ending notes section, lets you know that Philbrick did thorough research, and a read through his book lets you know that it paid off! I'm glad to say that this is going to be one of the books I've read BEFORE the movie!Pros +ExcitingInformativeThrillerThoroughCons +I couldn't read it all at one sitting - THAT'S OKAY THOUGH. I like the feeling of "We're going to be here for awhile."

I am now on page 45 at a paragraph that she asks the reader to read and re-read, for reasons that are obvious given the weight of those words and the mysticism within them. My feeling toward this book is one of excitement and gratitude because what's written is information I believe I've needed to progress with my faith journey AND of course the journey with the voice, those 2 being profoundly connected/essentially the same. I cannot wait to find what else is discussed and revealed within this book but I am also VERY aware that its NOT a marathon read AT ALL. Its something to be approached in a slow, deliberate, consistent manner which is exactly how I plan to proceed!

By Tatiana Palma I am extremely well read in spiritual literature, but this is the first book that piereced my heart with truth and understanding of the simplicity of the secret of the voice and of life. Simple and yet profound as everything that God makes. The book gave me more than understanding. As I'm reading it over and over, this book imparts the knowledge on me, it reconnects me to my original God given blueprint and frees up the true me and my true voice, connecting me to the incredible potential of God's design and plan for my life. If there were more than 5 stars, it would have gotten them all!

By robert I speak all over the world and Miriam has truly saved my voice! Now when I do a 3 day seminar I 'm not tired anymore. I have people coming up to me and asking how I keep my voice after speaking non stop for days! It's a miracle, it's amazing and anyone who speaks or sings should read this!

About the Author

“Douglas Reeves has taken on one of the most controversial subjects in education today—grading. He looks for common ground while advocating for standards-based grading and presents a researched-based case for how educators can utilize grading practices that lead to higher levels of student learning. This book is filled with practical solutions to a vexing problem and should be required reading for educators and policymakers alike.”

—Richard DuFour, Educational Author and Consultant

“In Elements of Grading: A Guide to Effective Practice (2nd edition), Dr. Reeves uses the most powerful research to date to share the critical elements an educator needs to improve student performance. He offers evidence; practical, real-life examples; and proven effective tools and strategies for improving successful grading practices and policies. Dr. Reeves provides a clear path to success and positive student outcomes and openly invites grading skeptics to take a closer look.”

—Linda A. Gregg, Ed.D., CEO, American Teachers Academy

“This book presents practical, research-based ways to make grading more fair, accurate, specific, and timely. Every teacher and school administrator needs this book. It offers excellent, real-life examples and a compelling argument for change. Implementing Reeves' suggestions could enhance not only grading practices but also student learning.”

—Barbara Walvoord, Professor Emerita, University of Notre Dame

“Dr. Reeves’s passion for making grading systems more effective is contagious and motivates change leaders, teachers, and administrators to do right by students. This valuable resource offers tools and strategies for narrowing what Reeves calls ‘a wide gulf’ between implementing standards and using standards-based grading, approaching the grading debate, and much more.”

—Lisa Almeida, Author and Associate, Creative Leadership Solutions

By Claudia Wheatley Doug Reeves has once again written a concise, common sense reference for all of us who are considering or who are in the throes of changing our grading practices. Unlike some authors who make it so difficult that neither faculty, students nor the parents can understand the new policies, Reeves has made it comprehensible for all. He also allows us to keep some practices that many of our communities hold dear while still creating fair grading policies that can motivate students. While it is an easy read, this bookis also formatted to serve as a great reference. Whether you are focused on Common Core or on the value of feedback and student voice, Reeves gives you research-based yet practical strategies that we all can implement.
