This story is autobiographical related against a backdrop of historical events in America and elsewhere in the world. It begins in Boston during the years of the Great Depression and the prelude to World War Two. It transports readers to distant places here and abroad ending in the political turmoil of the early 21st century. The narrative has a number of themes the most salient is "taking a stand" against violence, prejudice, and bigotry. Others entail the author's dissent against the continual deterioration of academic standards and integrity which he witnesses throughout his career as an educator and which stokes his disillusionment with academia. Highlighted in closing chapters are the corruption and electorate distrust of our political leaders, the ideological divide, and a call for the restoration of our republic: a government more representative and responsive to the electorate. The author is a retired university professor of sociology. After completing his college education at American University in Washington, D.C. he served in the U.S. Army of Occupation in Germany during the Korean War. Following his military service, he went on to pursue a PhD degree in Sociology at the University of Chicago. During that time he worked at the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census where he was involved in research on population migration and the War on Poverty. In 1968 he returned to Chicago where he finally earned his PhD degree and embarked on a teaching career and later earned a black belt in Shotokan karate. He has a number of academic publications one of which appeared in Demography the official journal of the Population Association of America and has served as an editorial consultant for Demography. Also, he has presented research papers at academic professional meetings including one at an annual meeting of the Population Association of America in Montreal, Canada.

By ron toles This autobiography is an easy read about a man who lived a disciplined life and lived it well. Like most of us he had several set-backs in life, but he overcame them because he was determined not to allow himself to be a victim of bigotry and political correctness. His PHD in Sociology from the prestigious University of Chicago is evidence of the author's intelligence and of what one can accomplish if one is determined enough. The author clearly describes just how difficult it can be for a tenured professor to maintain high academic standards when an administration seems to have different priorities. This book is a must read for those who are concerned about the deterioration of academic standards at the college and university levels due to political correctness.

An insightful historical perspective on 20th century America By Gretchen Oh Having had a ringside seat at the academic circus, from my years as a graduate student in the 1960s until my professor husband's retirement in 2005, I am familiar with the experience Dr. Baer has described with such accuracy, insight and outrage. I have seen the declining quality of the use of the English language since the early 1900s sadly reflected in the term papers and exam answers of graduate students today, even for those who are native English speakers, and have observed that it parallels the decline in the educational level in general. Today's "A" paper would not have earned that high a grade 100 years ago, but today's professors and teachers, grading on a curve, are still expected to award A's. Dr. Baer's distress over this phenomenon has been very clearly expressed in his book, and for those who have spent their adult years in the halls of ivy, this book will hit a resounding note.As the story of a young Jewish American man making his way through life in the United States beginning in the early 1900s, Dr. Baer's autobiography also sheds an interesting perspective on what it was like to live through a number of fascinating eras and historical events in the history of America and the western world. Having lived through most of them myself, and I enjoyed the refresher course.

Not only did I get a great history lesson from World War I to present day,. also I learned of the personal history of the author. He was so clever in describing what was happening in his own life , the death of his sister, his challenges with academia and prejudice and his war experiences. I appreciated the way he described his personal life in context of what was happening in the world and then to top it off he added quotes from leaders of the day or literature quotes that reflected the thinking of the day. I loved this book....so thought provoking and filled with voice.

I'm trying to get my friends to read it, and pretty much everyone I know! lol What I like most about this book, is that the author does so well balancing out all the serious parts and the hilarious ones. Starting with the cover By Amazon Customer I received a copy of this book as a Christmas gift and I love it! Starting with the cover, it's beautiful and satiny -I love running my hands over it! It's a full size book with plenty of room for writing our story. Each entry has a fun quote and the prompts lead into telling the fun stuff -how we met, nicknames, favorite activities- and getting into depth as well -our challenges, what am I learning, how do I know this is something special- It's a well rounded record of memories with open space for photos and mementos as well. Fun, yes, but also a tool for exploration. I've never seen a book quite like this one! I'll be ordering one for my parents and now I have a great go-to gift for bridal showers!

When Beatrix ‘Trix’ Daley loses her twin brother Bo in a tragic accident, she inadvertently gains his best friend, Penn, whether she wants him or not. Penn is the exact opposite of her brother. Obnoxious. Cocky. And out to sleep with as many women as possible. But he knows. He gets it. Because he lost Bo, too. Penn’s been going out of his way to piss off Trix since he was six. Twenty years later, and getting under her skin is still his favorite pastime. And Bo’s still the only thing that keeps them tied together. Even if he has been dead for eight years. For better or worse, Trix and Penn have been the constant in each other’s lives, and the line between love and hate continues to blur at a steady rate…but Trix is the last girl on earth a guy like Penn should fall for. So there’s no telling which side of love and hate they’ll wind up on when all is said and done. And whether they’ll wind up there, still together...or not.

