This book is about an illegal adoption and those that have participated in it. When the family secret was uncovered, the families involved went to extreme lengths to cover it up. That caused me, the victim, to dig deep into the lives of those involved and find out who these people really were. I uncovered many shameful acts and illegal doings on those covering up my illegal adoption. I was extorted from my birth mother so the birth father could avoid child support and John and Shirley Poulson could snatch themselves up a baby after repeated miscarriages and being turned down by normal adoption methods. Now John and Shirley's miracle/accident child thinks she can use her job position to cover this illegal adoption up.

One summer, one secret, one last chance . . .Nicole Chandler was seventeen the summer she fell in love with Jake Evans, the sexy, rough-around-the-edges mechanic who came to work in her father's marine repair shop. At twenty, Jake had seen more of the dark side of life than any kid ever should, yet underneath the hard exterior was a man who protected and cared for what was his.For Jake, Nicole was a sunshine he’d never known—sweetness and innocence, feisty, brave, funny. And definitely sexy. He knew he shouldn't love her, yet she believed in him as no one ever had and made him laugh as though life might turn out okay. When the summer ended, Niki held his heart. Then she broke it.His secrets, her misunderstanding—the mistakes they both made—sent their lives on different paths, their story unfinished. Yet twenty-three years later, they still remember.Nicole, now a successful artist, is starting over. When Jake finds her again, she’s ready to believe in what they once had. Yet after years of being alone, driven by nothing more than success, he may learn to forgive; but he can’t seem to forget. And he’s damn sure never again going to feel the pain of having someone he loves and trusts walk away from him.Young love is fragile, but with histories and exes and families, grown-up love is messy. And while building trust is hard, rebuilding what was once shattered may be impossible.Does first love ever really get a second chance?Full-length, standalone novelJust sayin’ . . . In Texas, the nights are steamy, the food is spicy, and the lovin’ is both. If this isn’t your kind of read, best give this one a pass.

Unfinished: A First Love, Second Chance Romance, by Susan Hammond

About the Author I didn’t start out to write this book. I was halfway through another story and stuck. So I decided to set that story aside and write something short, intending to get back to the first one in just a bit. But what to write? It was summer and thoughts of high school dates at the lake kept coming to mind—including a coconut cream pie fight we won’t speak of.What if? Not my lake and not even close to my own story, but within a week, Nicole and Jake were in my head, insisting their story be told.I love romance in books, movies, and songs. And in real life. Second chance stories are a particular favorite. About two weeks after I started writing Unfinished, we made contact with a friend we’d lost track of and discovered that the year before, he’d married his first love. After fifty years apart! First love did, indeed, get a second chance. It’s time for me to get back to the story that’s been waiting. Logan and Steve, my imaginary friends, are ready to talk.

I just have to take a few moments as my thoughts are ping-ponging on how to describe my state after reading this book. My first reaction was ... Dang, is this actually the last page I turning?I was approached by Ms Hammond's assistant to review this book and truthfully the cover led me to think... A sweet contemporary novel boy, girl and an HEA. Ok no worries it will be light and fun.HELLO!!! FAR FROM IT!! And I know that the words I write here still will not fully express my true experience in reading "Unfinished".It is truly a wonderful must!I began reading and then realized I totally misjudged the complexity and fullness of a fantastic woven, layered story. We are introduced to a sweet sassy h, Nicole and a wrong-side-a-the-tracks H, Jake who fall in love over summer. The story opens letting you know you're 23 years ahead and then we cast back to the beginning when a damaged boy meets the accepting ray of 'Sunshine' who turns his world around and for her this angsty guy is her first love. The build is so well done and the structure keeps your emotions climbing and although they find each other again physically, they have so much healing and letting go to reach each other emotionally. This is one well written book of the lives of two well-rounded, believable characters, right down to the fact that this "sweet contemporary story" was actually a full blown, messy, real-to-actual-life believable, no holes barred, sensual, knock your socks off journey that traversed 23 years of what ifs, horrible childhood experiences, coming of age, and finally healing. I got so caught up in this story that knowing how the characters looked, if the H was sexy and the h had attitude, was so not the priority. The spicy bits were very welcome but they fell so naturally in the story they were part of it rather that the hook to catch the reader, as in some books. The storyline has layers and layers married with the paint style of the h, Nicole, whose work was referenced throughout the flow as milestones in their journey. My thoughts are totally my own, and my only issues are, that the cover does not do the words justice as it seems frivolous compared to the depth inside. The price I must say is a giveaway as I have seen and read books that are much more expensive and are so airy and flat in comparison.Ms Hammond I am so grateful to Joann for contacting me and sharing your fantastic book with me and I am so enamored with it. It is on the top shelf of my library and I am now concreted as a fan of your work.Gifts are so rare and for us readers who appreciate a really good story that is realistic and has so many messages and morals within (and o don't forget a bit of sauce and spice too ) you have hit every check mark with a huge tick mark. Again thank you.

