Graduate School and Beyond: Earning and Using Your Advanced Degree, by Mark H. Rossman

Review Mark Rossman has been a rigorous guide and friend to generations of students. His biases come through loud and clear the most successful students own their education. They seek to shape their educational experiences to their own unique needs, rather than passively accept whatever is thrown their way. This guide to graduate study is both practical and very thorough. It will take the mystery out of the process. Mark shares with his readers the importance of parsing the tasks, breaking them down into component parts, each to be dealt with in its own time. You don't have to read it cover to cover just the well-labeled ideas that apply to you. My favorite: Becoming a Self-Directed Learner. --Dwight Allen, Eminent Scholar of Educational Reform, Emeritus, Old Dominion University and former Dean of the School of Education, University of Massachusetts, AmherstKnowledge is power. In this book, Dr. Rossman fully discusses and explains all aspects of the graduate school process, including the program of study, finances, delivery systems online and on campus the committee process, comps, the proposal and how it is connected to the thesis/dissertation. With this clear and succinct information, the graduate student is in a much better position to develop an advanced degree program that will fully and adequately meet personal and professional goals and objectives. --Craig Swenson, Chancellor, Argosy University SystemAmong the uncertainties of life that young people face these days, perhaps none is so complex or so crucial as the decision to earn a graduate degree. Aside from the increase in earning power that an advanced degree affords, prospective graduate students must confront a daunting array of tasks and obstacles to success. Issues of which program to choose and how to pay for it are coupled with questions about how graduate school works and how to be successful once the decision to begin has been made. Not surprisingly, prospective graduate students both need and want a clear and comprehensive guide to graduate school and in Mark Rossman's book, they have it. Built upon his forty-plus years of experience as faculty, administrator, and graduate student advisor, Dr. Rossman's new book amplifies and extends his earlier work, the nationally recognized and applauded Negotiating Graduate School, and brings to graduate students a compelling and re-assuring vision of the path to their degree. As a long-time colleague at two universities and as former president of an innovative online graduate institution, I am proud to endorse Graduate School and Beyond and to recommend it to every prospective graduate student. --J. Bruce Francis, Distinguished Senior Faculty, Capella University

About the Author Mark H. Rossman is Professor Emeritus at Capella University where he has also served as Senior Faculty, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Vice President for Residencies. He has chaired more than 180 Doctoral dissertations and master s theses and served on more than 400 graduate committees.

And the advice for more traditional schooling was focused on setting realistic goals and balancing workload - all of the generic stuff you can find online. I was looking for something about how to find conferences to present at and attach yourself to research projects, get published, etc. Only but this if you really feel like you're starting with no idea of what you want from grad school or how to go about getting it.

Democracy and Social Ethics, by Jane Addams

About the Author In 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr co-founded Hull House in Chicago, Illinois, the first settlement house in the United States. The house was named after Charles Hull, who built the building in 1856. When starting out, all of the funding for the Hull House came from the $50,000 estate she inherited after her father died. Later, the Hull House was sponsored by Helen Culver, the wealthy real estate agent who had initially leased the house to the women. Jane and Ellen were the first two occupants of the house, which would later be the residence of about 25 women. At its height, Hull House was visited each week by around 2000 people. Its facilities included a night school for adults, kindergarten classes, clubs for older children, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gymnasium, a girls club, bathhouse, a book bindery, a music school, a drama group, a library, and labor-related divisions. Her adult night school was a forerunner of the continuing education classes offered by many universities today. In addition to making available services and cultural opportunities for the largely immigrant population of the neighborhood, Hull House afforded an opportunity for young social workers to acquire training. Eventually, the Hull House became a 13-building settlement, which included a playground and a summer camp

