Review I remember the panic that gripped me my senior year of college when I realized I had to find a job that would start my adult life. The complexities of the modern economy have made that search even more frightening, but Chris Palmer’s Now What, Grad? is a wonderful confidence booster. The book takes readers by the hand and guides them step-by-step through the most difficult parts of that transition. I love the emphasis on thinking first about what you really want and identifying those happy parts of your life that already hold clues to what you should be doing. Get out a note pad as you read the book and by the end you will have a to-do list that will get you up every morning, ready to move forward. Using the techniques he teaches, I landed a full time position teaching Television Production at a local college more than a year before I earned my MFA and I’m still teaching there today. I was thrilled to find that Palmer has carefully spelled out those same techniques that he teaches in the classroom, plus loads more, in his newest book Now What, Grad? Your Path to Success After College. In the pages of the short, clear, and smartly organized chapters I was pleased to find illustrating stories featuring students I knew in school. I couldn’t recommend this book any stronger as a gift for your self or that soon to be grad in your life

It is the book that you wish you had in hand to give to your son or daughter when they were in college, to the friend who will struggling in a dead end, soul-sucking job, or indeed the book you wish you had with you when you were starting out or changing careers in mid-life or reaching retirement.Based on his own life experience, enriched by his obvious love of his family, and the close mentoring relationships Palmer has had with many students at American University, he provides a book filled with advice that combines the theoretical and philosophical with the nitty-gritty practical aspects of how to navigate entering the job market. The book repeatedly comes back to the theme of spending time on discovering what is important to you in your life -- what are your core beliefs, how do you want to be seen by yourself and others, what defines the "good life" as you understand it. Palmer urges writing a personal mission statement and using it as the organizing tool for making choices in life. (Helpfully, one of the appendices at the end of the book contains a number of actual mission statements, including one by Palmer himself.)This is far more than a simple "How to" book. But it contains many chapters full of practical advice -- don't show up 5 minutes late for an interview; learn how to give a speech or moderate a panel; understand the best ways to use email; prepare yourself for recovering from a poor performance review; make To-Do Lists an engine of success; and so on. These chapters are beautifully organized and specific -- worth the price of the book and more even for those of us who are well along in our careers.Among the most attractive aspects of this book is Palmer's inclusion of material written by his students reporting on their own experiences preparing for, searching for, and working in starting jobs. They candidly reveal their mistakes and the lessons they have learned. But they also illustrate a resilience and good cheer that shows that their work with Professor Palmer has paid off in their lives.I can't recommend this book highly enough. Buy a copy for every college student you know -- it will be a gift that pays off throughout their careers and life.

Did you know how to behave and prosper in a world filled with uncertainty and change? What were your five and ten year goals? In the book Now What, Grad? Chris Palmer doesn’t tell the reader what to do for success in life. Palmer provides tips that evoke thought and vision that enable a recent college graduate, or anyone else, to make his or her own smart decisions. The book is broken into five different sections: life, landing a job, productivity, communication, and networking; all of which are easy to follow and understand. Throughout the book I found myself wanting to get up, and get going with crafting my mission statement and increasing my productivity! In the first section, Palmer walks the reader through developing a personal mission statement, which is the critical framework for future decisions! In section two, Palmer stresses the need to always put your best foot forward when on the job hunt. Palmer shares techniques such as getting organized by leveraging your personal mission statement to develop a plan of attack. Once the job seeker is organized, Palmer explains the importance of tracking progress of the job search to ensure you are making progress and that no stone is left unturned. After the reader established his or her direction, Palmer shares useful tips such as how to prepare for an interview and how to let your dream company know it needs you, immediately! Even as an employed business professional, I found these sections to be useful. The book follows the same theme throughout, providing tips and examples that enable the reader to create their own vision for each of the five sections. I would highly recommend Now What, Grad? to anyone, not only a recent college graduate.