Time Changed for Me as I Read "Unfinished" By rmerriam I'm going to admit to knowing Susan and to have heard her read bits of this novel last Spring in writer's group. I dropped away from the group but was given the opportunity to read the finished work so I did. Now I'm a guy. I don't read romance novels. I'm into SF, suspense, legal, and high tech books. Seriously, I wouldn't consider romance if it were the last book in the world. But I wanted to see what Susan accomplished.I read a few chapters, got distracted with my own technical writing for a few days, and picked it back up late the Saturday when we changed from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time. I kept watching the time on my iPad so I wouldn't read too late - which means 2 am for me. I just kept on reading until I finished the book. It made me want to keep going. Then I looked at a real clock and saw the iPad had changed time on me. It was 3:30 am! Yikes! Duh! The iPad changed time one me!Is this well written? Yes! Is it suspenseful? Yup! Could I put it down? Nope!Susan did a great job of bringing in real life situations that shaped Jake's life. I nodded at least twice as his experiences paralleled my own or others I've known. I could see Nicole in people I know. I also at various times in the book wanted to grab both of them and shake them until they came to their senses. That's how real Susan made them.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully crafted. By lt-stahler A delightful, captivating romp of a story. But what sets this book apart is the quality of the writing. Hammond is a craftsman of the language; the prose is tight, polished, and makes you want to linger over each sentence. A magnificent first novel.

Sometime in the distant past there was a mythical serpent who lived in an incredible manor high up on a mountain. The winged serpent had lived there for a huge number of years, yet nobody had seen him. In the town that was found just beneath the mountain, they spoke much about what it may be similar to in the palace, however nobody set out to visit it. The monster had been in the town a few hundred years prior, however had been scared by a weird commotion. It was a shepherd kid, who had blown his woodwind. The winged serpent had never heard music, and he thought it was frightful.

Hey, Seymour!, by Walter Wick

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Seymour, a little toy figurine featured in the "Can You See What I See?" series returns in this new photographic adventure. Along with Buttons, his little dog companion, he fearlessly launches himself into new adventures—10 in all—from climbing into towering bins of bric-a-brac to flying a spaceship, constructing a junkyard robot, and exploring a lavish tree house. Printed on sturdy cardstock for extra durability, each fantastic spread is meticulously constructed from a dizzying assortment of objects to create colorful, visually engaging scenes that make searching for the hidden objects challenging but not impossible. As the introductory author's note points out, "each scene…includes a fold-out segment" and a rhyme that prompts readers about the hidden objects to hunt for. Open and closed folds provide an additional puzzle in letting viewers compare the two and figure out the differences. Another author's note at the end provides some trivia about the photographs as well as a few "Bonus Puzzles." VERDICT Another winsome hidden object book from Wick, a must for the young connoisseurs of the genre.—Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NY