Cohen Hull House founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams spent twenty years working with the poverty-stricken immigrant poor in Chicago. She writes here with understated passion and unqualified empathy for their plight.Anyone who wants to know why we have a fourty hour work should read this book. Addams writes about the desirablity of factory work over household work for young women, due both to the lack of isolation and the relatively short working hours, "only" from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., six days a week.Anyone who wants to know why we minimum wage laws, social security disability laws, age discrimination laws, social security laws, welfare laws, etc. should read this book. Addams writes about people earning pennies an hour, having their peak earning years in their twenties, being disabled in their thirties, and being dependent on children for financial support. The children, in turn had their education stop before high school so they can support their families.Anyone who wants to know why governments spend so much money on education should read this book. Addams writes about children having a choose limited to factory employment or household service, with the more intellectually oriented being doomed to spend a lifetime haunting public libraries and public lectures, but having virtually no chance of escaping the circumstance of their birth.Anyone who wants to know why poverty-stricken people are suspicious of political reform movements should read this book. Addams writes about the major efforts Chicago's political powerhouses made to help individual poverty-stricken people, and the irrelevance of wisdom advocating personal savings to people who could not pay for food for their family, or of wisdom urging them to stay out of taverns when they were a great source of personal help and friendship. One hundred and five years after Addams wrote this book, the United States is a far better place to live than it was then. But our country's improvements, urged by great progressive leaders like Addams, are under relentless right-wing assaults today. This book is extremely relevant to our country's future, if our future is going to continue to better than our past. The introduction of Charlene Haddock Seigfried, the past president of the Society for the Advancement of American philosophy, adds a great deal to this work, as it places Addams and her fellow reformers into the context of both their times and the prevailing systems of thought.Addams saw democracy as a way of life, and not just a series of electoral choices. She sought a major expansion of municipal services, to both improve the living standards of the desperately poor and to wean them away from dependence on corrupt political machines. She advocated the existence of "A reformer who really knew the people and their great human needs, who believed it was the business of government to serve them, and who further recognized the educative power of a sense of responsibility...."Addams addresses this book to the philanthropic community which provided the base of her financial support. She clearly saw them as providing seed money for demonstration projects to create greater governmental and societal commitment. It is fashionable in some quarters to say that nothing has been done and nothing can be done to improve the plight of the poverty-stricken. Anyone who believes that, or must deal with others who believe that, should read and quote liberally from this book.

Like fellow Pragmatists John Dewey, William James and George Herbert Mead, she maintained that democracy emerges from the People rather than being bestowed on Americans from government (whether benevolent or otherwise). As the founder of Chicago's Hull House, one of the most famous settlements in the US, she met people everyday that had diverse experiences and hopes for their lives. She tells their stories straightforwardly and in a way that allows the reader to clearly see how misinterpretation occurs with and between people. Addams advocates for doing good "with" people as opposed to doing good "for" people, for taking ethical action to ensure that all Americans have a voice in our ongoing democratic conversation.

By bln If you think of Jane Addams in terms of settlement houses and ending World War I (or trying to), settle down with this slender book to read her thoughts on "social ethics" and practical considerations that affect us today even in different situations than Addams was confronting. Excellent information and thought-provoking. Highly recommended for students of peace and justice studies and members of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom - Addams' ideas about social and economic status differences are eye-opening!

By John Fahey In today's competitive and social media filled world it is essential for a young person to set goals, priorities, and objectives. This practical book is filled with advice on what to do and what not to do. It's clearly a road map, a compendium, a manual that can guide young people from different cultural and language backgrounds. The author draws from personal experiences and that enhances the book. I particularly liked the concepts of time management, organisation, having a focus on activities that have a future benefit, recognizing that some activities are just fillers of time, providing little benefit. The concept of solitude for thought is introduced, how dreams can bring creative ideas, how sleep and punctuality, reading ahead for a lecture, can all bring order to studying. I liked the concept of learning knowledge as oceans, seas, rivers and tributaries. I advise the student reading this book to view it as a resource to return to frequently, to compare what he/she is actually doing to what the book advises should be done. It is a manual for success. It is a guide for students who want to go that extra mile.

Its aimed at kids, however there's plenty of factual information to keep adults interested. It does a good job of laying out the challenges that must be overcome to colonize mars. Explores advantages of going to mars moons.Despite the simple, kid pitched approach its a decent primer on going to mars.