Colora I'm glad I had a few days to think about this review and didn't post it directly after reading the book because I was seriously P’d off.I realized that I had to judge the book based on the content not my reaction to the ending so here goes. The writing is excellent. The editing and flow of the story is great, the character draw you in and you take the journey with them as their relationship develops, this books is absolutely great until the epilogue some people will read it and think it was a great twist for me I was just angry but that has to do with the fact that I like very clear cut happily ever aftersThis book is worth the read I would suggests not reading the epilogue.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bravo!! By DawnD After reading, Last Girl, I thought, how can I possibly convey how beautifully unique this story is without coming across as cliche’ or using other people’s language?K.S. Thomas created poetry within her writing. Her use of imagery and metaphors caused me to pause for a moment of reflection. Almost all of the dialogue between the characters had clever sayings, maybe similes, too, if I remember the definition from H.S English class, that had me chuckling and praising her wit in my mind. So, now, I will attempt to be sort of, kind of, poetic when I compare the author’s writing in this book to a Vahz, yes, I’m talking about a vase, so bare with my quirkiness for a sec. lol Like a Vahz, the story was gracefully handcrafted and artfully presented, showing meticulous attention to detail. Penn and Beatrix "Trix”are beautifully flawed just like the cracks in an antique china doll, but unlike the doll, their cracks run far beneath the surface.“All I ever wanted was to be there to take care of you after you caught whatever was coming your way, so you can go back and catch more.”~PennA moment of silence…sigh..‘Last Girl’ shows how one can become entrapped in heartache and pain, and seemingly think that there is no way out. How a heart can sink to the very depths of the ocean without a glimmer of light. I was introduced to a whole new perspective of love and loss, with the underlying message that every heart can heal. In time, there comes a transformative moment in one’s life that allows that person to free themselves from the prison they punished themselves in.Okay, just one itty bitty cliché’. Expect the unexpected. Seriously, this book is no joke. ;) The epilogue showcases the writer’s obvious talent.I give, Last Girl, 5 stars written on a fogged up bathroom mirror. '

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Stock The Tissues By MichelleLP This is the story of Trix and Penn eight years after the loss of Trix’s twin brother, and Penn’s best friend, Bo. Bo was the fulcrum of their Love/ Hate relationship in life and and is the lynch pin of their relationship in death. In the beginning it is easy to see that their relationship is not healthy. It seems obvious that they should have gone their own way many years before and at the death of Bo should not have been enough to keep these two in any kind of relationship. Turns out that is true, Bo isn’t the reason. Each is in love with the other and must come to terms with it in his and her own way.The book is roller coaster of emotions for both the characters and the reader. This book is fantastically written and I want to be clear about that, because I spent most of the book thinking that the story just seemed too forced, something just didn’t ring true about it. The relationship, with its wide mood swings just seemed too unbalanced to work.I did eventually warm up to the love story and just when I was feeling comfortable with the everything-is going-to work-out conclusion that seemed to be coming as the end of the book loomed, I got kicked in teeth with one emotional twist after another. The ending had me spitting mad and realizing that it all suddenly made sense. I am not a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks style tearjerkers, but I am aware that they are wildly popular with a huge portion of fiction readers, so I am sure this particular book, though not my cup of tea, is destined for success.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