By Jerald Lazar "Hey, Seymour!" is another enchanting winner from Walter Wick, who gave us the mega-successful "I Spy" and "Can You See What I See?" search-and-find series that have thrilled and delighted kids and their parents for decades. They can now once again revel in elegant photographs and whimsical clues. As with his previous best-sellers, there are also plenty of visual surprises and easter eggs for astute and attentive young eyes. Every colorful spread is a self-contained fanciful adventure, but this volume goes one step further by adding an additional dimension -- every tableau incorporates a fold-out element that provides a kinetic narrative. For example, we see our happy homunculus Seymour tugging on a string connected to the top of a stack of buckets filled with gadgets and gewgaws. Fold out the page and -- oops! -- the colorful contents splatter far and wide ... while the rhyming-couplet instructions point kids to dozens of treasures to find. (Adults are advised to keep bifocals handy -- the pastime is infectious.) Similarly, we see Seymour atop a scrap heap inspecting a hand-drawn "Junk Robot Plan" -- fold out the page and the now-assembled giant robot marches toward us. Some pages fold out sideways, others fold upwards -- like the spectacular multi-tiered fantasy "Tree House" that literally doubles in height. In the miraculous "Balancing Tricks" scenario, dozens of blocks, billiard balls, dominoes and assorted tchotchkes precariously balance on a single lego block -- a stunt that Wick not only accomplished and photographed without camera shenanigans or even adhesives, but then doubled in height (and complexity and difficulty), as you'll discover yourself when you fold the page upward. Trying to reverse engineer Seymour's intricately sophisticated Rube Goldbergesque "Balloon Launcher" (which is ingeniously constructed from everyday kids' toys and actually works!) is worth the price of admission alone. You'll marvel at the meticulous attention to detail in each tableau, and will be charmed by recurring and overlapping elements and themes. This large-format hardcover title benefits from the exquisite photography we've come to expect from Wick, whose books' photographs and hand-constructed sets are joyously exhibited in prestigious art museums across the land. The high-quality coated stock makes the pages durable in youngsters' hands -- appropriate for an enduring classic for the ages. Best of all, like all of Walter Wick's magical books, "Hey, Seymour!" imbues everyday objects with a sense of wonder -- it sparks imaginations and gets kids to exercise their ocular orbs and put on their thinking caps. Big fun! A perfect gift for all the kids in your life, at an insanely affordable price. Stock up now for the holidays! Highly recommended!

But haven't actually gifted it yet so this will only be based on my own reaction after looking through it. It's a beautiful book and I can see how a child of the right age would really enjoy it. There are a ton of interesting things to look at, but reading is required if you want to search for the requested items because the lists of things to look for are words only with no pictures as a hint. Even with an adult helping, it might still be frustrating for younger children. I'm usually great at hidden object games and I had a really hard time with this! But that said, it's really creative and I would definitely recommend it for a child who is old enough to recognize words like "elephant". I think I'll save mine for a year or two.

At first I thought it was an easier version of his typical seek and find books, but was pleased to find it was not. As always it's fun to look for the objects "hidden" within the kaleidoscope of fun gizmos. Fun for kids and adults alike.

Longlisted for the National Book Award The Newbery Honor–winning author of Hatchet and Dogsong shares surprising true stories about his relationship with animals, highlighting their compassion, intellect, intuition, and sense of adventure.Gary Paulsen is an adventurer who competed in two Iditarods, survived the Minnesota wilderness, and climbed the Bighorns. None of this would have been possible without his truest companion: his animals. Sled dogs rescued him in Alaska, a sickened poodle guarded his well-being, and a horse led him across a desert. Through his interactions with dogs, horses, birds, and more, Gary has been struck with the belief that animals know more than we may fathom. His understanding and admiration of animals is well known, and in This Side of Wild, which has taken a lifetime to write, he proves the ways in which they have taught him to be a better person.

This Side of Wild: Mutts, Mares, and Laughing Dinosaurs, by Gary Paulsen

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—A delightful compilation of insightful and entertaining tales of animal wisdom. In his first tale, Paulsen describes how, at age 67, he moved to Alaska, preparing to run the Iditarod again. Despite his wilderness prowess, the author says that he had once more become an "ignorant tourist" and needed someone to watch his back. In a characteristic moment of compassionate weakness, he acquired Corky, a sickly, eight-pound shelter poodle with rotten teeth. The "Corkinator" turned out to have "early-warning radar" and guarded him from predators large and small, using different barks to indicate what creature might be lurking and even looking in rear view mirrors for protection. Paulsen also includes an account of his experience with Gretchen, a dog he met in Texas while he was unhappily stationed in the army. Gretchen drank coffee at the kitchen table, knew a thousand words, and could communicate with head nods. Paulsen returned week after week to have actual soul-saving conversations with her, which gave him solace from his painful military life. In another story, birds and bees take over a rest stop in Arizona, successfully defending their territory against humans. Sketchy pen-and-ink illustrations add to the nostalgic atmosphere. Paulsen is the rare storyteller who offers wit, warmth, information, and sensitivity. However, though the book's gentle cover and the animal-related reminiscences will attract children, there are a few humorously off-color moments and some deeper, more philosophical musings that are more likely to resonate with a more mature audience. VERDICT Older middle graders and younger teens, especially those who love dogs, will come away with a variety of emotions about wildlife—curiosity, respect, and awe—after reading this funny and perceptive work.—Diane McCabe, John Muir Elementary, Santa Monica, CA