For the budding astronaut By Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet is co-authored by famous astronaut, Buzz Aldrin who is a strong advocate for space exploration, and Marianne Dyson, who is an award-winning author and former NASA flight controller. In short… these are the experts and they make a very compelling case for the possibility of living on Mars in the future. This book will stretch the imagination of young minds – the future thinkers and explorers. The book begins with a description of the tools for space exploration (i.e., space crafts, space rovers, and more) followed by a discussion of the history of Martian exploration and a presentation of what we already know about the “Red Planet”. The book even contains a topographical map of Mars – it’s just incredible! The second half of the book is dedicated to using our imagination to think about what living on Mars would look like and some of the issues we would need to address for it to be habitable. For example, there is no breathable air, it is extremely cold, there is no free-running water, no vegetation, no rain, and far less gravity than Earth (does this mean I would be “lighter”?) There are a series of crisp photographs, groovy illustrations, and even some dioramas depicting things such as high-tech space suits, the dusty rust-colored Martian landscape, and tripped-out bio-domes containing all that is needed to live comfortably. The cynic in me is converting to the idea that it may indeed be possible to live on Mars!My Bottom Line: Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet features an eye-catching collection of photographs and illustrations and is full of the latest science-based information about Mars, space travel, and more. As with other children from generations passed, who gazed up in wonder toward the night sky, this book tests the limits of the reader’s imagination by challenging them to envision life on the Red Planet. I highly recommend this great book and I think it is the perfect choice for any space enthusiast aged 8 years and older.* This book was provided to us by the publisher free-of-charge in exchange for our honest reviews. Uncanny Avengers Vol. 1: Counter-Evolutionary, by Rick Remender

From Booklist When the dust cleared from Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men (2012) event, the best thing left standing was this dandy new title, which combines members of both teams to stand against bigotry and hatred. And there’s plenty of that, when Nazi anachronism the Red Skull comes calling, armed with telepathic powers harvested from the brain of the deceased Charles Xavier. Remender, currently giving Captain America an injection of sf energy, serves up a feast: dense, intelligent writing that asks significant questions; a battle not only of arms but of ideologies; and a cast of characters that gives movie stars like Captain America, Thor, and Wolverine their due without ignoring the rich personalities of lesser-known players. He couldn’t have better support than Cassaday’s art, the most purely gorgeous in contemporary superhero comics, so clean and clear the pages practically glow with life. Cassaday inserts action expertly to give the story maximum drama and, in between, has such mastery of body language and expression that the characters are as compelling as those on a movie screen. --Jesse Karp

Avengers/X-men unity squad By Ian In the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-men, Captain America has decided it's time to take a more active role in human/mutant relations. His idea is to form a team of Avengers and X-men that will work to realize Charles Xavier's dream. The team consists of Captain America, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Rogue and Havok as the team leader. Standing in their way is The Red Skull and his S-men. Rick Remender does a fantastic job here of making the Red Skull a truly evil and despicable villain. I won't reveal what he does, but it's pretty horrific. The Skull is now poised to be one of the best villains in the Marvel Universe. Another great thing this series does is add Scarlet Witch back into the fold. There is a lot of tension here between her and Rogue, which is understandable since the Scarlet Witch caused many problems for the mutant population by almost making them extinct. Rick Remender does a superb job here, and I'm excited to hear that he will be continuing some of the plot threads he introduced in Uncanny X-Force (which was fantastic) here in this title. On art duties, we have stellar work from John Cassady on issues 1-4, and Olivier Coipel on issue 5. I highly recommend giving this series a try if you want the best of both worlds (Avengers and X-men). The storytelling is enough to make this one of the best new titles to come out of the Marvel Now! initiative

Nelson I followed author Rick Remender over from his excellent work on the Uncanny X-Force, he puts the heroes in compelling situations and makes decades of absurd comic continuity fascinating. The Uncanny Avengers Vol 1 is the kick off in a newly crafted super hero team that features both Avengers and X-Men. After events in the Avengers vs X-men story arc Captain America feels guilty that he and his allies did not do enough to fight against anti mutant sentiment. To rectify that he wanted to show Avengers working alongside mutants.Team members include: Wolverine, Havok, Rogue, Captain America, Thor, and Scarlet Witch. The book follows the heroes as they form the team and have a run in with the Red Skull. The primary purpose of these stories is to show the teams growing pains and set up a future significant storyline.I am excited to follow this series.