As America exploded into the swinging sixties, nine-year-old Mary Patricia's parents fled their old melting pot neighborhood to join the upwardly mobile members of the cocktail generation. Abandoned at seventeen when her family moves yet again, Mary Patricia is left to ride out a tsunami of struggle, including lying about her age in order to land a job working for the Chicago Mafia. Gut instinct tells her that she is in imminent danger and she escapes, to the counterculture of Southern California in the early 1970s and then a jubilant Bicentennial Manhattan. Her tenacious pursuit of a college degree takes her north to Vermont, where she hopes for a stable life when she marries and has three sons. It’s a Pyrrhic victory as she confronts a string of calamities, including divorce, catastrophic illness and her parents' deaths after 9/11. Rising from the ashes, she and her husband reunite and Mary Patricia finally gets what she so richly deserves: The time of her life. “Spanning fifty years, Fading Past is by turns funny, poignant, and heart-rending—a tale of two centuries as eloquent as it is finely wrought.” Bestselling author James M. Tabor author of The Deep Zone and Forever on the Mountain. “Mary Kathleen Mehuron’s honest, memoir-like novel, Fading Past, tells the epic story of Mary Patricia Toohey, whose story bridges a half century of American history. It’s a clear-eyed yet kind-hearted examination of friendship, family ties, marriage, and courage, by a serious and thoughtful writer who knows whereof she speaks.” Howard Frank Mosher, award winning and bestselling author of A Stranger in the Kingdom and Where the Rivers Flow North. “Mehuron’s debut contains all of the elements that readers’ of women’s fiction look for - family entanglements, loves gained and lost, the search to recapture youth, and the rewards and forfeits of friendship." Nanci Milone-Hill author of Reading Women: A Book Club Guide for Women’s Fiction. “I couldn’t put it down. I read for hours, and when I finished, I wandered around for a while, still living with Mary Patricia and her family. . . so well written and a truly interesting story. Reeve Lindbergh author of Under a Wing and Forward From Here: Leaving Middle Age and Other Unexpected Adventures.

Overcoming Life's Obstacles By Janet Hubbard Mehuron describes in her fictional biography that one suspects contains a great deal of truth about what it was like to grow up in a multi-cultural community in New Jersey in the 1950s and 60s. Her family was second-generation Irish, and her parents were a part of the upward mobility culture. Her father was a Willy Loman-type character, exceptionally smart and ambitious, and rarely admitting defeat. He had a narcissistic and fragile wife and five children to support, which was daunting. The young Mehuron, who was too often put in the role of mother to the younger children, had inherited her father's determination to prove herself. At seventeen her parents abandoned her, and soon after her wealthy boyfriend did, too. In a way this is the classic story of the "American dream," where the belief is strong that with hard work and determination one can achieve success. And like her ancestors, Mehuron has a gift for storytelling as she writes about how she went about achieving her dream of a college degree, the surest path to success. The reader has high hopes for her as she earns her degree, moves to Vermont, marries well, and has children. But the worst is yet to me as she divorces, then learns she has breast cancer, and while undergoing treatment, is told that her father has died suddenly, followed by her mother a few weeks later. With learned fortitude, Mehuron forges a new life with her ex-husband. In the writing of this book she conveys through humor and story that we are in the constant process of creating ourselves, and our lives. "Fading Past" is a great read! (Full Disclosure: I edited the first version of this book.)

This semi-autobiographical novel reminds us why the only constant in life is change. My favorite parts can be told in two words: Chicago Mob.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. but instead loved children, growing up in sane families By katja v Mary Kathleen Mehuron has written an intriguing novel based mostly on her own, quite dramatic life. It reveals how important our childhood is and what is the meaning of a stable family, or the lack of it and how loves, friends, and children make our lives meaningful. If I could, I would force parenthood test for people wanting kids. The result would be not an overpopulated earth, but instead loved children, growing up in sane families. Anyway..The atmosphere, and places are well built, the writers own path, and the as well as interaction of friends, make an interesting and a moving story. An impressive tale of how she has survived immense obstacles, nourished herself with self-expression, living life to the fullest, not always by choice, but enriching her experience into becoming a deeply mature person. It shows us how old imagery of our loved ones can stop the communication, and finding peace with each other gives meaning to life. The difficulties and pains of the cancer phase are an overwhelming read. What a life!

Loving our children isn't always about hedonic pleasures or comforts. Most of the time, it is about maximizing their learning, creativity, playfulness, relationships, athleticism, FUN, interconnectedness, sense of adventure, decision making, cheerfulness, and joy -- all things that grow so much more away from the screen. I strongly recommend screen free zones in the house. This book is a great reminder that our brains, relationships, and our bodies hunger for something beyond a screen. Great messages in this book! I love the message that tough choices parents make is ultimately out of LOVE. As a psychologist, I highly recommend this book for families from toddlers to children to tweens to teenagers and parents alike. Great message for all!

Toney This book is such a fun read and a good reminder for all ages that unplugging is good for our brains AND our family relationships. I love the message that sometimes kids might not like parents making tough choices for them, but ultimately parents do it out of love.We have 4 kids ages 3-13 and this message is great for all of them.

My three daughters love reading this clever book night after night. The author does a masterful job explaining the importance of breaking away from the "cord" to enjoy spending time with family and friends!