Review "An absorbing read for animal lovers of any age." (Publishers Weekly)"Older middle graders and younger teens, especially those who love dogs, will come away with a variety of emotions about wildlife—curiosity, respect, and awe—after reading this funny and perceptive work." (School Library Journal)

About the Author Gary Paulsen is one of the most honored writers of contemporary literature for young people. He has written more than two hundred books for adults and young people, and is the author of three Newbery Honor titles: Dogsong, Hatchet, and The Winter Room. He divides his time between New Mexico, Alaska, and on the Pacific.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Magic of Life By The Invisible Pam I love Gary Paulsen. So I was surprised to find this new book at the library. How had I missed it's debut!?! I plunged into it.~THIS SIDE OF WILD isn't a long book and I read it in a few hours. I think it's a combination of true life and exaggeration. But I could be wrong.I do know that it draws on Gary's diverse life experiences. It touches upon a time when he was in the army, as well as when he was a wee child. He recalls his experiences running the Iditarod and living in the desert. Tying all these episodes together are the animals he has loved and admired. And in fact this book is all about the magic of life and the magic dogs and horses and birds can bring to it.The stories are wonderful in the way that Paulsen's works always are. However I'm going to add some observations that are critical. First, there is a jumpy feeling to the book. In the midst of a story the author will look back in time. It adds depth of understanding where Gary is coming from, but the feel and flow is different from previous books.*The jumps in time actually have a virtuous side in that there are natural stops that can be used by anyone reading the tales aloud. The other thing I'll note, but which really isn't criticism, is that some sensitive younger children might find some of the discussions of death distressing. There is nothing graphic of course, but the book talks about the hundreds of thousands that died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as those who were killed by wild life and accidents. These things are not dwelled upon but I know that some kids don't need them to be emphasized to be distressed by them.WHAT I REALLY THINK::: THIS SIDE OF WILD is a wonderful collection of stories about the wonder of dogs, horses and birds. Gary talks about how its frequently animals that train us, not the other way around. How dogs and horses can show kindness and intellect if you only know to patiently look for it. And how an 8 pound poodle with only 3 teeth can growl down a grizzly. Not perfect but so worth the read.~ from the library

By KidsReads Although a small gray dog named Gretchen belonged to old Mr. Winnike, an extraordinary animal trainer, she changed Newbery Honor-winning author Gary Paulsen’s life. When Paulsen met Gretchen, he was wrung out from his army experiences and life in general. Gretchen seemed to sense his exhaustion, and soon the two drank coffee together and communicated on a regular basis. Though they parted sooner than Paulsen wanted, he never forgot that fabulous little dog and all he learned from her.THIS SIDE OF WILD is the author’s tribute to the many animals, like Gretchen, that have helped make differences by giving him their unconditional love. Animals like Corky, the little three-legged Border Collie who saved him from a bear; like Faulkner, the old lap dog who predicted Paulsen’s future; and like Betty, the horse who saved a wild rabbit from coyotes.Written in Paulsen’s easy, clean style, every chapter brings insight into the life full of magic that he’s shared with animals. Like all of Paulsen’s books, which continue to thrill young readers and have appeared on reading lists for both middle and high school students, THIS SIDE OF WILD is written from the heart.Reviewed by Sally Tibbetts

Relatable Animal Anecdotes By Trudy When author, Gary Paulsen, rescues an elderly poodle named Corky from animal shelter, he discovers a spunk and lack of fear that makes the dog an amazing guard dog who returns the favor of saving a life. Gretchen, a dog who drinks from a mug, convinces the author that animals have an understanding and way of communicating that goes beyond what our minds can fathom. Who knew a mare would actually have the capability of protecting a jackrabbit from coyotes or that a bird could not only mimic a president but maybe even feel lonely? Some fascinating insights into the relationships animals have with humans.Overall, the book felt like a compilation of notes about animals that didn't quite make it into Paulsen's adventure novels. While not Paulsen's best work, the reluctant reader may love the different anecdotes on animals relation to man. With each chapter being a different experience, the older middle grade reader can merely enjoy the short stories rather than think through a plot.Disclosure: I received an ARC copy of the book to facilitate review.