Wells Collecting: Uncanny Avengers (2015) #1-5Counter Evolutionary collects the entire run of the second Uncanny Avengers series. This book picks up in the aftermath of Avengers & X-Men: Axis . After the stunning revelation that Magneto is not their father, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch travel to the High Evolutionary's planet to confront him about their origin. Rogue attempts to piece together a new Unity Squad with Vision, Dr Voodoo, Falcon, and a newly good guy Sabretooth to back them up. Voodoo's spell goes awry, and the Avengers are scattered across High Evolutionary's world.Writer Rick Remender has earned a his reputation as a masterful storyteller. The pacing and plot work well as Remender weaves the scatter team's individual plot lines together to meet for a grand finale. The High Evolutionary makes a maniacal enemy for our heroes, and Remender uses the High Evolutionary's particular brand of crazy to sound some rather profound thoughts on the nature of perfection and the virtues of flaws. Finally, Sabretooth as a living, thinking character (rather than simply Wolverine's nemesis) has a lot of potential to develop Sabreooth into a sympathetic character. I am enjoying watching his transition from supervillain to superhero.Readers who've followed the Uncanny Avengers will want to pick this volume up because it details critical changes in Wonder Man and Rogue's situation. Longtime Avengers fans will also enjoy the moments that The Vision and Wanda share. The conclusion of this volume points readers towards Secret Wars in order to follow these characters' adventures.

By ~Amy I love any excuse to to dive into a Gemma Brocato story, and being given an arc feels like Christmas! Playing with Fire took me back to Granite Pointe, a place I'm happy to revisit frequently. Once again, Gemma enthralled me with a tale of love, dramas, emotions galore! I loved the new characters, & the glances of old characters. I was tickled that Sam was included, he stole my heart - at first glance, in Cooking Up Love, the first book that introduces us to Granite Pointe. And Pippa & those twins are always a good addition. But, I loved Kit, Sarah was a delight, & Cris inched his way into a spot in my heart amongst my favorite book characters. Gemma never ceases to draw me in with suspense, give me something to think about with a bit of drama, and reach into my soul with all the emotions & the way she seems to always get you to feel what the characters are feeling. Playing With Fire was just what I'd expect from Gemma: a heartfelt romance filled with love, laughter, sprinkled with tears & a splash of anger, that seems to know how to reach into the very core of your being and make you fall in love.

Gemma Bocato introduces another intriguing couple to populate her “Five Senses” world. Assistant Principal, Sarah, has a rule about not getting involved with the parent of a student, especially after her last relationship ended badly. But then Crispin Bayfield shows up at her school for a parent-teacher conference after his son “Trip” lands in trouble. Not only is Cris the town’s new super-sexy fire Marshal, but he’s an attentive father to his teenage son—even if Trip has some issues to overcome. As Sarah finds herself immersed more and more in those issues, she also finds herself spending more time with Cris, and second-guessing her dating rules.Playing with Fire is an engaging story rife with romance, sensual heat, and old-fashioned feel-good moments that will touch your heart and leave you with a warm glow long after the story ends. Ms. Brocato delivers another fabulous read and charming addition to a fantastic series!

I particularly enjoyed a fireman story that didn’t center on the woman’s fear of his dying. Not that that’s a bad thing, just nice to have a change now and then. Highly recommend.

A volume in Contemporary Perspectives on Access, Equity and Achievement Series Editor: Chance W. Lewis, University of North Carolina at Charlotte Since the U.S. Civil Rights era, the racial composition of higher education has changed dramatically, resulting in an increase in the number of African American students and African American faculty in predominantly white institutions (PWI). Nevertheless, the number of African American endowed or distinguished professors remains small. Because it is difficult for African American faculty to attain these prized positions, those who have done so possess invaluable knowledge that may be beneficial to others. Reaching the Mountaintop of the Academy: Personal Narratives, Advice and Strategies from Black Distinguished and Endowed Professors, fills an important niche in the canon of higher education literature. In the autobiographical chapters that follow, numerous distinguished and endowed professors (1) describe their personal journey to the distinguished or endowed professorship; (2) explain important life lessons that they learned during their journey; (3) describe their current professional goals; and (4) offer suggestions and recommendations for graduate students, untenured faculty, tenured faculty, and college/university administrators. At a time when many predominantly white higher education institutions continue to have difficulty attracting and retaining African American faculty, and African American faculty continue to struggle for full inclusion in the academy, this book is timely and needed.

By Rufla This powerful approach to understanding the unique and powerful work that these professors of color do on a day to day is overwhelmingly refreshing. Even though they face unique challenges, their stories will inform those who come after them in Academe. I welcome more from these powerful educators and leaders.