Join Lenore Wade in the small town of Cheboksary, Russia as she teaches English. Originally sent to Cheboksary by the Peace Corps, Lenore continued on a volunteer basis when the Peace Corps was no longer present. Lenore’s enjoyment of her time in Russia glows in every sentence. She shows us real people from different cultures interacting and breaking the façade of not getting along. Russian ways, clothes, philosophy, and even a pet mouse, each have a place in her short vignettes. The people include The Boss From Hell, with which we can all identify, to the Little Pain in the Ass. They all come together in a wonderful mix of history and culture, well-blended with Lenore’s humor and love of Russia.

Lenore Wade relates with humor and knowledge her personal expierences in Russia during and after her assignment there in the Peace Corps. It is obvious she was able to form meaningful friendships while teaching English. I appreciated her insights into everyday life. A quick fun read!

Welcome to Thistle Bend! Perfect for fans of Susan Mallery, this charming series debut introduces a small town where old secrets are revealed—and wounded hearts are opened to new love.   A year after being laid off from the Smithsonian, Lindsey Simms says yes to a job offer as curator of a heritage museum in Thistle Bend, Colorado (population 1,519). It could be worse—and it is. Because the new museum has escalated a dispute between the Karlssons, Lindsey’s relatives, and the Crenshaws, a blood feud which goes way back to a land deal that changed the fortunes of both families. Trying to stay objective, Lindsey can’t tell anyone about her conflict of interest—especially not the ruggedly handsome handyman fixing up her cabin, who seems to be keeping secrets of his own.   Although he’s the executive director of the family trust and one of Colorado’s most eligible bachelors, Carden Crenshaw prefers getting his hands dirty in town and on his sprawling ranch. Staying busy has given him an excuse not to risk heartbreak, but getting to know the beautiful “museum lady” makes him reconsider. Little does he know, the heat between them will only add fuel to the fire—unless this unlikely couple can prove they’re lovers, not fighters.Praise for Should’ve Said No   “A wonderful story of family, honor, trust, and generations of unexpected secrets . . . Cruz am new to Tracy March’s books and have become a quick fan. This story takes us to Thistle Bend, CO with a population of only 1519. Typical of small towns, there are friendship as well as feuds. Usually within the founding families.Lindsey was laid off her job at the Smithsonian Museum in DC and after a year of unemployment, got a job in this small town, thanks to her great-aunt’s influence. She is to gather information about the town, so that they can open a museum about Thistle Bend and it’s ancestors etc.Little did Lindsey know, that there were secrets to be kept that not only make her uncomfortable, but could easily jeopardize her new friendship and attraction to Carden Crenshaw. He is one on in charge of the Crenshaw Trust. When she met him upon her arrival to town, she thought he was a handyman in grubbies and certainly didn’t look like the handsome ,clean shaven man she met the next day. His family and her relatives have been in a feud for years. Once Lindsey goes through all the files that are suppose to help her in the creation of the new historical museum in town, both families hope to get answers benefiting them as well as vindicate them.Lots of secrets, old hurts and experiences, will have you thoroughly enjoying this book.

When the opportunity presented itself to start a museum from the wood floors and up, she couldn’t pass it by. Well, she also desperately needed a job too! When her aunt and uncle told her about it, she was thrilled to know that she could contribute but there was just one thing, she couldn’t acknowledge that they were related. When she arrived in Thistle Bend, Colorado, she loved the quaint community and the fabulous landscape. What she didn’t know what that she was getting into the middle of a long time feud between her distant relatives and the wealthy land owners in the area. She met the grandson of those wealthy owners, Carden Crenshaw, before knowing who he was. And the sparks definitely were flying. That was just the beginning of the challenge to make sure history didn’t rewrite itself in more ways than one.The story definitely twists and turns in unexpected directions. But Lindsey eventually puts together the facts and displays them at the opening of the museum, hoping that they will be accepted and that she and Carden can be together forever.

By Books Laid Bare & Books Laid Bare Boys 4.5 out of 5Get your happy on with this remarkable contemporary romance. This is the sort of book that I just love to snuggle up with and devour. It gives me romance without the high drama but makes me work for it. It draws the outline beautifully and with it’s stunning descriptions I am able to colour in the pictures in my mind.I adored this book.I loved the whole family angst situation going on between the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s and I love the fact that the main characters are embroiled in the whole scenario. Both Carden and Lindsey are very easy to fall in love with. They have an easy charm that just wrapped its arms around me and kept me comfortable. They weren’t perfect but that is what made them perfect to read about, they weren’t just characters…they had character and that was completely engaging.I loved the storyline, the pace of the story and the eclectic cast of secondary characters, I am a shoe in for the rest of the series – can’t wait!
